Premier League confirms only one Boxing Day game amid scheduling issues
  • Manchester United host Newcastle United in the lone game, for the fewest top-flight fixtures in 43 years on Boxing Day
  • The adjustments have left the Premier League operating as a 33-weekend competition

MANCHESTER: The Premier League has announced that this season will feature just one match on Boxing Day, breaking from the tradition of a full slate of festive fixtures that fans have long enjoyed.
Manchester United host Newcastle United in the lone game, for the fewest top-flight fixtures in 43 years on Boxing Day, which falls on a Friday this year.
In a statement, the League cited mounting scheduling pressures linked to the expansion of European club competitions as the key reason for the change.
“There are now several challenges to Premier League fixture scheduling rooted in the expansion of European club competitions – which led to a revision of our domestic calendar ahead of last season, including changes to the FA Cup,†the League said.
The adjustments have left the Premier League operating as a 33-weekend competition, which is fewer than in previous years, despite maintaining its 380-match format since 1995.
The League broadcasting deals mean matches must be scheduled on those weekends each season. With only five rounds of midweek games included, matches must be played on December 27-28.
“With fewer weekends available, fixture planning has become increasingly constrained,†the League said. “With fewer weekends to work with, the League is bound by how the calendar falls.â€
The League promised a return to a fuller Boxing Day schedule next season when the date falls on a Saturday.
Boxing Day football has been a cornerstone of the English game for decades, offering supporters a festive tradition of packed stadiums and high-profile clashes.
This year’s reduced offering underscores the growing impact of congested calendars as domestic and European competitions vie for space.

Turkish football suspends 149 referees accused of betting
The TFF said in a statement that its disciplinary committee had handed out suspensions ranging from eight to 12 months
Ten of the referees listed by the TFF placed more than 10,000 bets

ISTANBUL: The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) on Friday suspended 149 referees accused of betting on matches.
The TFF said in a statement that its disciplinary committee had handed out suspensions ranging from eight to 12 months, adding that investigations are continuing into three other referees.
An investigation by the federation into 571 referees in the Turkish professional leagues revealed on Monday that 371 of them had sports betting accounts and 152 were actively betting.
“Refereeing is a profession of honor,†said TFF president Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu on Thursday.â€
“Anyone who tarnishes that honor...will never again be involved in Turkish football,“
The TFF said on Monday that 22 of the officials (seven match referees and 15 assistants) work in the top league.
Ten of the referees listed by the TFF placed more than 10,000 bets, with one of them alone placing 18,227 bets. Forty-two referees each bet on more than 1,000 football matches, the head of Turkish football said on Friday.
However, he did not specify whether any of them were suspected of betting on matches they had officiated.
An investigation has also been launched by the Istanbul public prosecutor’s office.

New Juve manager Spalletti eyes Scudetto
  • “Of course, I hope this team can still get involved in the title race,†he said
  • “Only nine matches have been played; there are still 29 left to play. That’s a lot of matchesâ€

ROME: New Juventus manager Luciano Spalletti said on Friday that his seventh-placed team are capable of challenging for the Sere A title.
“Of course, I hope this team can still get involved in the title race,†he said Friday, on the eve of Juve’s game at Cremonese.
Spalletti, who succeeds the sacked Igor Tudor, added: “As we discussed with the players on Thursday, we must aim for the highest.
“And the highest is the Scudetto.
“Only nine matches have been played; there are still 29 left to play. That’s a lot of matches, and I’ve seen many things during my 30-plus years of career.â€
Juventus have given Spalletti until the end of the season in the hope that the 66-year-old can secure qualification for next season’s Champions League. His contract runs until June 30.
Should he achieve that Spalletti will be given more time to help put Juve back at the top in Italy after being overtaken by Inter Milan and Napoli in recent seasons.
Spalletti was the man behind Napoli’s historic Serie A title in 2023 and has been one of the country’s most influential coaches over the past two decades, also performing above expectations at Roma and Inter Milan.
He added at his unveiling: “If I didn’t believe in this team, in its potential despite the difficult moments, why would I have agreed to sign an eight-month contract?
“I believe we can do good work, which requires availability, willpower, and self-discipline.â€
Five months after his dismissal as Italy coach Spalletti is relishing being back in the Serie A limelight.
“In a club like this, ambitions are obviously high. We must compete in the Champions League.â€
He had kind words for the man he placed, Tudor, who was sacked on Monday.
“I’m sure I will be taking over a team that is mentally strong and well-trained,†he said.

Liverpool must snap losing ‘habit’, says under-fire Slot
  • Liverpool manager Arne Slot said his side must not make a habit of losing games they should win after six defeats in their last seven games plunged the Premier League champions into crisis

LIVERPOOL:Liverpool manager Arne Slot said his side must not make a habit of losing games they should win after six defeats in their last seven games plunged the Premier League champions into crisis.
The Reds have lost their last four league games ahead of Aston Villa’s trip to Anfield on Saturday and also crashed out of the League Cup to Crystal Palace in midweek.
Slot’s decision to name an inexperienced side for the 3-0 defeat to the Eagles drew criticism, but he again defended the need to give his key players a rest after a series of injury problems in the early part of the season.
Alisson Becker, Alexander Isak and Jeremie Frimpong are all still sidelined, while Ryan Gravenberch is only just back in training after an ankle injury.
Slot had an eye not only on the visit of in-form Villa, but Real Madrid’s trip to Anfield in the Champions League on Tuesday and Liverpool’s clash with Manchester City next Sunday.
“It is nothing to do with the squad depth, it is how we’ve gone throughout the season in terms of injuries and availability,†said Slot at his pre-match press conference on Friday.
“It’s just the situation as it is. We have still more than enough good players available to play the game on Saturday, to play the game on Tuesday, and to play the game on Sunday, but I have to take care of a few of them, and that’s why I made the decision not to play.â€
Five games into the Premier League campaign, Villa trailed Liverpool by 12 points.
But the two meet this weekend separated only by goal difference as Unai Emery’s men have hit form just as Liverpool’s losing streak began.
Slot cited Villa as an example to his side of how quickly things can change and the overall strength of the Premier League.
Arsenal enjoy a four-point lead at the top of the table, but only three points separate second-placed Bournemouth from Villa in eighth.
“Apart from Arsenal, I think many teams are in and around the same points, so again it tells you also how hard the the Premier League is,†added Slot.
“Normally, although with us the run is already quite long, you don’t every time lose a game of football where you create more chances than the other team.
“They (Villa) decided not to make a habit out of that, and let’s hope we decide not to make a habit out of having more chances than the opponent but not winning it.â€

  • The Asian “swing†on the WTA Tour has been particularly hard hit by injuries and pullouts in recent weeks
  • Tokyo Olympic champion became the latest in a long line of players to suffer a late-season injury

HONG KONG: Top seed Belinda Bencic pulled out of the Hong Kong Open quarter-finals on Friday as the Tokyo Olympic champion became the latest in a long line of players to suffer a late-season injury.
The Asian “swing†on the WTA Tour has been particularly hard hit by injuries and pullouts in recent weeks, placing renewed scrutiny on the demanding tennis schedule.
Bencic, who was ranked 421 in the world at the start of the season but has climbed to 11, was supposed to meet Spain’s Cristina Bucsa in the last eight in Hong Kong.
“So disappointed to have to withdraw today from my quarter-final match here in Hong Kong due to my thigh injury,†said the 28-year-old Swiss, who won gold at the Covid-delayed Olympics in 2021.
“I’ve played a lot of tennis in the past few weeks and did everything I could to stay healthy, but it was not to be.â€
Bencic beat Linda Noskova last weekend to win the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo and cap a remarkable comeback, a year after returning to tennis from having a baby.
Noskova reached the final in the Japanese capital after Elena Rybakina withdrew injured ahead of their semifinal.
The tournament in Hong Kong was hit even before it began with the withdrawals of former world number one Naomi Osaka and the 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu.
Both ended their seasons early through injury.
Daria Kasatkina, who has won eight WTA titles, was also initially scheduled to compete in Hong Kong but she too brought the curtain down prematurely on her season.
“The schedule is too much, mentally and emotionally I am at breaking point and sadly I am not alone,†the 28-year-old, who this year switched nationality from Russia to Australia, said in early October.

Bayern relishing another chance to show their might against Leverkusen in Bundesliga
  • Bayern warmed up by beating Cologne 4-1 in the German Cup
  • There’s a clash between second and third on Saturday when Leipzig host Stuttgart

BERLIN: Indomitable this season, Bayern Munich have another chance to demonstrate their superiority when Bayer Leverkusen visit in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
Leverkusen ended Bayern’s record 11-year run as champion in 2024, but the Bavarian powerhouse wrested the title back last season and Leverkusen have undergone a summer transformation after losing key players.
While Bayern look even stronger in Vincent Kompany’s second season in charge — 14 wins across all games including the German Supercup so far — Leverkusen are already on to their second coach after making a botched start under Erik ten Hag.
Kasper Hjulmand has steadied the team, which have won their last four Bundesliga games but were humbled 7-2 at home by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.
Another Bundesliga challenge is not expected from Leverkusen this season.
Key matchups
Bayern warmed up by beating Cologne 4-1 in the German Cup, where Leverkusen were taken to extra time by 10-man second-division side Paderborn before eventually prevailing 4-2.
There’s a clash between second and third on Saturday when Leipzig host Stuttgart. Germany forward Deniz Undav is back for Stuttgart.
Augsburg coach Sandro Wagner must fear for his job before Borussia Dortmund’s visit on Friday after his team’s German Cup exit to second-division Bochum just days after a 6-0 hiding at home to Leipzig. Wagner’s team have lost five of their eight league games.
Wolfsburg coach Paul Simonis is also in trouble before Hoffenheim’s visit on Sunday after his team’s cup exit to second-division Holstein Kiel. Wolfsburg have lost five of their last six games.
Also on Sunday, Cologne host Hamburger SV in a duel between promoted teams.
Players to watch
Harry Kane remains central to Bayern’s brilliant start and took his goal tally to 22 against Cologne on Wednesday. The England forward has failed to score in only two games this season.
Nadiem Amiri was desolate after Mainz’s cup loss to Stuttgart on Wednesday. Mainz will need the Germany playmaker at his best against Werder Bremen on Saturday to stop their run of four straight league defeats.
The 16-year-old Wael Mohya made his debut for Borussia Mönchengladbach in the cup on Tuesday to become the club’s youngest player. He left to ovations from the fans, who’ll hope to see him again on Saturday at St. Pauli.
Off the field
There are fears of trouble in Berlin on Saturday when Union Berlin and Hertha Berlin play home games around the same time. Usually the German soccer league makes sure the city rivals alternate home games, making security arrangements necessary for only one at a time. But a league official said a holiday in the west German state of North Rhine-Westphalia meant no games can be played there on Friday with knock-on effects for other teams.
Hertha host Dynamo Dresden for what would already be considered a high-risk game in the second division, then Union host Freiburg a couple of hours later in the Bundesliga. Fans from all four clubs will be in the German capital at the same time, with up to 35,000 expected from Dresden.
