  • `Birth of a baby is a cause for celebration, sharing food, and bringing families and friends together ` 聽 聽

RIYADH: In 海角直播, the tradition of 鈥渟abi鈥 鈥 a seventh-day celebration marking the arrival of a newborn 鈥 continues to thrive, striking a balance between cultural heritage and religious practice, and the modern event industry.

The sabi is similar to a baby shower, but it takes place seven days after the baby is born as families traditionally wait until the birth to celebrate.

Long regarded as more than just a family gathering, the sabi is a social and spiritual milestone. The custom involves prayers for the child鈥檚 health, sharing food with relatives and neighbors, and introducing the baby to the wider community.

The ritual is also closely tied to the Islamic practice of 鈥渁qiqah,鈥 a strongly recommended Sunnah in which two sheep are sacrificed for a boy and one for a girl. The meat is then distributed among relatives, friends, and those in need.

鈥淎qiqah is a way of showing gratitude to God for the blessing of a child,鈥 said Reda Omdah, a father from Jeddah. 鈥淚t is a tradition that strengthens family bonds while helping the community.鈥

Wedding shops now offer Hijazi-style 鈥渮afa鈥 entrances for newborns, while specialty stores such as Bamo Baby sell clothing, accessories, and themed gifts for infants and mothers. (SPA)

Alongside the sacrifice, parents often include the symbolic act of shaving the infant鈥檚 hair on the seventh day. The practice is seen as a gesture of purity and blessing, with some families keeping the hair as a memento.

For some Saudis, the sabi carries deep personal memories. Omda, from Jeddah, recalled the scale of his own celebration.

鈥淢y family still tells me stories about the sabi they held for me and my twin brother. Because we were both boys, they sacrificed four sheep. My mother described how the whole neighborhood gathered and food was shared with everyone,鈥 he told Arab News.

When it was time to celebrate his own children, Omda kept the tradition alive but adapted it to today鈥檚 pace of life. 鈥淚 made sure to perform the aqiqah, but now it鈥檚 the age of technology 鈥 the songs came from a laptop instead of a live band. I know some families still hire traditional groups, but I wanted ours to be simple. For me, the most important part is the sacrifice and sharing the food.鈥

For many families, the sabi is also about togetherness. Hanin Saif, a mother of two, described how the event creates lasting memories.

鈥淲e invite children to hold candles and sing songs while circling the baby鈥檚 crib. It鈥檚 a custom passed down from my grandparents. There鈥檚 always the sacrificial meal, and mothers give gifts to the baby 鈥 often gold for the mother, or jewelry if the baby is a girl,鈥 she said.

Saif said that she prefers hosting the celebration to gather everyone at once. 鈥淚 like doing it so the visits don鈥檛 become scattered. We have the dinner, the children gather around the crib, and we sing traditional songs like 鈥楤less our child.鈥 It鈥檚 simple but meaningful.鈥

Despite changes in scale and style, the essence of the sabi and aqiqah remains the same: a chance to strengthen family ties, express gratitude to God, and celebrate life鈥檚 blessings. (SPA)

For Saudi media personality Razan Tareq, however, preserving the authenticity of the celebration was key. She told Arab News: 鈥淪ince the sabi is something handed down from our grandmothers, I wanted to do it in the same way. I paid attention to every detail and made sure it appeared on social media to show the cultural side 鈥 the Hijazi folklore, the songs, and the heritage.鈥

Beyond the family circle, the sabi has also become an economic opportunity. Wedding shops now offer Hijazi-style 鈥渮afa鈥 entrances for newborns, while specialty stores such as Bamo Baby sell clothing, accessories, and themed gifts for infants and mothers. Some events even feature children鈥檚 singing groups to keep younger guests entertained.

These businesses, combined with traditional practices, highlight how the sabi has evolved without losing its essence.

Despite changes in scale and style, the essence of the sabi and aqiqah remains the same: a chance to strengthen family ties, express gratitude to God, and celebrate life鈥檚 blessings.

Whether marked with a modest home gathering or a fully designed event complete with decor and photographers, the tradition reflects 海角直播鈥檚 ability to preserve cultural heritage while adapting to contemporary lifestyles.

Global Water Expo emphasizes importance of recycling water
  • Both global and local participants at the expo introduced recycling technologies, as water scarcity is one of the biggest challenges for 海角直播
  • Nicholas Burnett: Forward-thinking countries can leverage modern wastewater technologies to secure water supplies

RIYADH: As the Global Water Expo comes to an end today in Riyadh, a group of core messages was highlighted during the three-day exhibition, including the critical urgency for sustainable management methods.

Both global and local participants at the expo introduced recycling technologies, as water scarcity is one of the biggest challenges for 海角直播.

鈥淲astewater is made up of water, energy, mineral and nutrient resources that can be treated, separated and safely reused across a wide range of applications 鈥 including mitigation of water scarcity. Yet, the majority of wastewater around the world is discharged into the environment 鈥 and without proper treatment, posing serious risks to both public health and natural ecosystems,鈥 said Nicholas Burnett, head of water recycling at Enowa.

Additionally, Burnett praised 海角直播鈥檚 dedicated efforts in water systems and how it manages its operations.

鈥淔orward-thinking countries can leverage modern wastewater technologies to secure water supplies, reducing pressure on freshwater sources and minimizing environmental impact 鈥 a shift that we are seeing in practice in 海角直播,鈥 he said.

鈥淚n 2022, the Kingdom treated nearly 2 billion cubic meters of wastewater 鈥 22 percent of the recycled water produced was used for agricultural crop irrigation, up from 16 percent in 2017. The aim is to reuse 25 percent of treated wastewater by the end of this year.鈥

Burnett told Arab News: 鈥淎t Enowa, we are building a sustainable water management system that captures and reuses 100 percent of wastewater 鈥 with zero waste and no environmental discharge during treatment.鈥

He mentioned that in 2024, Enowa recycled 7 million liters of wastewater daily, which was all 鈥渦sed to support the cultivation of native plants in the NEOM Nature Reserve.鈥

Furthermore, Enowa is advancing its resource recovery by transforming sludge into fertilizers and exploring biogas recapture to power facilities.

鈥淭his integrated approach not only supports NEOM鈥檚 sustainability goals but also offers a scalable model for water-stressed regions worldwide,鈥 Burnett explained.

Overall, the Global Water Expo showcased in a duration of three days water recycling solutions offered by many experts, highlighting local water systems companies while also introducing other international players in the water treatment solutions industry globally.

Through innovative treatment advancements and resource recovery systems, the Kingdom is drawing the path for other nations in the region who can address water scarcity while at the same time promoting economic growth and environmental protection.
