RIYADH: The Shigry mountains in Tabuk, in northern º£½ÇÖ±²¥, stand as a testament to the history of the Earth, with the rocks and red sands telling a story spanning more than 542 million years.

According to Abdulaziz Ibn Laboun, founder of the Saudi Geologists Cooperative, these mountains are an “open geological museum†containing the oldest sedimentary rocks in the Kingdom.

He notes that beyond their scientific value they hold significant economic importance, with their sandstone rocks serving as natural groundwater reservoirs vital for agriculture in the region.

Global Water Expo emphasizes importance of recycling water
  • Both global and local participants at the expo introduced recycling technologies, as water scarcity is one of the biggest challenges for º£½ÇÖ±²¥
  • Nicholas Burnett: Forward-thinking countries can leverage modern wastewater technologies to secure water supplies

RIYADH: As the Global Water Expo comes to an end today in Riyadh, a group of core messages was highlighted during the three-day exhibition, including the critical urgency for sustainable management methods.

Both global and local participants at the expo introduced recycling technologies, as water scarcity is one of the biggest challenges for º£½ÇÖ±²¥.

“Wastewater is made up of water, energy, mineral and nutrient resources that can be treated, separated and safely reused across a wide range of applications — including mitigation of water scarcity. Yet, the majority of wastewater around the world is discharged into the environment — and without proper treatment, posing serious risks to both public health and natural ecosystems,†said Nicholas Burnett, head of water recycling at Enowa.

Additionally, Burnett praised º£½ÇÖ±²¥â€™s dedicated efforts in water systems and how it manages its operations.

“Forward-thinking countries can leverage modern wastewater technologies to secure water supplies, reducing pressure on freshwater sources and minimizing environmental impact — a shift that we are seeing in practice in º£½ÇÖ±²¥,†he said.

“In 2022, the Kingdom treated nearly 2 billion cubic meters of wastewater — 22 percent of the recycled water produced was used for agricultural crop irrigation, up from 16 percent in 2017. The aim is to reuse 25 percent of treated wastewater by the end of this year.â€

Burnett told Arab News: “At Enowa, we are building a sustainable water management system that captures and reuses 100 percent of wastewater — with zero waste and no environmental discharge during treatment.â€

He mentioned that in 2024, Enowa recycled 7 million liters of wastewater daily, which was all “used to support the cultivation of native plants in the NEOM Nature Reserve.â€

Furthermore, Enowa is advancing its resource recovery by transforming sludge into fertilizers and exploring biogas recapture to power facilities.

“This integrated approach not only supports NEOM’s sustainability goals but also offers a scalable model for water-stressed regions worldwide,†Burnett explained.

Overall, the Global Water Expo showcased in a duration of three days water recycling solutions offered by many experts, highlighting local water systems companies while also introducing other international players in the water treatment solutions industry globally.

Through innovative treatment advancements and resource recovery systems, the Kingdom is drawing the path for other nations in the region who can address water scarcity while at the same time promoting economic growth and environmental protection.

  • Ambassador hails º£½ÇÖ±²¥ as a key partner of the African countryÌı

RIYADH: The Cameroonian Embassy in Riyadh marked its country’s 53rd national day on Wednesday in a postponed event held under the theme “Army and nation united for a Cameroon turned toward peace and prosperity.â€
Speaking at the evening occasion, Cameroon’s Ambassador to º£½ÇÖ±²¥ Iya Tidjani said: “The Embassy of Cameroon, my wife and I welcome you all to the Cultural Palace for celebration of the 53rd national day. Cameroon’s national day is celebrated every year on May 20, a date that since 1972 marks the reunification of West Cameroon and East Cameroon into a unitary state.

“Due to scheduling constraints, we were compelled to postpone the celebration here in Riyadh. We are pleased that you were able to include this important event in your program, and to join us in celebrating, with shared joy, the renewed unity of our country,†he added.

The ambassador thanked Riyadh Mayor Prince Faisal bin Abdulaziz bin Ayyaf and Saudi officials for honoring the ceremony, adding: “This is undoubtedly a testament to the excellent cooperative relations that exist between the two countries.â€
Tidjani hailed flourishing relations between his country and the Kingdom.
“Indeed, since 1966, the year diplomatic relations were established between the two countries, these relations have continued to deepen and diversify — politically, economically, in the security field and culturally— in the common interest of both nations,†he said.
“This positive development is the result of the unwavering and repeatedly reaffirmed will of Paul Biya, president of Cameroon, and King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.â€
The ambassador highlighted the signing of a general cooperation agreement between his country and º£½ÇÖ±²¥, ratified in 2023.
It serves as a concrete legal foundation on which relations can be further developed, he said.
“I am firmly convinced that this milestone will serve to further strengthen and expand our exchanges, particularly in the fields of investment, trade, mining, agriculture, tourism, sports and beyond,†Tidjani added.
“I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate to Saudi businessmen and to Saudi companies in both the public and private sectors that the Embassy of Cameroon in Riyadh, as well as the consulate general in Jeddah, remain fully at their disposal. We also stand prepared to facilitate and organize connections with their counterparts in Cameroon,†he said.
The ambassador praised º£½ÇÖ±²¥ for playing a major role in global politics, including through trade and finance, the Kingdom’s commitment to fostering solidarity and strengthening unity within the Ummah, as well as its efforts to promote peace and stability in the Middle East and beyond.
º£½ÇÖ±²¥ is a key partner of Cameroon, with both countries sharing similar perspectives on many major international issues, Tidjani said.
He praised the Kingdom for mobilizing the Saudi Fund for Development and a medical caravan in aid of Cameroon. The latter has been sent annually since 2000 to deliver vital medical care to the Cameroonian population.
Tidjani highlighted Cameroon’s upcoming presidential elections on Oct. 12. The country’s diaspora in the Kingdom can exercise their voting rights by attending polling stations, he said.
Three polling stations will open at the embassy in Riyadh and the consulate general in Jeddah on election day from 8 a.m to 6 p.m.
