In the vast deserts of the Kingdom, something remarkable is happening. Barren sand is being transformed into fertile soil, and at the heart of this transformation are 海角直播 women.

As a scientist working in sustainability, I expected to be part of an ambitious vision for environmental restoration. What I did not expect was that women would be leading this effort, applying cutting-edge science to revive the land.

海角直播 is at a defining moment in its sustainability journey. With Vision 2030鈥檚 Green Saudi Initiative, the Kingdom is making bold investments in reforestation, food security, and climate-resilient agriculture.

But what often goes unrecognized is that Saudi women are leading it.

Saudi women now make up 40 percent of science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, graduates, outpacing many Western countries. But they are not just entering labs. They are leading groundbreaking projects in land restoration, from researching water-saving solutions to applying innovative soil technology.

Their presence is growing in some of the Kingdom鈥檚 most critical sectors, including climate science, sustainable agriculture, and land restoration. In my own work, I see this firsthand.

Whether in research labs, universities, or the field, Saudi women are leading projects that turn deserts into fertile land, improve water conservation, and develop solutions for a greener future.

One of 海角直播鈥檚 biggest environmental challenges is desertification 鈥 the loss of arable land due to climate conditions and soil degradation. It requires scientific breakthroughs, innovation, and long-term commitment.

Across the country, Saudi women are rising to meet it.

Whether in research labs, universities, or the field, Saudi women are leading projects that turn deserts into fertile land, improve water conservation, and develop solutions for a greener future.

At Saudi Desert Control, we use Liquid Natural Clay to turn desert sand into fertile soil by increasing its ability to retain water and nutrients. Women scientists and engineers are leading the application of this technology, ensuring that 海角直播 can produce food sustainably in one of the world鈥檚 most arid climates.

Across the Kingdom, female researchers and agricultural engineers are reducing water consumption, implementing regenerative farming techniques, and introducing climate-resilient crops.

Science thrives on diverse perspectives. In sustainability and agriculture 鈥 fields that directly impact communities 鈥 the inclusion of women leads to better decision-making, smarter solutions, and long-term resilience.

Many of the most forward-thinking, practical solutions I have encountered in 海角直播 come from female scientists and engineers. Their leadership is making 海角直播鈥檚 sustainability push more effective, inclusive, and future-proof.

海角直播鈥檚 transformation is often spoken of as something coming in the future. But working alongside incredible female colleagues, I can confidently say the future is already here.

Saudi women are not just part of this change 鈥 they are turning sand into soil and shaping a more sustainable world.

I for one celebrate the women leading STEM fields, restoring land, conserving resources, and ensuring that 海角直播鈥檚 next chapter is one of sustainability.

To the young women of 海角直播 pursuing science and sustainability 鈥 your work will define the future. And the future is now.

Pakistan urges global action on rising 鈥業slamophobia鈥 at UN hate speech event
  • The event was organized by Morocco and the UN Office on Genocide Prevention
  • Pakistan expresses commitment to inclusion, calls diversity a collective strength

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan鈥檚 top diplomat at the United Nations on Monday called for a collective international response to rising 鈥淚slamophobia,鈥 warning that unchecked hate speech and extremist narratives were fracturing societies and threatening global peace and stability.

Speaking at a high-level event to mark the International Day for Countering Hate, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said growing intolerance, fueled by politicized media and digital platforms, was targeting not only Muslims but also people of various races, genders and nationalities.

The International Day for Countering Hate is observed each year on June 18, following its institutionalization by the UN in 2023 in response to the global rise in hate-driven violence, incitement and disinformation.

Monday鈥檚 event at the UN was hosted by Morocco and the Office on Genocide Prevention.

鈥淭he surge in Islamophobia through discriminatory laws, defamation of religious symbols and orchestrated vilification are particularly alarming trends,鈥 Ahmad said. 鈥淢edia platforms, especially those aligned with dominant political forces, have enabled this hate.鈥

鈥淪imilar tactics now target other marginalized communities,鈥 he continued. 鈥淲e also observe rising racism and xenophobia fueling division and exclusion. These trends demand urgent collective response.鈥

Ahmad welcomed the recent appointment of the UN Special Envoy on Combating Islamophobia, an institutional step initiated through a resolution presented by Pakistan on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in March last year.

Muslim countries, in recent years, have collectively raised their voice against acts of desecration such as the public burning of the Qur鈥檃n in several European countries.

Many of these incidents have coincided with the political rise of far-right parties, which have capitalized on anti-immigrant sentiment and targeted Islam and Muslim communities.

Muslim states have called for an end to such practices and have advocated for legal measures to prevent the desecration of religious symbols, arguing that such acts have no connection to free speech and must be addressed under international frameworks protecting religious and cultural dignity.

The Pakistani envoy said the appointment came at a critical time and urged full implementation of the UN Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech.

He also condemned digital platforms and algorithmic systems, saying they reward sensationalism and amplify identity-based hate, warning that truth was being sacrificed in politicized media environments.

Ahmad reaffirmed Pakistan鈥檚 commitment to promoting respect, inclusion and peaceful coexistence, saying that diversity must be seen as a collective strength.

Fast-moving brush fire on Hawaii鈥檚 Maui island evacuates about 50 people. No structures have burned
  • Officials said it was 85 percent contained as of Monday morning

HONOLULU: A fast-moving Hawaii brush fire fueled by fierce winds forced the evacuation of about 50 Maui residents on the opposite side of the same island where a devastating blaze killed over 100 people two years ago.
The fire started Sunday in a sparsely populated area with land set aside for Native Hawaiians.
Here鈥檚 what we know about the fire so far:
Fire size now estimated at 330 acres
The Kahikinui was initially estimated at 500 acres (202 hectares), but aerial surveys overnight put the estimate at about 330 acres (134 hectares), Maui鈥檚 fire department said. The fire is 85 percent contained.
The remote, challenging terrain made it difficult to estimate the fire鈥檚 size, the department said in a statement. A police drone showed hot spots, but none flared overnight.
No injuries or structural damage was reported. Weather conditions were mostly sunny Monday with a high of 67 degrees Fahrenheit (19 degrees Celsius) and east winds of about 15 mph (24 kph), gusting up to about 25 mph (40 kph).
The US Drought Monitor says all of Maui is in drought.
Authorities conducted door-to-door evacuations and part of a highway remains closed.
Flashbacks to an earlier fire
Warren Aganos was on his family鈥檚 Hawaiian Homelands lot preparing to go on a Father鈥檚 Day hunt when a neighbor called him around 9 a.m. telling him a fire had broken out.
鈥淚 hung up and raced out, I didn鈥檛 let her finish,鈥 said Aganos, who has been slowly rebuilding the three structures his family lost in a 2016 brush fire that burned over 5,000 acres (2,000 hectares) in the same area. 鈥淚 was thinking about the last one,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t was super emotional.鈥
Aganos said he rushed in his truck to make sure first responders knew where the community鈥檚 water storage tanks were before navigating Kahikinui鈥檚 dirt roads down to the highway where he could see smoke billowing over the hillside. The community lacks electrical and water infrastructure, and some of the roads are only navigable by four-wheel drive.
State and local leaders signed emergency proclamations so that the Hawaii National Guard can help and counties can access assistance.
What is the region like?
Kahikinui is less populated and developed than Lahaina, which was the Hawaiian Kingdom鈥檚 capital in the 1800s and is now a popular tourist destination. Kahikinui was used for cattle ranching for many years and is near a state forest reserve.
The fire department sent engines, tankers and a helicopter to battle the blaze. Three bulldozers cut firebreaks in the lower part of the community, Desiree Graham, co-chair of Kahikinui鈥檚 firewise committee, said.
The area has 104 Hawaiian homeland lots of 10 to 20 acres (4 to 8 hectares) each. About 40 lots have homes, including 15 with full-time residents. Some lots have more than one home, Graham said.
A state agency issues lot leases under a program Congress created in 1921 to help Native Hawaiians become economically self-sufficient. Those with at least 50 percent Hawaiian blood quantum can apply for a 99-year lease for $1 a year.
Fire devastated Lahaina nearly two years ago
Maui is still recovering from the massive inferno that enveloped Lahaina in August 2023.
That fire was the deadliest in the US in more than a century. It destroyed thousands of properties and caused an estimated $5.5 billion in damage. University of Hawaii researchers say unemployment and poverty rose after the blaze.
The Kahikinui fire may seem small compared to continental US fires, but it鈥檚 significant for an island of 735 square miles (1,903 square kilometers).
Other Western fires
Crews also are battling wildfires in the Pacific Northwest, around the Great Basin, in California and the Rockies.
National Weather Service forecasters and federal land managers have warned in recent weeks that fire danger is escalating in many places amid rising daytime temperatures and single-digit humidity levels.
The risks won鈥檛 start to wane 鈥 at least in the southwestern US 鈥 until the monsoon starts to kick in, bringing much-needed rain. In southern New Mexico, a wildfire ballooned to nearly 30 square miles (78 square kilometers) over the weekend in the Gila National Forest.
The flames forced the evacuations of homes that dot the mountains north of Silver City, blocked access to the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument and prompted air quality warnings as smoke drifted north. Campgrounds and access points to the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail also were closed.
In Oregon, several dozen homes in Wasco County were destroyed by a fire that started last Wednesday. Some evacuations remained, but fire managers said Monday that the threat to structures had diminished.
So far this year, the nation has seen double the number of fires as last year but the acreage is less, according to the National Interagency Fire Center. More than 2,700 wildland firefighters and support personnel were assigned to 15 large wildfires across the country.

Flamengo鈥檚 impressive Club World Cup start sets up mouth-watering Chelsea showdown
  • The Brazilian Cup champions next face Chelsea, who beat MLS side LAFC 2-0 earlier in the day, in a mouth-watering clash at Philadelphia鈥檚 Lincoln Financial Field on Friday

Flamengo鈥檚 dominant 2-0 victory over Esperance de Tunis on Monday will have caught the attention of Group D favorites Chelsea, and suggests the Brazilian side could have a significant impact at FIFA鈥檚 revamped tournament.
The Brazilian Cup champions next face Chelsea, who beat MLS side LAFC 2-0 earlier in the day, in a mouth-watering clash at Philadelphia鈥檚 Lincoln Financial Field on Friday that should determine the group winner.
WHY IT鈥橲 IMPORTANT:
It has been over a decade since a European team lost at the Club World Cup but the ease with which Flamengo dispensed with Esperance will give them confidence they can end that run when they face Chelsea on Friday.
The London side were the last European team to taste defeat at the tournament, losing to Corinthians in the 2012 final, but since then the continent鈥檚 clubs are undefeated in 27 matches.
Palmeiras and Boca Juniors came close to wins over Porto and Benfica in their openers at the current edition, and South American sides have six games left against European opposition in the group stage to break their stranglehold.
Flamengo are unbeaten in over a month and lead the Brazilian league playing a solid brand of football under the calm guidance of former Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis.
KEY QUOTES:
Flamengo midfielder Jorginho: 鈥淲e enjoyed the goal, and the fans were amazing, as I鈥檝e seen before but now I鈥檓 living it. The most important thing is the performance that we did. I think we controlled the game, we played well and we deserved the win, I think that was the most important thing for us.
鈥淚t felt really good, because we have great players who understand the game, I feel that we can understand each other very quickly, and it鈥檚 going to be a good bond with the group and everything, so we just need to keep working together and move forward.鈥
Flamengo manager Filipe Luis: 鈥淎t the beginning we managed to control the game with possession, then after the first goal we slowed down a bit and that cost us a bit of time with the ball. But in the second half we managed to score the second goal and a great win, three points. Now we have to face the next chapter for this group, Chelsea is a difficult team, but very happy with the win.鈥 (Reporting by Fernando Kallas; Editing by Peter Rutherford )

Pakistan, 19 other nations call for nuclear-free Middle East as Israel-Iran war escalates
  • The statement stresses the need to refrain from targeting IAEA-monitored nuclear facilities
  • It calls for ceasefire, seeks maritime security, freedom of navigation under international law

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and 19 other countries on Tuesday issued a joint statement condemning Israel鈥檚 military attacks on Iran as a violation of international law, while calling for a nuclear-free Middle East and a return to diplomacy following a comprehensive ceasefire and de-escalation.

The statement came after Israel launched surprise airstrikes on Iranian nuclear and military facilities on Friday, in the middle of Tehran鈥檚 ongoing nuclear negotiations with Washington.

Israel and Iran traded missile fire for a fifth consecutive day on Tuesday, as US President Donald Trump warned Tehran residents to 鈥渋mmediately evacuate鈥 and cut short his participation at a G7 summit in Canada.

The US Defense Department confirmed the redeployment of 鈥渁dditional capabilities鈥 to the region, with the USS Nimitz leaving Southeast Asia amid reports of its new Middle East mission. The Chinese embassy in Tel Aviv also urged its citizens to evacuate Israel immediately.

Amid these developments, 20 countries, including Pakistan, 海角直播, the United Arab Emirates, T眉rkiye, Qatar and Oman, voiced a 鈥渃ategorical rejection鈥 of Israel鈥檚 military action and warned of its destabilizing implications.

鈥淸There is an] imperative need to halt Israeli hostilities against Iran, which come during a time of increasing tension in the Middle East, and to work toward de-escalation, to achieve a comprehensive ceasefire and restoration of calm,鈥 the statement said.

It called for 鈥渢he urgent necessity of establishing a Middle East Zone Free of Nuclear Weapons and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction, which shall apply to all States in the region without exception in line with relevant international resolutions, as well as the urgent need for all countries of the Middle East to join the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).鈥

The statement further stressed the importance of refraining from targeting nuclear facilities safeguarded by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), warning that such actions violate international humanitarian law and the 1949 Geneva Conventions.

The signatories also emphasized that negotiations remain the only viable path toward a sustainable resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue and called for a swift return to diplomatic engagement.

All the countries stressed the importance of protecting freedom of navigation and maritime security in accordance with international law, fearing that tensions could spill over into shipping lanes vital to global trade.

鈥淒iplomacy, dialogue, and adherence to the principles of good neighborliness, in accordance with international law and the UN Charter, remain the only viable path to resolving crises in the region,鈥 it continued. 鈥淢ilitary means cannot bring about a lasting resolution to the ongoing crisis.鈥

Williams scores 40 points and Thunder win 120-109 for a 3-2 NBA Finals lead over Pacers
  • Williams was 14 of 24 from the field, and Gilgeous-Alexander added 10 assists
  • Teams that win Game 5 of an NBA Finals that was tied at 2-2 have gone on to win the series 23 times in 31 previous opportunities, or 74 percent

OKLAHOMA CITY: Jalen Williams scored a career playoff-high 40 points, MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander added 31 and the Oklahoma City Thunder moved one win from a title by beating the Indiana Pacers 120-109 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Monday night.

It was the 10th 鈥 and by far, the biggest 鈥 time the Thunder stars combined for more than 70 points in a game. Williams was 14 of 24 from the field, and Gilgeous-Alexander added 10 assists.

Pascal Siakam had 28 points for Indiana, who now trail the series 3-2 and will host Game 6 on Thursday night. TJ McConnell added 18 for the Pacers, who whittled an 18-point deficit down to two in the fourth 鈥 then watched the Thunder pull away again, and for good.

鈥淭hat鈥檚 a really good team over there,鈥 Williams said. 鈥淵ou just don鈥檛 trip into the finals.鈥

True. But now, everything favors the Thunder.

Teams that win Game 5 of an NBA Finals that was tied at 2-2 have gone on to win the series 23 times in 31 previous opportunities, or 74 percent. And teams with a 3-2 lead in the finals have won 40 times in 49 previous opportunities, or 82 percent.

But Game 5 was not easy. Far from it.

Down by 18 late in the second quarter, the Pacers 鈥 the comeback kings of these playoffs, with as many wins in this postseason from 15 points down or more (five) than the rest of the league has combined, including in Game 1 of this series 鈥 did what they do, chipping away. And they did it with Tyrese Haliburton reduced to basically playing decoy on offense because of a leg issue that he aggravated in the first quarter.

Led by McConnell, who scored 13 points in just under seven minutes of the third, the Pacers got within five late in that quarter.

Then, Siakam went to work 鈥 a pair of free throws with 9:19 left got Indiana within four, then a 3-pointer about a minute later made it 95-93. In the play-by-play era of the NBA, starting with the 1997 playoffs, teams with leads of 15 points or more in the finals were 80-9.

Make that 81-9 now, and the Thunder are one win away.

鈥淭hat was honestly the same exact game as Game 1,鈥 Williams said. 鈥淟earning through these finals, that鈥檚 what makes a team good.鈥

One more win, and his team will be certified as great.
