º£½ÇÖ±²¥â€™s road to becoming FIFA World Cup 2034 host
  • Kingdom goes uncontested
  • Bid receives FIFA’s highest-ever rating

RIYADH: FIFA officially ratified º£½ÇÖ±²¥ as host of the World Cup 2034 on Wednesday in what was a fairly drama-free affair for an obvious reason — the sport’s global governing body confirmed the name of the lone, uncontested bidder as the host.

Nevertheless, the country has proved itself worthy of the title after a journey of several years that culminated in achieving FIFA’s highest-ever rating for a bid submission and ultimately winning.

For the Kingdom, the journey from bidder to winner of the host of the most widely viewed and followed sporting event in the world came after an interesting turn of events.

The journey began with º£½ÇÖ±²¥ reportedly holding talks in September 2022 with sports chiefs in Egypt and Greece over an audacious joint bid to host the World Cup 2030.

Ìı

“The three countries are working flat out†and “the application to organize the tournament is being studied,†Mohammed Fawzi, spokesman for the Egyptian Sports Ministry, said at the time.

Greece’s Hellenic Football Federation in Athens had also confirmed that the three countries were holding discussions about a joint bid.

However, whatever discussions were held did not result in a bid being submitted, and the Saudi Tourism Ministry in November 2022 confirmed that no official bid to host the World Cup 2030 was made.

Changing the plan, the Kingdom next year started seeking support for staging the mega sporting event alone in 2034, and in October 2023 announced its intention to bid to host the World Cup 2034.

On Oct. 9, the º£½ÇÖ±²¥n Football Federation submitted a letter of intent to bid to host the 2034 World Cup.

Yasser Al-Misehal, SAFF president, said at the time: “This is the second step of a hugely exciting journey that the nation is embarking on. The 2034 FIFA World Cup is our invitation to the world to witness º£½ÇÖ±²¥â€™s development, experience its culture and become part of its history.â€

Led by the SAFF, the bid for 2034 intended from the beginning to deliver a world-class tournament drawing inspiration from the Kingdom’s social and economic transformation and the deep-rooted passion for football.

º£½ÇÖ±²¥â€™s inaugural bid was backed by the Kingdom’s growing experience of hosting world-class football events and its plans to welcome fans across the world to the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup and 2027 AFC Asian Cup.

Reflecting on the intention to bid, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman emphasized that º£½ÇÖ±²¥â€™s desire to bid for the tournament was a reflection of the Kingdom’s progress in all sectors.

Under the Saudi Vision 2030, sport is playing a significant role in contributing to the country’s economic growth and enhancing the quality of life for all, and has an ability to unite and bring different cultures together.

The Kingdom said on Oct. 4, 2023 that it would bid for the 2034 event, minutes after the process was launched.

As a result of the tournament’s continental rotation, FIFA invited only member countries of the Asian and Oceanian confederations to apply.

Indonesia considered a joint bid with Australia, or other countries such as New Zealand, Malaysia and Singapore, but on Oct. 19 it swung behind º£½ÇÖ±²¥â€™s bid.

Australia, which hosted the Women’s World Cup 2023, was also a contender but withdrew its interest after the Asian Football Confederation’s decision to back the Saudi bid.

Football Australia chief executive James Johnson said bidding for the tournament was “not going to be favorable to Australia.â€

He said: “Saudi is a strong bid. They have a lot of resources, and not just for the 2034 World Cup. From the government, top down they are prioritizing investment in football. That is difficult to compete with.â€

Last October, a FIFA delegation arrived in the Kingdom to review the details of the bid. As proposed, 48 teams will be participating at venues in one country for the first time in history.

The delegation visited the Saudi cities proposed to host the tournament, inspected the sports projects and facilities included in the bid, and reviewed other preparations.

It was announced on Oct. 31, 2023 that the football World Cup, the biggest sports show on Earth, was set to come to º£½ÇÖ±²¥.

“The Kingdom is the only remaining bidder for the 2034 tournament after sole rivals Australia pulled out,†the sport’s world governing body FIFA said, adding that the decision would be ratified officially at a special FIFA congress at the end of 2024.

On March 1, 2024 SAFF launched its formal bid to host the FIFA World Cup 2034 under the slogan “Growing Together.â€

The campaign proved a formality when the Kingdom became the only country to enter the contest to host the tournament.

The federation, as part of its formal bid, has unveiled a bid logo, website, as well as a short film that celebrates the passion, spirit and diversity of football in the Kingdom.

Al-Misehal said: “Telling our football story to the world is of massive importance. And we believe ‘Growing Together’ is the perfect, yet simple description of our approach to hopefully hosting the tournament in 10 years’ time.â€

The bid was submitted to FIFA officials in Paris on July 29, 2024 by a delegation headed by the Saudi minister of sports Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki bin Faisal, and Al-Misehal.

“With this candidacy, we intend to host the exceptional edition that brings together 48 teams for the first time in the history of the tournament in one country,†Prince Abdulaziz said at the time.

“º£½ÇÖ±²¥â€™s bid to host the FIFA World Cup 2034 is a bid for the future. It is for our children and those who dream big,†he added.

The Kingdom’s bid to host the World Cup 2034 received a rating of 419.8 out of 500 in November 2024, the highest technical rating ever given by FIFA.

The announcement came just ahead of the federation’s general assembly on Dec. 11 that officially ratified º£½ÇÖ±²¥ as host of the World Cup 2034.

  • At Los Angeles, Luka Doncic scored 49 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and passed off eight assists to lead the Los Angeles Lakers over Minnesota 128-110
  • Donovan Mitchell’s 35 points powered Cleveland to a 131-124 victory at Brooklyn

NEW YORK: In their first game since guard Terry Rozier was arrested in an FBI sports gambling probe, his Miami Heat teammates unleashed a scoring barrage in a 146-114 NBA win at Memphis on Friday.

Bam Adebayo scored 24 points and reserve Nikola Jovic added 20 to lead eight double-digit scorers as the Heat (1-1) produced the third-highest one-game point total in team history.

Miami also scored a one-half team record 86 points in the first two quarters in taking a 86-47 halftime lead, the largest in Heat history dating to 1988.

As the scandal swirled around the league on the fourth day of the 2025-26 campaign, Adebayo made it clear Rozier has Heat players’ backing him.

“We stand behind him. Full support,†Adebayo said. “You support him through and through. That’s our brother at the end of the day.â€

Rozier and Portland head coach Chauncey Billups were placed on indefinite leave by the NBA after being arrested Thursday in the gambling investigation.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said the hectic NBA schedule leaves the team no choice but to move ahead quickly without Rozier, who didn’t play in a season-opening loss on Wednesday.

“Terry is somebody who is very dear to all of us,†Spoelstra said. “He’s had a real positive impact on our locker room... We send our thoughts and our care for him as he goes through this.â€

Portland routed visiting Golden State 139-119 in the first Trail Blazers contest since Billups was arrested, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter guiding the effort as Portland’s interim head coach.

“We all had great experiences with Chauncey and how he coached,†Splitter said. “We’re thinking of him and his family but we have a job to do.â€

Israeli forward Deni Avdija’s 26 points led eight Trail Blazers scorers in double figures.

“It’s a tough moment but I got to do my job,†Splitter said. “I’m looking forward to showing my skills and leading a team... I wasn’t expecting this but I have to be ready.â€

At Los Angeles, Luka Doncic scored 49 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and passed off eight assists to lead the Los Angeles Lakers over Minnesota 128-110.

Doncic, who scored 43 points in a season-opening loss to Golden State, became the first Laker to open a season with back-to-back 40-point efforts.

The 26-year-old Slovenian guard scored 23 points in the first quarter to match a team record shared by Kobe Bryant and Kyle Kuzma.

“They didn’t have much when I was attacking the paint in the first half,†Doncic said. “In the second half, we had energy.â€

Donovan Mitchell’s 35 points powered Cleveland to a 131-124 victory at Brooklyn.

Greek star Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 31 points, grabbed 20 rebounds and passed off seven assists while Cole Anthony added 23 points off the bench to lead Milwaukee’s 122-116 victory at Toronto.

Jalen Brunson’s 31 points plus 26 points and 13 rebounds from Karl-Anthony Towns led New York over visiting Boston 105-95.

Frenchman Victor Wembanyama scored 29 points, pulled down 11 rebounds and blocked nine shots to spark San Antonio’s 120-116 overtime triumph at New Orleans.

Detroit’s Cade Cunningham had 21 points and Ausar Thompson added 19 to power the Pistons’ 115-111 victory at Houston, which had 37 points from Kevin Durant.

‘Real life examples’

Kyshawn George had 34 points and 11 rebounds to spark Washington to a 117-107 victory at Dallas, where Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said he hopes the scandal does not diminish attention to players.

“Hopefully that doesn’t overshadow what these young men are doing because it’s a beautiful game. They’re playing the game at a high level... Hopefully they can get that fixed.â€

Kidd said the scandal might reinforce NBA instruction about gambling issues.

“The league does an incredible job of talking about that. There’s a lot of literature that goes out,†Kidd said. “The league has done a great job of teaching and showing and now we have real life examples. We’ll learn from this and be better.â€

Domantas Sabonis sank the winning jumper with 6.4 seconds remaining to give Sacramento a 105-104 home win over Utah. Zach LaVine led the Kings with 31 points. Sabonis had 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Blue Jays stun Dodgers in World Series opener
  • 11-4 rout of the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday in Game One of the best-of-seven championship
  • Dodgers, a superteam that includes standout Shohei Ohtani, clear favorites to be MLB’s first repeat champion in 25 years

TORONTO: The Toronto Blue Jays were made to wait longer than most teams to return to the World Series but made sure to make up for lost time with an 11-4 rout of the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday in Game One of the best-of-seven championship.
Much of the talk in the build-up to the opening pitch was about how the Dodgers, a superteam that includes Japanese two-way standout Shohei Ohtani, were clear favorites to be MLB’s first repeat champion in 25 years.
But the Blue Jays, who snapped the eighth-longest active streak in MLB between World Series games played, cared little for that narrative and showed they are up for the task as they left the Dodgers wondering what went wrong.
For the Blue Jays, who broke open the game with a nine-run sixth inning that included the first pinch-hit Grand Slam in World Series history, it was about as perfect a start as any team could hope for.
“That’s kind of how we roll,†said Blue Jays manager John Schneider. “Those were some pretty terrific at-bats from everyone up and down the order.â€
The Dodgers struck first as Max Muncy and Enrique Hernandez hit singles to cash in a leadoff walk that put Los Angeles up 1-0 in the second inning. They doubled their lead in the third when an opposite-field single by Will Smith scored Mookie Betts.
But the Blue Jays responded in the fourth where Alejandro Kirk hit a leadoff single before Daulton Varsho sent the very next pitch over the center-field wall for a two-run homer that tied the game.
Toronto opened the floodgates in the sixth with three runs before Barger sent the sellout crowd of 44,353 into delirium with a four-run blast to center-field. Alejandro Kirk then added a two-run blast to put Toronto ahead 11-2.
Ohtani, who is expected to make his World Series pitching debut in Game Four on Tuesday in Los Angeles, swatted his sixth homerun of the post season in the seventh to cut into Toronto’s lead but it was too little, too late.
“I think that we can be better, we need to be better,†said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. “We just got to continue to take good at-bats and play good baseball and then we’ll be fine.â€

Composure, experience and precision: Al-Hilal simply too strong for Al-Ittihad
  • Neves at the heart of the action as Doumbia and Leonardo grab the goals to give the Riyadh side a 2-0 victory that moves them into 3rd place in the league

JEDDAH: Al-Hilal won 2-0 at Al-Ittihad on Friday to silence the reigning champions, reaffirm their title credentials and move into third place in the Saudi Pro League behind Al-Taawoun and early leaders Al-Nassr.

It was a night that pitted two former coaches of Milan’s great rivals against each other, with the visitors’ ex-Inter boss Simone Inzaghi crossing swords with the home side’s Sergio Conceicao, formerly of AC Milan.

It was a night of spectacle from the start at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah, with every seat filled. Before kick-off, Al-Ittihad’s fans unfurled a huge tifo to greet their team. The noise was fierce, the tension palpable as for the first half-hour the two giants traded blows, each in search of an opening.

Karim Benzema came close for Al-Ittihad but the breakthrough did not come until five minutes before the interval, when Al-Hilal’s Ruben Neves swung in a curling corner from the left, the ball dipping dangerously into a packed six-yard box. Amid the chaos, it was Mahamadou Doumbia who got the final touch — an unfortunate header that flew into his own net.

As Al-Ittihad battled to find a response after the break, Al-Hilal struck again in the 57th minute. Neves, again at the heart of everything, unleashed a fierce, long-range shot that goalkeeper Hamed Al-Shanqiti could only parry. Marcos Leonardo was quickest to react, slotting the rebound into the net from close range and turning the visitors’ control into comfort. The damage was done.

A few minutes from the end, Darwin Nunez once again had the ball in the Al-Ittihad net but the former Liverpool forward’s strike was ruled out for offside.

It didn’t matter. Al-Hilal’s composure, experience and precision were simply too much for the home side and the final whistle signaled a statement victory in a high-voltage rivalry that might yet define the course of the season ahead.

For now, though, Al-Hilal take the three points home to Riyadh, and at this early stage the title race is wide open.

  • Argentine superstar Lionel Messi scored twice to lift Inter Miami to a 3-1 victory over Nashville SC on Friday in the opening game of their MLS Cup round one playoff series

MIAMI: Argentine superstar Lionel Messi scored twice to lift Inter Miami to a 3-1 victory over Nashville SC on Friday in the opening game of their MLS Cup round one playoff series.
Tadeo Allende also scored for Inter, who took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series, with game two in Nashville on November 1.
Eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi was presented with the Golden Boot award before the game after topping the regular-season scoring chart with 29 goals in 28 games.
He wasted no time in demonstrating how he earned it, putting Miami up 1-0 with a diving header off a pass from Luis Suarez in the 19th minute.
Sergio Busquets had gained control of the ball near the sideline and passed to Rodrigo De Paul.
De Paul found a charging Messi, who handed off to Suarez on the right and pressed forward to connect when Suarez fed it back.
Allende’s header from a pass by Ian Fray put Miami up 2-0 in the 62nd minute.
“We know that playoffs are tough, so we wanted to start with a win at home,†De Paul said. “Hopefully, this is just the beginning. The team did very well today in terms of intensity, focus, understanding the moments when to attack and when to defend.
“We showed that we are growing as a team, and that’s the most important thing.â€
Messi made sure of the win nine minutes into second-half injury time when Nashville keeper Joe Willis leapt forward to stop a ball from Jordi Alba the left wing but failed to corral it, leaving Messi to slot home.
That meant Hany Mukhtar’s strike in the 11th and final minute of stoppage time was nothing but window dressing.
The victory comes a day after Messi inked a three-year contract extension that will keep the 38-year-old in Florida through 2028.
That was music to the ears of MLS commissioner Don Garber, who was on hand to present Messi’s Golden Boot award.
“I don’t think we ever could have imagined that Leo would have been able to deliver for this club, for this city and for this league the way he had,†Garber said.
“He has reset the trajectory for Major League Soccer and we were already doing pretty well. And I think having three more years is just going to be another gift.â€
De Paul said he was happy for Messi — and happy to have the all-time great on his team.
“We see him every weekend, it’s an advantage,†he said. “We have to keep enjoying him. I’m very happy about the renewal because it means we’ll be together for a few more years, so I’m very pleased.â€
Mascherano, whose side is chasing a first MLS Cup title, said Inter can’t afford to ease up, even though they have now beaten Nashville in two straight games including an emphatic 5-2 win in the regular-season finale.
“Nashville has a style and way of playing that can cause a lot of damage ... We made many adjustments compared to the previous match, but it won’t be enough,†Mascherano said. “We have to keep improving.â€

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver ‘deeply disturbed’ by gambling arrests of Billups and Rozier

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver ‘deeply disturbed’ by gambling arrests of Billups and Rozier

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, in his first public comments since the arrests of Portland coach Chauncey Billups and Miami guard Terry Rozier on gambling-related charges, said Friday night that he was stunned by the indictments that have rocked the league.
“My initial reaction was I was deeply disturbed,†Silver said on Amazon Prime Video, during the streaming service’s first broadcast — Boston at New York. “There’s nothing more important to the league and its fans than the integrity of the competition. I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting.â€
Such was a sentiment shared by many around the league on Friday, one day after the indictments were unsealed and nearly three dozen people — most notably, Billups and Rozier — were arrested by federal officials.
Rozier was arrested because federal officials allege he conspired with associates to help them win bets based on his statistical performance. The charges are similar to what former Toronto player Jontay Porter faced before he was banned from the league by Silver in 2024.
Billups faces charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering for participating in what federal officials called Mafia-backed rigged poker games. He also matches the credentials of someone described only as Co-Conspirator 8 in an indictment detailing how some people gave bettors inside information on player health statuses.
The arrests have overshadowed the opening week around the league.
“I apologize to our fans that we are all dealing with this situation,†Silver said during the in-game interview.
The Rozier case has gone on since March 23, 2023. He was with the Charlotte Hornets at that time, and sportsbooks — legal ones — alerted the NBA to irregular patterns involving Rozier’s “prop bets†that day. Rozier went on to play about 9 1/2 minutes, and those who bet that he would underperform the listed stat lines won those wagers. Federal officials said more than $200,000 was bet on those lines alone.
The NBA investigated and found no reason to sanction Rozier, Silver said.
“We frankly couldn’t find anything,†Silver said. “Terry at the time cooperated. He gave the league office his phone. He sat down for an interview. And we ultimately concluded that there was insufficient evidence despite that aberrational behavior to move forward.
“He still hasn’t been convicted of anything, in fairness to Terry. Obviously, it doesn’t look good. But he’s now been put on administrative leave. There’s a balance here of protecting people’s rights and investigating.â€
Los Angeles Clippers coach Tyronn Lue calls Billups his best friend and said the news was difficult to take. He said he spoke with Billups on Thursday night and was encouraged by what he heard.
“To go through something like this, the allegations, his family, my goddaughters, it was a tough day,†Lue said. “You never want to see your friends go through anything like that.â€
Milwaukee coach Doc Rivers started in the NBA as a player more than 40 years ago. He’s seen plenty of good and bad. He thought he had heard it all. That is, until now.
“It’s really sad,†Rivers said Friday.
Along with Billups and Rozier, former NBA player Damon Jones now faces charges because officials said he tipped off bettors about the health status of two Los Angeles Lakers players. The details in that indictment clearly show that Jones was discussing the availability of LeBron James and former Lakers center Anthony Davis with bettors before their statuses for certain games was known publicly. There is no indication that James or Davis had any knowledge of what Jones was alleged to be doing.
“We see now what those things can turn into and how they can spread, just how valuable this information is,†Detroit coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. “It’s a difficult situation overall but once you introduce gambling that the sports world has now, there’s going to be some very dangerous situations out there for everybody — from a security standpoint, from this type of thing standpoint.â€
All teams are required by the NBA to educate players, coaches and staff annually about what is allowed and not allowed when it comes to gambling. The Orlando Magic met recently about that very topic.
And then after the news Thursday, they met again.
“Yesterday was another reminder of what we have to do,†Magic coach Jamahl Mosley said. “We had another conversation with the group. I think the more that is going on, the more we have to continue to talk to the group about what is happening.â€
The league has at least 14 relationships with sportsbooks, including FanDuel and DraftKings. Some teams have their own deals as well. Silver has often spoken of how legal betting can be monitored and how unusual patterns can be flagged immediately, part of the reason why the league believes the integrity of games can be protected.
But some coaches and players still believe more can be done.
“The league, the game and the business of the league has evolved. And so we just have to be aware of how things evolve in this business, right?†San Antonio coach Mitch Johnson said. “It’s very important for us to continue to just be educated and mindful of everything that has to do with our business. ... I believe in Adam Silver and the league, that they will do whatever is necessary to continue to grow the game in the right way.â€
Another issue for players and coaches is how social media has given bettors ways to communicate with those inside the league. Those interactions, many have said, are not always friendly.
“The outside world, in my day, couldn’t get to us. They literally couldn’t get to us,†Rivers said Friday. “And now they can, with ease.â€
