  • The New Global Sports Conference on Aug. 24-25 included panel discussions that provided a comprehensive look at the Kingdom鈥檚 strategy for esports

RIYADH: 海角直播鈥檚 ambitious drive to become a global hub for esports and gaming has been highlighted at a Riyadh forum featuring industry leaders from around the world.

The New Global Sports Conference on Aug. 24-25 included panel discussions that provided a comprehensive look at the Kingdom鈥檚 strategic investments, innovative approaches, and broader vision for the future of esports.

Key figures outlined their plans and aspirations in a panel discussion titled 鈥淕ame On, 海角直播,鈥 showcasing the nation鈥檚 commitment to becoming a major player on the international stage.

Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Sultan, head of the Saudi Esports Federation, talked about the Kingdom鈥檚 goal to raise its status in the global esports arena.

Historically, countries such as France, China, South Korea, and Japan have been dominant, he said. However, 海角直播 aims to shift this narrative from 鈥淲hy Saudi?鈥 to 鈥淲hy not Saudi?鈥

Through events such as the Esports World Cup, and substantial investments in local talent and infrastructure, the Kingdom is determined to place itself on par with established esports powerhouses.

鈥淲e want Saudi to be a natural part of the conversation about esports, just like the other leading countries,鈥 Prince Faisal said.

The Kingdom is not only investing in events and talent, but also improving its educational programs and infrastructure to support the growth of the esports industry.

鈥淭hings like this Esports World Cup. It showcases the talent that we have on the event side, on the players鈥 side, our young men and women, showing our capabilities.

鈥淲e deserve to be on the stage with all the best teams in the world like we have here,鈥 the prince added.

Abdullah Alswaha, Saudi minister of communications and information technology, highlighted the value of the gaming industry, a sector now valued at $200 billion and tipped to exceed $1 trillion.

Adwa Alarifi, Saudi assistant minister of sport affairs, and deputy minister of strategic planning and investment, discussed the Kingdom鈥檚 strategic approach to integrating esports into its broader sports and entertainment strategy. (AN Photo/Abdulrahman Shalhoub)

Alswaha emphasized the transformative potential of esports, saying that gaming has driven technological advancements and innovation, with examples such as generative AI and its gaming connections.

鈥淚f it wasn鈥檛 for video gaming, you would not appreciate generative AI as we appreciate it today,鈥 he said. 鈥淚f it wasn鈥檛 for gaming, Elon Musk would not have started at the age of 12. Created a game called Blaster that motivated him and inspired him to move into STEM into coding into space and creating.鈥

Alswaha also discussed the social benefits of gaming, including its positive effects on mental health and social connections.

海角直播 is committed to leveraging esports not only as a profitable sector, but also as a vehicle for societal good, he said.

鈥淲e should be all collectively, very proud as publishers, investors, and global partners, because you鈥檙e part of a movement that is the innovation trigger to the next big thing, not only for a game or a sport, but for a movement that is touching artificial intelligence, innovation, space and life as we know it.鈥

Adwa Alarifi, Saudi assistant minister of sport affairs, and deputy minister of strategic planning and investment, discussed the Kingdom鈥檚 strategic approach to integrating esports into its broader sports and entertainment strategy.

Since the launch of Vision 2030, 鈥渨e鈥檝e hosted more than 100 international events in the last five years, and we鈥檝e welcomed more than 2.5 million sports fans during those events, and the impact on our people it鈥檚 just incredible,鈥 Alarifi said.

She said that the rise in sports engagement demonstrates the profound impact of global sporting events on local communities.

Alarifi said that with women鈥檚 participation in esports surpassing the global average and substantial increases in female sports involvement, the Kingdom is making notable progress in empowering women and youth.

鈥淭hanks to our leadership, today, we have equal opportunities across all sectors, for both men and women, and within sports, we have equal opportunities in the whole ecosystem, starting with players and athletes, and leading up to leaders as well.

鈥淲e鈥檙e one of the few countries in the world that have mandated all sports and federations to have a seat for a female represented on the board, and that resulted in having more than 40 women national teams across different sports.鈥

Prince Faisal also discussed the role of education in nurturing the next generation of esports professionals. The Saudi Esports Federation has established the Saudi Esports Academy to provide comprehensive training not just for players but also for roles including coaching, production, and refereeing. The initiative aims to integrate these programs into academic curricula, making esports a viable career path for Saudi youth.

鈥淥ur investment in esports is great. That really put us on the map to showcase to the world that we鈥檙e serious about what we鈥檙e doing. To me, it鈥檚 a gateway to a greater industry that we鈥檙e trying to build here,鈥 he said.

鈥淚t鈥檚 not just about esports, it鈥檚 about the gaming and esports industries. But none of that will come to any fruition if we don鈥檛 invest in the future, the next generation, and that鈥檚 the education, but also events like this, showcasing on the main stage what you can become.鈥

Mike Milanov, chairman of the Advisory Board for Gaming & Esports at Qiddiya, highlighted ambitious plans for Qiddiya鈥檚 gaming and entertainment district, which seeks to offer a comprehensive gaming experience that combines entertainment, sports, and culture.

鈥淲e鈥檙e (in Qiddiya) not afraid to take risks and think big and innovate and make sure that it鈥檚 an inclusive, global, community-centered and community-designed hub for gaming and esports. So that鈥檚 the goal of the district,鈥 he said.

The first day of the New Global Sport Conference focused on showcasing 海角直播鈥檚 determination to position itself as a global leader in esports and gaming.

The conference highlighted 海角直播鈥檚 evolving role in global esports and its potential to drive the industry forward in the years to come.

Koeman keeps Depay hungry for goals after equalling Van Persie鈥檚 record
  • Depay scored twice inside the opening 16 minutes of the Netherlands鈥 8-0 win over Malta in a World Cup qualifier to equal Robin van Persie鈥檚 record of 50

GRONINGEN: Memphis Depay was denied the chance to complete a hat-trick on Tuesday, and take sole possession of the Dutch national team鈥檚 all-time scoring record in the process, as coach Ronald Koeman said he wanted to keep him hungry for goals.
Depay scored twice inside the opening 16 minutes of the Netherlands鈥 8-0 win over Malta in a World Cup qualifier to equal Robin van Persie鈥檚 record of 50.
Both players have 50 goals in 102 international appearances.
鈥淚 equalled Van Persie, I am happy with that,鈥 said Depay, who was taken off in the 72nd minute with the Dutch 4-0 up.
鈥淏ut this is just an interim total. Of course I am also going for 51, 52 and also 53. If I had played longer, I might have scored one more tonight,鈥 he told reporters.
鈥淚 didn鈥檛 say anything about the fact that the coach took me off early. I was already happy that I could do what I鈥檝e been doing for years ... scoring.鈥
Depay scored his first international goal against Australia at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil but it has not always been smooth sailing over the years with the national team.
鈥淲e have had some turbulence over the years,鈥 he said.
鈥淭here have been many coaches and many players have come and gone. The times have shaped me and made me realize what I want.
鈥淯ltimately, it鈥檚 important that we鈥檙e at the World Cup and that we go far.鈥
Koeman has consistently backed Depay over his two spells in charge of the Dutch, even when he struggled with his club form.
鈥淚鈥檝e always thought Memphis is a great player. I think he deserves a great compliment. He鈥檚 had a year full of injuries, but he鈥檚 fit and hungry now,鈥 said Koeman.
鈥淚t鈥檚 great that he didn鈥檛 score the third, because then he stays hungry,鈥 he quipped on Dutch television.

Ben Sulayem told World Motor Sport Council members: 鈥2025 is proving to be an exciting year across all our championships with technological milestones being reached, new talent emerging and battles being fought on the track and across stages each week.

鈥淭his year is a powerful opportunity for us to innovate and grow. New agreements across our championships are unlocking fresh potential, we are enhancing the level of competition and expanding our global reach. Each race shows the passion and dedication of our community.鈥

The World Council also approved one of the final pieces of a compelling puzzle that will mark the start of a new era for the FIA World Rally Championship from 2027.

The rules have been undergoing final refinements and updates over the past six months, and confirmation in Macau of the reference volumes for bodywork cements the commitment set out by the FIA to put flexibility at the core of the regulations.

To this end, the rules define a zone in which all of the bodywork panels must be located, but manufacturers and constructors have freedom within it to scale and integrate wide-ranging designs.

This means cars ranging from saloons to hatchbacks, crossovers and completely bespoke designs could be entered over the 10-year regulation cycle through to 2037.

  • The top six teams in South America earn direct entries to the 48-team World Cup
  • Chile will miss a third consecutive World Cup after losing 2-0 at Bolivia to remain last in 10-nation round-robin competition, a result that cost head coach Ricardo Gareca his job

SAO PAOLO: A goal by Vinicius Junior secured Brazil a place in the 2026 World Cup, quite a momentous home debut for Carlo Ancelotti as head coach.

The once prolific duo at Real Madrid helped Brazil to a 1-0 win over Paraguay at Sao Paulo. Ecuador secured its place at next year鈥檚 global tournament later Tuesday with a 0-0 draw at Peru.

Defending champion Argentina, held to a 1-1 draw by Colombia, had already qualified and are assured of finishing atop South American qualifying.

Ecuador and Brazil each have 25 points in the standings, but the Ecuadorians are in second spot based on victories. The two nations are 10 points behind Argentina but, crucially, more than six points clear of the seventh-place team with two games remaining in the qualifying campaign.

The top six teams in South America earn direct entries to the 48-team World Cup.

Chile will miss a third consecutive World Cup after losing 2-0 at Bolivia to remain last in 10-nation round-robin competition, a result that cost head coach Ricardo Gareca his job.

Uruguay beat Venezuela at home 2-0, with goals from Rodrigo Aguirre and Giorgian de Arrascaeta, and edged closer to one of the direct spots with 24 points.

Venezuela, with 18, is one ahead of Bolivia in the contest for seventh place that grants an intercontinental playoff berth.

Lionel Messi had a quiet night in Argentina鈥檚 draw with Colombia in Buenos Aires. Luis Diaz opened the scoring for the visitors in the 24th minute. Enzo Fernandez was sent off in the 70th minute to the disappointment of more than 80,000 fans at the Monumental de Nunez Stadium.

But Julian Alvarez scored the equalizer in the 81st with a low crossed shot.

Madrid-Sao Paulo

Ancelotti received some frustration from fans after Thursday鈥檚 0-0 draw with Ecuador, as his team focused on defending the entire match. The Italian coach, who turned 66 Tuesday, promised changes to make his team more aggressive at the Neo Quimica Arena.

He was welcomed by 46,000 fans, including NBA star Gianni Antetokounmpo, who displayed a tifo in yellow and green that read 鈥淧arabens, Carleto鈥 (Happy birthday, Carleto in Portuguese).

Gabriel Martinelli replaced midfielder Gerson and was one of the best players of the encounter. Raphinha returned after suspension and created many problems for Paraguay鈥檚 defense. And Vinicius Junior was often seen as a targetman, sharing the duties with Matheus Cunha.

A mistake by Paraguay鈥檚 defense, a low cross by Cunha and a gentle touch by Brazil鈥檚 new No. 10 produced the only goal of the match. 鈥淚t is for you,鈥 the striker told the coach as he celebrated.

Despite the low score, the hosts were much more aggressive than in most of its games in this World Cup qualifying campaign.

鈥淲e needed to win here for our people. Now we have more time to work, see what we can improve,鈥 Vinicius said after the match. He won鈥檛 play Brazil鈥檚 next game in qualifying against Chile due to suspension. 鈥淲e need to celebrate this. After September it is all about the World Cup.鈥

After the final whistle, a clip of Ancelotti鈥檚 first days on the job was shown in big screens around the stadium. A raucous celebration erupted again, as if the Italian coach had brought new life to a team that only three months ago appeared lost and doomed.

He said the team was balanced despite having four strikers. He also said that Cunha鈥檚 role, as a playmaker, is the one he figures will be Neymar鈥檚 if the veteran fully recovers his fitness.

鈥淚t鈥檚 no problem to play with three or four up front. We need 10 players to run, to sacrifice,鈥 Ancelotti said. 鈥淩odrygo did this many times, I know him well. And Neymar will also do it.鈥

Golden generation gone

Chile鈥檚 golden generation won two Copa America titles 鈥 in 2015 and 鈥16 鈥 but is out of contention for next year鈥檚 expanded 48-team tournament.

鈥淪ad, I am feeling bad. Never lived something like this. We have to ask people to forgive us,鈥 veteran Chile striker Alexis S谩nchez said. 鈥淲e have to keep working. There鈥檚 change already, the golden generation is buried, I am the only one left.鈥

Bolivia scored first via Miguel Terceros in the fifth minute and added a second in the 90th with Enzo Monteiro at the 4,150-meter high El Alto Stadium, outside La Paz.

Gareca, the 67-year-old Argentinian coach who took Peru to the 2018 World Cup, told a post-game news conference he was leaving the team after a 17-match stretch that included four wins, four draws and nine losses.

Final rounds

The South American qualifying tournament will finish in September. Uruguay and Paraguay each need one point to secure their direct spots. The Uruguayans will face Peru and Chile. The Paraguayans will take on Ecuador and Peru.

Colombia, in sixth place with 22 points, will play for its World Cup future against Bolivia and Venezuela. Bolivia will seek its first chance to play at the World Cup since 1994 against the Colombians and then Brazil. Venezuela鈥檚 rivals will be Argentina and Colombia.
