Saudi envoy urges Security Council to halt Israeli settlements, end Gaza siege and protect holy sites
  • Kingdom鈥檚 representative to the UN, Abdulaziz Alwasil, reaffirms his country鈥檚 long-standing support for a two-state solution to Palestinian question
  • Suffering in Gaza prompted 海角直播 to intensify its efforts to 鈥榬estore normalcy, begin reconstruction, and enable the people to live in dignity in their land,鈥 he says

NEW YORK CITY: 海角直播 on Monday reaffirmed its long-standing support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as it called on the UN Security Council to take decisive action to end Israeli settlement activity, lift the blockade on Gaza, and protect holy sites in Jerusalem.

Speaking during a meeting of the council on the latest developments in the Middle East, 海角直播鈥檚 permanent representative to the UN, Abdulaziz Alwasil, said the Kingdom 鈥渞eiterates its firm position towards the Palestinian people and their just cause,鈥 and asked for renewed efforts to achieve a comprehensive and just peace.

鈥淢y country has been working for years to find a just and lasting solution to the Palestinian question,鈥 he said.

鈥淎s a result of the unprecedented suffering to which the Palestinian people have been subjected in the Gaza Strip, the Kingdom has intensified its efforts to restore normalcy, begin reconstruction, and enable the people to live in dignity in their land.鈥

He highlighted recent diplomatic initiatives by 海角直播, including the joint Saudi-French conference on the implementation of a two-state solution that took place at the UN in September, which resulted in the New York Declaration. The envoy said that declaration had encouraged several additional countries to officially recognize the State of Palestine.

Alwasil also announced the launch of an Emergency Coalition for Financial Sustainability of the Palestinian Authority, a joint initiative by 海角直播 and several friendly countries to help address what he described as an 鈥渦nprecedented financial crisis.鈥

The fund, he said, 鈥渁ims to stabilize the financial condition of the Palestinian Authority and ensure its ability to govern, provide services and maintain security.鈥

The ambassador expressed his appreciation for mediation efforts by Qatar, Egypt and Turkiye, as well as the active role of the US president, Donald Trump, in the implementation of the first phase of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza and the creation of 鈥渁 comprehensive and just path towards peace.鈥

He said these efforts were critical to alleviate the suffering of Palestinians, secure a full Israeli withdrawal, and restore stability.

鈥淭he Kingdom condemns the Israeli Knesset鈥檚 preliminary approval of two bills that aim to impose Israeli sovereignty over the occupied West Bank and to legalize Israeli sovereignty over an illegal colonial settlement,鈥 Alwasil continued.

He reaffirmed 海角直播鈥檚 鈥渃omplete rejection of all settlement and expansionist violations adopted by the Israeli occupation authorities.鈥

He urged the Security Council to 鈥渁ssume its responsibility for the implementation of relevant resolutions鈥 to help 鈥渆nd settlement activity, lift the blockade on Gaza, ensure full protection of the holy sites in Al-Quds Al-Sharif, and prevent any unilateral actions aimed at altering the identity of Palestinian territory.鈥

Alwasil also asked council members to advance efforts to create an independent Palestinian state in line with international resolutions and the steps outlined in the New York Declaration.

鈥淭he Kingdom calls on this esteemed council to work towards the establishment of a Palestinian state in accordance with the relevant resolutions,鈥 he added.

UN staff member detained after Houthis raided offices in Sanaa, UN spokesperson says
  • Houthis confiscated communication equipment from UN offices
  • At least 59 UN personnel are being held by Houthis

Another United Nations staff member has been detained in Yemen, bringing the number of the world body鈥檚 employees apprehended in recent days to six, a UN spokesperson said on Monday.
The latest detention came after Houthi security forces entered several United Nations offices in Sanaa, Yemen, on Sunday, said Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN secretary general.
He added that the Houthis confiscated IT and communication equipment and assets.
At least 59 UN personnel are being held by Houthis, according to Dujarric, who condemned the continued detentions. Some have been held for years, the UN said.
There are hundreds of UN personnel remaining in parts of Houthi-controlled Yemen, including a small number of international staff, said Farhan Haq, deputy spokesperson for the UN secretary general.
鈥淥ur immediate priority is the safety and well-being of all UN personnel, including securing the release of colleagues who have been arbitrarily detained and those of our local partners who have also been affected, and prevent further detentions,鈥 Haq said.
The Iran-aligned Houthis have controlled most of Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, since seizing power in 2014 and early 2015.
According to the UN, Houthis have taken steps that have made it 鈥渋ncreasingly difficult鈥 for the agency to provide assistance to those in need in Yemen.
Hajj said last week that the Houthis鈥 actions are forcing the UN to reassess how it works in areas controlled by the group.

UN, France slam Israel after attack on UN peacekeepers in Lebanon
  • UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric: 鈥極ur colleagues at UNIFIL are in touch with the IDF to protest vehemently what has happened鈥
  • Dujarric: 鈥業t鈥檚 not the first time that we feel we鈥檝e been targeted in different ways by the IDF (including) pointing lasers or warning shots鈥

JERUSALEM: The United Nations and France on Monday condemned Israeli fire near UN peacekeeping troops in southern Lebanon, after an incident during which peacekeepers neutralized an Israeli reconnaissance drone.
鈥淲e are very concerned about the incident that occurred on Sunday in which an Israeli drone dropped a grenade in the vicinity of a UNIFIL patrol, and subsequently an Israeli tank fired a shot at the peacekeepers in Kfar Kila in the UNIFIL area of operations,鈥 said UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric, referring to the incident in southern Lebanon.
鈥淥ur colleagues at UNIFIL are in touch with the IDF to protest vehemently what has happened. It鈥檚 not the first time that we feel we鈥檝e been targeted in different ways by the IDF (including) pointing lasers or warning shots. It鈥檚 very, very dangerous,鈥 he said.
The UN peacekeeping force known as UNIFIL works with the Lebanese army to enforce the ceasefire agreement that ended more than a year of conflict between Iran-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah and Israel.
According to a French diplomatic source, the UNIFIL troops involved in Sunday鈥檚 incident were French.
鈥淔rance condemns the Israeli fire that targeted a UNIFIL detachment on October 26, 2025,鈥 the French foreign ministry said in a separate statement.
It said that 鈥渢hese incidents follow those observed on October 1, 2, and 11, when the Israeli army had already targeted UNIFIL positions.鈥
On Sunday, UNIFIL said an Israeli drone flew over its patrol in an 鈥渁ggressive manner.鈥
鈥淭he peacekeepers applied necessary defensive countermeasures to neutralize the drone,鈥 it said in a statement.
The incident 鈥渟hows disregard for safety and security of the peacekeepers implementing Security Council mandated tasks in southern Lebanon,鈥 it said.
UNIFIL later said another Israeli drone came close to its patrol operating near Kfar Kila and dropped a grenade.
鈥淢oments later, an Israeli tank fired a shot toward the peacekeepers. Fortunately, no injury or damage was caused to the UNIFIL peacekeepers and assets,鈥 the statement added.

Drone 鈥榙eliberately鈥 shot down

The Israeli army still occupies five positions in southern Lebanon, along the border with northern Israel, and despite the ceasefire continues to carry out strikes on Lebanese territory, claiming to target Hezbollah.
Israeli military spokesman Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani said on X earlier on Monday that 鈥渁n intelligence-gathering drone was downed in the area of Kfar Kila.鈥
鈥淎n initial inquiry suggests that UNIFIL forces stationed nearby deliberately fired at the drone and downed it. The drone鈥檚 activity did not pose a threat to UNIFIL forces,鈥 Shoshani wrote.
As part of last year鈥檚 ceasefire deal, Israeli troops were to withdraw from southern Lebanon and Hezbollah was to pull back north of the Litani River and dismantle any military infrastructure in the south.
According to the agreement, only the Lebanese army and UNIFIL are to be deployed in the south of the country.
Under US pressure and fearing an escalation of Israeli strikes, the Lebanese government has moved to begin disarming Hezbollah, a plan the movement and its allies oppose.
Despite the terms of the truce, Israel has kept troops deployed in five border points it deems strategic.
Israel has also intensified strikes in recent weeks, with several deadly attacks launched over the past few days.

Jailed leader Marwan Barghouti can unify Palestinians, says son
  • 鈥淗e鈥檚 capable and has the track record to unify the Palestinian people,鈥 Arab Barghouti said in an interview on Sunday

RAMALLAH: Jailed Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti鈥檚 son urged US President Donald Trump to 鈥渟eize the opportunity鈥 created by the Gaza truce to secure his father鈥檚 release and revive the two-state solution to the Middle East conflict.

Sometimes dubbed the 鈥淢andela of Palestine鈥 by his supporters, Marwan Barghouti, 66, was one of the leaders of the second intifada, the Palestinian uprising in the early 2000s.

In June 2004, an Israeli court sentenced him to five life sentences after finding him guilty of involvement in four anti-Israeli attacks.

But the heavy sentences have not diminished his popularity among Palestinians.

鈥淗e鈥檚 capable and has the track record to unify the Palestinian people,鈥 Arab Barghouti said in an interview on Sunday in English in the Israeli-occupied West Bank city of Ramallah.

鈥淪omeone like him represents a great opportunity for the international community to prove that they are serious about supporting the two-state solution.鈥

Arab Barghouti鈥檚 comments come after several countries 鈥 including France, Britain and Canada 鈥 formally recognized a Palestinian state last month.

He is the second member of the family to appeal to the US president to secure his father鈥檚 release. Earlier this month, Marwan Barghouti鈥檚 wife Fadwa also urged Trump to intervene.

Trump said in an interview with US magazine Time on October 15 that he would be 鈥渕aking a decision鈥 on the matter, without specifying a timeline.

鈥淚 really hope he can do that, pressure the Israelis into releasing my father, because he is a partner for peace,鈥 Arab Barghouti said, adding that his family 鈥渞eally welcome鈥 Trump鈥檚 comment.

Though the two have not been allowed to speak in three years, Arab Barghouti said his father represents Palestinian unity and the best chance for a two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians.

A longtime member of Abbas鈥 Fatah party, Marwan Barghouti has consistently been re-elected to the party鈥檚 central committee, including twice while in jail.

With his likeness painted on many walls in the occupied West Bank and, until recently, in Gaza, Marwan Barghouti is considered one of the few figures who could be accepted as a leader by all Palestinian political factions, including Hamas.

UN pleads for safe exit for Sudanese civilians trapped in El-Fasher amid escalating conflict
  • Organization鈥檚 resident coordinator in Sudan says civilians who manage to get out of besieged Sudanese city are 鈥榙ehydrated, malnourished, injured and traumatized鈥
  • UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres calls on countries providing weapons to warring military factions to stop

NEW YORK CITY: The UN on Monday urged warring military faction the Rapid Support Forces to allow civilians in Sudan to flee the besieged city of El-Fasher, and to grant safe passage for humanitarian aid. Intensified fighting has left thousands trapped in life-threatening conditions, it warned.

Denise Brown, the UN鈥檚 resident and humanitarian coordinator in Sudan, said the UN had received 鈥渕ultiple reports of intensification of fighting in El-Fasher鈥 over the past 24 hours, though she could not confirm claims that the RSF had taken full control of the city.

鈥淭he RSF needs to demonstrate respect for international humanitarian law and let those people leave. Alternatively, they need to let us in,鈥 she added.

Several hundred people arrived on Sunday near Tawila, a humanitarian hub about 50 kilometers west of El-Fasher, after a perilous journey marked by militia roadblocks and ransom demands, Brown said. Many were dehydrated, malnourished, injured and traumatized.

鈥淐ivilians remain in El-Fasher and continue to try to flee but the roads they are taking are unsafe,鈥 she added. 鈥淭hose who arrive are deeply affected not only by that journey but also by the conditions inside El-Fasher.鈥

The city, which has been under blockade for more than 500 days, is cut off from humanitarian assistance. Brown said the UN鈥檚 Human Rights Office has received 鈥渁 multitude of reports of summary executions of unarmed men and civilians in El-Fasher,鈥 and the intensified fighting dramatically increases the risks to those who remain trapped there.

More than 128 humanitarian workers have been killed in Sudan since the civil war began in April 2023, according to the UN. Brown said access has repeatedly been denied for aid convoys, and local humanitarian volunteers have been killed in El-Fasher in recent days.

She described the situation as 鈥渦gly,鈥 citing patterns of sexual violence, including rape, sexual slavery and torture, largely attributed to the RSF in Darfur.

鈥淭he blockade of humanitarian assistance, and food aid in particular, is tantamount to using starvation as a weapon of war,鈥 she added.

The UN鈥檚 response is severely hampered by funding shortfalls, Brown warned, with only 27 percent of the required amount received so far this year.

鈥淭he humanitarian response is not a solution to this situation; a political solution absolutely needs to be found,鈥 she added.

She also expressed concern about renewed fighting in the Kordofan region, where a large UN aid convoy is attempting to reach civilians caught up in clashes around the town of Barah.

鈥淣one of this is good news,鈥 Brown said. 鈥淭he humanitarian community is doing its utmost to prevent further suffering, but we require guarantees of safe passage to do our work.鈥

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described reports of the capture of El-Fasher by the RSF as marking 鈥渁 terrible escalation of the conflict.鈥 He stressed that it was 鈥渉igh time for the international community to speak clearly to all countries interfering in the war and providing weapons to the warring parties,鈥 and urge them to stop.

Stephane Dujarric, the secretary-general鈥檚 spokesperson, said Guterres believes 鈥渢he problem is not only the fighting between the army and the RSF, but also the growing external interference that undermines prospects for a ceasefire and a political solution.鈥

Israel army says Red Cross received hostage coffin in Gaza

Israel army says Red Cross received hostage coffin in Gaza
  • Hamas armed wing said it recovered the body of a deceased hostage on Monday evening
  • So far, Hamas has returned the remains of 16 of the 28 deceased hostages since ceasefire took effect on Oct. 10

JERUSALEM: The Israeli military said Monday that the Red Cross had received a coffin containing the remains of a hostage held in Gaza, as part of a ceasefire deal.
鈥淎ccording to information provided by the Red Cross, a coffin of a deceased hostage has been transferred into its custody and is on the way to IDF troops in the Gaza Strip,鈥 the military said.
An informed source in Hamas confirmed the information to AFP. 鈥淭he body of an Israeli captive that was recovered today in the Gaza Strip has been handed over to the Red Cross,鈥 the source said.
A joint team of Red Cross, Egyptian rescue services and a Hamas member was searching for the remains of hostages demanded by Israel, an Israeli government official said.
Hamas has so far returned the remains of 16 of the 28 deceased hostages since a US-brokered ceasefire took effect on October 10.
It has also freed all 20 surviving hostages as part of the truce deal.
An Israeli group campaigning for the return of all hostages has urged the Israeli government to suspend the truce unless Hamas releases all remaining bodies.
Search for bodies

During their October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, Hamas militants took 251 people hostage, most had been released, rescued or recovered before this month鈥檚 ceasefire.
The attack itself resulted in the deaths of 1,221 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.
Israel鈥檚 subsequent assault on Gaza killed at least 68,527 people, according to figures from the territory鈥檚 health ministry that the UN considers reliable.
Hamas says it is committed to the ceasefire and insists it is trying to return all the remaining bodies but that the search has been hampered by the destruction wrought on Gaza during the war.
In a statement to media on Saturday, lead Hamas negotiator Khalil Al-Hayya said: 鈥淭here are challenges in locating the bodies of Israeli captives because the occupation has altered the terrain of Gaza.
鈥淢oreover, some of those who buried the bodies have been martyred or no longer remember where they buried them.鈥
In the past two days, Egypt has sent recovery crews and heavy earth-moving equipment into Gaza, with Israeli approval, to help with the recovery operation.
Israeli spokeswoman Shosh Bedrosian said a team of Red Cross staff, Egyptian rescuers and a Hamas member were searching for bodies and had been allowed to cross the so-called Yellow Line into the area of Gaza controlled by Israeli forces.
鈥淭he Red Cross, the Egyptian technical team, and a Hamas person have been permitted to enter beyond the Yellow Line position in Gaza under close (Israeli army) supervision to identify the location of our hostages,鈥 Bedrosian told journalists.
A Red Cross spokesperson also confirmed it was part of the search team.

Opposition to Turkiye

No firm timescale has been put on the next stages of the Gaza truce plan, but US President Donald Trump鈥檚 administration is working to set up an international security force with troops from Arab and Muslim nations to police the truce.
Israel has voiced strong opposition to Turkiye鈥檚 participation in the proposed security force.
At a news conference in Budapest, Israeli foreign minister Gideon Saar said Turkiye under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had 鈥渓ed a hostile approach against Israel, that included not only hostile statements, but also diplomatic and economic measures against Israel.鈥
鈥淪o it is not reasonable for us to let their armed forces enter the Gaza Strip, and we will not agree to that, and we said it to our American friends,鈥 he added.
The US military has also set up a coordination center in southern Israel to monitor the ceasefire and to coordinate aid and reconstruction, but aid agencies are pushing for greater access for humanitarian convoys inside Gaza.
Israel has withdrawn its forces from Gaza鈥檚 main cities, but still controls around half of the territory from positions on the Yellow Line, and has resisted calls to allow aid through the Rafah border crossing with Egypt.
Defense Minister Israel Katz, meanwhile, said Israel has lifted the state of emergency for areas near the border with Gaza for the first time since the October 2023 attack.
