  • Kane scored in the 22nd minute with a header to Joshua Kimmich’s corner
  • It mattered little, as Olize sealed the win by sliding in to cut out substitute Jobe Bellingham’s attempted goal-line clearance in the 79th

MUNICH: Harry Kane scored again as Bayern Munich dealt Borussia Dortmund their first Bundesliga loss of the season by winning Der Klassiker 2-1 on Saturday.
Bayern, the defending champion, dominated and delivered a statement to their closest rival after six rounds.
Kane launched the first good chance, while defending. He eluded two Dortmund forward, and sent the ball forward. Michael Olize drew a save from Gregor Kobel, who then secured Luis Díaz’s effort from the rebound.
Kane scored in the 22nd minute with a header to Joshua Kimmich’s corner. It was his 22nd goal for club and country this season and stretched his scoring streak in the Bundesliga to five games that have yielded nine goals.
Olize grazed the left post with another shot. The only complaint Bayern could have at the break was that they were leading only 1-0.
Dortmund improved significantly after the interval when Felix Nmecha went close, Serhou Guirassy fired over, and Karim Adeyemi failed to capitalize on a rare Kimmich mistake.
It mattered little, as Olize sealed the win by sliding in to cut out substitute Jobe Bellingham’s attempted goal-line clearance in the 79th. That move started with a brilliant cross-field ball from Kane for Díaz.
Substitute Julian Brandt scored seconds after his introduction, but Kane defended as Bayern held on for their 11th consecutive win across all competitions.
Poulsen honored
Leipzig held on beat promoted Hamburger SV 2-1 after the home fans honored Hamburg’s Danish forward Yussuf Poulsen with a huge tifo in tribute to his 12 years at the club in his first game back. Leipzig were still in the third division when Poulsen joined from Lyngby in 2013.
Heidenheim drew with Werder Bremen 2-2, Augsburg drew in Cologne 1-1, and Christian Eriksen made his first start for Wolfsburg in a 3-0 loss at home to Stuttgart. It was Wolfsburg’s fourth straight Bundesliga defeat and a sixth league game in a row without a win.

  • “When I got to the bench, I said that if I came on, I’d score. I work to help the team. I’m happy to do so,” said Uruguay international Araujo
  • The match began with players from both teams standing still for 15 seconds

BARCELONA: Substitute Ronald Araujo scored three minutes into added time as Barcelona secured a 2-1 win over a stubborn Girona in LaLiga on Saturday.
Champions Barcelona, who have 22 points after nine matches, sit top of the table, a point above Real Madrid, who have played a game fewer and face Getafe on Sunday. Girona are in the relegation zone, sitting 19th in the table with six points.
“Everyone knows I used to play as a striker. When the manager asked me, I didn’t hesitate. When I got to the bench, I said that if I came on, I’d score. I work to help the team. I’m happy to do so,” said Uruguay international Araujo.
The match began with players from both teams standing still for 15 seconds, as part of a protest organized by the Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE) over LaLiga’s decision to move December’s match between Villarreal and Barcelona to the United States.
Barcelona immediately went on the offensive, with probing through balls for Frenkie de Jong and Lamine Yamal, back after a two-week absence due to a groin injury, threatening from the right.
Barcelona took the lead in the 13th minute, when Pedri received Yamal’s quick ball into the box and ran across the defensive line before dispatching a low left-footed finish.
Yet Axel Witsel’s spectacular bicycle kick off Arnau Martinez’s header levelled for Girona seven minutes later, with the Belgian’s acrobatic effort bouncing over a diving Wojciech Szczesny.
Girona, who had barely threatened until Witsel’s equalizer, had Barcelona briefly on the ropes, with Szczesny’s save denying Vladyslav Vanat and Portu hitting the post.
But Barcelona regained control before the half-hour mark, with Girona keeper Paulo Gazzaniga keeping out De Jong’s shot, while Marcus Rashford’s free kick rattled the crossbar.
Girona then countered through Vitor Reis, whose lofted ball sent Bryan Gil running through the hosts’ high defensive line. The former Tottenham Hotspur winger only had the keeper to beat, but ended up shooting over the bar in the 39th minute.
The visitors’ Alex Moreno shot just wide of the far post two minutes later, as both sides went into the break on equal terms, having had three shots on target despite Barcelona dominating possession.

BARCELONA DOMINATE SECOND HALF
Barcelona pushed hard when the match resumed, with five shots on target in the first 30 minutes of the second half.
The hosts’ halftime substitute Fermin Lopez hit the post seven minutes after coming on and Pau Cubarsi found the net on the hour mark but his effort was disallowed due to Eric Garcia’s foul on Hugo Rincon in the build-up.
Viktor Tsyhankov had the chance to score a second for Girona in the 87th minute, but his shot off Yaser Asprilla’s pass was weak.
Girona faced heartbreak six minutes later as Araujo, who came on in the 82nd minute, sealed the win for Barcelona, finding the net from De Jong’s cross with his right foot.
“I’m happy with how the team competed, with the feeling we had. We are leaving with a very hard blow... in those final minutes, we defended poorly,” Girona coach Michel said. Barcelona host Olympiacos in the Champions League on Tuesday, before continuing their LaLiga campaign at Real Madrid next Sunday.

  • Riyadh club climb to second on the table after reigning champions Ittihad stumble the previous day

RIYADH: Visitors Al-Hilal defeated Al-Ettifaq in Dammam on Saturday afternoon to climb to second in the Saudi Pro League table as domestic football returns to the Kingdom following a week that saw the national team qualify to the 2026 World Cup.

The 5-0 win reestablished Al-Hilal’s title pretensions and left them on 11 points from five matches. Al-Ettifaq remain in 10th with seven points from the same number of fixtures.

Marco Leonardo opened the scoring after only 15 minutes, finishing past Marek Rodak after some poor defending from the Ettifaq defenders following Al-Hilal rightback Hamad Al-Yami’s cross from the byline.

The lead was doubled on 39 minutes when Sergej Milinkovic-Savic disposed Duda in the middle of the park and found Malcolm and the right wing. The Brazilian in turn squared a simple pass to Darwin Nunez to score from close range. On the sideline Simone Inzaghi applauded another fine team goal.

While the home team attempted to reduce the deficit before the break with a concerted period of pressure, it was Al-Hilal who continued to look the more dangerous on the break. The first half would see no further goals.

If Al-Hilal had been the more threatening team in the first half, they were brutally dominant in the early stages of the second.

Ruben Neves made it 3-0 from the penalty spot in the 48th minute to end the match as a contest before the home team had any chance of making a belated impression on it.

Only seven minutes later, a free kick from Neves was nodded by the tireless Nunez toward Leonardo, who made it four with a close range-header.

The ordeal for Al-Ettifaq was not over. On 74 minutes, Milinkovic-Savic’s inch-perfect cross from the right was met at the near post by Nunez for his second and Al-Hilal’s fifth of the night.

Al-Hilal next welcome Qatar’s Al-Sadd to Riyadh in the AFC Champions League Elite, before traveling to Jeddah for a Saudi Pro League clash with reigning champions Al-Ittihad.

Welbeck brace gives Brighton 2-1 win over Newcastle
  • Newcastle came into the game having failed to score in any of their away league games so far
  • The win lifted Brighton above Newcastle and into ninth place on 12 points

BRIGHTON, England: Danny Welbeck scored late in each half to hand Brighton & Hove Albion a 2-1 Premier League win over Newcastle United on Saturday as the 34-year-old rolled back the years with a vintage display of finishing.
Newcastle came into the game having failed to score in any of their away league games so far this season and fell behind when Welbeck put the home side ahead in the 41st minute, latching onto a Georginio Rutter pass and dinking home a beautiful finish.
Brighton almost doubled their lead in the 50th minute as Yankuba Minteh broke down the right and played the ball into the middle, but Yasin Ayari’s attempt was deflected behind for a corner.
Having made two changes at halftime, Newcastle burst into life, but despite plenty of possession in dangerous areas, they continued to struggle to get efforts on target.
They finally got the equalizer in the 76th minute as big summer signing Nick Woltemade scored with a brilliant flicked back-heel from Lewis Miley’s center.
However, Welbeck had other ideas and came to his side’s rescue again, snapping up a loose ball and flashing a shot across Nick Pope and into the Newcastle net in the 84th minute to put his side back in front.
The visitors continued to pour forward but Dan Burn, Woltemade and Harvey Barnes were all unable to convert late chances for Newcastle as the Seagulls held on to win.
The win lifted Brighton above Newcastle and into ninth place on 12 points, while their visitors slipped to 12th in the standings on nine points from eight games.
“It was a very good win and it was very important for us. We’ve had some results where we’ve been pushing and not quite got there,” Welbeck said.
“We’ve been ahead here at home and have not got the three points. It was a test of our character today.”
Substituted late on, Welbeck shrugged off talk of his age and said he would keep going.
“I love it. I have the passion and love for football. It’s what I want to do. I feel good. I feel strong and fit so I won’t be stopping soon,” he said.
With four goals in five Premier League appearances, Woltemade’s arrival at Newcastle has given them a huge boost in the wake of the acrimonious departure of Alexander Isak to Liverpool, even if they did come up short against Brighton.
“The second half, there was good energy in the game. We scored one goal and it felt like we would win but they played good and scored. That’s football sometimes,” Woltemade said.

Haaland leads Man City to win over Everton with second-half double
  • The 25-year-old Haaland broke the deadlock in the 58th minute
  • The Norwegian doubled City’s lead five minutes later

MANCHESTER: Manchester City’s Erling Haaland kept up his torrid scoring pace with two goals in five second-half minutes on Saturday to lift City provisionally top of the table with a 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton.
Pep Guardiola’s men have 16 points after eight games, before Arsenal and Liverpool, now second and third respectively, play their games this weekend. Everton dropped to 10th on 11 points.
The 25-year-old Haaland — who scored in an 11th consecutive game for club and country for a season total of 23 goals — broke the deadlock in the 58th minute when he leapt to head home Nico O’Reilly’s cross from the left.
The Norwegian doubled City’s lead five minutes later when he latched onto Savinho’s cross and struck a blistering left-foot shot from the middle of the box that was slightly deflected by Everton’s James Tarkowski past goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
Haaland was hungry to complete a hat-trick, with three brilliant chances in the dying minutes, with Pickford racing out to save two of them with his legs. Haaland took the ball around Pickford on the third, but his looping shot from an impossibly tight angle dropped wide of the net.
Haaland shook his head in frustration, while the crowd chanted “Haaland! Haaland!” for his efforts.
City’s Phil Foden hailed Haaland for breaking the deadlock, calling the moment “very important.”
“We know he’s got that quality to time his runs to perfection and be in the right position. If they mark him out of the game he is still capable of scoring and we know he only needs one chance to score.
“He remained very patient, there wasn’t a lot of space for him today. And as you can see he is always there for us at the right times, that is the sign of a world class striker.”
There was no emotional homecoming for Everton winger Jack Grealish, who was ineligible to face his parent club. A TV camera showed Grealish at the game, but the absence of the league’s joint assist leader was a gaping hole for David Moyes’ team.
City, who thoroughly dominated in the second half, had 19 shots to Everton’s five, and seven on target to the visitors’ one.
Everton squandered a handful of chances. Early in the game Iliman Ndiaye raced down the right side before sending a cross to Beto who slid to just get his foot on the ball but poked it wide.
City keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma tipped a long shot from Ndiaye over the bar later in the first half.

  • Leverkusen moved up to 14 points in fifth place with their third straight league win
  • Spain international Grimaldo opened their account with an 11th-minute penalty

BERLIN: Bayer Leverkusen’s Alejandro Grimaldo scored twice in the first half to guide them to a 4-3 victory in a thrilling clash at Mainz 05 on Saturday, stretching their record unbeaten run on the road in the Bundesliga.
Leverkusen, who host European champions Paris St. Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday, moved up to 14 points in fifth place with their third straight league win while also extending their unbeaten league record to 37 consecutive away matches.
Spain international Grimaldo opened their account with an 11th-minute penalty before teenager Christian Kofane doubled the lead 13 minutes later, capping off a dominant opening spell.
Mainz briefly cut the deficit through Lee Jane-sung in the 34th but Grimaldo punished the hosts for two consecutive defensive errors in first-half stoppage time to slot in and restore their two-goal cushion.
In a topsy-turvy second half the hosts hit the post and earned a 71st minute penalty, with Nadiem Amiri putting them back in the game from the spot, but the visitors struck again with Martin Terrier slotting in from seven meters in the 87th.
Mainz still had time to score another goal — in the 90th minute through Armindo Sieb — but could not find the equalizer in 10 minutes of added time.
Despite scoring their first goals in a home game this season, Mainz, stuck in 16th, have now failed to win at home for a ninth straight league game, equalling the club’s record for the longest stretch without a victory at their ground.
