Michelin Guide鈥檚 Gwendal Poullennec talks Saudi culinary scene ahead of local launch

DUBAI:聽Wednesday marks the launch of the Michelin Guide in 海角直播 with the first clutch of restaurants to be revealed聽in a three-part rollout that includes Nov. 15 and Dec. 15.

The moment marks a major milestone in the Kingdom鈥檚 evolving culinary landscape.

Gwendal Poullennec, international director of the Michelin Guide, spoke to Arab News in Paris last week about the future of 海角直播鈥檚 food scene.

鈥淲hen we are talking about Saudi, we still have to consider that it鈥檚 an emerging both gastronomic and hospitality destination 鈥 when we look at other destinations that are a bit more mature, the second step 鈥 I wish will one day happen in the future 鈥 is to see more independently run and smaller properties blossom.

鈥淭ypically that鈥檚 part of the trajectory when you see the emergence of a culinary scene,鈥 he added.

At the time of writing, the first wave of restaurants recognized by Michelin has yet to be announced, with critics left wondering what the ratio of homegrown concepts to international imports will be.

Organized in partnership with the Culinary Arts Commission, a subsidiary of 海角直播鈥檚 Ministry of Culture, the new selection will focus on Riyadh and Jeddah.

It will also begin to explore the diverse regions of the Kingdom, including Alkhobar and AlUla 鈥 indicating there will be plenty of opportunities for Saudi-born concepts to shine during the phased announcements.

One Michelin star is awarded to restaurants for 鈥渉igh-quality cooking that is worth a stop,鈥 two stars for 鈥渆xcellent cooking that is worth a detour,鈥 and three stars for 鈥渆xceptional cuisine that is worth a special journey.鈥

Alongside the coveted star ratings, the selection also includes the popular Bib Gourmand category, a distinction awarded to restaurants that provide good quality food at a moderate price.

Poullennec also touched on the Michelin Guide鈥檚 role in encouraging international tourism, whether it be the restaurant guide or the newly expanded Michelin Keys guide that focuses on hotel properties around the world.

With seven hotels in 海角直播 earning Michelin Keys at last week鈥檚 ceremony in Paris, 海角直播 is fast becoming a market for discerning travelers.

鈥淕astronomy is sometimes the main hook, but people are looking for authentic places to stay and especially the new generations,鈥 Poullennec said.

Looking inwards, there is a keen focus at Michelin on ensuring the restaurant guide mirrors local tastes.

With the famously anonymous inspectors representing more than 30 nationalities, there seems to be an effort to ensure different culturally-informed taste palettes are accounted for in the selection process.

It is part of the reason Poullennec believes the guide has succeeded internationally, beyond the traditional Western parameters and taste buds.

The Michelin Guide first went beyond those borders with its launch in Japan in 2007, popular with Japanese locals themselves according to Poullennec because 鈥渋t was a true reflection of what they believe is the soul of Japanese food.鈥

鈥(It was a) way to rediscover their own culture, fostering a real sense of pride because all the countries and all the cultures are very proud about their own culinary culture and heritage 鈥 and for me, for Saudi, the recipe is the same.

鈥淚f we would like to deserve the trust, regardless who we are, of course we are legitimate but being legitimate is not enough, you have to be relevant to be able to talk to the local people to make sure that all selection makes sense, that you have not only international outlets, but 鈥 real local, authentic flavors.鈥

鈥淎nd for me, that is the key for success, it all starts with the quality of the curation itself.鈥

Saudi film 鈥楬ijra鈥 submitted to represent Kingdom at Oscars
  • Story of women navigating identity, says director Shahad Ameen
  • Shot against backdrop of the Hajj, in 8 Saudi cities over 55 days

RIYADH: The Saudi Film Commission has chosen 鈥淗ijra鈥 to represent the Kingdom at next year鈥檚 98th Academy Awards.

The movie has been selected for the Best International Feature Film category at the Oscars, which will be held in Los Angeles in March 2026, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Monday.

Chosen by a committee of prominent 海角直播 filmmakers and industry specialists, the movie will compete against dozens of submissions from around the world.

The academy鈥檚 shortlist is announced after several stages, the SPA reported.

Released in August at the Venice International Film Festival, the movie is an exploration of female identity across generations.

The feature follows a grandmother, Khairiya Nazmi, and her granddaughter, Lamar Feddan, as they journey across northern 海角直播 to find a missing teenage girl.

Shot over more than 55 days in eight Saudi cities 鈥 Taif, Jeddah, Madinah, Wadi Al-Faraa, AlUla, Tabuk, Neom and Duba 鈥 the story unfolds against the backdrop of the Hajj.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a story of women navigating who they are, and understanding what freedom means to them,鈥 director Shahad Ameen told Arab News in September.

The film won the NETPAC Award for Best Asian Film last month.

Ameen鈥檚 2019 release, 鈥淪cales,鈥 was chosen as 海角直播鈥檚 submission for the 93rd Academy Awards in 2021.

鈥淲here 鈥楽cales鈥 was mythic, 鈥楬ijra鈥 is more intimate. It鈥檚 about the pilgrimage we make toward ourselves, and the cost of that journey,鈥 Ameen said.

海角直播鈥檚 participation in the Oscars reflects its continued commitment to sharing its unique stories with global audiences, the SPA reported.

The Saudi Film Commission, since its creation in 2020 by the Culture Ministry, has played a significant role in developing the Kingdom鈥檚 movie industry.

A recent report by the commission showed its national incentive programs supported 64 projects, generating more than $288 million in local spending.

In 2024, more than 17.5 million cinema tickets were sold across the Kingdom, with infrastructure expanding to 64 locations and 630 screens.

There are now 65 production companies, and 14 projects received additional support through incentive programs. Total production spending on supported films amounted to just over SR93 million.

Festivals and events also saw strong engagement, with more than 75,600 participants attending the Red Sea International Film Festival, the Saudi Film Festival, and the Gulf Cinema Festival.

How Cairo Design Week is taking Arab design to the world stage

DUBAI: As the global design community turns its eyes to Cairo this November, the Egyptian capital is preparing to host the third edition of Cairo Design Week, a platform that highlights the region鈥檚 creativity, heritage and innovation.

At the heart of the movement is designer Hisham Mahdy, who founded the event in 2022 after decades in the design industry.

鈥淥ver 25 years, my design vision evolved with Egypt; from decoration and function to a language shaping culture, identity and the future,鈥 he told Arab News. 鈥淚 shifted from solo projects to building an ecosystem that nurtures talent, connects creatives, and bridges heritage with innovation.鈥

Before Cairo Design Week came the Cairo Design Award, launched in 2017 to recognize Egypt鈥檚 growing creative community.

鈥淲e had talent but no platform to showcase it, so I launched the Cairo Design Award as a statement that design matters,鈥 Mahdy said. 鈥淐DA became a space for creatives to connect and be seen. But it needed a bigger stage 鈥 one that brought design into public life. That鈥檚 how Cairo Design Week was born.鈥

Now entering its third year, the event continues to expand across Cairo鈥檚 districts, activating heritage sites and building stronger global collaborations.

鈥淭he first edition tested the waters; the second proved its staying power. Now we鈥檝e expanded into new districts, activated more heritage sites, and deepened collaborations,鈥 Mahdy said. 鈥淐DW is no longer just an event; it鈥檚 becoming a movement.鈥

This year鈥檚 edition will feature exhibitions, fashion shows, installations and talks under the theme 鈥淒esign, So I Can See You,鈥 inspired by the Greek philosopher Socrates.

鈥淔or us, Arab identity isn鈥檛 something to be preserved behind glass 鈥 it鈥檚 living and evolving,鈥 Mahdy said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e not imitating global trends. We鈥檙e contributing to them from our own cultural lens."

Palestinian Jordanian artist Zeyne gears up for album release

DUBAI: Palestinian Jordanian artist Zeyne is gearing up for the release of her album 鈥淎wda鈥 on Oct. 16.

The singer shared the track list, including 13 songs, and also took to Instagram this week to share behind-the-scenes photographs from a recent performance in 海角直播鈥檚 AlUla.

Saudi label MDLBEAST this week revealed that the artist鈥檚 music has been submitted for consideration in four categories at next year鈥檚 Grammy Awards.

The record label submitted the songs 鈥淎sli Ana鈥 and 鈥淗ilwa鈥 for the Best Global Music Performance award and the Best Music Video award.

Zeyne鈥檚 most recent single 鈥淗ilwa鈥 dropped in July and the artwork 鈥 shot by Zaid Allozi 鈥 shows three women interlocked by their braided hair.

鈥淭he image shows three generations 鈥 me, my mother and my grandmother 鈥 all connected by one continuous braid. It鈥檚 a symbol of inheritance; the quiet strength and love passed from one woman to the next,鈥 Zeyne told Arab News at the time of the release.鈥淭he braid holds the kind of love that isn鈥檛 always spoken, but is deeply felt and remembered.鈥

Following Zeyne鈥檚 2024 hit 鈥淎sli Ana,鈥 which reimagined Arab rhythmic traditions through a futuristic lens, 鈥淗ilwa鈥 pays homage to her mother and grandmother, whose love and wisdom deeply shaped her sense of identity. 鈥淲hile 鈥楢sli Ana鈥 was about resistance, 鈥楬ilwa鈥 is softer,鈥 she said.鈥

Born Zein Sajdi in Amman in 1997, Zeyne was raised in a household where music and culture were key. Her father was a record collector, her mother led a dabke troupe and her sister trained as a classical pianist. Zeyne began performing aged five and was already writing her own lyrics in her teens.

Since the release of her 2021 debut single, 鈥淢inni Ana,鈥 Zeyne has carved a singular lane in Arab pop 鈥 merging traditional Arabic sounds with modern, genre-defying production.

Earlier this year, she launched a three-stop regional mini tour, 鈥淭he Golden-Hour Run,鈥 that included a landmark performance at the OffLimits Festival in the UAE and stadium appearances as a special guest on Ed Sheeran鈥檚 Mathematics Tour in Qatar and Bahrain, where she performed to more than 65,000 people.鈥

She became the first female artist from the Levant to appear on the globally renowned music platform COLORS with her song 鈥淢a Bansak,鈥 and a viral performance in collaboration with Bottega Veneta blurred the lines between fashion, music and Palestinian resistance.
