The smart pilgrim鈥檚 suitcase: What Saudis are packing for Hajj

The smart pilgrim鈥檚 suitcase: What Saudis are packing for Hajj
  • Tech gadgets find their way to the holy cities alongside traditional garments
  • Modern pilgrims pack for comfort as well as reverence and spiritual intent聽

RIYADH: As Hajj season approaches, pilgrims throughout 海角直播 are making lists, checking supplies, and organizing their thoughts for what many consider the most significant journey of their lives.

Alongside the spiritual preparations, pilgrims are packing Hajj suitcases with the traditional white garments and hygiene essentials as well as more personalized, thoughtful and even high-tech items.

From prayer lists and handwritten dua cards to smartwatches, earbuds, and journal notebooks, the modern pilgrim approaches Hajj not only with reverence but with intent, structure, and a little comfort.

For many, this approach reflects how deeply Hajj is embedded into the personal identity and emotional world of the pilgrim.

Arab News spoke with a few people who have previously completed Hajj to get an idea of what it is like to prepare for the pilgrimage.

鈥淚 packed my journal because I felt this experience deserved to be documented in detail,鈥 Shatha Al-Jadaan, 25, told Arab News. 鈥淚 also included my daily skincare products, easy-access snacks, and drip coffee sachets 鈥 lifesaver,鈥 she added.

The contents of Al-Jadaan鈥檚 suitcase told the story of a young woman approaching Hajj with equal parts practicality and reflection.

Her essentials included headphones, a smartwatch and a hair dryer 鈥 items she considered necessary after each of the physically demanding rituals.

For her, the process of preparation brought a deep sense of meaning.

鈥淲hat struck me the most was the realization that this journey is unlike any other,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he version of me leaving home is not the same one returning.

鈥淭hat thought hit me hardest when I was writing prayer lists for loved ones. People sent very specific prayers, personal hopes and goals. I even made a separate list so I wouldn鈥檛 forget anyone, including myself.鈥

Some pilgrims take a simpler approach. For Ethar Abdulrahman, 22, the focus was on utility and peace of mind.

鈥淢y essentials were a toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, deodorant, underclothes, outerwear, hair ties and wet wipes,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nd I only brought my personal phone 鈥 just to stay in touch with my family.鈥

What made her preparation emotional was the fact that it was her first Hajj 鈥 and at a young age.

鈥淭he idea that I was going on Hajj for the first time and at such a young age was emotional on its own. Packing my personal items and bringing prayer books made it even more special.鈥

She also relied heavily on advice from seasoned pilgrims: 鈥淏ring Panadol, fever reducers, painkillers, and muscle relief cream. That advice helped me a lot.鈥

Her words reflect the layered purpose of each item: some for health, some for spiritual focus, and some simply for emotional safety.

Al-Jadaan echoed the sentiment. 鈥淎 lot of people told me to only wear cotton and make sure my shoes were extremely comfortable. And it was the best advice I received.鈥

The overlap between generational wisdom and modern convenience shows how today鈥檚 pilgrims are combining tradition with adaptation.

For Mariam Al-Osaimi, 27, essential oils were a must. 鈥淚 brought lavender and peppermint oil. Lavender helped me sleep, and peppermint was great for energy. They became part of my daily Hajj routine 鈥 almost like a spiritual ritual.鈥

Others took folding prayer mats, lightweight Qur鈥檃n readers, and portable chargers 鈥 recognizing the role technology can play in navigating crowds, locating tents, or staying connected to family.

One of the more discreet but powerful changes to the modern Hajj experience is the seamless integration of digital tools. Most pilgrims now use digital Qur鈥檃n apps, prayer reminder apps, or even step counters to track their movement during the rites.

Abdulrahman Al-Ruwaili, 29, said his smartwatch was more than just a gadget. 鈥淚 set reminders for prayer times, prayers for each ritual, and even tracked my heart rate on the way to Jamarat,鈥 he said.

鈥淚t helped me stay focused, grounded, and aware of how my body was responding, in case of potential panic attack due to my medical condition.鈥

While some may frown at these modern additions, many people see them as useful companions in the demanding spiritual and physical journey.

海角直播 emerges as global AI leader in 6 years
  • Efforts led by Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority
  • Kingdom has 鈥榲isionary leadership,鈥 academic tells Arab News

RIYADH: The Kingdom has emerged as a global leader in data and artificial intelligence in just six years, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Wednesday.

The transformation has been spearheaded by the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority since its establishment in 2019.

The SDAIA has developed a strategic roadmap to enhance the Kingdom鈥檚 global competitiveness by leveraging data and AI to drive economic growth and develop human capabilities, the SPA reported.

鈥淎s the primary host of the Kingdom鈥檚 national data, the SDAIA is crucial for enabling digital transformation, providing insights for national decision-making, and building a robust digital infrastructure for integrated government services.鈥

The authority also prioritizes the responsible use of these technologies, creating regulatory frameworks that align with the Personal Data Protection Law to ensure privacy and ethical standards, the SPA reported.

Commenting on the transformation, Muhammad Khurram Khan, a professor of cybersecurity at King Saud University, told Arab News: 鈥満=侵辈モ檚 AI journey is a direct reflection of visionary leadership, strategic foresight, and an unwavering national commitment to technological sovereignty.

鈥淲ith the support of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Kingdom has positioned AI as a national priority, embedding it at the heart of its economic transformation and modernization agenda.鈥

鈥淭his top-level commitment has empowered 海角直播 to build world-class digital infrastructure, advance AI research and innovation, and lay the foundation for long-term self-reliance in advanced and disruptive technologies,鈥 Khan added.

The crown prince provides support for the SDAIA that has enabled the authority to achieve over 70 national and international awards and certifications, positioning the Kingdom at the forefront of global indicators.

鈥淭hrough institutions like SDAIA, the Kingdom is driving a comprehensive national AI strategy that spans policy development, capability building, ethical governance, and global collaboration,鈥 said Khan.

He added that the Kingdom鈥檚 AI leadership is evident through its hosting of global AI summits, and nationwide education initiatives.

海角直播 has also set up Public Investment Fund-backed AI entities including the company Humain, and committed to international standards through policies such as the Saudi AI Qualifications Framework, he said.

鈥淭hese efforts clearly demonstrate the Kingdom鈥檚 ambition to lead the global AI race," he added.

Khan said that equally critical was the Kingdom鈥檚 deep investment in human capital.

The SAMAI initiative, which aims to equip 1 million Saudis with AI skills, and the national integration of a curriculum for over 6 million students, represent strategic moves toward long-term self-reliance and talent-driven innovation, he said.

鈥淭his is more than a digital shift, it is a nation-scale re-engineering of how technology, talent, and trust are mobilized to shape the future.

鈥満=侵辈モ檚 AI strategy is deeply aligned with Vision 2030, ensuring that AI is not only a driver of economic diversification, but also a tool to elevate human potential, enhance public services, and secure a competitive edge in the global innovation landscape.鈥

鈥淏y embedding AI into its societal fabric and aligning every initiative with Vision 2030, 海角直播 is building a resilient, self-sufficient, and innovation-led economy that is poised to lead the world into the AI era,鈥 he added.

The SDAIA鈥檚 initiatives include organizing successful global summits since 2020, attracting over 100,000 participants, and leading to the establishment of the International Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Ethics, supervised by UNESCO.

In addition to its global efforts, the SDAIA has contributed significantly to domestic services. The authority鈥檚 cybersecurity standards earned it certification from the global CREST organization, making it the first government agency in the Middle East to do so.

The SDAIA has also digitized government services, notably through the Tawakkalna app, which serves over 34 million users with more than 1,000 services.

Furthermore, the SDAIA employs AI technologies to manage crowds and ensure safety during the Hajj and Umrah seasons.

The SDAIA鈥檚 projects have also yielded significant economic benefits.

The Estishraf platform has generated over SR51 billion ($13.5 billion) in savings for more than 121 government agencies, while the Ehsan platform has facilitated over SR12 billion in donations, the SPA has reported.

These achievements demonstrate the tangible impact of the SDAIA鈥檚 work in strengthening the national economy and enhancing government efficiency.

  • Global firms join Kingdom鈥檚 efforts to secure resources for growing population and industries
  • Tareq Al-Tamimi: In line with the Kingdom鈥檚 ambition, we also aspire to grow in both local and global markets

RIYADH: The Global Water Expo is being held from Sept. 2-4 at the Riyadh Front Exhibition and Conference Center, where experts are discussing industry challenges, opportunities, and policy changes.

The event features more than 300 local and international companies, including leading firms from Germany, China, Turkiye, and the US in the water treatment sector.

Visitors can explore solutions in water and desalination, drainage and sewage systems, water extraction and treatment, waste management, recycling, and the latest advancements in environmental protection.

Among the participants is Tareq Al-Tamimi, founder and owner of SAS RTL, who spoke to Arab News about the company and its goals.

鈥淐ommercially, we want to showcase our facility to suppliers and consumers. In line with the Kingdom鈥檚 ambition, we also aspire to grow in both local and global markets.鈥

SAS RTL, based in Madinah, began operations in 2021 after the COVID-19 pandemic, specializing in water systems, including desalination plants and sewage systems.

Water plays a critical role in 海角直播鈥檚 economic progress and the well-being of its population. Due to the Kingdom鈥檚 scarce natural water resources, the government is making major investments to meet the needs of a fast-growing population, sustain expanding industries, and secure water for agriculture.

海角直播 is home to the world鈥檚 largest desalination plant. With its focus on sustainable development, the Kingdom is attracting international companies specializing in desalination and water solutions to present their technologies at the Global Water Expo.

Based in San Diego, California, Energy Recovery 鈥 a 20-year-old American leader in energy efficiency technology 鈥 is among the international companies at the expo.

The company develops innovations for desalination and energy, including recovery devices that cut energy consumption in seawater desalination plants.

Imad Al-Sharif, vice president of sales and business development at Energy Recovery, told Arab News: 鈥淥ur product works in seawater desalination plants using reverse osmosis. It produces two components: desalinated water and wastewater.鈥

He added: 鈥淭he desalinated water is reused, while the wastewater is purified and returned to the sea. Its unique advantage is the high energy content 鈥 instead of wasting it, we capture the mechanical energy for the plant鈥檚 benefit. About 60 percent of the energy is recovered and reused.鈥

The expo runs from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., welcoming visitors, investors, and business owners to showcase technologies and exchange knowledge on water and sustainable practices.
