  • Group of five had no sailing experience before training for 7,400 km journey
  • Pilgrimage has overcome challenges including a leak in the boat, and has raised thousands for charity

JEDDAH: A group of British adventurers are taking part in an extraordinary sailboat journey from the UK to Makkah to perform Hajj.

The group of five from London, aged between 27 and 47, set off on the inspiring 7,400 km adventure from the English Channel on April 1 and expect to reach 海角直播 later this week.

Sailors Abdul Wahid, Tauseef Ahmed, Jody McIntyre, Dobbir Uddin and Taher Akhtar have made several stops across Europe and North Africa, sharing the highs and lows of sea life with their growing community of followers on social media.

Experiencing moments of faith, joy and frustration, and facing winds and storms in their sails, the 55-day adventure is also raising funds for orphan care charity Global Helping Hands.

The group recently docked in Ismailia city in northeastern Egypt, and plan on making their way to towards the sacred lands of 海角直播 later this week.

Speaking to Arab News from Ismailia, 38-year-old Wahid said the inspiration for the journey came from the mixed influences of his Muslim faith and the maritime history of the UK.

鈥淚t is kind of merging our religion Islam with the country we are residing, and reviving this long-forgotten way to Hajj,鈥 he said.

According to Wahid, none of the group鈥檚 members had sailing experience before the trip.

鈥淲e undertook this journey with no prior experience, therefore, we went through a very intensive training for 6 months,鈥 he said.

鈥淲e had to go into the sea for a week in order to get the training we needed and we managed to get to a very completive level internationally.鈥

The adventure route led the group to go through the English Channel; the Port of Marseille in France; the Mediterranean islands Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily and Crete; the Strait of Messina; the Suez Canal in Egypt and finally the Red Sea leading to Jeddah.

The group has spent almost two months being completely disconnected, off-grid and facing storms on the 1978 Westerly 33 Ketch.

鈥淥ne of the weirdest highlights is the fact that we are here in the sea because we dreamed of a journey at sea 鈥 and made it a reality,鈥 said Wahid.

鈥淚magine, this time last year we had no sailing experience just a rough plan and here we are about to end our journey.鈥

He added: 鈥淚t was terrifying challenge for us but at the end of the day, alhamdulillah, we had a great reward and we are safe.鈥

Ahmed said: 鈥淥ne of the challenges we faced was in the French Canal where there was a blockage of 24 km and we had to lift the boat to the truck despite our delay which took about four days.鈥

He added: 鈥淎nother serious challenge we faced, when we woke up in the morning and we were sinking because of a leak in the boat. Alhamdulillah, we were able to fix it and went on as per our schedule.鈥

Surrounded by blue water, picturesque scenes, and the sporadic sight of marine life, Wahid described the most unforgettable moments of their journey: 鈥淲e encountered dolphins three times during our journey.聽

鈥淲e caught a glimpse of unusual shapes in the water. Soon, we realized that what we were seeing was a small pod of dolphins, playing and swimming in front of us. That was really an amazing scene.鈥

Through the journey, the group aims to raise funds to support orphans in various countries, including Lebanon, Pakistan, Palestine, Uganda, and for Syrian refugees, offering much-needed assistance to the most vulnerable.

The group has received more than 拢200,000 ($266,000) so far.

鈥淭his amount will support orphans in many places,鈥 Wahid said. 鈥淭he second goal of this journey is for Da鈥檞ah purposes.

鈥淲e want to showcase to the world the beauty of pilgrimage in Islam in its original essence, in ancient ways it was performed weather it was walking, horse-riding or in this case sailing.鈥

The expedition is set to complete its final sea passage, lasting up to a week, from Port Suez, Egypt to Jeddah in coordination with BWA Yachting Club KSA, the Red Sea Authority and with the support of JYC facilities.

  • Dr. Seham Othman Omar: The premium residency has many benefits, including freedom of movement
  • Othman Omar: Before the distinguished residency, a person was restricted to working in the hospital where he was employed

RIYADH: Doctors who were granted premium residency status in 海角直播 praised the benefits of the scheme at an event in Riyadh on Monday.

Speaking to Arab News at the Global Health Exhibition, Dr. Seham Othman Omar, an associate consultant in pediatric cardiology at the National Guard Hospital in Riyadh, said: 鈥淭he premium residency has many benefits, including freedom of movement.鈥

She added that the premium residency gave her greater flexibility over where she worked, which allowed her to treat patients 鈥渋n many hospitals, and in many cities.鈥

Dr. Omar came to 海角直播 in 2000 and worked in several different places, including Qassim and Jubail, before settling in Riyadh at the National Guard Hospital.

The premium residency 鈥渁llowed us to move from hospital to hospital and from city to city to assist in some hospitals, such as those that lack cardiologists,鈥 she said.

鈥淏efore the distinguished residency, a person was restricted to working in the hospital where he was employed.

鈥淣ow, however, the doctor can work in other places and contribute to transferring expertise and helping patients in hospitals that do not have consultants specializing in cardiology,鈥 Dr. Omar said.

In the pursuit of securing high-quality services and developing the economy, the Premium Residency Card was introduced in 2019 to retain and attract exceptional professionals to the country.

At last year鈥檚 health exhibition, a number of physicians were granted premium residency status.

The scheme, unofficially known as the 鈥淪audi Green Card,鈥 aims to contribute to the national economy and boost the country鈥檚 position as a global hub for attracting talent, investors and entrepreneurs.

The center offers seven categories of premium residencies, including the special talent residency, investor residency, entrepreneur residency, real estate owner residency, limited duration residency and unlimited duration residency.

Dr. Eyhab Solaiman also shared his experience with the scheme, and said that it allowed him to travel, work and share his expertise in other locations.

鈥淚 applied for the card last year and within a few months, the Premium Residency was issued after fulfilling the requirements,鈥 he said.

鈥淚t did not require permission when leaving the country and returning to 海角直播.鈥

Dr. Solaiman is a consultant cardiologist and advanced cardiac imaging specialist at the King Abdulaziz Center for Heart and Lung Diseases, Surgery and Transplantation.

EV Auto Show powers ahead in Riyadh with smart mobility focus
  • The 4th edition of the event highlights new electric models, local manufacturing and talent development as Kingdom drives toward Vision 2030
  • SIXT CEO Juan Carlos: Riyadh has more charging stations than we have in Madrid

RIYADH: The fourth edition of the EV Auto Show opened at the Riyadh International Convention and Exhibition Center on Monday, highlighting the full spectrum of green mobility options.

As 海角直播 accelerates towards its Vision 20103 smart mobility targets, new market research from PwC Middle East shows 40 percent of the country鈥檚 consumers are considering buying an electric vehicle in the next three years.

The Kingdom has set an ambitious goal to transition 30 percent of all vehicles in Riyadh to electric by 2030, as part of a wider strategy to reduce emissions in the capital city by 50 percent. The transformation is being driven by ambitious targets, substantial investments in local electric vehicle manufacturing and rising consumer confidence.

Speaking about how 海角直播 is evolving to cater to the development of the EV sector, Faisal Sultan, the president of Lucid Motors in the Middle East, told Arab News: 鈥淭he Kingdom now has a structure to cater to that. A lot of progress has already been made (in) the last two years with the formation of the EV infrastructure company by the PIF. We are strongly collaborating with them. Then there are private companies. I think consumers will have a lot of options in the next two to three years.鈥

He added: 鈥淎lso, there will be chargers all over the place. Lucid is doing some innovative stuff 鈥 we are putting them in hotels, we have several parking lots where we have installed these chargers. These are free to use 鈥 that鈥檚 going to solve a lot of issues.鈥

Sultan said he believed Riyadh was taking the lead in ensuring 30 percent of new car sales in the Kingdom would be EVs by 2030, as per the Saudi Green Initiative, and that other cities would follow.

Juan Carlos, CEO of SIXT, told Arab News: 鈥淐oming here to 海角直播 to see how well EV technology is being implemented, I was surprised, Riyadh has more charging stations than we have in Madrid, which is my city of origin.鈥

He added: 鈥淚 was surprised, because at the end, it is an integral part of the mobility within this country. It is clearly supported by the government in line with Vision 2030. We are doing an exercise of implementing the technology with our solutions. Right now, we are probably one of the largest fleets of rental EV fleets in this country, and our ambition really is to continue increasing, those fleets in order to provide a mobility solution which is sustainable.鈥

While he felt Europe was still behind due to a lack of infrastructure, expanding EV penetration was going well in 海角直播, said Carlos. The Kingdom has already expanded its public charging network to more than 200 locations, with plans for more than 1,000 stations by 2030.

This year鈥檚 EV show brings together over 120 exhibitors from 35 countries, highlighting the latest electric and plug-in hybrid technologies. It also features local manufacturing, charging infrastructure and workforce training.

ROX Motor鈥檚 luxury all-terrain SUV, the ROX ADAMAS, debuted in 海角直播 following its global unveiling in Abu Dhabi earlier this month, while Lucid Motors presented the Gravity SUV, showing the growing range of premium electric options available to local consumers.

The exhibition floor features electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles from both established manufacturers and new market entrants, including BYD, Tesla, SIXT, Chery, Jaecoo and iCAUR.

Over the three days, industry executives, government officials and technical specialists will share insights with manufacturers, importers, fleet operators, charging network developers, financial institutions and other stakeholders.

Attendees can test-drive the latest electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, comparing performance, range and features across brands and price points, as well as explore technology and energy management solutions.
