How Saudi organizations are building a sustainable future for wildlife
  • Recent initiatives underscore strong commitment to restoring ecosystems and protecting biodiversity
  • Kingdom鈥檚 approach seen as proof that environmental stewardship and economic growth can coexist

RIYADH: 海角直播 is solidifying its position as a global leader in biodiversity preservation through a series of pioneering initiatives aimed at protecting endangered species and restoring fragile ecosystems.

From the release of endangered animals in the King Khalid Royal Reserve to the historic birth of Arabian leopard triplets, the Kingdom鈥檚 conservation efforts highlight a forward-looking commitment to safeguarding its natural heritage for generations to come.

On Dec. 23, 2024, the National Center for Wildlife (NCW) achieved a significant milestone with the release of 66 endangered animals into the King Khalid Royal Reserve, located northeast of Riyadh.

The release included 40 rhim gazelles, 10 Arabian oryx, 10 Houbara bustards and six Idmi gazelles.

This initiative, conducted in collaboration with the Imam Abdulaziz bin Mohammed Royal Reserve Development Authority, is part of a broader strategy to restore ecological balance, enhance biodiversity and promote eco-tourism.

To ensure the program鈥檚 success, some of the released animals were equipped with solar-powered tracking devices, enabling researchers to monitor their integration and behavior in the wild.

The Arabian Leopard Conservation Breeding Centre in Taif has reached a groundbreaking achievement 鈥 a rare litter of Arabian leopard triplets, two males and one female, was born in June, 2024.

This marks the first recorded triplet birth of the critically endangered Arabian leopard in 海角直播 and only the third such occurrence in captivity worldwide over the past 30 years.

The birth is a pivotal moment for 海角直播鈥檚 conservation efforts led by the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU).

Fewer than 120 Arabian leopards remain in the wild, placing them in the critically endangered category of the International Union for Conservation of Nature鈥檚 Red List.

Since partnering with Panthera in 2019 under the Arabian Leopard Initiative, RCU has made significant strides in protecting this iconic species.

鈥淲hen we assumed management of the Arabian Leopard breeding program in December 2020, we inherited 14 leopards and immediately began drafting strategic plans for new enclosures, team building, and breeding targets,鈥 Abdulaziz Al-Enzy, senior manager of the RCU Breeding Center Management, told Arab News.

The initiative focuses on boosting wild populations, expanding breeding programs, and advancing research to ensure the species鈥 survival.

The breeding center, now home to 32 leopards, has emerged as a global leader in conservation efforts.

鈥淭hrough our KPIs, the center set an ambitious goal of producing two cubs annually,鈥 Al-Enzy said.

鈥淭o date, it has consistently exceeded expectations: one cub in 2021, three in 2022, seven in 2023, and five in 2024.鈥

The center also follows strict protocols for pregnant leopards.

Al-Enzy said females are separated from males during their final trimester, and all activity around them is minimized to ensure a stress-free delivery.

Veterinary teams remain on standby to intervene in case of complications.

鈥淲e鈥檝e achieved remarkable growth by constructing state-of-the-art open-top enclosures, the first of their kind in the Middle East for Arabian leopards, and implementing 24-hour monitoring using 200 CCTV cameras,鈥 Al-Enzy said.

The team, according to him, ensures the leopards are healthy, safe and enriched in their environment.

Protecting the Arabian leopard is not just about saving a species鈥攊t鈥檚 about preserving ecological balance and cultural heritage.

DID YOU KNOW?

鈥 海角直播 released 66 endangered animals, including Arabian oryx, into the King Khalid Royal Reserve.

鈥 Arabian leopard triplets were born in the Kingdom, a rare event for this critically endangered species.

鈥 The Arabian oryx population has increased 60-fold in 海角直播 after being declared extinct in the wild.

鈥 The Kingdom reintroduced cheetahs, with four cubs born in captivity after a 40-year absence.

鈥淭he Arabian leopard plays a critical role in regulating prey populations, maintaining the health of ecosystems, and is deeply rooted in 海角直播鈥檚 culture," Al-Enzy said.

The ultimate goal is to reintroduce these magnificent creatures into the wild sometime in the future. However, this process is fraught with challenges.

鈥淟eopards must be trained to hunt and acquire survival skills, and pre-release enclosures are currently being developed to prepare cubs for life in the wild.鈥

Genetic diversity remains a significant concern, with active collaboration between 海角直播, Oman, Yemen, and the UAE to enhance breeding programs.

鈥淭o address these challenges, RCU launched a genetic exchange program in 2023, swapping male leopards with Oman鈥檚 Royal Court to strengthen genetic diversity,鈥 Al-Enzy said.

These conservation efforts are not just about 海角直播.

鈥淲e are working to save the Arabian leopard from extinction globally, which requires international collaboration and learning from others鈥 experiences,鈥 Al-Enzy said.

Reintroducing captive-bred Arabian leopards to their natural habitat is a complex and long-term goal. Each cub undergoes rigorous evaluation before release, and success depends on partnerships with local and international organizations.

鈥淲e aim to save the Arabian leopard not for one country but for the world. The progress we鈥檝e made so far is just the beginning of this long journey,鈥 Al-Enzy said.

By combining cutting-edge breeding techniques, meticulous monitoring, and global collaboration, 海角直播 is setting an example for wildlife conservation efforts across the region.

海角直播 is also making strides in reintroducing cheetahs, which disappeared from the Arabian Peninsula over 40 years ago. Under the National Cheetah Reintroduction Program, four cubs were born in captivity in 2024鈥攁 landmark achievement given the complexity of breeding cheetahs.

Globally, only 15 percent of wild-born cheetahs manage to reproduce in captivity, with just 20 percent of those continuing to do so.

By overcoming these odds, the National Center for Wildlife is contributing to the survival of a species that now numbers only 7,100 worldwide.

Combining habitat restoration with advanced research and breeding programs, 海角直播 is playing a pivotal role in ensuring the cheetah鈥檚 future.

The Arabian oryx, once extinct in the wild by 1972, symbolizes the Kingdom鈥檚 conservation triumphs.

Reintroduced into its natural habitat, the species was reclassified as vulnerable in 2011.

By 2019, the wild population had risen to 1,220, with an additional 6,000鈥7,000 individuals thriving in semi-captive conditions worldwide.

海角直播 has reported a remarkable 60-fold increase in the oryx population, making it one of the most successful wildlife restoration programs globally.

海角直播鈥檚 conservation efforts extend far beyond individual species. The Kingdom鈥檚 integrated approach leverages cutting-edge technology, international collaborations and community engagement to achieve its goals.

Programs such as the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative, the Arabian Leopard Fund and the National Cheetah Conservation Strategy reflect a deep commitment to restoring ecosystems and protecting biodiversity.

From reintroducing onagers to the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Royal Reserve after a century-long absence to breeding endangered species at state-of-the-art facilities, the Kingdom is setting a global benchmark for conservation.

As biodiversity faces unprecedented threats worldwide, experts say 海角直播鈥檚 approach demonstrates that environmental stewardship and economic growth can coexist.

These efforts not only preserve the Kingdom鈥檚 natural legacy but also offer a blueprint for global action to protect the planet鈥檚 most vulnerable species. Through innovation, dedication, and collaboration, 海角直播 is proving that a sustainable future for wildlife is possible.

海角直播 condemns Ben-Gvir鈥檚 鈥榩rovocative practices鈥 at Al-Aqsa Mosque
  • Jordan also strongly condemns extremist minister鈥檚 storming of Al-Aqsa mosque compound

RIYADH: The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs denounced on Sunday the 鈥減rovocative practices鈥 by Israel鈥檚 far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, saying such practices fuel conflict in the region.

鈥満=侵辈 condemns in the strongest terms the repeated provocative practices by Israeli occupation government officials against Al-Aqsa Mosque and emphasizes that these practices fuel the conflict in the region,鈥 the foreign ministry said.

Ben-Gvir visited the flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem on Sunday and said he prayed there, challenging rules covering one of the most sensitive sites in the Middle East. Under a delicate decades-old 鈥渟tatus quo鈥 arrangement with Muslim authorities, the Al-Aqsa compound is administered by a Jordanian religious foundation and Jews can visit but may not pray there.

鈥淭he Kingdom emphasizes its continued demand to the international community to stop the practices of Israeli occupation officials that violate international laws and norms and undermine peace efforts in the region,鈥 the statement added.

海角直播 had consistently voiced its condemnation of what it described as the continued blatant Israeli attacks on the sanctity of Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Jordan also strongly condemned Ben-Gvir鈥檚 storming of Al-Aqsa, and a foreign ministry statement has described the act as 鈥渁 flagrant violation of international law and international humanitarian law, an unacceptable provocation and a condemned escalation.鈥

鈥淚srael holds no sovereignty over Al-Aqsa Mosque/Al-Haram Al-Sharif,鈥 the statement said.

Ministry spokesperson ambassador Sufian Qudah reiterated Jordan鈥檚 鈥渁bsolute rejection and firm condemnation of the continued, provocative incursions by the extremist minister, as well as the facilitation of repeated settler entries into Al-Aqsa Mosque by Israeli police.鈥

Such actions constitute a clear breach of the historical and legal status quo of the mosque and represent an attempt to divide it temporally and spatially, and a desecration of its sanctity, Qudah said.

Qudah warned of consequences of the provocations and violations against Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, which, he said, aimed at 鈥渇urther dangerous escalation and unilateral measures in the occupied West Bank.鈥

  • Tradition meets innovation in the hands of creatives driven by cultural pride

RIYADH: A new generation of Saudi designers is redefining what fashion means by looking to the past. From traditional architectural motifs to sustainable materials, young creatives are crafting handbags that celebrate Saudi identity and craftsmanship.

In the heart of Jeddah鈥檚 UNESCO World Heritage Site Al-Balad, a brand was born 鈥 not just a result of leather and stitching, but of memory, home, and identity.

For Sara Alsaeed, the founder of Surrah, it all began while walking through the district鈥檚 narrow streets.

Qormuz, founded by Abdulrahman Al-Abed, emphasizes sustainability through meaningful production. (Instagram/qormuz)

She told Arab News: 鈥淚 was surrounded by stories 鈥 textures on old walls, the colors of roshan windows, traditional architectural features used for balconies or windows in historic Jeddah, and the weight of history. That鈥檚 when I began sketching.鈥

Inspired by heritage and driven by elegance, she imagined a modern handbag that paid tribute to Saudi culture.

From the curves of ancient architecture to the palette of historic homes, every detail was carefully considered.

HIGHLIGHT

Through their work, Saudi designers ensure that their heritage does not just live on but thrives.

Even the name Surrah holds meaning. In classical Arabic it refers to a pouch or bundle 鈥 something personal and protective. It is a word still used in the Najd region, and for Alsaeed it captured the soul of her brand: deeply Saudi, beautifully intentional.

Surrah began in late 2021 as a small stationery line during the pandemic.

She said: 鈥淚n my third year of university I had time to reflect. I noticed a lack of Saudi representation in local products. I wanted to create something that felt authentic, that honored our identity.鈥

As tote bags became popular, the brand naturally evolved and shifted toward handbags with the Ashiq Collection, inspired by Jeddah鈥檚 architecture.

鈥淓ach bag became a canvas, carrying pieces of our history in its design,鈥 she said.

Surrah鈥檚 mission goes beyond fashion, and Alsaeed added: 鈥淲e want to bring back the stories of Saudi women from the 1950s to the 1970s. To help young girls see where they come from 鈥 and to carry that heritage proudly into the future.鈥

While Surrah is proudly Saudi, its ambitions are global, and Alsaeed said: 鈥淎s the Kingdom supports local talent more than ever, we have a chance to share our culture with the world.

鈥淲e want people from different places to feel connected to our designs, to be curious about the stories they carry.鈥

On the other side of the design world, another brand is making waves 鈥 not just for its style, but for its philosophy.

Remah, founded by Saudi designer Hatem Abdullah, brings a fresh take on handbags that is both ethical and deeply personal.

Abdulrahman Al-Abed of Qurmoz finds inspiration in forgotten corners of Saudi history, designing clothing that speaks through silence, heritage, and enduring materials.

鈥淚 was searching for something that reflected my identity 鈥 simple, luxurious, and meaningful,鈥 he said.

That search led him to vegan leather made from apples.

He explained: 鈥淚t鈥檚 not just an alternative to animal leather. It鈥檚 smart, luxurious, and environmentally conscious. Why create beauty at the cost of another living being?鈥

For Abdullah, handbags are not limited by gender.

鈥淭hey are expressions of art, taste, and culture 鈥 I design for people who appreciate stories and craftsmanship,鈥 he said.

The name Remah, meaning strength, precision, and determination, was chosen intentionally. 鈥淲e design for women who know what they want 鈥 calm, confident, and graceful,鈥 he added. 鈥淓very piece embodies that spirit.鈥

Similarly rooted in cultural pride, another Saudi creative reshaping fashion is Abdulrahman Al-Abed, founder of Qormuz.

For him, inspiration comes from the forgotten, from 鈥渙ld walls, street conversations, and unfinished stories.鈥

He added: 鈥淚 find beauty in things that still smell like history. I don鈥檛 chase trends; I chase truth.鈥

Qormuz emphasizes sustainability through meaningful production. He chooses fabrics like camel leather, natural cottons, and camel hair 鈥 materials that are both durable and native to the region.

From Surrah鈥檚 heritage-rich designs to Remah鈥檚 sustainable elegance and Qormuz鈥檚 soulful silhouettes, Saudi designers are weaving history into every stitch.

Through their work these designers ensure that Saudi heritage does not just live on but thrives.
