海角直播鈥檚 greatest World Cup moments

海角直播鈥檚 greatest World Cup moments
  • Al-Owairan received the ball inside his own half and embarked on an astonishing run that saw one Belgian defender after another beaten, before finishing past Michel Preud鈥檋omme
  • Saleh Al-Shehri equalized straight after the break and just five minutes later Salem Dawsari sent Saudi and Arab fans wild with one of the tournament鈥檚 most stunning goals

DUBAI: 海角直播 has taken part in six World Cup tournaments, an Arab record it shares with Morocco and Tunisia. Here are our favorite Green Falcons moments from football鈥檚 grandest stage.

5. Saudi defeat Egypt to end winless streak (Russia 2018)

海角直播 returned to the World Cup after an absence of 12 years at Russia 2018 and while there would be no progress from the group stage as there was in the Green Falcons鈥 debut at USA 1994, there was a first win since that tournament 24 years earlier.

Saudi suffered a painful 5-0 defeat against the hosts on the opening day of the tournament and followed that up with a narrow 1-0 loss against Uruguay. It meant that while the final Group A match against fellow Arab qualifiers Egypt was a dead rubber, pride was very much still at stake.

Mohamed Salah, after a stellar season for Liverpool, gave Egypt a 1-0 lead, but deep into stoppage time at the end of the first half, Salman Al-Faraj equalized from the penalty spot.

As the clock passed the 90-minute mark it looked like both teams would be heading home without a win, but Salem Al-Dawsari scored in the 95th minute to make it 2-1 and end the Green Falcon鈥檚 15-match winless World Cup streak.

4. Almost a perfect send-off for Sami Al-Jaber (Germany 2006)

It was almost the ideal end for arguably 海角直播鈥檚 greatest ever footballer.

The 2006 World Cup in Germany may not have ended up being too fondly remembered by Saudi fans but it did provide an early moment which hinted at a repeat of the team鈥檚 1994 heroics.

The Green Falcons鈥 opening match against Tunisia at the Allianz Arena in Munich saw the North African team take the lead from Ziad Jaziri after only 23 minutes but the Saudis struck back with a fine finish by Yasser Al-Qahtani on 57 minutes.

Enter Al-Jaber. Wearing his favored No. 9 green shirt, he was introduced as a substitute after 82 minutes and within moments he was bearing down on Tunisian goalkeeper Ali Boumnijel with the goal at his mercy. Al-Jaber did not disappoint, scoring Saudi鈥檚 second before being mobbed by his ecstatic teammates.

Unfortunately for the team managed by Marcos Paqueta, Tunisia equalized in the dying seconds and Saudi went on to lose their next two matches against Ukraine and Spain.

But at least Al-Jaber鈥檚 fourth and last World Cup had ended like his first, with a goal for his beloved 海角直播.

3. Al-Ghesheyan stunner gives Saudi a fleeting dream (US 1994)

海角直播 had already created history by progressing from the group stages at the US World Cup in 1994 and their reward was a round of 16 clash with Sweden, who would end up being one of the teams of the tournament.

In the stifling heat of Cotton Bowl in Dallas, the Green Falcons, fresh off a stunning win over Belgium in their previous match, put on brave display but found themselves two goals down after an early header from Martin Dahlin and a strike from Kennet Andersson six minutes after the break.

Just as it looked like an exhausted team was only minutes from heading home, up popped substitute Fahad Al-Ghesheyan to breathe life into 海角直播鈥檚 World Cup campaign and allow the fans to dream again.

The 21-year-old collected the ball inside the Swedish penalty area and unleashed a right-foot strike into the roof of the net five minutes from time to suddenly give Saudi hope of a stunning comeback.

But just two minutes later, Andersson scored his second to give Sweden a 3-1 win and eliminate the Falcons from the competition. They had become the first Arab nation to reach the last 16 in their first attempt and no team from the region would progress further until 2022.

2. Al-Owairan scores one of the World Cup鈥檚 greatest goals (USA 1994)

To Diego Maradona鈥檚 iconic solo goal against England in 1986 and Roberto Baggio鈥檚 international career-launching strike against Czechoslovakia in 1990, you can add Saeed Al-Owairan鈥檚 remarkable winner against Belgium in 1994.

海角直播鈥檚 debut at the World Cup had ended with a 2-1 loss to reigning European champions the Netherlands at the RFK Stadium in Washington D.C., but in their second Group F match, they managed an excellent 2-1 win over Morocco at the Giants Stadium in New York.

It meant that progress to the last 16 would depend on their result against Belgium, and the Green Falcons would go on to record one of their greatest ever results back at the RFK.

Only five minutes into the match, Al-Owairan received the ball inside his own half and embarked on an astonishing run that saw one Belgian defender after another beaten, before the forward finished past stranded goalkeeper Michel Preud鈥檋omme.

The stunned Belgians had no answer to that goal in the next 85 minutes. 海角直播, in their first World Cup, were heading to the last 16 and Al-Owairan had written his name alongside the World Cup greats.

1. Saudi claim greatest win over Messi鈥檚 Argentina (Qatar 2022)

There can be few debates about 海角直播鈥檚 greatest World Cup moment.

Few people would have given Herve Renard鈥檚 team much hope of a victory when they took on Lionel Messi and Argentina at Lusail Stadium on Nov. 22, 2022.

And sure enough it was the Argentine maestro who gave the South Americans the lead on 10 minutes from the penalty spot. But the expected Argentinian procession did not materialize. Instead, the Falcons, through gritty defending and smart counterattacks, slowly grew into the game.

The second half would be a revelation. First Saleh Al-Shehri equalized straight after the break and just five minutes later Salem Dawsari sent Saudi and Arab fans in the stadium and around the world wild with one of the tournament鈥檚 most stunning goals.

Messi and his colleagues would go on to win the World Cup, but that day they had no answer to 海角直播鈥檚 tigerish performance.

There would be no progress from the group stage for the Falcons, but the 2-1 scoreline gave them their most famous victory and they would end the tournament as the eventual world champions鈥 only conquerors.

Muthusamy, Rabada take South Africa into 71-run lead over Pakistan
  • South Africa managed to pile up 404 in reply to Pakistan鈥檚 333
  • Pakistan won first Test match against South Africa by 93 runs

Rawalpindi: Senuran Muthusamy and Kagiso Rabada hit fighting half-centuries as South Africa took a crucial 71-run lead over Pakistan on day three of the second Test in Rawalpindi on Wednesday.

Muthusamy made a career-best 89 not out and Rabada struck his highest score of 71 as the visitors added 169 for the last two wickets.

Veteran Pakistan spinner Asif Afridi ended the innings on 404 at the stroke of tea.
The 38-year-old Asif finished with figures of 6-79 and is the oldest man to take five wickets on a Test debut.

The afternoon session though belonged to South Africa as the World Test champions bid to square the two-match series, after losing the first Test by 93 runs in Lahore.

Muthusamy defied the Pakistan spinners, hitting eight fours to improve on his previous highest of 68 not out against Bangladesh at Chattogram last year.

Muthusamy added an invaluable 71 runs for the ninth wicket with Keshav Maharaj (30) and then increased the lead with a last-wicket stand worth 98.

Rabada smashed four sixes and as many fours, improving on the 47 he made against New Zealand at Christchurch in 2022.

The morning belonged to Asif, who at 38 years and 301 days overtook England鈥檚 Charles Marriott as oldest debutant to take five wickets.

Marriott did so against the West Indies at The Oval in 1933 aged 37 years and 332 days.
Like fellow left-armer Maharaj 鈥 who took seven wickets for the visitors in Pakistan鈥檚 333 all out 鈥 Asif used the dry conditions to maximum effect.

South Africa resumed on 185-4 and added 100 runs in the morning session.

With the turn on the Rawalpindi stadium pitch increasing considerably, Asif dismissed Kyle Verreynne caught behind by wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan for 10 with the fourth ball of the day.

Tristan Stubbs defied Pakistan鈥檚 spinners for 256 minutes before a fastish delivery from Asif trapped him leg-before for 76.

His knock was studded with six fours and a six.

Asif completed his five-wicket haul by trapping Simon Harmer leg-before for two while Noman Ali dismissed Marco Jansen in the same manner for 12.

鈥楿nprecedented鈥: International stars shine in NBA season opener as league marks record global presence
  • NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum hails record-breaking 135 international players as league opens its 2025鈥26 season

DUBAI: The 2025鈥26 NBA season tipped off last night with international stars once again taking center stage, highlighting the league鈥檚 growing global reach and balance of power.

In Oklahoma City, Canadian MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the defending champions to a dramatic 125-124 double-overtime win over the Houston Rockets on ring night, scoring 35 points and delivering the decisive free throws.

Out west, Slovenian guard Luka Doncic opened his season in spectacular form for the Los Angeles Lakers, recording 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists in a narrow loss to Golden State, joining Michael Jordan as the only guards in NBA history to open a season with a 40-10-5 stat line.

Their performances captured what NBA Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer Mark Tatum called a 鈥渘ew era鈥 for the league, one defined by the strength and reach of its international players.

鈥淭his marks a new era for our league, and I think it鈥檚 one that鈥檚 going to transform how fans everywhere watch and experience the NBA through our new media partnerships, our most global partnerships to date,鈥 Tatum said.

鈥淲hile we continue to build on the incredible growth of the game, with seven different champions in the last seven seasons, the league鈥檚 historic age of competitiveness gives fans hope that this once again could be their team鈥檚 year.鈥

Record number of international players

Ahead of opening night, Tatum confirmed that the league had reached a historic milestone.

鈥淭here is a record 135 international players on opening-night rosters that beats the previous record by 10,鈥 he said.

鈥淲e have a record number of European players, including a record 19 French players, a record number of players from the UK, and also a record-tying number of players from Australia.

鈥淎s you all know, four international players have combined to win the last seven MVP awards.鈥

That mix of experience and emerging talent has helped shape one of the most competitive landscapes in years.

鈥淭here is no clear favorite to win the championship, and that鈥檚 why it gives more fans some hope,鈥 Tatum said.

鈥淭he skill level in this league is unprecedented right now. There鈥檚 a mix of these all-time greats who are still playing at the highest level. There are these perennial MVP candidates who like the Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Joel Embiid.鈥

Expanding global footprint

Tatum also pointed to the NBA鈥檚 continued international expansion, with preseason and regular-season games held across several continents.

鈥淚 had the opportunity to attend our preseason games in Abu Dhabi and Macau. We also played NBA games for the first time ever in Melbourne, Australia,鈥 he said.

鈥淲e also had preseason games in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and Vancouver, Canada. And I can tell you that the enthusiasm around those games was truly remarkable.鈥

Beyond events, the league is also deepening its structural ties internationally.

鈥淣inety-five percent of the world鈥檚 population is outside the United States,鈥 he added.

鈥淎nd in many of those countries, basketball is either the No.1 or No. 2 sport. Even with everything we鈥檙e doing to engage hundreds of millions of passionate NBA fans around the world, we think we鈥檙e just scratching the surface of how popular this game and this league can be globally.鈥

A global game for a global audience

From Antetokounmpo in Greece to Jokic in Serbia and Embiid in Cameroon, international players continue to define the NBA鈥檚 identity. Rising talents such as Victor Wembanyama, the fastest player ever to reach 1 billion social media views, are expanding that reach even further.

鈥淭hese players not only foster a unique connection between the NBA and the fans in their respective countries,鈥 Tatum said.

鈥淭hey鈥檙e global superstars who resonate in the US and around the world.鈥

As the 2025鈥26 season gets underway, the NBA鈥檚 opening night once again confirmed that basketball鈥檚 brightest stars now shine from every corner of the globe.

  • The Egyptian Olympic wrestler and Palestinian lightweight will return to their roots on Saturday as the UFC brings another historic night to the Etihad Arena

ABU DHABI: Egypt鈥檚 Hamdy Abdelwahab and Palestine鈥檚 Abdul-Kareem Al-Selwady will bring power, passion and more than a little regional pride to the Etihad Arena at 鈥淯FC 321: Aspinall vs. Gane鈥 on Oct. 25.

Abdelwahab, a former Olympic wrestler who represented Egypt at the Tokyo 2020 Games, made history as his country鈥檚 first UFC fighter. He returns to action in Abu Dhabi against American Chris Barnett.

鈥淚t feels great because it feels like I鈥檓 home, fighting in my hometown,鈥 said Abdelwahab, who was born in Cairo.

鈥淚 just told the (Arab fans) that I need their support and I鈥檇 be happy if they came. I want everyone to be here; I hope I don鈥檛 make them disappointed or regret coming.鈥

Abdelwahab wants to deliver Barnett his fourth UFC defeat. 鈥淚t doesn鈥檛 matter what it鈥檚 going to take,鈥 he added. 鈥淚t鈥檚 going to be his luck 鈥 whatever it comes out as 鈥 but we鈥檙e looking to finish this fight.鈥

The Egyptian praised Abu Dhabi鈥檚 efforts to promote martial arts.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a huge difference from a couple of years ago,鈥 he said. 鈥淎bu Dhabi started growing in the sport and growing the organizations and everything, especially in the Middle East.

鈥淚 can rank Abu Dhabi as No. 1, you know, the home of martial arts. I also hear that jiu-jitsu has become one of the subjects in schools for kids, which is a great thing to do.

鈥淵ou can see that any organization hosting fights here in Abu Dhabi, in general, becomes one of the most successful events in any sport. That puts Abu Dhabi at a very high level.鈥

Also taking to the octagon under an Arab flag will be Al-Selwady, for whom UFC 321 marks a comeback after more than a year out.

鈥淓ver since my last fight, I鈥檝e just been keeping my head down, training, and getting better,鈥 said the Palestinian, who faces Brazil鈥檚 Matheus Camilo.

鈥淚 had two fights that didn鈥檛 go through 鈥 one where I got severely injured and the other two opponents kept pulling out. I just kept getting better and better during that time, reflecting on everything that happened.

鈥淚 believe this is all part of God鈥檚 timing, and right now is my time.鈥

Al-Selwady says fighting in Abu Dhabi brings his career full circle: 鈥淚 like to look at it in a positive way wherever I am. If I fight anywhere, I know there鈥檚 going to be a good crowd and I know I have my friends traveling with me.

鈥淏ut fighting here brings me back to when I started MMA in the Middle East. Of course, it鈥檚 nice to come back to your roots and represent in front of everyone. Seeing people who followed me from 10 years ago, eight years ago, all excited to come watch me again.鈥

Al-Selwady has witnessed firsthand the region鈥檚 rapid development in MMA. 鈥淚 started MMA in 2012,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ack then, Jordan was the capital of MMA because there was a promotion based there.

鈥淪eeing Abu Dhabi throughout the years start adopting MMA and really taking over to what it is right now is very beautiful. We鈥檝e grown together, and to fight here right now is an amazing feeling and a great pleasure.鈥

Al-Selwady, nicknamed 鈥淭he Pride of Palestine,鈥 believes the healthy competition between Arab nations has helped the sport flourish.

鈥淪eeing different countries participate in bringing the UFC here, I feel like it鈥檚 a very healthy competition between Arab countries (to see) who鈥檚 going to throw the biggest events. In the end, the fighters are the biggest ones to gain from that.鈥

The five-time Major champion will tee it up in the second edition following a history-making 2025 season. He played a starring role in Europe鈥檚 Ryder Cup victory at Bethpage Black 鈥 their first win on American soil in 13 years.

McIlroy also became the first European to complete the career Grand Slam when he added the 2025 Masters title to his previous Major triumphs at the 2011 US Open, the 2012 and 2014 PGA Championships, and The Open in 2014.

He finished runner-up at the inaugural Dubai Invitational two years ago, one shot behind eventual champion and Ryder Cup teammate Tommy Fleetwood, who has also confirmed for the 2026 edition.

The world No. 2 currently leads the 2025 Race to Dubai.

He is looking forward to 2026 with back-to-back weeks in the UAE for the Dubai Invitational and the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, the first Rolex Series event of the campaign and an event he has won on four occasions.

鈥淒ubai Creek Resort was a fantastic host venue two years ago, and Abdulla and his team put on an incredible event.

鈥淚 came very close to winning that week, so I鈥檓 hoping 2026 will be another really good year for me. And to start strong in the Middle East would be the perfect way to get it underway.鈥

Tournament host Abdulla Al-Naboodah said it was 鈥渁n honor鈥 to have McIlroy play.

鈥淗is participation is a significant addition to our world-class field, and we look forward to delivering another exceptional week of competition and hospitality for players, partners, and spectators.鈥
