LONDON: Britain, Canada and Australia all recognized a Palestinian state on Sunday, with other countries expected to follow suit this week at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

PARIS: French politicians bickered on Sunday over whether it is appropriate to hoist Palestinian flags outside town halls on the eve of the country’s planned recognition of the State of Palestine.
Ahead of the landmark move, set to be finalized at the United Nations General Assembly in New York starting Monday, the government told town halls not to fly the flag and take down any Palestinian banners that they had already put up.

PARIS: Britain, Australia and Canada on Sunday recognized a Palestinian state after nearly two years of war in the Gaza Strip, with France, Belgium and other countries poised to follow suit at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Here is an overview of diplomatic recognition of the state, which was unilaterally proclaimed by the Palestinian leadership in exile in 1988.
Of the territory claimed by the state, Israel currently occupies the West Bank and the Gaza Strip is largely in ruins.

DAMASCUS, Syria: Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa arrived in New York on Sunday to take part in the UN General Assembly, the first president of Syria to do so in nearly six decades.
The last time a Syrian head of state attended the General Assembly was in 1967. That was before the 50-year rule of the Assad family dynasty, which came to an end in December when then-President Bashar Assad was ousted in a lightning insurgent offensive led by Al-Sharaa. Assad’s fall also brought to an end nearly 14 years of civil war.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will join “select” Islamic leaders in a meeting with United States President Donald Trump at the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) next week, the Pakistani foreign office said on Sunday, elaborating that discussions will focus on regional and international peace and security.

Sharif will lead the Pakistan delegation, comprising senior ministers and officials including Deputy PM Ishaq Dar, at the 80th UNGA session from Sept. 22-26 in New York.

The Saudi delegation, led by SDAIA Vice President Sami bin Abdullah Muqeem, will join global officials and experts to discuss AI’s role in sustainable development, security, and innovation, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

NEW YORK: The UN General Assembly voted overwhelmingly on Friday to adopt the “New York Declaration,” a resolution aimed at reviving the two-state solution between Israel and Palestine without involving Hamas.

The resolution passed with 142 votes in favor, 10 against — including Israel and the US —and 12 abstentions. It strongly condemns Hamas for the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks, demands the group disarm and free all hostages, and calls for collective international action to end the war in Gaza.

NEW YORK: The UN General Assembly will vote on Friday whether to back the “New York Declaration,” a resolution which seeks to breathe new life into the two-state solution between Israel and Palestine -- without the involvement of Hamas.

Although Israel has criticized UN bodies for nearly two years over their failure to condemn Hamas's attack on October 7, 2023, the declaration, presented by France and ��ֱ��, leaves no ambiguity.
