Pakistan joins US, Arab states in urging swift UN approval of Gaza peace plan resolution
  • A joint statement backs US-drafted Security Council resolution endorsing Trump鈥檚 Gaza plan
  • Rival Russian draft urges the UN to outline options for implementing the peace plan in Gaza

UNITED NATIONS: The United States and several Arab and Muslim-majority nations including Egypt, 海角直播, Turkiye and Pakistan called Friday for the UN Security Council to quickly adopt a US resolution endorsing Donald Trump鈥檚 peace plan for Gaza.

鈥淭he United States, Qatar, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, the Kingdom of 海角直播, Indonesia, Pakistan, Jordan, and T眉rkiye express our joint support for the Security Council Resolution currently under consideration,鈥 the countries said in a joint statement, adding they were seeking the measure鈥檚 鈥渟wift adoption.鈥

Last week the Americans officially launched negotiations within the 15-member Security Council on a text that would follow up on a ceasefire in the two-year war between Israel and Hamas and endorse Trump鈥檚 plan.

鈥淲e emphasize that this is a sincere effort, and the Plan provides viable path toward peace and stability, not only between the Israelis and the Palestinians, but for the entire region.鈥

A draft of the resolution seen Thursday by AFP 鈥渨elcomes the establishment of the Board of Peace,鈥 a transitional governing body for Gaza 鈥 that Trump would theoretically chair 鈥 with a mandate running until the end of 2027.

It would authorize member states to form a 鈥渢emporary International Stabilization Force (ISF)鈥 that would work with Israel and Egypt and newly trained Palestinian police to help secure border areas and demilitarize the Gaza Strip.

Unlike previous drafts, the latest mentions a possible future Palestinian state.

Friday鈥檚 joint statement comes as Russia circulated a competing draft resolution to Council members that does not authorize the creation of a board of peace or the immediate deployment of an international force in Gaza, according to the text seen Friday by AFP.

The Russian version welcomes 鈥渢he initiative that led to the ceasefire鈥 but does not name Trump.

It calls on the UN secretary general to 鈥渋dentify options for implementing the provisions鈥 of the peace plan and to promptly submit a report that also addresses the possibilities of deploying an international stabilization force in war-ravaged Gaza.

The United States has called the ceasefire 鈥渇ragile,鈥 and warned Thursday of the risks of not adopting its draft.

鈥淎ttempts to sow discord now 鈥 when agreement on this resolution is under active negotiation 鈥 has grave, tangible, and entirely avoidable consequences for Palestinians in Gaza,鈥 a spokesperson for the US mission at the United Nations said in a statement.

While it seemed until now that Council members supported principles of the peace plan, diplomatic sources noted there were multiple questions about the US text, particularly regarding the absence of a monitoring mechanism by the Council, the role of the Palestinian Authority, and details of the ISF鈥檚 mandate.

  • Zardari meets Tajik defense minister, calls Pakistan a gateway for Tajikistan鈥檚 access to sea-linked trade routes
  • Both sides discuss energy, defense and connectivity, with Islamabad reaffirming its commitment to CASA-1000

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday described Tajikistan as a bridge to Central Asia and said his own country served as a gateway to sea-linked trade routes, according to an official statement, during a meeting with Tajik Defense Minister Col. General Sabirzoda Emomali Abdulrahim.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1992, following Tajikistan鈥檚 independence from the Soviet Union. Since then, they have worked to deepen defense cooperation, including counterterrorism coordination and military-to-military training.

Both countries have also pursued ambitious plans to connect Pakistan and Tajikistan through road and rail corridors via Afghanistan. However, political and security challenges, as well as difficult land connectivity through Afghanistan, have slowed down the implementation.

鈥淭he President welcomed the delegation and said that Pakistan greatly values its multifaceted relationship with Tajikistan, embedded in common history, culture and linguistic affinity,鈥 said the statement released by Zardari鈥檚 office after the meeting.

鈥淭erming Tajikistan as a bridge to the heart of Central Asia, the President said that Pakistan is equally Tajikistan鈥檚 gateway to international waters,鈥 it added. 鈥淭he two states can play a significant role in promoting peace and stability in the region, the President said.鈥

Zardari said Pakistan highly valued its multifaceted relationship with Tajikistan, rooted in shared history, culture and linguistic ties.

He stressed the need to further enhance political, cultural and people-to-people exchanges to deepen bilateral engagement.

The president highlighted the potential for expanding trade and investment, particularly in the energy sector, and reaffirmed Pakistan鈥檚 commitment to the timely completion of the CASA-1000 electricity transmission project designed to export surplus hydropower from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to Pakistan via Afghanistan.

Zardari also expressed satisfaction over growing bilateral defense cooperation, citing frequent high-level exchanges and joint military exercises as indicators of strong security ties.

The Tajik defense minister conveyed his country鈥檚 interest in strengthening cooperation with Pakistan across multiple sectors, the statement added.
