DUBAI: The UN Economic and Financial Committee on Wednesday overwhelmingly adopted a resolution recognizing the Palestinian people’s permanent sovereignty over natural resources in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, and the occupied Syrian Golan.
The resolution was supported by 152 countries and opposed by eight, with 12 abstentions.
It called on Israel to cease exploiting natural resources in these territories and recognizes the Palestinian right to claim compensation for such exploitation.
The measure was submitted by the Group of 77 and China and highlights international concerns over the destruction of Palestinian land, agriculture, and infrastructure, including water and electricity systems, particularly in the Gaza Strip.
The resolution now moves to the UN General Assembly for a final vote in December, following the standard annual process for committee-adopted measures.
