RIYADH: The 26th session of the UN Tourism General Assembly has got underway in Riyadh, with º£½ÇÖ±²¥ acting as the first Gulf Cooperation Council country to host such an event.

Taking place from Nov. 7 to 11 under the theme “AI-Powered Tourism: Redefining the Future,†the gathering coincides with the 50th anniversary of the agency’s founding, and  will be attended by leaders from across the globe to unite to shape the future of tourism.

The General Assembly is the principal gathering of the World Tourism Organization and engages in dialogue aimed at securing a brighter, more sustainable future for the industry and shaping the next 50 years of global tourism.

It meets every two years to approve the budget and program of work and to debate topics of vital importance to the tourism sector.

In addition to four General Assembly plenaries, the 26th session will include several meetings of specialized committees, a thematic session to address the future of tourism in an AI-powered age, and the election of the next UN Tourism Secretary-General.

On Friday closed meetings were held, with the opening ceremony and the first plenary session set for Sunday morning.

The 124th and 125th sessions of the Executive Council will also be held in the framework of the Assembly on Nov. 8 and 11, respectively.

Represented by the Ministry of Tourism, º£½ÇÖ±²¥ is welcoming delegations from more than 160 member states, alongside representatives of international organizations and key players in the sector to discuss sustainability and innovation.

º£½ÇÖ±²¥â€™s Minister of Tourism Ahmed Al-Khateeb toured the venue ahead of the General Assembly, and posted on X: “Honored to be on the ground with our talented team as they bring the 26th UN Tourism General Assembly to life. The precision, energy, and unwavering commitment behind every detail are a true reflection of º£½ÇÖ±²¥â€™s dedication to hosting a global gathering of the highest calibre.â€

He added: “As we prepare to welcome the world to Riyadh, I had the privilege of visiting the completed venue for the 26th UN Tourism General Assembly. It is a proud moment to see guests from around the world arriving and enjoying the spirit of hospitality and unity that defines this gathering.â€Â 

Al-Khateeb said he was “honored†to address the 45th Plenary Session of UN Tourism’s Affiliate Members — “a powerful platform uniting public and private sectors to turn ideas into action and ensure tourism continues to be a force for good worldwide.â€

The minister added that the Kingdom is looking forward to serving as host, and organizing a gathering that will redefine joint global action in tourism and amplify its impact across other sectors.

On being the first GCC country to host a UN agency’s general assembly, Al-Khateeb said: “This adds to the significance of this session and underscores the global vote of confidence given to º£½ÇÖ±²¥ as a convener and a trusted platform for international dialogue on tourism. 

“Our mission — as hosts — is to bring the world together, unite views, and foster international cooperation that capitalizes on the growing tourism industry to advance the Sustainable Development Goals.â€

Several ministerial delegations have arrived in Riyadh, including Sierra Leone’s Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs Nabeela Farida Tunis..

Some delegates, including the Indonesian Tourism Minister, are arriving Saturday ahead of the opening ceremony on Sunday, a member of the country’s contingent told Arab News. 

Those attending will not only take part in an international dialogue that charts a roadmap for a more sustainable and prosperous future for global tourism, they will also celebrate five decades of cooperation and progress under the UN Tourism framework.

This will be a decisive month for shaping the next 50 years of global tourism, as immediately after the UN Tourism General Assembly º£½ÇÖ±²¥ will launch the first TOURISE Summit, taking place on Nov. 11 to 13. 

TOURISE is a new global platform that will convene public and private sector leaders in areas including tourism, technology, and investment, as well as sustainability, and culture. 

By hosting the supreme body of the UN Tourism and launching TOURISE, the Kingdom is asserting its growing position as a global hub for cross-sectoral dialogue, a leader in multilateral cooperation, and a rising international tourism powerhouse.

RIYADH: Biban Forum 2025 has once again cemented º£½ÇÖ±²¥â€™s role as a global hub for entrepreneurship and innovation, gathering startups, investors, and business leaders from around the world under one roof at Riyadh Front Exhibition and Conference Center. 

Organized by the Small and Medium Enterprises General Authority, known as Monsha’at, under the theme “A Global Destination for Opportunities,†the event aimed to empower entrepreneurs and strengthen the Kingdom’s position as a destination for business and investment in line with Vision 2030. 

Since its inception in 2017, Biban has grown into the Middle East’s largest entrepreneurship forum. 

The 2025 edition featured representatives from more than 150 countries and over 200 speakers from around the world, alongside thousands of local and international exhibitors. 

The forum’s diverse “doors,†or thematic sections, covered every stage of the entrepreneurial journey — from funding and e-commerce to franchising and global expansion — creating a platform for collaboration and growth across industries and borders.

Among the international participants was South Korea’s technology giant Naver, part of a Korean delegation of startups supported by the Korea Institute of Startup and Entrepreneurship Development. 

Interpreter Jeongmin Han, representing the group, said it was his first time in º£½ÇÖ±²¥ and emphasized the potential for cooperation between the two countries. 

“I think it’s very important for Korean companies to have a base here,†he said. “º£½ÇÖ±²¥ offers a great opportunity and serves as a bridge for expanding business across the Middle East. It’s the best place to start.†

Also participating was Ager Point, a US technology company specializing in artificial intelligence and data solutions for the agriculture and natural asset markets. 

CEO Kevin Lang described the experience as “an exciting time to be in º£½ÇÖ±²¥.†He said: “We think it’s really important to be at Biban. It’s our first time in the Kingdom, and it’s such an exciting moment to contribute to Vision 2030 goals — especially around food security and the management of critical resources like water.†

Lang added that the forum’s collaborative atmosphere provided valuable opportunities to meet entrepreneurs, government representatives, and investors eager to implement technology-driven solutions. 

“If we can find proof-of-concept or pilot projects that allow us to showcase what we can do,†he said, “we can evolve our technology alongside the challenges being addressed here in º£½ÇÖ±²¥ and across the Arabian Peninsula.†

Local talent was equally prominent at the forum. Saudi entrepreneur Hadi Al-Yami, founder of The Bees Basket, showcased his startup dedicated to honey and hive-based products. 

“We are a new company in º£½ÇÖ±²¥ working to prove ourselves and expand,†he said. “We produce high-quality honey and participate in international competitions, and now we want to grow into the medical and tourism sectors.†

Al-Yami praised Biban for providing a platform for emerging Saudi entrepreneurs to network and gain visibility, encouraging others to take part in future editions. 

Biban has become a cornerstone of º£½ÇÖ±²¥â€™s strategy to diversify its economy and nurture a vibrant SME ecosystem. 

The forum not only connects local innovators with global investors but also reinforces the Kingdom’s image as a destination where ideas can evolve into sustainable enterprises. 

By attracting participants from every continent, Biban 2025 underscores the growing confidence in º£½ÇÖ±²¥â€™s entrepreneurial landscape and its alignment with Vision 2030’s goal of positioning the Kingdom as a global hub for innovation and opportunity.
