  • A shower caused a 15-minute break while England was batting
  • Most of a sell-out crowd had already left Hagley Oval

CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand: Rain forced the abandonment of the first Twenty20 international between New Zealand and England after the visitors posted 153-6 in their completed innings Saturday.
Sam Curran top-scored with 49 not out from 35 balls. He hit three fours and two sixes — and 19 runs from the final over of the England innings.
Jos Buttler with 29 from 25 balls and Harry Brook with 20 from 14 both made starts but were unable to go on as the England batters struggled when the New Zealand bowlers took the pace off the ball.
A shower caused a 15-minute break while England was batting, then returned more heavily between innings, finally causing the match to be abandoned around 10.10 p.m. local time. By then, most of a sell-out crowd had already left Hagley Oval.
The remaining two matches of the series are also scheduled to be played at Hagley Oval — on Monday and Thursday.

Rybakina blasts past Paolini to reach Ningbo final
  • Paolini could have secured her ticket to next month’s season finale in Riyadh with success on Saturday
  • the Italian’s defeat means the battle for the last two spots will be settled at next week’s Pan-Pacific Open in Tokyo

NINGBO, China: Elena Rybakina powered into the Ningbo Open final with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Jasmine Paolini on Saturday that keeps her chances alive of qualifying for the WTA Finals.
Paolini could have secured her ticket to next month’s season finale in Riyadh with success on Saturday.
But the Italian’s defeat means the battle for the last two spots will be settled at next week’s Pan-Pacific Open in Tokyo, with Mirra Andreeva also still in contention.
“I knew the match was going to be very tough,” said Rybakina, who improved her head-to-head record against Paolini to 3-3.
“Jasmine has played really well this season and she’s a really tough opponent, so I knew I would need to bring my best.
“I’m happy I stayed focused until the end and won it in straight sets.”
Former Wimbledon champion Rybakina entered the semifinals having lost her last two meetings with Paolini but utilized her big serve and powerful groundstrokes to win in 90 minutes.
Rybakina fired 30 winners, including 10 aces, and saved all seven break points she faced to reach her second final of the season, where she will face either Diana Shnaider or Ekaterina Alexandrova.

  • Afghan, Pakistan negotiators due to hold peace talks in Qatar on Saturday
  • At least 17 Afghans were killed in latest Pakistani air strikes, local media reports

KABUL: Afghanistan has withdrawn its national cricket team from next month’s tri-nation tournament in Pakistan, after three Afghan cricketers were killed in overnight Pakistani military strikes amid the latest flare-up of tensions between the neighbors.

The deadliest clashes in years between the two countries started last week and were triggered by an unclaimed explosion in Kabul and another in the southeastern province of Paktika, for which the Afghan government blamed the Pakistani military.

After days of bloody border fighting that killed dozens of soldiers and civilians from both nations, Afghanistan and Pakistan agreed to a 48-hour truce on Wednesday, which was extended as officials from the two countries held talks in Qatar on Saturday.

However, according to a post on X from the Afghan Taliban government’s chief spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, “Pakistani military forces once again conducted airstrikes on civilian areas in Paktika” on Friday.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board said on Saturday that three Afghan players were among those killed in the latest airstrikes, with local media outlets placing the death toll at 17.

“A drone strike in Urgun district of Paktika province has killed three domestic cricket players … following their return from a local tournament in the provincial capital, Sharana … The deceased players have been identified as Sibghatullah, Kabeer Agha and Haroon,” Sher Dil Danish, ACB provincial manager in Paktika, told Arab News.

In a statement issued after the attacks, the ACB said it was withdrawing from the upcoming Tri-Nation T20I Series, which was scheduled to take place in Rawalpindi and Lahore from Nov. 17 to 29.

Cricket is regarded as the most popular sport in Afghanistan and has represented a rare bright spot for many Afghans as they struggle amid a devastating economic and humanitarian crisis sparked by sanctions slapped on the Taliban administration following their takeover in 2021.

“Cricket and sports have brought nothing but happiness and hope to our country in some of the darkest times. It’s very sad to see our sportsmen being targeted,” Ahmadullah Khalid, a lecturer at Afghanistan’s Paktia University, told Arab News.

“This strike represents not only a grave violation of Afghanistan’s sovereignty but a brutal assault on innocent lives, including young athletes who symbolized hope and unity for our nation … Targeting civilians in a border province already grappling with instability shows a reckless disregard for international law and human decency. This should not be acceptable to anyone,” Khalid added.

  • Champions Al-Ittihad drew 1-1 at Al-Fayha to stay in second place behind Al-Nassr, while the same result at home against Al-Shabab kept AFC Champions League holders in fifth

RIYADH: League football returned to the Kingdom following an international break that saw the Saudi national team confirm World Cup qualification, with reigning champions Al-Ittihad and AFC Champions League holders Al-Ahli both dropping vital points against A-Fayha and Al-Shabab respectively.

The start of the fifth round of the Saudi Pro League saw Al-Fayha take the lead at Al-Majma’ah Sports City Stadium with a goal from Fashion Sakala on the stroke of half-time. They were, however, pegged back by Ahmed Al-Ghamdi’s 64th face-saving equalizer for the champions.

The result left Al-Ittihad in second place, two points behind, with Al-Nassr having played one more match.

Meanwhile Al-Ahli also failed to claim three points, drawing 1-1 against visiting Al-Shabab at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah. The home team took the lead through Ivan Toney after 15 minutes and looked to be holding on to a nervy win when Josh Brownhill levelled for Al-Shabab with just three minutes left.

Al-Ahli are now in fifth place with nine points from five matches, while Al-Shabab are 12th with five points from the same number of fixtures.

Also on Friday, Al-Kholood thrashed visitors Al-Najma 5-1 to lift themselves to an impressive fourth in the standing.

Pakistan to finalize third team for tri-nation series next month after Afghanistan pullout
  • The withdrawal came after Afghanistan said Pakistani airstrikes in Paktika had killed three of their cricketers
  • The tri-series, also featuring Sri Lanka, is due to be played from Nov. 17 till Nov. 29 in Rawalpindi and Lahore

KARACHI: Pakistan will be finalizing a third team for a tri-nation series with Sri Lanka next month, its cricket board said on Saturday, hours after Afghanistan announced their withdrawal from the tournament.

The withdrawal came after the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) said Pakistani airstrikes had killed three of its cricketers in Paktika province close to the border with Pakistan.

A Pakistan security official said the strikes targeted a militant group. The assault ended a fragile truce announced by both sides on Wednesday after days of cross-border clashes that killed dozens on both sides.

The ACB said it considered the killing of the three players “a great loss for Afghanistan’s sports community” and had decided to withdraw from next month’s tri-series “as a gesture of respect to the victims.”

“The tri series is on and the third team will be finalized shortly,” a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) spokesman told Arab News, without commenting on the skirmishes.

The tri-series, also featuring Sri Lanka, is due to be played from Nov. 17 till Nov. 29 in Rawalpindi and Lahore as part of the teams’ preparations for the next year’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

It would have been second tri-series featuring Pakistan and Afghanistan in four months after both teams competed in a three-nation tournament in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in September.

Pakistan defeated Afghanistan in the final of that tournament.
