  • Paolini could have secured her ticket to next month’s season finale in Riyadh with success on Saturday
  • the Italian’s defeat means the battle for the last two spots will be settled at next week’s Pan-Pacific Open in Tokyo

NINGBO, China: Elena Rybakina powered into the Ningbo Open final with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Jasmine Paolini on Saturday that keeps her chances alive of qualifying for the WTA Finals.
Paolini could have secured her ticket to next month’s season finale in Riyadh with success on Saturday.
But the Italian’s defeat means the battle for the last two spots will be settled at next week’s Pan-Pacific Open in Tokyo, with Mirra Andreeva also still in contention.
“I knew the match was going to be very tough,” said Rybakina, who improved her head-to-head record against Paolini to 3-3.
“Jasmine has played really well this season and she’s a really tough opponent, so I knew I would need to bring my best.
“I’m happy I stayed focused until the end and won it in straight sets.”
Former Wimbledon champion Rybakina entered the semifinals having lost her last two meetings with Paolini but utilized her big serve and powerful groundstrokes to win in 90 minutes.
Rybakina fired 30 winners, including 10 aces, and saved all seven break points she faced to reach her second final of the season, where she will face either Diana Shnaider or Ekaterina Alexandrova.

  • The Afghanistan Cricket Board has withdrawn its national team from next month’s Twenty20 tri-series in Pakistan
  • The decision follows claims that three local cricketers died due to Pakistan military strikes

ISLAMABAD: The Afghanistan Cricket Board has withdrawn its national team from next month’s Twenty20 tri-series in Pakistan after it claimed three local cricketers died due to Pakistan military strikes in southeastern Paktika province on Friday.
The ACB said in a post on social media Saturday that the cricketers were “targeted during a gathering” in Urgun district when they returned home after playing a friendly cricket match in Sharana, the capital of Paktika province.
Afghanistan cricket board spokesman Said Nasim Sadat identified the three players as Kabeer Agha Argon, Sibghatullah Zirok, and Haroon, who, like many Afghans, only goes by one name.
“The ACB considers this a great loss for Afghanistan’s sports community, its athletes, and the cricketing family,” the ACB said.
“In response of this tragic incident and as a gesture of respect to the victims, the Afghanistan Cricket Board has decided to withdraw from participating in the upcoming Tri-Nation T20I Series.”
Afghan captain Rashid Khan and the Afghanistan Sports Journalists Federation welcomed the decision. The federation condemned the strike as a “barbaric and shameful act, which stands in clear violation of all international laws.”
The tri-series, also featuring Sri Lanka, was due to be played in between Nov. 17-29 in Rawalpindi and Lahore as part of teams’ preparations for next year’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
It would have been second tri-series featuring Pakistan and Afghanistan in four months after both teams competed in a three-nation tournament in United Arab Emirates in September. Pakistan beat Afghanistan in the final of that tournament.

  • Champions Al-Ittihad drew 1-1 at Al-Fayha to stay in second place behind Al-Nassr, while the same result at home against Al-Shabab kept AFC Champions League holders in fifth

RIYADH: League football returned to the Kingdom following an international break that saw the Saudi national team confirm World Cup qualification, with reigning champions Al-Ittihad and AFC Champions League holders Al-Ahli both dropping vital points against A-Fayha and Al-Shabab respectively.

The start of the fifth round of the Saudi Pro League saw Al-Fayha take the lead at Al-Majma’ah Sports City Stadium with a goal from Fashion Sakala on the stroke of half-time. They were, however, pegged back by Ahmed Al-Ghamdi’s 64th face-saving equalizer for the champions.

The result left Al-Ittihad in second place, two points behind, with Al-Nassr having played one more match.

Meanwhile Al-Ahli also failed to claim three points, drawing 1-1 against visiting Al-Shabab at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah. The home team took the lead through Ivan Toney after 15 minutes and looked to be holding on to a nervy win when Josh Brownhill levelled for Al-Shabab with just three minutes left.

Al-Ahli are now in fifth place with nine points from five matches, while Al-Shabab are 12th with five points from the same number of fixtures.

Also on Friday, Al-Kholood thrashed visitors Al-Najma 5-1 to lift themselves to an impressive fourth in the standing.

  • The withdrawal came after Afghanistan said Pakistani airstrikes in Paktika had killed three of their cricketers
  • The tri-series, also featuring Sri Lanka, is due to be played from Nov. 17 till Nov. 29 in Rawalpindi and Lahore

KARACHI: Pakistan will be finalizing a third team for a tri-nation series with Sri Lanka next month, its cricket board said on Saturday, hours after Afghanistan announced their withdrawal from the tournament.

The withdrawal came after the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) said Pakistani airstrikes had killed three of its cricketers in Paktika province close to the border with Pakistan.

A Pakistan security official said the strikes targeted a militant group. The assault ended a fragile truce announced by both sides on Wednesday after days of cross-border clashes that killed dozens on both sides.

The ACB said it considered the killing of the three players “a great loss for Afghanistan’s sports community” and had decided to withdraw from next month’s tri-series “as a gesture of respect to the victims.”

“The tri series is on and the third team will be finalized shortly,” a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) spokesman told Arab News, without commenting on the skirmishes.

The tri-series, also featuring Sri Lanka, is due to be played from Nov. 17 till Nov. 29 in Rawalpindi and Lahore as part of the teams’ preparations for the next year’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

It would have been second tri-series featuring Pakistan and Afghanistan in four months after both teams competed in a three-nation tournament in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in September.

Pakistan defeated Afghanistan in the final of that tournament.

  • Players plan to pause for 15 seconds after kickoff in games in the ninth round held from Friday through Monday
  • The union said the captains of the 20 top-flight sides were in agreement with the protest

BARCELONA: La Liga players will protest this weekend the league’s decision to hold a regular season game in Miami, the Spanish soccer players’ union said on Friday.
Players plan to pause for 15 seconds after kickoff in games in the ninth round held from Friday through Monday, Spanish media reported.
The players’ union said in a statement that the “players will protest in a symbolic fashion to denounce the lack of transparency, dialogue and coherence of La Liga regarding the possibility of playing a game in the United States.”
La Liga made official last week its plans to hold the Barcelona-Villarreal game in Miami on Dec. 20.
The union said the captains of the 20 top-flight sides were in agreement with the protest. But the union added it had not asked the Barcelona and Villarreal players to participate in the protest, even though, the union said “they share the basic premise of the protest.”
The ninth round kicked off on Friday with Oviedo hosting Espanyol.
Barcelona players and coach not happy
Earlier Friday, Barcelona coach Hansi Flick, and his players were not pleased at having to travel 7,200 kilometers (4,500 miles) to play a regular season game.
“My players are not happy, I am not happy, but La Liga decided that we will play this game,” Flick said at a press conference in reply to a question about his position on the game.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has defended the move by saying it represents an opportunity to further push into the American sports market.
But for Flick and his players, it represents added travel before a short winter break. Barcelona will also travel to ֱ for the Spanish Super Cup starting on Jan. 7.
Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong also criticized playing the game in the US, saying players were already overloaded with travel and a packed playing calendar.
Like Barcelona, Villarreal was also playing in the Champions League.
La Liga president Javier Tebas has defended the game abroad as a key to boosting “revenues in the mid- to long-term” and increasing the value of his competition’s television rights, which lag behind those of England’s Premier League.
Tebas said the league plans to make an international match an annual event.
The match will be at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, home of the NFL’s Miami Dolphins.
The league has chartered planes to take to Florida what it estimates will be 2,000 to 3,000 fans from Villarreal, which is the home team.
