Forest denied late in Betis draw as Roma edge Nice in Europa League
  • Forest held 2-2 at Betis despite Igor Jesus double
  • Roma beat Nice 2-1 as Dante sets age record
  • Iheanacho scores for Celtic, Braga edge Feyenoord

SEVILLE, Spain: Nottingham Forest’s long-awaited return to European competition ended in a 2-2 Europa League draw at Real Betis on Wednesday, with Igor Jesus’s first-half double canceled out by a late Antony strike, while AS Roma opened their campaign with a 2-1 victory at Nice.

Forest’s return to a major European competition for the first time since March 1996 began on the wrong foot, with Betis taking the lead inside 15 minutes when Cedric Bakambu fired an effort high into the net.

The two-time European Cup winners responded swiftly as Igor Jesus leveled from close range within two minutes and then headed in again in the 23rd minute.

Both sides pushed for a breakthrough following the interval. Betis gradually seized more control as the match wore on and were finally rewarded five minutes from time, when Antony tucked away Marc Roca’s cross to ensure the spoils were shared.

With the result, Forest boss Ange Postecoglou became the club’s first permanent manager since Billy Walker in 1946 to go without a win in his opening four matches.

“I think first I should be proud of the players’ efforts. It’s a difficult place to come, difficult conditions, people don’t realize the humidity out there,” Postecoglou said to TNT Sports.

“I’m just disappointed that the players and supporters don’t get the rewards for our efforts. I’ve just got to make sure they keep their heads up because there’s plenty to be positive about and the wins will come.”

Dante sets age record

Roma began their campaign with a 2-1 victory at Nice, sparked by quickfire goals from defenders Evan N’Dicka and Gianluca Mancini within three minutes early in the second half, after a cautious and uneventful opening period.

Terem Moffi pulled one back for the hosts from the penalty spot in the 77th minute after Niccolo Pisilli brought down Antoine Mendy inside the area, setting up a tense finish, but Nice could not find the equalizer despite late pressure.

Nice captain Dante became the oldest outfield player in the competition’s history at 41.

Halftime substitute Kelechi Iheanacho fired high into the net to put Celtic ahead at Red Star Belgrade in the 55th minute, but Marko Arnautovic struck back 10 minutes later to secure a 1-1 draw.

“We showed moments of quality and Kelechi’s goal was quality but I still want us to be proactive in the game. It was a nice first step for us in the competition,” Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers said.

Portuguese side Braga celebrated a 1-0 home victory over Feyenoord, sealed by Fran Navarro’s decisive strike in the 79th minute.

Newcastle cruise past Bradford as League Cup defense begins in style
  • Phil Foden was on target for Manchester City as they beat League One Huddersfield Town 2-0 away
  • Eberechi Eze netted his first goal for Arsenal since his move from Crystal Palace to send his side to a 2-0 win at Port Vale
  • Tottenham Hotspur’s bright start to the season under new manager Thomas Frank continued as they cruised to a 3-0 victory at home to Doncaster Rovers

NEWCASTLE, England: Two goals apiece by Joelinton and William Osula helped holders Newcastle United ease to a 4-1 victory over third-tier Bradford City and into the League Cup fourth round on Wednesday.

Newcastle ended a 70-year domestic trophy drought by beating Liverpool to win last season’s competition and once Joelinton and Osula scored in the space of two minutes early they were never in any danger of a shock exit.

The night could have been billed Premier League vs. League One as Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur all entered the competition against third-tier opposition.

Phil Foden was on target for Manchester City as they beat League One Huddersfield Town 2-0 away while Eberechi Eze netted his first goal for Arsenal since his move from Crystal Palace to send his side to a 2-0 win at Port Vale.

Tottenham Hotspur’s bright start to the season under new manager Thomas Frank continued as they cruised to a 3-0 victory at home to Doncaster Rovers.

The fourth-round draw, made late in the evening, gave Newcastle a home tie against Tottenham while Manchester City are away at second-tier Swansea City. Arsenal will host Brighton and Hove Albion while Liverpool are at home to Crystal Palace. Chelsea are away at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe fielded a strong line-up for his side’s opening hurdle in the defense of their trophy and his team proved too slick for League One leaders Bradford.

Joelinton put them ahead in the 17th minute with his first goal for nine months, controlling Anthony Gordon’s shot and placing his effort past Bradford keeper Sam Walker.

Osula ran through to make it 2-0 in the 19th minute but Newcastle had to wait until the 75th minute for Joelinton to make it 3-0 with another cool slotted finish.

Boyhood Newcastle fan Andy Cook smashed a reply for the visitors after coming off the bench but Osula confirmed Newcastle’s superiority with his second goal.

Foden has shown glimpses of a return to his best form for City and he gave them an early lead with a clinical finish after exchanging passes with Divine Mukasa. He then set up Savinho in the 74th minute to wrap up the tie.

Eze made a big impact when coming off the bench against Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday — his pass creating a stoppage-time equalizer for Gabriel Martinelli.

On Wednesday, Martinelli returned the favor, helping set up the 60 million pounds ($81 million) signing to score in the eighth minute.

“Very special. I’ve been waiting to score for this club for a long time and the first is very special,” Eze said.

Arsenal were rarely in top gear and needed a late goal by Leandro Trossard to wrap it up.

Joao Palhinha scored with an acrobatic overhead kick to give Tottenham an early breakthrough at home to Doncaster, his first goal for the club and the hosts were in cruise control after a Jay McGrath own goal. Brennan Johnson got on the scoresheet for the London club in stoppage time.

The draw for the last-16 included three Welsh clubs for the first time and two of them meet, with Hollywood-backed Wrexham at home against Cardiff City.

  • Atletico are ninth and trail league leaders Real Madrid by nine points ahead of Saturday’s derby clash against Xabi Alonso’s side

MADRID: Julian Alvarez scored a hat-trick to snatch Atletico Madrid a thrilling 3-2 win over Rayo Vallecano in La Liga on Wednesday.
The Rojiblancos fell behind in the 78th minute but Alvarez, who had opened the scoring, struck twice more in the final stages to claim three points for Diego Simeone’s side.
The Argentina international helped Atletico secure only their second win from six league matches during a shaky start to the campaign.
Atletico are ninth and trail league leaders Real Madrid by nine points ahead of Saturday’s derby clash against Xabi Alonso’s side.
Alvarez, who missed a penalty in Atletico’s frustrating draw at Mallorca last weekend, opened the scoring at the Metropolitano stadium.
The 25-year-old, who joined from Manchester City in 2024, volleyed home from Marcos Llorente’s looping cross after 15 minutes to get the ball rolling.
The striker should have netted a second before half-time but fired high over the crossbar from Nahuel Molina’s perfectly-judged ball.
Visitors Rayo made the hosts pay in first-half stoppage time when Pep Chavarria scored one of the goals of the season, a bullet from distance which ripped into the top corner past Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
Rayo substitute Alvaro Garcia sent his team ahead when played in on goal, rounding Oblak before squeezing home from a tight angle.
It enraged Atletico and they began pouring forward, quickly finding an equalizer.
Rayo goalkeeper Augusto Batalla kept out an effort from Simeone’s son Giuliano, but Alvarez was on hand to blast the rebound home from point-blank range.
With Rayo rocking he completed his treble in the 88th minute, producing a superb finish to beat Batalla from the edge of the box.
After grumbling about being substituted during the Mallorca game, Alvarez showed his coach against Rayo why he is best left on the pitch.

Pakistan’s Shaheen sends Asia Cup warning as third India clash looms
  • India and Pakistan have met twice in this edition of the regional competition but the neighbors have never played against each other in an Asia Cup final

DUBAI: Pakistan pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi has declared that his team will reach the Asia Cup final and can beat India if the arch-rivals clash again.

Pakistan kept their campaign alive with a five-wicket win over Sri Lanka in a Super Four clash in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.

India and Pakistan have met twice in this edition of the regional competition but the neighbors have never played against each other in an Asia Cup final.

The regional tournament, played this time in the UAE under the Twenty20 format, started in 1984 and this is its 17th edition.

Bangladesh, who face India on Wednesday and Pakistan on Thursday, stand in the way of the great rivals facing off in Sunday’s decider in Dubai.

India are holders and beat Pakistan in both previous matches, but Shaheen was in a bullish mood after taking 3-28 against Sri Lanka.

“They have still not reached the final; when they do, then we will see them,” said Shaheen.

“We are here to win the cup, whichever team comes in the final we are ready to beat them.”

If both teams reach the final, India will once again start as strong favorites having won 12 of 15 T20Is between the two countries.

India have also won the last seven internationals against Pakistan since September 2022, four T20Is and three one-day internationals.

That sequence prompted India skipper Suryakumar Yadav to declare India-Pakistan “is not a rivalry anymore.”

In both wins for India in the UAE there were no handshakes, adding another layer to an already intense rivalry.

“It is his opinion that, let him say that,” said Shaheen of Suryakumar’s cutting comments.

“When they reach the final then we will see. Our job is to win the Asia Cup, and we will make a complete effort to do that.”

  • Protests called for Israeli clubs to be expelled from European competition in response to mass casualties in the Gaza war
  • Police detained several protesters at the scene

THESSALONIKI, Greece: Police conducted a large-scale security operation outside the stadium Wednesday ahead of Israeli team’ Maccabi Tel Aviv’s game against Greek club PAOK in the Europa League.
Two small protests took place earlier in Thessaloniki in northern Greece, calling for Israeli clubs to be expelled from European competition in response to mass casualties in the war in Gaza.

Around 120 Israeli fans traveled to Greece for the match and were held behind a police cordon before entering the 28,000-seat Toumba Stadium.
Officers from a special forces unit escorted the Maccabi team bus to the venue, while bomb squad sniffer dogs inspected the site.
Earlier, protesters climbed scaffolding on a building complex that also houses the US consulate and unfurled a banner reading “Genocide” in English from the side of the building.
Police detained several protesters at the scene.

Camilo Ospina set to be crowned champion jockey as Taif summer season draws to a close
  • 10 weeks of racing come to an end with the King Khalid Racecourse Championships on Saturday
  • Camilo Ospina has amassed 20 winners and is seven clear of his nearest rivals, so victory looks assured

TAIF: Camilo Ospina is poised to become Taif Winter Season champion jockey as 10 weeks of racing come to an end with the King Khalid Racecourse Championships on Saturday.

Although the Colombian rider is without a mount in the final event of the campaign, he has amassed 20 winners and is seven clear of his nearest rivals, so victory looks assured.

The SR300,000 ($80,000) King Khalid Racecourse Championship for older horses over 1600m brings the curtain down on the summer season before racing resumes in Riyadh on Oct. 16, and many familiar names have been declared among the 17 runners.

Adel Al-Fouraidi’s mount Waqtuk (USA) is top-rated with the Tuwaiq Cup runner-up on a hat-trick bid after his two Taif wins, including when beating the reopposing Final Destination (GB) and Ibn Toulon (KSA) among others in the King Khalid Racecourse Championship Prep earlier this month.

In addition to Final Destination, trainer Thamer Al-Daihani also sends out Uncle (GB) for owner Sheikh Abdullah Homoud Almalek Al-Sabah, while the Red Stable team of Prince Faisal bin Khaled bin Abdulaziz has four runners, including the highly rated Salfan (KSA), who makes a belated return to action.

Nine will go to post in the SR300,000 King Khalid Racecourse Championship for fillies and mares over 1400m with Ospina primed to add to his seasonal haul on the White Stables of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz & Sons’ Aeadat (KSA).

The 6-year-old mare hasn’t tasted defeat since March of last year and looks for a remarkable 10th straight win and her third of the Taif campaign.

Her main rival appears to be fellow White Stables runner and Al-Fouraidi’s mount Halaa (USA), who was fourth in the Group 2 Riyadh Dirt Sprint at The Saudi Cup meeting and had Ospina in the plate on her only start of this term when second on July 26.

The King Khalid Racecourse Championship for Purebred Arabians is also worth SR300,000 and could be another big win for trainer Nasser Mutlaq with Mutwakel Al-Khalediah (KSA) following on from Tilal Al-Khalediah’s (KSA) triumph last weekend.

Mutwakel Al-Khalediah is top-rated in the 10-strong field but hasn’t been seen since August 2023, with recent fitness and form resting with the Fahad Al-Fouraidi-ridden Turki Al-Khalediah II (KSA), who beat several of his rivals on Sept. 12.

Ospina has another stand-out chance on Saturday with White Stable’s unbeaten Kanzie (USA), who looks for a third success in the SR150,000 JCSA Challenge, in which the Red Stables have Taif Sprint Cup winner Newtown Runner (USA) stepping back up to 1600m under Nawaf Al-Mudiani.

Friday’s card also has big prize money available to the sprint specialists, with three races over 1200m each offering SR300,000.

The final of those is the Sprint Championship for 3-year-old colts and geldings and features Al-Daihani’s Fouj (USA), who has won both starts this campaign, and Alexis Moreno’s mount, Riyadh Central (USA), who won an equivalent race for juveniles last year and shaped well on his recent return.

Kawafill (KSA) has been dropped back to 1200m on her last two starts and looks interesting in the 3-year-old fillies’ event, with Sprint Championship Prep winner Baseqm And Bake (USA) looking set to go close under Moreno in the Purebred Arabian race.
