  • Focal Minister for 海角直播 Musadik Malik says the recent defense pact has brought new zeal to historic partnership between both nations

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is celebrating the Saudi National Day today, Tuesday, with greater zeal after both countries signed a landmark defense agreement this month, official said, reaffirming their commitment to further strengthening their brotherly ties and expanding cooperation across every sphere.

The Saudi National Day is celebrated each year on September 23 to commemorate the proclamation of the Kingdom of 海角直播 in 1932 by King Abdulaziz. This year, it comes days after Pakistan and the Kingdom signed a 鈥楽trategic Mutual Defense Agreement.鈥

Under the pact signed in Riyadh, aggression against one country would be treated as an attack on both. The deal, sealed during Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif鈥檚 state visit to the Kingdom this month, is meant to enhance joint deterrence and deepen decades of military and security cooperation.

To mark the Saudi National Day, Pakistan鈥檚 capital Islamabad has been decorated with Saudi flags and pictures of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, with buildings adorned with green lights symbolizing the color of the Saudi flag.

鈥淓very single time, whether it was economic hardship, or if there was any kind of defense-related situation, we always found the Kingdom [of 海角直播] by our side and every single time, any issue, if Saudi [Arabia] needed support of Pakistan on any issue, whether it be foreign policy or any other issue, we have been by their side,鈥 Musadik Malik, Pakistan鈥檚 climate change minister who is also the focal person for Pakistan-海角直播 bilateral collaboration, told Arab News, explaining the depth of their bilateral ties.

鈥淭his formalization [of a defense agreement] has created a new zeal among the people of Pakistan and also the people of the Kingdom of 海角直播. So, I think, you would see the same things, all those things that have been happening forever, but with a greater zeal.鈥

This is the first time Pakistan will hold the Saudi National Day ceremony at the spacious Convention Center building in Islamabad on Tuesday evening, which is likely to be attended by top Pakistani government functionaries, officials of the Saudi embassy and other dignitaries.

Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and PM Sharif issued their special congratulatory messages for the occasion.

鈥淥n behalf of the people of Pakistan, I extend my heartfelt felicitations to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, and to the brotherly people of the Kingdom of 海角直播 on the occasion of their National Day,鈥 Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari said in a statement on Tuesday.

鈥淭his day is a reminder of how, in a relatively short span of time, 海角直播 has set remarkable examples of progress and stability under its wise and determined leadership.鈥

The bond between Pakistan and 海角直播 is rooted in trust, devotion and brotherhood, according to the president.

鈥淔or the people of Pakistan, our spiritual connection with the Kingdom is deepened by the presence of Islam鈥檚 two holiest sites鈥 the Holy Ka鈥檃ba and the Masjid-e-Nabwi. This sacred link lends an enduring strength and uniqueness to our friendship,鈥 he said.

鈥淲e take pride in the fact that in recent days our ties have reached new milestones. The fresh partnership forged in the fields of defense and security is not only a reflection of our mutual trust but also a vital step toward peace and stability in the region.鈥

In his message on the Saudi National Day, PM Sharif extended his warmest congratulations to King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed and the people of 海角直播 for the exceptional development journey of the Kingdom.

鈥淢illions of Pakistanis consider 海角直播 their second home, and are actively involved in its construction and development. The services of Pakistani brotherhood in 海角直播 are the cause of cordial relations, prosperity and progress between the two brotherly countries,鈥 he said.

鈥淭oday, on the occasion of 海角直播鈥檚 National Day, I reiterate my resolve on behalf of Pakistan that we are determined to further strengthen this long-lasting partnership. May Allah Almighty always bless the Kingdom of 海角直播 with progress and glory.鈥

Pakistan PM to join Muslim leaders鈥 meeting with Trump at UNGA sidelines today
  • Trump to meet leaders of Pakistan, 海角直播, UAE. Qatar, Turkiye, Indonesia, Egypt and Jordan, says White House
  • Meeting takes place as Israel intensifies military operations in Gaza, where it has killed over 65,000 since October 2023

ISLAMABAD: US President Donald Trump will meet the leaders of Muslim countries Pakistan, 海角直播, UAE, Turkiye, Indonesia and others today, Tuesday, in a multilateral meeting at the sidelines of the ongoing United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed.

Pakistan鈥檚 foreign office said on Sunday that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif would join 鈥渟elect鈥 leaders of Muslim countries in a meeting with Trump at the sidelines of the UNGA. The foreign office had said both sides 鈥渨ould exchange views on issues pertaining to regional and international peace and security.鈥

The meeting takes place at a crucial time for the Middle East region as Israel ramps up its military operations in Gaza, where it has killed over 65,000 people since October 2023. Several Muslim nations have rallied against the Israeli forces and urged the international community to hold Tel Aviv accountable for the killing of innocent civilians.

鈥淭he president will also later in the day hold a multilateral meeting with Qatar, the Kingdom of 海角直播, Indonesia, Turkiye, Pakistan, Egypt, the UAE and Jordan,鈥 Leavitt said during a press briefing on Monday.

Pakistan鈥檚 PM arrived in New York on Monday to attend the 80th session of the UNGA, which takes place amid raging conflicts in the Middle East, Ukraine and rising tensions in the South Asia region, from Sept.23-29.

Sharif鈥檚 meeting with Trump also reflects Pakistan鈥檚 improving ties with Washington. After years of strained relations during the Joe Biden administration over differences on several key issues, Islamabad and Washington have warmed up to each other during Trump鈥檚 ongoing tenure.

Pakistan praised the American president and nominated him for a Nobel Peace Prize after he brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan on May 10. The militaries of the two nuclear-armed neighbors had engaged in the worst fighting between them since 1999, killing over 70 on both sides of the border before Washington intervened.

Pakistan鈥檚 ties with the US also improved after Washington鈥檚 relations with India took a turn for the worse when Trump announced trade tariffs against New Delhi earlier this year. Islamabad and Washington, on the other hand, finalized a trade deal.

Sharif, who is in the US to lead Pakistan鈥檚 delegation during the UNGA session, will draw the world鈥檚 attention to atrocities in Palestine and Kashmir, hold bilateral meetings with world leaders and senior UN officials and also attend key seminars and events.

Foreign shipping lines warn Pakistan of trade disruption over 鈥榠ll-planned鈥 tax requirements
  • Association says officials compelling non-resident ship owners to register, obtain national tax number and take exposure to 鈥榰npredictable鈥 tax environment
  • Federal Board of Revenue says registering non-resident ship owners is a statutory requirement, aims to curb outflow of 鈥榠llegal remittances鈥 from the country

KARACHI: Foreign shipping lines handling 90 percent of Pakistan鈥檚 seaborne trade have warned of a 鈥渢otal disruption鈥 of the country鈥檚 imports and exports, citing 鈥渋ll-planned鈥 tax requirements that their agents say Pakistan鈥檚 Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is trying to enforce.

In a letter written to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif dated Sept. 19, the Pakistan Ship鈥檚 Agents Association (PSAA) said FBR officials were compelling non-resident ship owners to register themselves on the national tax collector鈥檚 portal, obtain national tax number (NTN), file tax returns and take exposure to the country鈥檚 鈥渦npredictable鈥 tax environment.

Calling the move as 鈥渋ll-planned鈥, the PSAA warned of an 鈥渋mpending crisis鈥 that is likely to affect Pakistan鈥檚 entire seaborne trade.

鈥淏y arbitrary one-sided actions, FBR is creating extreme hardships for foreign flag vessels upon which Pakistan鈥檚 trade is entirely dependent,鈥 PSAA chairman Mohammed A. Rajpar said in the letter addressed to the prime minister.

鈥淵ou are requested to direct the concerned authorities to restore the previous system鈥 rather than resorting to strong arm tactics which tantamount to threatening total disruption to Pakistan鈥檚 imports and exports.鈥

PSAA represents foreign shipping lines such as Maersk, China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO), Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), CMA CGM and around 50 others.

The South Asian country depends on these shipping lines for the transportation of 90 percent of its seaborne trade, which amounted to $90.4 billion in the last fiscal year that ended in June, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). The remaining 10 percent cargoes, mostly comprising oil, are shipped by the state-run Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC).

Rajpar said all non-resident foreign shipping firms had their authorized representatives present in Pakistan and had been fulfilling and complying with all legal requirements as far as income tax was concerned.

鈥淭his move by FBR runs totally counter to the current government鈥檚 ease of doing business policies, particularly when dealing with foreign entities,鈥 the PSAA chairman said.

REVENUE AUTHORITY REJECTS CLAIMS

The warning comes as Sharif鈥檚 government has joined hands with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and bilateral partners like 海角直播, China and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to revive Pakistan鈥檚 debt-ridden economy by increasing revenues.

The IMF鈥檚 $7 billion loan program, which Islamabad secured last year, requires the government to broaden the country鈥檚 narrow tax base and plug revenue leakages.

鈥淭he claim that FBR has introduced an unlawful requirement is misplaced,鈥 Wasiq Mushtaq, a deputy commissioner at the FBR鈥檚 inland revenue service, told Arab News, citing relevant income tax law which 鈥渆xpressly requires every ship鈥檚 master to file voyage-wise freight returns in Pakistan.鈥

鈥淭he system is lawful, internationally consistent, and facilitates trade as process of ship鈥檚 assessment would be transparent and digitally handled thus more expedient rather than hindering it.鈥

He said registering non-resident ship owners was a statutory requirement and was being practiced globally, citing examples of India, Malaysia and Australia.

The non-enforcement of relevant law had resulted in the outflow of 鈥渋llegal remittances鈥 from the country, according to the FBR official. He did not specify a number for the said remittances.

It has 鈥減rima-facie resulted in huge revenue losses,鈥 Mushtaq added.

POSSIBLE CONSEQUENCES

Syed Tahir Hussain, the PSAA secretary general, insisted that the tax requirements were causing difficulties for all foreign shipping lines, which might stop transporting shipments if the authorities did not address the issue.

鈥淭he shipping lines would either stop calling at Pakistani ports, while those already anchored at local ports would not be able to sail out for the want of clearance from income tax authorities,鈥 Hussain warned.

  • Deputy PM Ishaq Dar assures Islamabad鈥檚 support for all efforts aimed at fostering peace, stability and prosperity in Middle East, beyond

ISLAMABAD: Leaders from Pakistan, Arab Gulf nations and other Muslim states met on Monday in New York to ponder a unified approach on key regional and global issues at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), the Pakistani foreign office said.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif led the Pakistan delegation to New York as the General Assembly High-level Week 2025 kicked off on Monday, with global leaders in attendance and Tuesday, Sept. 23 set to be the first day of the high-level General Debate at the 80th session.

On Monday, Deputy PM and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, represented Pakistan in consultations hosted by Qatari PM Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani in New York, which also included deputy prime ministers of Jordan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and foreign ministers of 海角直播, Egypt, Indonesia and Turkiye.

Dar underscored that the people of Pakistan had great affinity for their Muslim brethren in the Middle East and would support all constructive endeavours aimed at fostering peace, stability and prosperity in the region and beyond.

鈥淭he ministers exchanged views and coordinated positions for unified approach on some of the key issues at the UN General Assembly session,鈥 the Pakistani foreign office said.

The UNGA session comes in the backdrop of Israel鈥檚 nearly two-year war on Gaza and the recent strikes against Hamas leaders in the Qatari capital of Doha, which raised fears of a wider military conflict in an already volatile region and drew condemnations from the Muslim world.

The 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly is being held under the theme 鈥淏etter together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights.鈥

From Sept. 23 till Sept. 29, the session will feature speeches from presidents, prime ministers and monarchs who will deliver national statements, set out visions for peace, development, human rights and collective action at the iconic green marble podium.

Pakistan PM Sharif as well as various world leaders will also take part in the 鈥淗igh-level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution,鈥 which will be co-chaired by 海角直播 and France.

In a statement on Sunday, Pakistan鈥檚 foreign ministry said Sharif will urge the international community to resolve the crises in Palestine and disputed Kashmir territory and grant the people there the right to self-determination. The Pakistani prime minister will call for decisive action to end the suffering of the Palestinians.

鈥淗e will also highlight Pakistan鈥檚 perspective on the regional security situation as well as other issues of international concern, including climate change, terrorism, Islamophobia, and sustainable development,鈥 the statement said.

鈥淭he prime minister will also participate in a meeting of select Islamic leaders with US President [Donald] Trump to exchange views on issues pertaining to regional and international peace and security.鈥

Sharif is expected to hold bilateral meetings with several world leaders and senior UN officials to discuss matters of mutual interest, according to the Pakistan foreign ministry. He will also underline Pakistan鈥檚 resolve to work with all UN member states to uphold the UN Charter, prevent conflict, foster peace and promote global prosperity in Pakistan鈥檚 current role as a member of the Security Council.

Pakistan鈥檚 largescale manufacturing recorded 8.9 percent year-on-year growth in July, official says
  • The figure constituted a 37-month high and a 2.6 percent month-on-month increase, with momentum building at start of the fiscal year
  • The development comes as Pakistan, bolstered by a $7 billion IMF program, makes efforts to boost exports for a sustained recovery

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan鈥檚 largescale manufacturing industries recorded an 8.9 percent year-on-year growth in July 2025, the country鈥檚 finance adviser said on Monday, amid a positive economic outlook.

The figure constituted a 37-month high and a 2.6 percent month-on-month increase, with momentum building at the start of the fiscal year 2025-26, which also begins in July, according to Finance Adviser Khurram Schehzad.

Furniture recorded 87 percent growth, automobiles 58 percent, transport 46 percent, apparel 25 percent, cement 17 percent, paper 15 percent and food products witnessed 7 percent growth, with textiles, pharma and IT equipment also showing resilience.

The development comes as Pakistan, bolstered by a $7 billion International Monetary Fund (IMF) program, makes efforts to boost its exports and attract foreign investment to ensure a sustained economic recovery.

鈥淭he broad-based industrial growth reflects a reviving economy, improving consumer demand, and strengthening confidence in Pakistan鈥檚 manufacturing sector,鈥 Schehzad said on X.

Islamabad views trade and investment as key to escaping a prolonged macroeconomic crisis that has put a strain on its fragile economy.

鈥淲ith multiple industries back in the expansion mode (decline in cost of capital, energy and change in direction of travel in taxation), the outlook signals sustained economic recovery and resilience ahead,鈥 Schehzad added.
