TikTok boosts Saudi GDP by $1bn, supports over 25,000 jobs
  • TikTok has helped more than 170,000 small and medium-sized businesses active on the platform to expand their outreach
  • The platform also powered the content economy in º£½ÇÖ±²¥

RIYADH: Popular short-video platform TikTok contributed SR3.9 billion ($1.04 billion) to º£½ÇÖ±²¥â€™s gross domestic product in 2024 and supported more than 25,000 jobs across the Kingdom, according to a new report released on Thursday.

The findings, published in TikTok’s first socio-economic impact report for the Kingdom, were produced in collaboration with Redseer Strategy Consultants.

“The TikTok Effect†highlighted the platform’s role in economic diversification, entrepreneurship and cultural expression as part of the Saudi Vision 2030 transformation.

It revealed TikTok has helped more than 170,000 small and medium-sized businesses active on the platform to expand their outreach and increase their operational efficiency, creating new opportunities for creatives and entrepreneurs.

By giving them the platform, TikTok empowered the businesses to generate SR3 billion ($800 million) in additional revenue last year through its advertising tools and free services. This aligned with Vision 2030’s aim of increasing the GDP share of SMBs to 35 percent, TikTok said.

Around 61 percent of Saudi SMBs using TikTok reported improved brand visibility, while nearly half said they had launched new products in response to audience feedback. Around 42 percent said TikTok helped reduce marketing time and costs, allowing them to focus on growth.

The platform also powered the content economy in º£½ÇÖ±²¥, with 54 percent of local creators saying the platform helped them reach their target audiences.

According to the report, TikTok, which hosts over one million creators, has become a key tool for community engagement, self-expression and financial independence particularly among youth and women.

More than half of surveyed SMBs said TikTok encouraged young Saudis to launch ventures. Meanwhile, 23 percent of female Saudi entrepreneurs said they were inspired to start their business because of their experience on the platform.

“TikTok’s impact in º£½ÇÖ±²¥ extends well beyond entertainment. The platform is fostering entrepreneurship, enabling job creation and strengthening cultural identity,†said Hatem Samman, TikTok’s executive director of government relations and public policy for º£½ÇÖ±²¥.

“We are encouraged by the rapid growth of content creation and digital innovation in the Kingdom, which are paving the way for new industries and economic opportunities.â€

The report said TikTok was also supporting º£½ÇÖ±²¥â€™s tourism goals by positioning it as a global destination. Internationally, 30 percent of users surveyed said they were inspired to visit the Kingdom after engaging with content on TikTok, while 25 percent said the platform improved its image abroad in areas such as tourism, sports, and culture.

Beyond business growth, TikTok also shapes consumer choices and spending, according to the report. In 2024, the platform influenced SR110 billion ($29.3 billion) in annual consumer purchases and generated an estimated SR19 billion ($5 billion) in consumer surplus.

It also helped amplify º£½ÇÖ±²¥â€™s cultural identity, with 88 percent of local users saying it promoted national pride. Nearly 40 percent said the platform helped them express their heritage, while 42 percent discovered new domestic travel destinations through Saudi content.

“As º£½ÇÖ±²¥ advances toward its Vision 2030 objectives, TikTok is proud to serve as a partner in unlocking opportunities for businesses, creators, and communities across the country,†Samman said.

Direct Jeddah–Pristina flights open doors for Saudi investors, says Kosovo ambassador

RIYADH: The launch of direct flynas flights between Jeddah and Pristina is more than a tourism milestone — it signals Kosovo’s rise as a new destination for Saudi business and investment, according to the country’s ambassador.

Kosovo’s Ambassador to º£½ÇÖ±²¥, Lulzim Mjeku, told Arab News the new air link, which will begin operating three times a week on Oct. 1, represents a historic step in building commercial bridges between the two nations.

“The most frequent question asked of me from both countries’ business communities was: Is there a direct flight between KSA and RKS? It wasn’t until last year that both states signed the Agreement on Air Services.†Mjeku said.

He added: “Today, as both countries have concluded several basic agreements with a focus on business, I may say that through this work, both governments have paved the way for business communities to start exploring avenues of cooperation.†

While the connection opens Kosovo’s mountains and Ottoman heritage to Saudi tourists, Mjeku emphasized that the real opportunities lie in the country’s investment climate.

Kosovo boasts the highest internet penetration rate in Europe at 96.4 percent, a multilingual and skilled workforce, and a streamlined business environment, positioning itself as a gateway for Saudi investors entering the Western Balkans.

“Kosovo is a vibrant country emerging in the global market,†the ambassador said. “Our workforce is skilled and multilingual, and our economy is diversifying, from construction and textiles to advanced information technology.†

When asked whether the new connectivity would encourage Saudi investors to explore opportunities in Kosovo, Mjeku pointed to early successes in technology partnerships.

He noted that Kosovar firms have already contributed to the Tawakkalna application in cooperation with Saudi partners and developed cybersecurity systems for hospitals in Riyadh.

“I expect more Kosovar IT companies will find their way to the Saudi market. I also strongly believe both sides can find a win-win modus operandi and have their share in the market,†he said, adding: “Whoever moves first has the chance to succeed faster and better.†

The competitive framework is another draw. Corporate tax is set at just 10 percent, while starting a business takes an average of 4.5 days. Investments account for 36 percent of Kosovo’s gross domestic product, with an average economic growth rate of 4.1 percent over the past eight years. “Whoever moves first has the chance to succeed faster and better,†the ambassador stressed.

The launch of flights follows last year’s Agreement on Air Services and coincided with the first visit of a Saudi business delegation to Kosovo, led by the Federation of Saudi Chambers of Commerce, marking the 15th anniversary of diplomatic ties.

The Kingdom’s leading low-cost carrier will operate the Jeddah–Pristina route as part of its expansion strategy, “We Connect the World to the Kingdom,†aligned with the Kingdom’s National Civil Aviation Strategy.

The plan aims to link the Kingdom to 250 international destinations, accommodate 330 million passengers, and host 150 million tourists annually by 2030.

For Mjeku, these developments herald a new phase in Saudi–Kosovar relations. “With these flights come opportunities, and with opportunities, we get better results and solidify our relationship on an inter-human level,†he said.

  • The Israeli airstrikes in Yemen that killed at least 35 people and wounded more than 130 others also caused damaged to Yemen’s national museum and other historical sites in its capital city

SANAA, Yemen (AP) — The Israeli airstrikes in Yemen that killed at least 35 people and wounded more than 130 others also caused damaged to Yemen's national museum and other historical sites in its capital city, the Houthi Ministry of Culture said Thursday.
The status of the artifacts inside the museum is still unclear but thousands of historical artifacts are at risk of damage, according to the ministry. Associated Press photos and video footage from the site of the strike showed damage to the building’s facade.
The ministry called on the UN cultural agency UNESCO to condemn the attack and to intervene to help protect this historical building and its artifacts.
Most of those killed were in Sanaa, the capital, where a military headquarters and a fuel station were hit on Wednesday, the Houthi-run health ministry said.
Israel has previously launched waves of airstrikes in response to the Houthis’ firing of missiles and drones at Israel. The Iran-backed Houthis say they are supporting Hamas and the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, and on Sunday they sent a drone that breached Israel’s multilayered air defenses and slammed into a southern airport.

India routs UAE for 57 to notch 9-wicket win in Asia Cup
  • UAE batters had no answer for India’s relentless bowling attack

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates: Left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav and seamer Shivam Dube helped limit the United Arab Emirates to 57 runs as India swept to a nine-wicket win in the Asia Cup on Wednesday.
Kuldeep baffled batters with his sharp googlies and bagged 4-7 while Dube claimed 3-4 to dismiss UAE in 13.1 overs — the lowest-ever T20 total against India.
In the Group A game, India cruised to 60-1 in just 4.3 overs with opening batter Abhishek Sharma (30) showing flashes of his skillful power-hitting and Shubman Gill scoring an unbeaten 20.
UAE folds without a fight
UAE batters had no answer for India’s relentless bowling attack despite Jasprit Bumrah showing signs of rustiness in his first T20 game since the World Cup last year.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav believed his team was “flexible†when India won the toss and the skipper chose to field. India had lost the toss in 15 consecutive games.
Alishan Sharafu (22) and captain Muhammad Waseem (19) gave UAE a reasonable start of 41-2 in the powerplay before the batters crumbled against Kuldeep’s sharp spin and Dube warmed up for more tougher games ahead in the tournament with a three-wicket haul.
Bumrah nailed Sharafu will his trademark smearing yorker in the second over and Mohammad Zohaib sliced a catch to backward point when he tried to play Varun Chakravarthy inside out.
Kuldeep’s three-wicket over, that included a plumb leg before wicket dismissal of Waseem, rattled UAE middle-order before Dube claimed three wickets in his two overs and UAE folded with more than six overs to spare.
India called back No. 10 batter Junaid Siddique after wicketkeeper Sanju Samson had him stumped when the batter strolled out of his crease after he missed a pull shot of Dube.
India accepted Siddique’s clarification that he came out of his crease to explain that he got distracted with a rag falling from the pocket of Dube.
However, Siddique couldn’t open his account as he fell of the next legitimate ball of Dube when Suryakumar held onto a high catch at mid-on.
Kuldeep finished off the innings when he had Haider Ali caught behind.
India’s quick chase
Left-handed Abhishek showed how quickly he could unsettle the bowlers in the powerplay when he smashed spinner Ali’s first ball for a six over wide extra cover with his trademark inside out shot. He smashed three sixes and two boundaries in his 16-ball knock.
India needed only 10 runs when Abhishek miscued Siddique’s short ball and got caught at wide mid-wicket but Suryakumar smashed Siddique over fine-leg for a six off the first ball he faced.
Gill then completed the victory with a boundary to mid-on of Simranjeet Singh as UAE slumped to heavy defeat in the group that also include Pakistan and first-timer Oman.
