Liverpool agree Isak deal with Newcastle for British record fee: reports
  • The Swedish forward is reportedly set to join the Reds in a deal worth about £130 million ($176 million)
  • The fee will set a new Premier League transfer record, exceeding the £106 million that Chelsea paid Benfica for Enzo Fernandez in 2023

LONDON: Premier League champions Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for a British record transfer fee, media reports said Monday.
The Swedish forward is set to join the Reds in a deal worth about £130 million ($176 million), according to reports by The Athletic and The Telegraph, among other outlets.
The Athletic reported that Isak will undergo a medical on Monday before completing a six-year deal with the Merseyside club.
The fee will set a new Premier League transfer record, exceeding the £106 million that Chelsea paid Benfica for Enzo Fernandez in 2023, the reports said.
Isak, 25, scored 23 goals in the Premier League last season — behind only Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah — as Newcastle qualified for the Champions League.
He has been the subject of a protracted and acrimonious transfer saga this summer, training away from the rest of the Newcastle squad after making clear his desire to move to Liverpool.
Newcastle reportedly rejected an initial £110 million bid for Isak earlier this summer.
But the deal edged closer after the Magpies signed German international striker Nick Woltemade on Saturday for a club-record fee reported to be worth up to £69 million.
Isak will become the latest blockbuster acquisition in a lavish summer spending spree by Liverpool, who also brought in German midfielder Florian Wirtz in another massive deal.
The Reds have also signed French attacker Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt, Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen and Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe had hinted for the first time on Friday he might be open to allowing Isak to leave because of the impact a sale would have on Newcastle’s profit and sustainability calculations.
The northeast club were forced to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh last year in order to avoid a points deduction, and a sizeable return on their investment in Isak would ease any Profit and Sustainability Regulations concerns.
Despite the influx of new talent Liverpool have not so far looked like the relentless team that strolled to the Premier League title last season with four games to spare.
But they still top the table with three wins from three after dispatching last year’s runners-up, Arsenal, 1-0 at Anfield on Sunday.
Newcastle sit 17th in the early running after a 0-0 stalemate against Leeds United.

Guirassy leads Dortmund to a 3-0 win over Union Berlin in Bundesliga
  • Dortmund drew its league-opening game 3-3 at St. Pauli last weekend, when Guirassy also scored

DORTMUND, Germany: Serhou Guirassy scored twice as Borussia Dortmund beat Union Berlin 3-0 for its first Bundesliga win of the season on Sunday.
Guirassy finished off a cross from Yan Couto before the break, then the Guinea star beat Union ‘keeper Frederik Rönnow with a delicate chip before the hour-mark.
Felix Nmecha made it 3-0 in the 81st.
Jobe Bellingham needed treatment early on after a clash of heads with Union’s Andrej Ilić but the English teenager was able to play till the 70th.
Argentine defender Aaron Anselmino started for his Dortmund debut following his arrival on loan from Chelsea on Wednesday.
Dortmund drew its league-opening game 3-3 at St. Pauli last weekend, when Guirassy also scored.
Cologne celebrates
Promoted Cologne romped to a 4-1 victory over Freiburg to make it two wins from two since the team’s return to the top flight.
Only Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt can boast similar records. Also Sunday, Cologne was drawn against Bayern in the second round of the German Cup.
Earlier, Nadiem Amiri converted a late penalty for Mainz to grab a point at Wolfsburg with a 1-1 draw.

Szoboszlai stunner secures Liverpool win over Arsenal in early-season clash of heavyweights
  • With a long-range free kick that flew in off the post in the 83rd minute, Szoboszlai earned Liverpool a hard-fought 1-0 win over the opponent likely to be the biggest challenger to its title

Full time was approaching at Anfield and it was clear something special was needed to separate Liverpool and Arsenal as they slugged out an early-season heavyweight contest in the Premier League on Sunday.
Enter Dominik Szoboszlai.
With a long-range free kick that flew in off the post in the 83rd minute, Szoboszlai earned Liverpool a hard-fought 1-0 win over the opponent likely to be the biggest challenger to its title.
“The game needed a moment of magic for either team to win it,” Liverpool manager Arne Slot said, “and it was Dominik who did so.”
Many thought Manchester City would be back in the title race this season, but perhaps not.
Collapsing to a 2-1 loss at Brighton, for a second straight loss, was another sign that Pep Guardiola’s once-dominant team has lost its aura.
“This is the reality — we are not at the level from a long time (ago),” City midfielder Rodri said.
Trent who?
Szoboszlai is popular among Liverpool fans for his work ethic and versatility, and the Hungary midfielder was filling in at right back — for so long the position of the now-departed Trent Alexander-Arnold — because of injuries to Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong.
Szoboszlai did his best impression of Alexander-Arnold with a top-quality dead-ball strike that was out of keeping with the rest of the game.
“Until now Trent was taking them,” Szoboszlai said of his former teammate who now plays for Real Madrid. “Now I could finally take one.”
It secured a third straight win for Liverpool, with the defending champions the only team on a maximum nine points after three rounds of the Premier League. They’ve already beaten two tough rivals in Newcastle and Arsenal, too.
As for Arsenal, it was a first loss this season — extending its winless record at Anfield dating back to 2012 — and a first league goal conceded by a defense that was without center back William Saliba from the fifth minute at Anfield because of a leg injury.
“When you play against this kind of team and at a high level where the margins are minimal, they can be decided by a magic moment,” Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said. “We needed that moment for us and we didn’t have it.”
New season, same issues for City
The defeat at Brighton followed a 2-0 home loss to Tottenham last weekend for City, which is demonstrating the same vulnerabilities and brittleness it showed last season when surrendering the title to Liverpool after four consecutive years as champions.
Brajan Gruda surged through an open defense, rounded goalkeeper James Trafford and slotted into an empty net for the 89th-minute winner for Brighton, which trailed to Erling Haaland’s first-half strike — his 88th goal in 100 Premier League appearances since moving to England in 2022.
City, which gave a first start to Rodri — the Ballon d’Or winner — since September last year following a serious knee injury, conceded an equalizer in the 67th minute after Matheus Nunes raised his arm in the area to block a shot.
James Milner converted the penalty for Brighton to become — at age 39 years and 239 days — the second-oldest scorer in Premier League history. He is also the second youngest, having netted as a 16-year-old for Leeds.
With City noticeably fading, Brighton created a succession of chances before Gruda converted one to seal a repeat of his team’s come-from-behind 2-1 win over City last season.
“We forgot to play,” Guardiola said.
City’s only points so far this season have come from a 4-0 opening-round win at Wolverhampton, after which pundits were saying Guardiola’s team was back. Now, it has fewer points than Manchester United.
Surprise win for West Ham
West Ham eased the pressure on manager Graham Potter with a 3-0 win at Nottingham Forest, secured by late goals by Jarrod Bowen, Lucas Paqueta — from the penalty spot — and Callum Wilson.
West Ham lost its first two games in the league, conceding eight goals in the process, and also was eliminated from the English League Cup in midweek.
Paqueta, the Brazil midfielder, celebrated his successful penalty kick by pretending to answer a call and throw away a phone before kissing the badge on his jersey — perhaps a nod to being linked over the past 24 hours with a move to Aston Villa.
Late game
Crystal Palace visits Villa in the final game on Sunday to wrap up the Premier League’s third round.

  • Defeat extends the Sky Blues’ troubled start to the Premier League season

LONDON: Manchester City blew the lead in a shock 2-1 defeat at Brighton that extended their troubled start to the Premier League season, while Liverpool braced for their blockbuster clash with title rivals Arsenal on Sunday.
City striker Erling Haaland marked his 100th Premier League appearance with his 88th goal in the competition since joining from Borussia Dortmund in 2022.
But the 25-year-old’s third goal this season wasn’t enough to help Pep Guardiola’s side bounce back from last weekend’s 2-0 home defeat against Tottenham.
James Milner’s second half penalty hauled Brighton level before Brajan Gruda’s late strike completed City’s collapse.
“We concede the goal and after that it shifted. Until then it was really good, we had chances and the team looked aggressive and dynamic,” Guardiola said.
“We made a good hour and then after the last half an hour we were not good. We forgot to pass the ball, just played long balls and we were not good enough.
“It is what it is. I like many things that we are doing and when we come back we know the squad we are going to have and we are going to try to compete.”
Haaland should have given City an early lead after racing clean through, but he scuffed a tame shot straight at Bart Verbruggen.
The Norway striker missed another chance with a weak header from Rayan Ait-Nouri’s cross, allowing Verbruggen the chance to claw it to safety.
Haaland persevered and finally pierced the Brighton defense in the 34th minute, stabbing past Verbruggen from close-range after Omar Marmoush prodded the ball into his path.
Haaland forced Verbruggen into a miscued clearance just before half-time, but Rodri blazed the chance over in his first league start since September 2024 after a serious knee injury.
Matheus Nunes handed Brighton a lifeline in the 67th minute.
Lewis Dunk shrugged off Bernardo Silva’s attempt to mark him and blasted a shot that Nunes blocked with his arm away from his body.
Milner sent James Trafford the wrong way with a clinical penalty before copying Diogo Jota’s goal celebration in tribute to his former Liverpool team-mate who died in a car crash in July.
It was the 39-year-old’s first Premier League goal since 2019, making him the second oldest scorer in the competition’s history behind Teddy Sheringham, who was 40 when he set the record.
City were in disarray and German youngster Gruda made them pay in the 89th minute, breaking into the area before delivering a composed finish to spark wild celebrations as Guardiola looked on in disbelief.

West Ham beats Nottingham Forest
In Sunday’s other early game, West Ham eased the pressure on boss Graham Potter with a 3-0 win against Nottingham Forest.
Potter had faced calls for his sacking after West Ham conceded eight goals in two successive top-flight defeats, then crashed out of the League Cup at Wolves.
Former Chelsea and Brighton boss Potter, who has only been in charge of West Ham since January, may have earned a stay of execution thanks to their late goal spree at the City Ground.
England forward Jarrod Bowen curled home from 18 yards in the 84th minute.
Lucas Paqueta converted an 88th minute penalty after Crysencio Summerville was fouled by Ibrahim Sangare.
Callum Wilson sealed the Hammers’ first win this season with a 90th minute header.
Forest’s first defeat this season came after boss Nuno Espirito Santo criticized the club’s transfer policy and admitted his relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis has suffered.
Liverpool and Arsenal boast 100 percent records after winning their opening two games of the season, setting the stage for a fascinating duel at Anfield.
Arsenal finished as runners-up behind champions Liverpool last term and both clubs have been engaged in an expensive arms race since the end of the season.
A host of high-profile signings aimed at tilting the balance of power in the title race have arrived at Anfield and the Emirates Stadium.
The likes of Liverpool’s Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike and Arsenal’s Martin Zubimendi and Viktor Gyokeres have their chance to shine under the spotlight on Sunday.

Real Madrid rally to beat Mallorca 2-1 despite VAR woes
  • Without a win this season, Mallorca played a clever game and tried to hit Madrid on the break, but the home side had too much quality in attack

MADRID: Real Madrid recovered from a goal down to beat Mallorca 2-1 at the Bernabeu on Saturday as the home side made light of having three goals chalked off after VAR reviews to make it three wins out of three in La Liga this season.
What should have been a comfortable victory for the home side left fans with their nerves jangling, however, and they needed a goalline clearance from Alvaro Carreras to secure the three points.
Kylian Mbappe was the first to have a goal overturned by VAR when he pounced to score from a superb ball by Trent Alexander-Arnold in the seventh minute, but the review found him to be marginally offside.
Mallorca took a shock lead 11 minutes later when striker Vedat Muriqi muscled his way into the middle of the penalty area at a corner to steer the ball into the net with a combination of his back and shoulder.
Real levelled in the 37th minute after a superbly-worked corner that led to Dean Huijsen teeing up 20-year-old Arda Guler to score with a close-range header.
Vinicius Jr gave his side the lead a minute later, surging forward before cutting back on to his left foot and sending a bouncing shot low into the far corner.
Without a win this season, Mallorca played a clever game and tried to hit Madrid on the break, but the home side had too much quality in attack, and Mbappe had another goal chalked off in first-half stoppage time.
Guler was the next to taste disappointment as his effort 10 minutes after the break was ruled out when a VAR review found him guilty of handball in the build-up, and the home side had Carreras to thank when he pulled off a tremendous goalline clearance to prevent Mallorca from equalising.

‘We’ll send him back’: Bayern confirm collapse of Jackson deal
  • Jackson arrived in Munich on Saturday set to sign a season-long loan
  • Bayern sporting director Max Eberl confirmed to reporters the deal was off

AUGSBURG, Germany: Bayern Munich on Saturday evening confirmed that a proposed loan deal for Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson had collapsed after the English club called off the deal.

Jackson arrived in Munich on Saturday set to sign a season-long loan with the German champions, who had an option to buy the player.

But an injury to Chelsea forward Liam Delap in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Fulham meant the London club recalled the Senegal striker from Germany before he put pen to paper.

Speaking after Saturday’s 3-2 win at Augsburg, Bayern sporting director Max Eberl confirmed to reporters the deal was off.

“Chelsea informed us that they would like the player back after we agreed yesterday.

“The situation now is that the lad is here in Munich, but we are sending him back.”

Jackson’s agent had earlier insisted on social media that his player was not returning to Chelsea.

“We’re not going back. The plane doesn’t go backwards: Munich.”

The German champions were looking for additional support up front for striker Harry Kane, having lost forward Kingsley Coman, Leroy Sane, Thomas Mueller and Mathys Tel in the summer.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca suggested he expected Delap to miss six to eight weeks.

“When you have two strikers, it’s enough. When one of them is injured for different weeks, probably it’s not enough,” Marseca said.

The transfer window closes on Monday, September 1.
