Osaka condemns Ostapenko over heated US Open row with Townsend
  • Taylor Townsend and Jelena Ostapenko verbally dueled at the net after their match
  • Osakahas been an outspoken supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement

NEW YORK: Naomi Osaka said using words like “no education” and “no class” to criticize a Black tennis player were among the worst things to say as the debate over a heated row between Taylor Townsend and Jelena Ostapenko raged on at the US Open on Thursday. Townsend, who is Black, overcame 2017 French Open champion Ostapenko 7-5, 6-1 in a tough second-round battle a day earlier. But the real tension came shortly after match point, when the pair verbally dueled at the net, with the Latvian repeatedly wagging her finger at the American.
Townsend revealed a part of the exchange during her on-court interview, after which she said during her press conference that Ostapenko would have to answer if there were “racial undertones” to the altercation.
Ostapenko said on Instagram later that her anger stemmed from Townsend’s refusal to apologize after winning a point at a pivotal moment when her ball clipped the net and stayed in play, as she accused the American of being “disrespectful.”
Apologizing for winning a point with assistance from the net cord is a tradition that most players adhere to it, but they are not obliged to do so.
The Latvian added in another statement that she had never been racist in her life, but Osaka said the words Ostapenko chose during the altercation were in bad taste.
“It’s one of the worst things you can say to a Black tennis player in a majority white sport,” four-times Grand Slam winner Osaka said.
“I know Taylor and I know how hard she’s worked and I know how smart she is, so she’s the furthest thing from uneducated or anything like that.”
Champion advocate
Osaka, born to a Japanese mother and Haitian father, has been an outspoken supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement both in the United States, where she resides, and in Japan. She was a champion advocate for the campaign during her run to the 2020 Flushing Meadows title.
The 27-year-old had used her platform to highlight racial injustice in the United States to a wider audience by wearing a different face mask – each bearing the name of an African American who had been killed in recent years – before each one of her seven matches.
“If you’re like genuinely asking me about the history of Ostapenko, I don’t think that’s the craziest thing she’s said. I’m going to be honest,” Osaka continued with a smile.
“I think it’s ill timing and the worst person you could have ever said it to. And I don’t know if she knows the history of it in America.
“I know she’s never going to say that ever again in her life. But yeah, it was just terrible. That’s just really bad.”
American Coco Gauff waded into the debate, saying although Ostapenko should not have said what she said, it was a “heat of the moment” thing.
“I know what was said after the match,” said Gauff, another vocal advocate for social issues including racial justice.
“It was a heat of the moment thing. Jelena was probably feeling emotions after she lost. I do think that shouldn’t have been said regardless of how you’re feeling ... Knowing Taylor personally, she’s the opposite of that.
Gauff said that Townsend was one of the nicest people she knew and hoped people would now make an effort to find out more about her.
“Maybe this is the first people are hearing who Taylor is, and I don’t want that to be the main focus of who she is because she’s a lot more than that.
“She’s a mother, a great friend, a talented tennis player and a good person. At the end of this tournament I hope people do a deep dive into her and get to know her more than what was said in the previous match.”

  • Shan Masood and Abdullah Shafique steady Pakistan with unbeaten 60-run stand before lunch
  • Off-spinner Simon Harmer gives South Africa only breakthrough after Imam-ul-Haq’s early dismissal

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan were well placed on 95-1 at lunch on the opening day of the second and final Test against South Africa in Rawalpindi on Monday.

Opener Abdullah Shafique lived dangerously in reaching 37 and with him Shan Masood was on 38 after Pakistan won the toss on another spin-friendly pitch at Rawalpindi stadium.

The skipper Masood batted aggressively, hitting three sixes and a four, while Shafique scored four fours as the duo made 60 for the unbeaten second wicket.

South Africa’s only breakthrough came by off-spinner Simon Harmer, who bowled Imam-ul-Haq for 17 with a sharp turner that beat the bat and hit off-stump.

Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada initially swung the new ball but saw Tristan Stubbs drop Shafique in the slips off the fourth ball of the match for nought.

Having won the first Test in Lahore by 93 runs, Pakistan strengthened their attack by including a third spinner in Asif Afridi, dropping fast bowler Hasan Ali.

At 38 years and 299 days, Asif becomes the second oldest Pakistani Test debutant, behind Miran Bakhsh, who made his debut at 47 years and 284 days against India in 1955.

South Africa included experienced spinner Keshav Maharaj, who missed the first Test with injury, and added Marco Jansen to partner Rabada in the pace attack.

  • FIA president praises Paris Basketball Foundation for joining UAOA campaign to shield athletes, officials, volunteers, fans from digital harm

DUBAI: FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem says the backing of the influential Paris Basketball Foundation for the United Against Online Abuse campaign has provided another boost in the global fight against digital harm in sport.

The Paris Basketball Foundation supports projects linked to sport, education, health and mental health, and environment and solidarity, making them a natural partner for the UAOA coalition.

Ben Sulayem, the UAOA founder, said: “Sport has the power to unite, inspire and shape values. To preserve that integrity, we must eliminate online abuse and ensure that respect remains at the heart of every competition.

“Through the United Against Online Abuse coalition, we are building a global movement to shield athletes, officials, volunteers and fans from digital harm, and to champion mental health across every sport. I applaud Paris Basketball and its foundation for standing with us to safeguard respect, inclusion and fairness both on and off the court.”

The foundation signed the campaign’s charter during a basketball match staged as part of France’s Mental Health Information Weeks, reaffirming its commitment to a safe and respectful environment for youth, an essential issue in the digital age.

It also hosted workshops and events to provide young athletes with tools to better manage stress, anxiety and performance.

Willem Groenewald, FIA secretary-general for automobile mobility and sustainability, said: “Online abuse can have a profound impact on the mental health of young people, athletes and fans alike.

“Through the United Against Online Abuse campaign, the FIA is working hand in hand with partners like Paris Basketball to build a safer, more inclusive sporting environment for everyone.

“Winning this battle requires a collective global approach — uniting sport, technology, governments and academia behind a shared mission. We are proud to welcome the club and its foundation to this global coalition and to stand united for respect and mental health in sport.”

Founded in 2023 by Ben Sulayem, the UAOA campaign is a research-led coalition supported by the FIA Foundation. It has witnessed rapid growth in recent months and was recently awarded Peace and Sport’s prestigious Coalition for Peace Award.

Uniting international sport federations and organizations, national governments and technology platforms, UAOA is dedicated to fostering behavioral change through education and research.

Dubai Basketball maintain perfect start to ABA League season
  • The 81-77 win over U-BT Cluj-Napoca at Coca-Cola Arena means Dubai have won all 3 opening matches in the competition

DUBAI: Dubai Basketball continued their unbeaten run in the ABA League with a hard-fought 81-77 victory over newcomers U-BT Cluj-Napoca from Romania at Coca-Cola Arena on Sunday.

Following strong performances in their debut EuroLeague campaign, the city’s first home basketball club once again demonstrated composure and depth to remain flawless across competitions.

The matchup against Cluj-Napoca was closely contested despite Dubai controlling the pace for most of the game. Late in the fourth quarter, the Romanian side mounted a strong comeback led by Dusan Miletic but Dubai maintained focus in the final minutes to secure the win.

Head Coach Jurica Golemac praised the team and fans: “Today we were expecting a very difficult game, and that’s what happened. We needed energy after the week that took us out.

“We found that the crowd was what was giving us the energy again, with our fans helping us in the most crucial moments. Again, one more time, we won the game with defense, with strong energy and physicality.”

Mfiondu Kabengele once again led with a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds, anchoring Dubai on both ends of the floor. McKinley Wright added 11 points in a standout performance, while Sertac Sanli contributed 10.

Making his debut for Dubai Basketball, Sanli was credited with turning the game around in a tied-up final quarter. “We didn’t play well the whole game, but we showed good hustle, especially in the second half, and managed to get the win.”

“I know that game by game, I’ll get better — I’ll understand my teammates more, understand the coach better, and grow with the team. We still have a long way to go, but I believe we’ll keep improving every game.”

Dubai Basketball will have a two-week away stint with their next match against LDLC ASVEL in Lyon. At home they will play ABA League reigning champions Partizan on Nov. 3 at Coca-Cola Arena.

Liverpool star Salah should not be automatic starter in away games, says Carragher
  • Egyptian forward has been way below his record-breaking form from last season’s campaign
  • Salah squandered a golden opportunity to score in Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat by Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday

Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah’s form has dipped to such an extent that he should not be considered an automatic starter away from home, former defender Jamie Carragher said after the Premier League champions suffered a fourth consecutive defeat.
The 33-year-old Egyptian forward, who signed a two-year contract extension in April, has been way below his record-breaking form from last season’s campaign and has gone seven matches without a non-penalty goal.
Salah squandered a golden opportunity to score in Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat by Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday and Carragher said he should not be one of the first names on the team sheet like captain Virgil van Dijk.
“Liverpool have got two away games — in the Champions League at Frankfurt and then they go to Brentford. I don’t think Salah should start both of those games,” Carragher told Sky Sports.
“He should always start at Anfield because Liverpool will be on top, around the edge of the box and more often than not he scores in those situations today.
“But I do think in the away games and helping your full-back, I don’t think Salah should be starting every game right now, certainly away from home, with the form he’s in.”
Liverpool came into Sunday’s game on the back of league defeats by Crystal Palace and Chelsea, and a Champions League loss to Galatasaray.
Their poor run comes despite splashing out £446 million ($600 million) in the close-season transfer window and Carragher said manager Arne Slot should build the team around Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz.
“It has to be Isak and Wirtz because they’ve spent the money on them and their age profile compared to Salah,” Carragher said.
Liverpool are fourth in the league on 15 points from eight matches, four behind leaders Arsenal.

Mbappe gives Madrid 1-0 win after Getafe player is sent off after less than a minute on the field
  • The hard-fought victory moved Madrid back on top of the Spanish league, two points ahead of Barcelona, who beat last-placed Girona 2-1 with a stoppage-time goal by Ronald Araujo
  • Jorge de Frutos scored two first-half goals as Rayo Vallecano won 3-0 at Levante for their third straight win across all competitions

MADRID: Real Madrid took advantage of a red card for a Getafe player who stayed less than a minute on the field to win 1-0 with an 80th-minute goal by Kylian Mbappe on Sunday.

The hard-fought victory moved Madrid back on top of the Spanish league, two points ahead of Barcelona, who beat last-placed Girona 2-1 with a stoppage-time goal by Ronald Araujo on Saturday.

Mbappe’s league-leading 10th goal of the season came shortly after host Getafe went a man down because of a straight red card shown to Allan Nyom about 40 seconds after he came off the bench.

Nyom fouled Real Madrid forward Vinícius Junior away from the ball as Madrid started to build a breakaway in the 77th.

Madrid, who had been struggling to create significant scoring chances, took advantage of the sending off and Mbappe scored with a shot from inside the area after a nice through ball by Arda Güler.

Mbappe has scored in 13 of the 14 games he played this season for club and country. He has scored at least once in 11 straight matches.

“We’re very pleased with how Kylian is doing,” Madrid coach Xabi Alonso said. “He’s been decisive with his goals and his involvement. Goals give you points, but we need everyone because there’s a lot going on in the background.”

Getafe went another man down four minutes later when Alex Sancris was shown a second yellow card for another foul on Vinícius.

Despite playing with nine men, Getafe nearly equalized in stoppage time, with Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois charging from the net to make a difficult close-range save to a shot by Abu Kamara inside the area.

“That missed chance by Kamara was a pity,” Getafe coach José Bordalas said. “Nyom’s red card made the difference. For me that’s not a red card, at most a yellow.”

Bordalas criticized Vinícius, claiming the Brazil forward provoked him by saying something to the effect of “good job making the substitution” to include Nyom in the match.

Getafe, who had only one attempt on target, stayed in 12th place. They have a five-game winless streak.

Madrid have won 10 of their 11 games in all tournaments this season, with their lone setback a league loss at Atletico Madrid last month.

Just like at the other league matches this weekend, players stood still for the first 15 seconds of the game in opposition to La Liga’s plan to hold the Barcelona-Villarreal game in the US on Dec. 20.

De Frutos leads Rayo

Jorge de Frutos scored two first-half goals as Rayo Vallecano won 3-0 at Levante for their third straight win across all competitions.

De Frutos, a former Levante player, scored in the 12th and 25th minutes, and Alvaro García sealed the victory in the 65th.

Rayo were coming off another road win in the league against Real Sociedad, and they had beaten Shkendija 2-0 at home in the Europa League.

Levante have won only one of their last four league matches.

Sociedad and Celta still struggling

Real Sociedad needed an 89th-minute goal by Carlos Soler to draw 1-1 at 10-man Celta Vigo, extending both teams’ poor start to the season.

Sociedad, sitting in 18th, have only one win in nine league matches, with five losses and three draws. The Basque Country team’s only win was against Mallorca.

Celta, who had defender Carl Starfelt sent off with a second yellow card in first-half stoppage time, opened the scoring with Pablo Duran in the 20th.

In 17th place, Celta remain the only team without a league win after nine rounds. They have seven draws and two losses.

Simon save Athletic

Athletic Bilbao needed a solid performance by Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon to salvage a 0-0 draw at promoted Elche.

The result kept seventh-placed Elche tied with eighth-placed Athletic on 14 points.
