  • Ngumoha broke Newcastle’s hearts shortly after coming off the bench, thrashing in the winner with a first-time right-foot shot in the 10th minute of stoppage time to become Liverpool’s youngest ever scorer
  • It was a sickening blow for Newcastle who were again without outcast striker Isak, but who began the game in superb fashion

NEWCASTLE, England: The absent Alexander Isak dominated the buildup to Newcastle United’s clash at home to Liverpool but the Swede was temporarily forgotten in a rip-roaring contest that ended 3-2 to the reigning champions thanks to a stoppage-time winner by teenaged Premier League debutant Rio Ngumoha.

Isak’s desire to leave Newcastle, with Liverpool his destination of choice, guaranteed a boisterous St. James’ Park atmosphere and it seemed Arne Slot’s visitors had buckled as they threw away a flattering 2-0 lead against a side reduced to 10 men by Anthony Gordon’s red card in first-half stoppage time.

But 16-year-old Ngumoha broke Newcastle’s hearts shortly after coming off the bench, thrashing in the winner with a first-time right-foot shot in the 10th minute of stoppage time to become Liverpool’s youngest ever scorer and the fourth youngest in Premier League history.

It was a sickening blow for Newcastle who were again without outcast striker Isak, but who began the game in superb fashion.

Even when the red mist and fate had dealt them multiple blows they still showed great resilience to fight back but it all counted for nothing in the end.

“We know there was a lot of oil on the fire this week to get Newcastle fired up,” Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk said.

“I enjoy these type of atmospheres, so I was really looking forward to it but we could’ve made it easier. We gave them the boost and the feeling and the drive with the fans behind them but we managed to get the three points and move on.”

Liverpool had been forced to soak up Newcastle pressure for half an hour and had made little headway but took the lead completely against the run of play when Ryan Gravenberch cut in from the left and dispatched a low shot just inside Nick Pope’s post in the 35th minute.

Rash tackle

Newcastle’s frustration got the better of Gordon who was sent off in first-half stoppage time for a rash tackle that left stud marks on the back of van Dijk’s calf – his initial yellow card being upgraded to a red by referee Simon Hooper.

And when Hugo Ekitike, who Newcastle had wanted to sign possibly as a replacement for Isak, struck 20 seconds after the break with the sort of clinical side-foot finish that makes you wonder whether Liverpool even require more strikers, it looked all over for the hosts.

It was a curiously lethargic display by Liverpool though with Mohamed Salah unusually quiet and when Bruno Guimaraes headed past Alisson in the 57th minute the noise levels rose and Newcastle were re-energized.

Liverpool completely lost control of the game and were punished in the 88th minute as William Osula seized on defensive hesitation to nip onto a long punt forward by Pope and slot a close-range finish past Alisson.

Despite being a man down and suffering injuries to Sandro Tonali, Joelinton and Fabian Schar it looked like Newcastle might grab an unlikely win but Ngumoha struck in fairytale fashion to make it two wins from two games for Liverpool.

They join Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur on six points while Newcastle, who will be desperate to settle the Isak saga before the closure of the transfer window next week, have one point from their opening two games.

“Second half we had a mountain to climb at 2-0 down with 10 men but I thought we controlled the game,” Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said. “I thought we were really good and fought our way back unbelievably well but couldn’t get over the line.”

Howe opted not to comment on reports that Newcastle’s Saudi hierarchy had flown in for talks with Isak in a bid to resolve a saga that has been running since Liverpool had a bid of more than €100 million ($135.09 million) rejected for the player who has scored 54 goals in 86 Premier League games for Newcastle.

“We hope that we can bring players in,” Howe said. “We have been trying throughout the window, especially in the forward positions.”

  • “TSV 1860 Munich will strive for a full investigation into this incident and will hold the spectator accountable using all available means,” the club said
  • The game resumed after an interruption of about 10 minutes

MUNICH: German third-division club 1860 Munich have apologized after one of their fans racially abused Energie Cottbus forward Justin Butler during a league match between the teams on Saturday.
“TSV 1860 Munich will strive for a full investigation into this incident and will hold the spectator accountable using all available means,” the club said in a statement.
The game was almost called off after Butler was subjected to monkey chants from a person among the 1860 fans. The club said players from both teams, stewards and other fans helped identify the alleged perpetrator, who was handed over to police.
The incident was addressed by the stadium announcer and 1860 supporters chanted “Nazis out!” while play was suspended. The game resumed after an interruption of about 10 minutes.
Referee Konrad Oldhafer said Butler informed him that he had been targeted by someone making monkey noises.
“I didn’t hear them myself,” Oldhafer told broadcaster MagentaSport. “I immediately made it clear to the player that we were taking it very seriously.”
Oldhafer said he spoke with both captains and with Butler, who is Black. The referee said he asked Butler – after they were told the alleged perpetrator was found and removed from the stadium – whether he felt he could continue the game. He resumed it when Butler said he could.
“It’s appalling,” Bulter’s teammate Axel Borgmann said in comments reported by news agency dpa.
“I asked Justin, and he confirmed it. It’s sad that this keeps coming up. … It happens again and again, which is sad and regrettable. I’m glad the fan was identified and removed from the stadium.”

  • WTA Finals features the top eight singles players and doubles teams in the world

RIYADH: World No. 2 Iga Swiatek began her quest for a second WTA Finals trophy with a 6-1 6-2 win over Australian Open champion Madison Keys in their round robin clash at the season-ending championships on Saturday.

The 2023 champion made a fast start in the Riyadh showpiece, winning 12 of the first 14 points to take a 3-0 lead as a rusty Keys struggled to find rhythm on serve in her first match since a stunning US Open first-round defeat in late August.

Swiatek continued to pile the pressure on her American opponent, who looked out of sorts in her first appearance in the season finale since her debut in 2016, and the Pole raced away to take the opening set dropping only one game.

The pair swapped breaks at the start of the second set, but an untimely double fault from Keys handed the advantage back to Swiatek, who made no mistake from there to wrap up the victory on serve in only 61 minutes.

The WTA Finals, which features the top eight singles players and doubles teams in the world, has a record prize pool of $15.5 million and offers 1,500 points. The tournament culminates with the finals at King Saud University Sports Arena on Nov. 8.

On Sunday, the top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka will begin her bid for a maiden WTA Finals title when the Belarusian takes on two-times major finalist Jasmine Paolini of Italy in the Steffi Graf Group before holder Coco Gauff meets fellow American Jessica Pegula.

Unlike in the previous two editions of the tournament, the year-end world No. 1 ranking will not be up for grabs with US Open champion Sabalenka assured of finishing on top after building a 1,675-point lead over Swiatek heading to Riyadh.

Elsewhere, Canadian ninth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime boosted his chances of qualifying for the season-ending ATP Finals with a 7-6(3) 6-4 victory over Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik in the semifinals of the Paris Masters on Saturday.

The US Open semifinalist leapfrogged Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti to eighth place in the ATP Race to Turin standings and could secure his second ATP Finals appearance after 2022 if he wins Sunday’s final.

The 25-year-old will face either four-time Grand Slam champion Jannik Sinner or world No. 3 Alexander Zverev in the title showdown.

“I’m so happy. A Masters 1000 final sounds so good. You don’t play those finals every week. Hopefully, I can go all the way and get the title,” Auger-Aliassime said.

“But in terms of today, you get into a Masters and every match is tough ... You’re always kind of curious to see how your game is going to match up.

“I have deep self-confidence in my game; I know what I can do against the best players in the world but you still have to go and execute. Today I did really well and I’m happy with the result.”

The opening set was a serving clinic from both players, with neither conceding a break or even a break point. Locked at 6-6, the set went to a tiebreak, where Auger-Aliassime seized a 4-2 lead and closed it out comfortably.

In a scrappy second set, 13th seed Bublik started brightly, breaking Auger-Aliassime early to take a 2-0 lead. However, the Canadian world No. 10 responded immediately by breaking back, drawing frustration from Bublik, who smashed his racket.

Bublik recovered to take a 4-1 lead, but Auger-Aliassime came to life, reeling off five straight games to seal his place in the final in one hour and 36 minutes.

Supreme Bayern crush Leverkusen 3-0 to stretch record winning run
  • They extended their record run in Europe’s top five leagues to 15 wins on the trot
  • Leverkusen suffered their first league loss under coach Kasper Hjulmand

MUNICH: Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich bagged three goals in 19 minutes in a rampant first half to power past visitors Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 on Saturday and stretch their record-extending run to 15 wins from 15 matches across all competitions this season.
Goals from Serge Gnabry and Nicolas Jackson and an own goal from Loic Bade in the 44th minute gave Bayern, who rested top scorer Harry Kane, Michael Olize and Luis Diaz in the first half ahead of next week’s trip to reigning champions Paris St. Germain in the Champions League, an easy victory.
They extended their record run in Europe’s top five leagues to 15 wins on the trot after setting a record on Wednesday with a 4-1 win over Cologne in the German Cup second round, improving on AC Milan’s 13 straight wins from 1992/3. Bayern are in top spot on 27 points, five ahead of RB Leipzig.
Leverkusen suffered their first league loss under coach Kasper Hjulmand and saw their record-breaking undefeated run on the road end after 37 league matches and more than two seasons, with their previous away defeat in the league dating back to May 27 2023.
The hosts set a frantic early pace, putting Leverkusen under instant and relentless pressure and with in-form teenager Lennart Karl coming close early on.
They opened their account with a textbook three-touch attack from keeper Manuel Neuer to scorer Gnabry, who finished the move with a low shot in the 25th minute.
Before Leverkusen had time to regroup, the hosts struck again with Jackson bagging his first Bundesliga goal with a header from a Konrad Laimer cross in the 31st. Bade’s own goal from a Raphael Guerreiro cutback crowned a dominant first half for the hosts and killed off the game.
Jackson headed over the bar from close range in the 50th and Guerreiro fired just wide a little later, with Bayern introducing Kane, Diaz and Olize on the hour but failing to score again.

LONDON: Chelsea beat hosts Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 in the Premier League on Saturday with Brazil striker Joao Pedro scoring the only goal of the game and getting back on the scoresheet for the first time since August.
Enzo Maresca’s men, stung by last weekend’s home defeat by Sunderland, took the lead when Moises Caicedo stole the ball from Micky van de Ven and squared for Joao Pedro who made no mistake from eight meters in the 34th minute.
Chelsea climbed to fourth place in the table on 17 points after 10 games, one rung below Spurs on goal difference.
Spurs have now registered just one win against Chelsea in their last 14 Premier League meetings.

10-man Al-Ittihad stage stunning 4-goal comeback to draw with Al-Khaleej

JEDDAH: Al-Ittihad produced a remarkable comeback on Saturday night, fighting back from four goals down with 10 men to draw 4-4 against Al-Khaleej in one of the most dramatic matches of the Saudi Pro League season.

The evening began disastrously for the reigning champions, who conceded twice in the opening 18 minutes.

Matters worsened in the 31st minute when midfielder Fabinho was shown a red card, leaving Sergio Conceicao’s side with 10 men for over an hour.

Al-Khaleej capitalized quickly, netting twice in the 37th and 47th minutes to give the hosts a seemingly unassailable 4-0 lead.

Diaby pulled one back for the champions early in the second half, but it appeared to be little more than a consolation.

Then, in a stunning finale, Diaby scored again in the 86th minute before Al-Ittihad mounted an extraordinary late surge, scoring another two through Mario Mitaj and Faisal Al-Ghamdi in the 96th and 98th minutes to complete a dramatic turnaround and snatch an unlikely draw.
