  • Kingdom鈥檚 Foreign Ministry 鈥榗ategorically rejects鈥 any actions that threaten security and safety of civilians and humanitarian workers
  • The Muslim World League also strongly condemns the attack on the aid convoy

RIYADH: 海角直播 on Thursday condemned an attack the previous day on a World Food Program aid convoy in the North Darfur region of Sudan.

Three trucks caught fire when the 16-vehicle convoy was targeted on Wednesday as it attempted to deliver aid to a famine-hit area north of El-Fasher.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry said the Kingdom categorically rejected 鈥渁nything that threatens the security and safety of civilians and relief and humanitarian workers.鈥

It added: 鈥淭he Kingdom calls on all Sudanese parties to adhere to what was signed in the Jeddah Declaration on May 11, 2023, including the commitment to protect civilians and ensure the security of relief and humanitarian aid corridors.鈥

The Muslim World League (MWL) also strongly condemned the attack, describing it as 鈥渁 grave violation of religious values and international laws at a time when the Sudanese people are suffering the consequences and devastation of war,鈥 state news agency SPA reported.

An MWL statement called on parties to abide with the provisions of the Jeddah Declaration signed on May 2023, including the protection of civilians and the security of humanitarian corridor, as well as prioritize 鈥渆ffective and serious dialogue鈥 to reach a political solution to the conflict in Sudan.

The Jedah Declaration, brokered by the Kingdom and the US, was agreed by the two main sides in the civil war, the Sudanese Armed Forces and rival militia the Rapid Support Forces, in May 2023, shortly after the conflict began.

The declaration included assurances by both sides that they would allow the unimpeded movement and delivery of humanitarian assistance throughout Sudan.

The conflict, which began in April 2023 and continues to rage, sparked one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. North Darfur has been the scene of some of the worst fighting, and as a result more than a million people there are on the brink of starvation. Across the country, 25 million people face acute hunger.

  • Twins share a lower chest, abdomen, liver, intestines
  • Surgery to take 9 hours, says Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah

RIYADH: The medical team of the Saudi Conjoined Twins Program in Riyadh began the separation of Jamaican 2-year-olds Azaria and Azura Elson at the King Abdullah Specialized Children鈥檚 Hospital on Thursday.

A member of the program told Arab News the operation began in the morning.

In a statement, Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, who heads the surgical team, said the children arrived in the Kingdom on July 28. Al-Rabeeah is also an adviser at the royal court and leads the Kingdom鈥檚 aid agency KSrelief.

The twins share a lower chest, abdomen and liver, and possibly also intestines and pericardium, Al-Rabeeah said.

One of the children has significant congenital defects and a weakened heart muscle, with its pumping capacity at only 20 percent. This increases the risk of the surgery.

Al-Rabeeah said he had explained the situation to their mother and she had agreed to the operation.

He explained that the medical team decided to place balloons under the skin to stretch it, which would allow the surgical team to cover the gap after separation.

Al-Rabeeah stated that the operation is expected to take about nine hours in six stages, involving 25 staff members in the fields of nursing, anesthesia, pediatric surgery, and plastic surgery.

Al-Rabeeah said this was the 67th operation conducted by the program, which has cared for 152 sets of twins from 28 countries over more than 35 years.

He praised his team and thanked the nation鈥檚 leaders King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for their support.
