  • Ambassador highlights close ties with ֱ and the role played by Indian diaspora in reinforcing those ties

RIYADH: The Embassy of India in Riyadh and the Consulate General in Jeddah celebrated India’s 79th Independence Day on Friday with great enthusiasm and active participation from the Indian community, local dignitaries, and friends of India.

Independence Day was celebrated by the embassy in Riyadh with the enthusiastic participation of about 1,000 people, including members of the Indian community, embassy officials, and journalists.

The celebrations began with the hoisting of the tricolour by Dr. Suhel Ajaz Khan, the ambassador, followed by the national anthem.

The ambassador lay floral tributes at the bust of father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi, then read out President Droupadi Murmu’s message to the nation and Indians around the world.

In his keynote address, the ambassador highlighted the close bilateral partnership between India and ֱ and the significant role played by the Indian diaspora in making this relationship vibrant and robust.

It was followed by cultural performances by Indian community members, displaying the rich diversity of India. The cultural program was an eclectic mix of patriotic songs and classical dance performances.

In the run-up to Independence Day, embassy officials, their families and Indian community members took part in the “Har Ghar Tiranga” initiative, displaying their patriotic spirit and pride in the national flag.

At the Indian Consulate in Jeddah the ceremony began with the hoisting of the national flag by Consul General Fahad Ahmed Khan Suri followed by the national anthem, with the consul general reading the president’s address to the nation, which highlighted India’s accomplishments over the past 78 years and outlined the country’s vision.

The consul general highlighted the growing partnership with ֱ and commended the Indian diaspora in the Western Province for their pivotal role in fostering stronger ties and contributing positively to both countries.

He also provided updates on the consulate’s key initiatives and urged the diaspora to continue their active engagement in advancing these efforts.

The celebration featured a cultural program including patriotic songs performed by students from Indian schools in Jeddah that evoked pride, unity, and respect for the county’s history and cultural heritage.

A highlight of the event was the Tiranga Exhibition, organized as part of the government of India’s “Har Ghar Tiranga” campaign. The exhibition included historical images, creative displays, and information about the Indian national flag — promoting awareness, respect, and national pride among attendees.

The event concluded with a display of regional Indian cuisines, giving guests a flavourful glimpse into India’s rich and diverse food heritage. Each dish, representing different states, highlighted the country’s remarkable cultural diversity and unity.

  • Noor Nugali, assistant editor-in-chief of Arab News, moderates talk
  • Construction, health, trade, logistics on the agenda at ‘China Night’

RIYADH: Business leaders from China and ֱ say cooperation between the two countries is entering a new phase, driven by technology transfer, joint innovation and large-scale infrastructure projects.

They were speaking during a panel discussion at ewpartners’ “China Night” in Riyadh on Wednesday evening, with Arab News is a media partner.

Noor Nugali, Arab News’ assistant editor-in-chief, moderated the discussion.

Aces CEO Akram Aburas said that China has become an important reference point for the Kingdom as it undertakes massive development projects.

“In ֱ now, obviously everybody knows that we are going to make larger scale projects in construction, airport facilities, and healthcare facilities,” he said.

“China is a very good role model for us, because when it comes to China, any project implemented there is usually implemented on a massive scale and high-tech scale. It means that you have a robust, you have a very strong system installation base.

“It’s very good to get some of these technologies and implement them in ֱ … the potential success, is extremely high once we use it in Saudi.”

Aburas said the perception of Chinese technology has shifted dramatically over the past decade, with China now recognized for its large-scale deployment and technological maturity.

“We have to admit, and we have to realize the Chinese technology is an age of technology. The perception 10 years ago doesn’t exist,” he said.

“China has massive installations, they have massive deployment and massive investment in terms of technology.”

He noted that as a ֱ operator responsible for managing large infrastructure projects, such work demands extensive technological integration and large-scale system deployment.

Aburas also discussed how ֱ firms are starting to co-develop intellectual property with Chinese partners under government-supported initiatives.

“We are capitalizing our installation, but also our technical knowledge, with the support of the government to create an IP. And then we approach multiple technology partners, partnered with China, and now we start using for our own but also go (to) the international market.”

Hawk Xu, Leshine’s CEO and CTO of Lenovo Supply Chain, said ֱ’s geographic position makes it one of the world’s most strategic gateways for global trade and logistics.

“If you look at physical locations, definitely, it’s sitting almost at the center of Asia Pacific, GCC, and even for Europe.”

“So we believe the global trade is offering, I think, more opportunities for global supply chains, and also definitely as logistics for cross ordering … So this is definitely one of our most important strategic countries, a market we will focus (on) and we committed to continue the best.”

Xu noted that companies from across East Asia are increasingly drawn to the Kingdom’s industrial and green technology ambitions.

“We hope to bring our capabilities here and empower more companies to root here, to grow up here, and also to, really, I think, get more business here,” he said. “The green energy and also recycling economy are also key focuses for us.”

Cliff Chau, managing partner at ewpartners, emphasized the pace of China’s progress in healthcare and pharmaceutical development, describing how rapid innovation has reshaped the sector over the past decade.

“I would say that in the last 10 years, we narrowed the gap between China and US very quickly. Ten years ago, China healthcare, service, standards, equipment, pharmaceutical, (were) probably 20 years behind the US. Today, in some areas, we are ahead of the US.”

“So I understand that healthcare industry is a big thing here too, to extend the longevity of people, to prevent diseases. And I think the healthcare will have a big opportunity in this country too.”

He said that China’s progress was driven by policy support and the return of internationally trained experts.

“That’s one big important factor, is talent infusion and policy driven. And I think the two, second factor, is the kind of the China speed.”

  • Physicians, investors and other decision-makers gathered to bring the best solutions for the future of healthcare in ֱ

RIYADH: As ֱ continues to develop its healthcare sector, questions remain over how health practitioners can keep up with growing challenges and secure a healthy society.

During the eighth edition of the Global Health Conference in Riyadh on Wednesday, various discussions around the topic were presented.

Physicians, investors and other decision-makers gathered to bring the best solutions for the future of healthcare in ֱ.

Dr. Walid Ftehi, founder, chairman of the board and CEO of International Medical Center, spoke to Arab News about what he called “a holistic concept of medicine.”

He said: “When I came back from the States, I wanted to make sure I would raise the level of healthcare and introduce the holistic concept of medicine.

“That is why our mission from day number one (was) to pioneer a unique approach of healing the mind, body and soul by applying the best global healthcare standards and pursuing divine ethics.”

For Ftehi, it is critical to pay attention to the body as a whole (the mind, the body and the soul) and not only to physical aspects.

He spoke about how ֱ’s Vision 2030 is improving understanding of healthcare and focusing on core values such as prevention, health promotion and the encouragement of a healthy lifestyle.

“More than 90 percent of (diseases) are nothing but a result of our own choices in life,” he said.

“If we change the lifestyle of people: What they eat, what they do, what they drink, how (they) think, how they feel, then you get to take care of more than 80 to 90 percent of the diseases, the chronic diseases: obesity, diabetes and hypertension.”

Dr. Ashraf Amir, chief medical officer at IMC, echoed his sentiments, and highlighted the importance of prevention over treatment to overcome health challenges in the country.

“It’s very important to highlight the strategic directions that we are implementing through our Vision 2030 and the wonderful transformation of our healthcare system to adapt a new concept in our practice as a physician toward quality of life,” Amir told Arab News.

“So, we are now moving from intervention to prevention, from disease to health, from illness to wellness.

“Now, as a physician, I’m not only here to treat the disease, but also to prevent the disease and, moreover, to improve the quality of life of our patients.”

He also discussed the Ministry of Health’s goals to extend the life expectancy of the Kingdom’s population.

“A couple of years ago, (life expectancy) was 76, and our objective in the Ministry of Health to be achieved as a KPI by the year 2045 is 80 years of age.

“How far (have we gone) to be successful in this journey? We reached today, 79 years.”
