  • Hosts 海角直播 lose out to highly rated China in the opening game of the basketball competition; in the other game in Group C, Jordan hold off India
  • In Group D, New Zealand record a comfortable victory over Iraq, while Chinese Taipei shock the Philippines

JEDDAH: Basketball fans were treated to four thrilling encounters on the opening day of the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup in Jeddah on Tuesday, as 16 teams begin their quest for glory at the 31st staging of the competition.

Hosts 海角直播 lost 88-93 to China, who are the most decorated team in the history of the tournament, with 16 titles to their name.

Despite the disappointment, coach Ricard Casas praised the Saudi players for their performance saying: 鈥淭hey really played well and showed their character against China, which is considered one of the best basketball teams in Asia.

鈥淪till, we have two more games and hopefully we can qualify for the quarter finals.鈥

The Kingdom鈥檚 shooting guard, Mohammed Abdurahkman who plays for Spanish team Club Basket Bilbao Berri, said the team did their best but luck was not on their side.

鈥淲e had a tough game with China but it is important for us to come back and win the next games against India and Jordan,鈥 he added.

In the other game in Group C, Jordanian forward Hashem Abbas came through for his team when they needed him most as Jordan held off India in overtime to win 91-84.

海角直播 will take on Jordan on Thursday, while India faces China.

In Group D, New Zealand, nicknamed the 鈥淭all Blacks,鈥 recorded a comfortable 100-78 win over Iraq and have their sights set on going all the way.

鈥淥ur focus is to finish as high as we can on the podium,鈥 said head coach Judd Flavell. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a tough tournament and our pool is tough. If we鈥檙e going to be our best, these teams will expose areas for improvement.鈥

Chinese Taipei and the Philippines lined up for the final game of the day, which attracted an impressive crowd that saw former come from behind to shock the latter with a 95-87 victory.

The Chinese face Iraq on Thursday, while the Philippines will need a win against New Zealand to keep their hopes alive.

The lineup of games on Wednesday is: title holders Australia vs. South Korea, Japan vs. Syria, Guam vs. Iran, and Qatar vs. Lebanon.

Scottie Scheffler captures 6th tour win this year, 19th for career, at Procore

Scottie Scheffler shot 5-under-par 67 and it was enough for a one-stroke victory in the Procore Championship on Sunday at Napa, California, proving to be a valuable tune-up for the Ryder Cup.
Scheffler finished the tournament at 19-under 269, with second- and third- round leader Ben Griffin posting 70 in the final round and ending up at 18 under on Silverado Resort鈥檚 North Course.
鈥淚鈥檓 fortunate to be the winner this week,鈥 Scheffler said.
Griffin missed a birdie putt from about 6 feet away on the final hole that would have forced a playoff.
鈥淚 gave myself a good chance,鈥 Griffin said. 鈥淚 was trying to make eagle, putt was just a little slower than I expected. I don鈥檛 know if I hit my line on the last, but I looked up and it looked like it was breaking pretty good to the left and I tried to play it straighter to right center.鈥
Griffin and Scheffler, who was in the pairing in front of Griffin, were even at 18 under until Scheffler鈥檚 bogey on No. 11. Scheffler had birdies on Nos. 12 and 15, while Griffin鈥檚 string of nine consecutive pars was broken with a bogey on the par-4 No. 14 and a birdie on the next hole, a par-5.
鈥淚 was chasing down some pretty talented guys on the leaderboard,鈥 Scheffler said.

It marks Scheffler鈥檚 19th victory on the tour, though his first in California. Six of those have come in 2025, so he joins Tiger Woods as the only givers with at least six victories in back-to-back seasons since 1983.
Griffin was trying to join Scheffler and Rory McIlroy as the only golfers with three or more PGA Tour victories in 2025. His 11 top-10 finishes this year are only behind Scheffler on that list.
Griffin birdied the first three holes to extend his lead, which was at one stroke over amateur Jackson Koivun entering the round.
鈥淎nytime you finish second, it sucks, but I鈥檓 so grateful to be playing golf,鈥 Griffin said. 鈥淪o grateful to have opportunities down the stretch. I just need to execute a little bit better.鈥
Lanto Griffin鈥檚 65 marked the best score of the day and it elevated him to third place. Koivun (71), a junior at Auburn, and Argentina鈥檚 Emiliano Grillo (66) tied for fourth place at 16 under.
J.J. Spaun (66), who like Scheffler and Ben Griffin is headed to the Ryder Cup later this month, was sixth at 15 under.
Lanto Griffin鈥檚 rise came courtesy of playing Sunday鈥檚 first eight holes in 6 under. After a bogey on No. 9, he chipped in front of the greenside rough for a birdie on the par-4 13th and also made birdie at No. 16.
鈥淔or whatever reason I hit some really close iron shots,鈥 Lanto Griffin said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 kind of one of those things, you鈥檙e 6 under through eight and you鈥檙e trying to just not even think about it.鈥
The outcome moved Lanto Griffin into the top 100 in the overall standings for the year.
鈥淚 feel really comfortable with what I鈥檓 working on in my swing that鈥檚 right, so getting a really good finish and being able to go home and get back to work on that is exciting,鈥 he said.

  • Game聽ended on a bitter note as Indian players headed into their dressing room without a customary handshake
  • Pakistan, in protest, snubbed the post-match ceremony in their聽first match since the bitter rivals' military clashed 4 months ago

DUBAI: India鈥檚 victorious captain Suryakumar Yadav defended his team鈥檚 decision not to shake hands with the defeated Pakistan players on Sunday, saying that it was taken in alignment with their government and cricket board.
India thumped Pakistan by seven wickets in a Group A Asia Cup clash in Dubai which ended on a bitter note as Indian players headed into their dressing room without a customary handshake.
Pakistan, in protest, refused to attend the post match ceremony as tensions flared in a match which was the first between the bitter rivals since May鈥檚 military action.
The cross border clashes were sparked after an attack in Pahalgam in Indian Kashmir in April which killed 26 people, with India blaming Pakistan.
New Delhi resisted the calls to boycott the match and cleared the team to play Pakistan only in multi-national events.
鈥淲e are aligned with the government and Board of Control for Cricket in India,鈥 said Suryakumar after scoring 47 not out as India chased down a modest Pakistan target of 128 in 15.5 overs.
Left-armer Kuldeep Yadav led India鈥檚 spin rout with 3-18 as Pakistan were restricted to a below-par 127-9 in 20 overs.
Pakistan鈥檚 head coach Mike Hesson termed said he was disappointed with the Indian players鈥 refusal to shake hands.
鈥淲e were ready to shake hands at the end of the game,鈥 said Hesson. 鈥淲e are disappointed that the opposition did not do that.
鈥淲e went over there and they were already gone to the changing room, so that was obviously a disappointing way to finish the match.鈥
Hesson said that the decision not to send captain Salman Agha to the post match ceremony was 鈥渏ust in the flow of the things.鈥
鈥淭he team manager Naveed Cheema lodged a protest with match referee Andy Pycroft after the match,鈥 said Pakistan鈥檚 team management in a statement after the match.
鈥淭he behavior of Indian players was against the spirit of sportsmanship,鈥 it added. 鈥淭hat is why skipper Agha was not sent to the post match ceremony.鈥
India, with two wins from two, are nearly through to the next Super Fours stage of the tournament with their final group match against Oman on Friday.
Pakistan play UAE next on Wednesday and despite the defeat to India are expected to make the next stage.

  • Barcelona dominated Valencia in the first half without creating many clear-cut chances

BARCELONA: Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Fermin Lopez struck twice each as Barcelona thumped Valencia 6-0 on Sunday in a La Liga match they were forced to play at their tiny Johan Cruyff training ground stadium because of delays in reopening their Spotify Camp Nou home.
The rampant Spanish champions moved second, two points behind leaders Real Madrid, who boast a 100 percent record after their win at Real Sociedad on Saturday.
Hosting the game at the 6,000 capacity ground besides their training facilities west of the city, with the rebuilt Camp Nou not yet permitted to open, Barca鈥檚 first home game of the season saw high-calibre football in a low-key setting.
Star forward Lamine Yamal鈥檚 absence due to a groin issue was a further blow for Barca, with coach Hansi Flick criticizing the Spanish national team for playing him twice despite the problem during World Cup qualifiers last week.
The German handed Roony Bardghji his debut on the right flank in Yamal鈥檚 stead after his summer arrival from Copenhagen.
Barcelona dominated Valencia in the first half without creating many clear-cut chances.
Marcus Rashford and Ferran Torres fired narrowly over and wide respectively as Flick鈥檚 side penned in the visitors.
Lopez, linked with a move to Chelsea during the summer, dug in to stay at Barca and proved his worth against Los Che.
Barca took the lead after 29 minutes when Torres flicked on a pass into the midfielder鈥檚 path.
Lopez scampered into the box and flashed a strike across Julen Agirrezabala and into the net.
Carlos Corberan鈥檚 Valencia, 15th, did not muster a shot in the first half to Barca鈥檚 11, playing conservatively after a 7-1 thrashing by the Blaugrana in January.
Flick brought on Raphinha for the quiet Bardghji at half-time as he sought to put the game to bed, and soon had the goals he wanted.
Rashford, on his brightest outing since joining from Manchester United on loan, whipped in a dangerous cross which Raphinha slid home at the far post.
It was Rashford鈥檚 first direct goal contribution since arriving at the club.
Lopez blasted in a third from long range, which goalkeeper Agirrezabala might have dealt with better.
Raphinha smashed in Barca鈥檚 fourth at the near post as the Catalans ran riot.
Flick shuffled his pack with Thursday鈥檚 Champions League opener in mind, bringing on Polish veteran Lewandowski and Dani Olmo.
The 37-year-old striker grabbed his first goal of the season with a lethal finish after Olmo played him in behind the defense.
Flick was also able to bring on midfielder Marc Bernal after a nine-month absence following a severe knee injury.
The 18-year-old holding midfielder created Barca鈥檚 sixth goal as he set up Lewandowski to dink over the hapless Agirrezabala to round off the emphatic rout.

Germany crowned EuroBasket champions after thrilling win over Turkiye
  • The reigning World Cup champions put in a gritty defensive display, with Isaac Bonga coming up with key plays down the stretch before Schroeder put the team on his back

RIGA: Germany pulled off a stunning 88-83 victory over Turkiye on Sunday to win the EuroBasket title for the first time since 1993, with point guard Dennis Schroeder draining a late jump shot and then adding a pair of high-pressure free throws in a thrilling climax.
The reigning World Cup champions put in a gritty defensive display, with Isaac Bonga coming up with key plays down the stretch before Schroeder put the team on his back and carried them over the line with a late-game point-guard masterclass.
Both sides began with a barrage of three-point attempts, blocks and bruising challenges in a high-octane first half that saw Turkiye take a six-point lead into the break, but that lead was quickly erased at the start of the third period as the Germans roared back.
Hampered after collecting three fouls over the first three periods, Turkiye鈥檚 Alperen Sengun came back into the game early in the fourth quarter and made a tough hook shot before taking a charge on the defensive end to preserve a slender three-point lead.
Cedi Osman went back up the floor and hit his sixth three of the night to double their lead as the momentum swung, but they could not shake the Germans off and when Sengun picked up his fourth foul with just under four minutes remaining, Bonga gave Germany a one-point lead on the next play.
With the game reaching boiling point, Schroeder scored with a driving layup before Bonga grabbed an offensive rebound and Schroeder made the most of it, hitting a pull-up jumper with 19 seconds left to give the Germans a three-point lead.
Sengun tried to level, heaving a three-pointer with Daniel Theis鈥檚 hand in his face, but the shot kissed the front of the rim, and Osman fouled Schroeder after the rebound, with the 31-year-old icing the two resulting shots from the line to secure a superb win.
In the bronze medal match, Greece had to hold off a frenetic late fightback to squeeze past Finland, almost blowing a 15-point lead in the final four minutes before hanging on to win 92-89 to secure third place in the tournament.

  • City remain six points adrift of leaders Liverpool, but victory is a huge confidence boost for Pep Guardiola鈥檚 side ahead of facing Serie A champions Napoli and Premier League title rivals Arsenal next week

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom: Erling Haaland struck twice as Manchester City inflicted another damaging defeat on Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim with a comprehensive 3-0 win on Sunday.
Phil Foden opened the scoring before Haaland took center stage with a second-half double, either side of an incredible miss from the Norwegian, as City bounced back from two consecutive Premier League defeats.
United went into a derby ahead of City in the Premier League table for the first time in five years.
But that owed more to City鈥檚 early season struggles than signs of progress for Amorim鈥檚 men, who have taken just four points from their opening four games and been dumped out of the League Cup by fourth-tier Grimsby.
鈥淚n these kind of games we need to be perfect and in this game we were not perfect,鈥 said Amorim.
鈥淭he frustration is always the same because with the amount of chances (we create), we need to score goals.鈥
To cap a fine City display, goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma marked his debut with a stunning save from Bryan Mbeumo to deny United a foothold in the game at 2-0.
City remain six points adrift of leaders Liverpool, but victory is a huge confidence boost for Pep Guardiola鈥檚 side ahead of facing Serie A champions Napoli and Premier League title rivals Arsenal next week.
鈥淲e needed this,鈥 said Haaland. 鈥淵ou always want to win the derby but you could feel it extra today.
鈥淚鈥檓 so relieved, so happy we managed to do it altogether. We have to keep going.鈥
Before kick-off, both sets of fans put rivalry aside to pay tribute to boxing legend Ricky Hatton, who died on Sunday at the age of 46.
A massive City fan, Hatton鈥檚 face was displayed on big screens during a minute鈥檚 applause.
Foden, a fellow boyhood City supporter, said before kick-off that the news gave the home side extra motivation to win in Hatton鈥檚 honor.
And the England international was central to a much-needed victory after a difficult start to the campaign for him personally and City as a whole.
Foden was the Premier League player of the season in the 2023/24 campaign, but his form dipped drastically last season.
Fitness issues meant he had not started a game this season until Sunday, but he took just 18 minutes to make his mark.
United鈥檚 defense allowed Jeremy Doku to bundle his way to the by-line and the Belgian鈥檚 cross picked out Foden, completely unmarked, to head in the opening goal.

Donnarumma decisive

Doku was the creator once more when City doubled their lead on 53 minutes.
Haaland showed his power, pace and incredible precision to dink the ball over the onrushing Altay Bayindir.
City鈥檚 number nine went from the sublime to the ridiculous moments later when he missed an open goal with the chance to double his tally.
United were architects of their own danger as Matthijs de Ligt鈥檚 poor pass set up a City counter-attack.
Tijjani Reijnders鈥檚 dummy set Haaland clear on goal, but after rounding Bayindir, he could only hit the post on the stretch.
Moments later, Donnarumma produced his moment of magic to prevent what could have been a turning point.
Mbeumo鈥檚 sweetly-struck volley was arrowing into the bottom corner until the Italian reached out a giant right hand to turn it behind.
What could have been 2-1 was soon 3-0 thanks to another United gift.
Harry Maguire this time gave away possession to Bernardo Silva, who set Haaland racing away into the vacant United half and he kept his cool to score for the eighth time in nine appearances against United.
City fans goaded Amorim with chants of 鈥渟acked in the morning鈥 in the closing stages.
The Portuguese is not in danger of an immediate dismissal, but his Premier League record now reads a dismal eight wins in 31 games.
