Anisimova outlasts Sabalenka, Swiatek fells Bencic to lock in Wimbledon final
  • Anisimova battles past top-ranked Sabalenka in three sets
  • Swiatek continues to fly high on grass by crushing Bencic
  • Wimbledon to crown eighth consecutive first-time champion

LONDON: Amanda Anisimova tore up the script and soared into her maiden Wimbledon final by outclassing world number one Aryna Sabalenka with fierce determination and fearless shot-making on Thursday and will meet Iga Swiatek for a shot at Grand Slam glory.

Anisimova’s 6-4 4-6 6-4 victory extended her record over her equally powerful rival to 6-3, and kept alive American dreams of a third women’s Grand Slam champion this year after Madison Keys won the Australian Open and Coco Gauff won the French Open.

Standing in her way will be five-times major winner Swiatek, who continued her new-found love affair with grass this year to blaze into her first final at the All England Club with a breezy 6-2 6-0 demolition of Tokyo Olympic champion Belinda Bencic.

In Saturday’s final, Anisimova, 23, will look to become the first American to win Wimbledon since Serena Williams in 2016.

“This doesn’t feel real right now, honestly,” a beaming Anisimova said shortly after her big battle.

“Aryna is such a tough competitor and I was absolutely dying out there. Yeah, I don’t know how I pulled it off. I mean, she’s such an incredible competitor and she’s an inspiration to me and I’m sure so many other people.

“We’ve had so many tough battles. To come out on top today and be in the final of Wimbledon is so incredibly special. The atmosphere was incredible. I know she’s the number one, but a lot of people were cheering for me. Huge thanks to everyone.”

On an oven-like Center Court where the temperature climbed to 30 degrees Celsius, Sabalenka twice rushed to the aid of ill fans by supplying bottles of cold water and an ice pack, before she cracked under pressure from her opponent in the 10th game.

Anisimova, competing in her first Grand Slam semifinal since her 2019 French Open run as a gifted teenager, made her opponent sweat for every point and wrapped up the opening set when the Belarusian produced a double fault.

With her back against the wall, Sabalenka fought like a tiger, the animal that has become her totem, and broke for a 4-3 lead en route to levelling the match at one set apiece after some sloppy errors from 13th seed Anisimova’s racket.

Having matched each other’s decibel levels in a cacophony of grunting, the duo swapped breaks at the start of the decider but Anisimova pounced again when Sabalenka sent a shot long and went on to reach the showpiece match.

COMPLETE DISBELIEF

Anisimova, who took a mental health break in 2023, said that making the final of a Grand Slam for the first time at Wimbledon left her in complete disbelief.

“It’s been a year turnaround since coming back and to be in this spot ... I mean, it’s not easy and so many people dream of, competing on this incredible court,” Anisimova added.

“It’s been such a privilege to compete here and to be in the final is just indescribable.”

Watching the second semifinal that will determine her next opponent was very much on Anisimova’s mind despite a near three-hour workout in testing conditions.

“It’s going to be an incredible match and whoever comes out on top, it’s going to be a battle in the final,” she said.

“Hopefully I can finally spend some time with my family.”

The 27-year-old Sabalenka, who was beaten in the Australian and French Open finals, was left to lick her wounds after missing the chance to become the first woman since Williams in 2014-15 to reach four straight major title matches.

It was a more straightforward path to the final for Swiatek, the claycourt specialist who had never got past the last eight at Wimbledon before this year, as she broke Bencic twice in the first set and three times in the next to romp to victory.

“Honestly I never even dreamt it was going to be possible for me to play in the final so I’m super excited and just proud of myself,” the Pole said.

“Tennis keeps surprising me. I thought I’d lived through everything even though I’m young. I thought I’d experienced everything on the court. I didn’t experience playing well on grass so I’m super excited and enjoying it.”

Saturday’s title showdown will crown a new Wimbledon champion for the eighth successive year.

“I don’t think I’ve played Amanda on the WTA Tour. We played in juniors and she can play amazing tennis,” the 24-year-old Swiatek added. “She loves fast surfaces.

“I’ll have to be ready for fast shots for her being proactive but I’m just going to focus on myself and prepare tactically tomorrow.”

India again refuse handshake with Pakistan at Asia Cup
  • India won the toss, opted to field first in the Super Four match at the Dubai International Stadium
  • India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have qualified for the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup

DUBAI: India captain Suryakumar Yadav once again chose not to shake hands with Pakistan skipper Salman Ali Agha at the toss ahead of their Asia Cup match on Sunday, as animosity between the bitter rivals rumbled on at the eight-team tournament.

The Asia Cup has been dominated by headlines about India and Pakistan’s first meetings on the pitch since the military conflict between the nuclear-armed neighbors in May this year.

India won the politically-charged Group A match by seven wickets last week, and their players refused to shake hands with their Pakistan opponents after the match.

Suryakumar dedicated India’s victory to their armed forces, while several of his teammates took to social media to express similar thoughts.

Furious Pakistan considered withdrawing from the tournament to protest against match referee Andy Pycroft, who they say condoned unsportsmanlike behavior by India.

They delayed their match against United Arab Emirates by an hour on Wednesday and only went ahead with the game after an apology from Pycroft and the assurance of an inquiry by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

India won the toss and opted to field first in the Super Four match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in the United Arab Emirates.

India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have qualified for the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup. The final will be played on September 28.

  • Franchises can spend between $1.5m and $2m to build their squads, with a minimum purse of $800,000 available on the day
  • Auction is in Dubai on Oct. 1 at the Four Seasons Hotel, Jumeirah Beach

DUBAI: The much-anticipated DP World ILT20 Season 4 Player Auction will be held in Dubai on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2025, at the Four Seasons Hotel, Jumeriah Beach.

The auction will bring together all six franchises as they look to complete their squads for the upcoming season, following their retention picks that were announced in July. The season will kick off on Dec. 2, 2025 and conclude on Jan. 4, 2026.

The event will be the DP World ILT20’s first player auction, a landmark moment in the league’s journey.

Auction rules

Each franchise will have a purse of $800,000 to spend at the auction plus whatever spend remains unused from the $1.2 million that was available for direct signings and retentions.

At the end of the auction, each franchise must have spent a minimum of $1.5m and a maximum of $2m. They may also spend an additional $250,000 on as many as two wildcard players outside the auction.

All franchises must have a minimum of 19 players and a maximum of 21 players by the end of the auction (excluding wildcards). Within this there must be a minimum of 11 players from ICC Full Member countries, four from the UAE, one from Kuwait, one from ֱ and two from other ICC Associate Nations.

Player registration

The minimum base price for all players is $10,000. Players may also have a base price of $40,000 or $80,000.

The DP World ILT20 player registrations were completed between July and September.

The final list of available players will be circulated to franchises before the auction.

If a player is injured, receives an international call-up or does not receive a no-objection certificate, they may be replaced at any time until the end of the league phase of DP World ILT20 Season 4. Replacement players do not need to have been featured in the player auction.

Auction mechanics

Players will be allocated sets on account of status (i.e. full member/associate player/UAE player/Kuwait player/ֱ player) and specialisation. DP World ILT20 may at its discretion determine to group players by whether they are capped or uncapped and may include a marquee set(s). Full member players will be drawn first.

Within the sets, players will be drawn at random, and the auctioneer will read out the player’s name and his base price. The auctioneer will then invite bids until there are no further bids. Following the conclusion of all sets, if franchises still have room in their squad, they may request players who have not been signed to return to the auction (accelerated rounds).

Once all franchises have spent their minimum total spend and have fulfilled their minimum quotas for each type of player and do not wish to sign any more players, the auction will be concluded.

UAE player Right to Match

Franchises can exercise one Right to Match option for a UAE player that has been in their development squad or has played for them in DP World ILT20 Season 3.

This can only be used once in the auction. Only UAE players are eligible for the Right to Match option.

‘I’m here to win games, lift trophies’: Josko Gvardiol eyes more glory with Manchester City
  • Pep Guardiola’s team face Arsenal on Sunday night hoping to reassert their Premier League credentials after a difficult last campaign

MANCHESTER: When Manchester City ended last season without a major trophy for the first time since 2017, it led to intense debate and conjecture about the club’s direction.

With Liverpool claiming the Premier League title in impressive fashion and spending big this summer, Arsenal have emerged as the side most likely to stop Arne Slot’s side from becoming the dominant force as City had been.

Yet despite a horrific run of just one win in 13 games, Pep Guardiola’s men rallied in the previous campaign to finish third in the table and claim a coveted Champions League place amid fierce competition. That provided hope at the start of a new era.

With an overhaul of the squad, icons such as Kevin de Bruyne, Kyle Walker, Ilkay Gundogan and Ederson departed, while Omar Marmoush, Rayan Ait-Nouri and France attacker Rayan Cherki were among the new arrivals.

Italy keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma also joined from Paris Saint-Germain, where he helped the French side win their first Champions League.

For defender Josko Gvardiol, the changes mean it may take time to shape their future, but the ambition remains the same for a club that won an unprecedented four league titles in a row and the 2023 Champions League.

“I’m here to win the games, to lift the trophies as well,” said the 23-year-old. “It’s not even a question (of whether) I want to win it. It is and it has to be like this, otherwise, if you don’t want it, then this is not the place for you.

“But I can tell you I see everyone still has the hunger and desire to win everything, too. This is what we need, and this is a bit of what we missed last season. I’m really happy to see that.”

There was concern again when City started sluggishly with two defeats in their opening three league games.

But a 3-0 derby win over Manchester United and a 2-0 success in their Champions League opener against Napoli have lifted confidence before they visit Arsenal today at Emirates Stadium.

Gvardiol “doesn’t read the comments” that have written City off as title contenders, but the Croatia international admitted: “We are still not at the level we want to be. We need to build slowly.

“Last season, it was not the best; we struggled a lot, but you can see we are still together as a team and having good results.

“We have quality. All we miss is a bit of confidence. The only way to build it back is to go game by game because the season is very long.”

Arsenal will have Viktor Gyokeres leading their attack following his summer move from Sporting, where he scored 54 times for the Portuguese club last season.

It included a hat-trick in a 4-1 Champions League win over City during their troubled period.

But the Etihad outfit have their own prolific striker in Norwegian Erling Haaland, who has scored 12 times this term for club and country.

Three have come this week against neighbors United and then Napoli, where he became the fastest player to reach 50 Champions League goals.

Haaland, 25, achieved the feat in 49 games, surpassing Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record, and is expected to challenge the competition’s scoring record of 140 held by Al-Nassr’s Cristiano Ronaldo.

“Everything he does is magic,” added Gvardiol. “It’s so nice to have him up front. I would say they are different, but Gyokeres is a good player. I remember him from the game against Sporting.

“We struggled and we lost the game. As always, Arsenal is going to be a good game, but we will go there and try to win.

“Most of their signings are bringing something new, the style of play, but I can also talk about our new signings, and we are more than happy to have them in our team, and they have adapted really quickly.”

While Egypt forward Marmoush, Algeria left-back Ait-Nouri and Cherki are currently injured, keeper Donnarumma has immediately proved his worth with clean sheets in his first two games.

“Look at Gigio,” said Gvardiol. “I know when I made my debut, it wasn’t that easy to accept everything, the rhythm, the pressure, so I want to congratulate him.

“I know what he did in the Champions League last season. I’ve never seen someone that big in the goal and he can cover everything.

“He gives the defense confidence. If we are to achieve things, it’s not just Erling, it’s about everyone,” he added. “We need to trust each other; it’s the only way we can fight together. If people make mistakes, we are here to support and push each other. That’s who we are and that’s why it’s so special.”

Gvardiol’s return has also helped tighten City’s defense after a knee injury sidelined him at the Club World Cup, where City were upset 4-3 by Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli in the last 16.

The 23-year-old, who has played at left-back and in central defense, has impressed since his $103 million arrival from RB Leipzig in 2023.

“If I tell you I want to be at the same level as two years ago, I wouldn’t be happy,” said Gvardiol. “Everyone wants to be the best version, but I think I can perform much better than I did in my first year.”

  • The 5-1 win over Al-Riyadh means they lead on goal difference from Al-Ittihad, who pulled off a last-gasp win over Al-Najma

RIYADH: Al-Nassr maintained a perfect start to their Saudi Pro League campaign with a 5-1 win over Al-Riyadh at Al-Awwal Park in the 2025-2026 season’s third round of matches.

With a full haul of nine points from three matches so far, Al-Nassr lead the early season standings on goal difference for the second week running.

It took only six minutes for the home team to take the lead, Joao Felix converting from close range after some excellent wing play from Kingsley Coman.

The second goal came on the half-hour mark when Coman ran through on goal and confidently finished with his right foot past Riyadh goalkeeper Milan Borjan. The lead was extended only three minutes later when Cristiano Ronaldo got in on the act with a goal not dissimilar to Coman’s. This time, the assist came from the Nassr captain’s Portuguese international colleague Felix.

In the 44th minute, a goal by Felix was overturned by VAR for a foul earlier in the move by Sadio Mane, who received a yellow card for his infraction.

But it did not take long for Al-Nassr to notch up their fourth, man of the match Felix again at the heart of the action to score his second of the night just four minutes after the restart.

Mamadou Sylla pulled one back for Al-Riyadh on 51 minutes with a fine diving header but, even with the majority of the second half still to play, it never looked to be anything other than a consolation for the visitors.

Ronaldo rounded up the scoring in the 78th minute after latching on to Coman’s lay-off to give Al-Nassr a comprehensive 5-1 win over their city rivals. It was the second time in three SPL matches that the Riyadh giants have scored five goals.

Earlier in the day, Al-Ittihad were moments away from dropping their first points of the season at Al-Najma before N’Golo Kante’s superb first-time finish secured a last-gasp away win to maintain their perfect start to the season. With a maximum nine points, the reigning champions are second in the table behind Al-Nassr on goal difference.

Al-Qadsiah, who beat Al-Khaleej 2-1 on Friday night, are third with seven points.

In Saturday’s third match, Al-Hazem were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Al-Fateh.

Mourinho celebrates Benfica return with convincing win
  • Mourinho, who won trophies with Real Madrid, Manchester United, Inter Milan as well as coaching various other sides

AVES, Portugal: Jose Mourinho began his second spell in charge of Benfica with a comfortable 3-0 win at AVS on Saturday.
Heorhiy Sudakov opened the scoring at the end of the first half for the visitors, with Vangelis Pavlidis netting the second from the penalty spot before the hour mark.
Franjo Ivanovic rounded off the rout for Benfica, who moved second in the table, five points behind leaders Porto having played one fewer match.
The veteran Portuguese coach, back at the helm of the Eagles 25 years on, celebrated the third goal furiously, pumping his first and kicking a cone.
The 62-year-old, who also coached Porto in the Portuguese top flight before leaving in 2004 to join Chelsea, will face both those teams within the next 15 days.
Mourinho, who won trophies with Real Madrid, Manchester United, Inter Milan as well as coaching various other sides, was sacked by Fenerbahce in August.
Benfica ousted coach Bruno Lage this week after a surprise defeat in the Champions League by Azerbaijani minnows Qarabag and appointed Mourinho as his replacement on Thursday.
His first spell at the club lasted just 11 games but Mourinho said on his presentation that he was more “mature” and “altruistic” now.
