Wimbledon blames ‘human error’ for embarrassing line-calling glitch
  • Officials apologize to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Sonay Kartal after the malfunction during their fourth-round match
  • A fully automated system has replaced human line judges at Wimbledon in 2025, in line with the Australian Open and the US OpeN

LONDON: Wimbledon chiefs on Monday blamed human error for an embarrassing failure of the tournament’s electronic line-calling system.

Officials apologized to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Sonay Kartal after the malfunction during their fourth-round match on Center Court on Sunday, which Pavlyuchenkova won in straight sets.

After an investigation, organizers admitted the technology was turned off in error on a section of the court for a game, with the mistake only becoming apparent when a shot from Britain’s Kartal that clearly missed the baseline was not called out.

Had the call been correct, it would have given Russia’s Pavlyuchenkova a 5-4 lead in the first set, but instead umpire Nico Helwerth ruled the point should be replayed, with Kartal going on to win the game.

The Russian accused the official of home bias, saying: “Because she is local, they can say whatever. You took the game away from me.”

Wimbledon issued a statement on Sunday saying the system had been “deactivated in error” for one game by those operating the system.

“In that time, there were three calls not picked up by live ELC on the affected part of the court. Two of these were called by the chair umpire, who was not made aware that the system had been deactivated,” it said.

“Following the third, the chair umpire stopped the match and consulted with the review official. It was determined that the point should be replayed.

“The chair umpire followed the established process. We have apologized to the players involved.”

Sally Bolton, chief executive of the All England Club, told reporters on Monday that the system was “working optimally.”

“The issue we had was human error in terms of the tracking system having been inadvertently deactivated, and then the chair (umpire) not being made aware of the fact that it had been deactivated,” she said.

She added: “We’ve spoken to the players, we’ve apologized to them, we’ve very quickly moved into reviewing everything that had happened yesterday afternoon and putting in place the appropriate changes to the processes.”

A fully automated system has replaced human line judges at Wimbledon in 2025, in line with the Australian Open and the US Open.

But the glitch in Sunday’s fourth-round match follows concerns raised by other players about the technology, including British stars Emma Raducanu and Jack Draper.

Around 80 former line judges are employed as match assistants, with two on each court offering support to the umpire.

But Bolton said there was no need to put them back on the courts.

“The system was functional,” she said. “It had been deactivated. We didn’t need to put line judges back on the court again, we needed the system to be active.”

Automated line-calling technology has become standard across tennis, with all events on the men’s ATP Tour and many WTA tournaments using it.

  • “TSV 1860 Munich will strive for a full investigation into this incident and will hold the spectator accountable using all available means,” the club said
  • The game resumed after an interruption of about 10 minutes

MUNICH: German third-division club 1860 Munich have apologized after one of their fans racially abused Energie Cottbus forward Justin Butler during a league match between the teams on Saturday.
“TSV 1860 Munich will strive for a full investigation into this incident and will hold the spectator accountable using all available means,” the club said in a statement.
The game was almost called off after Butler was subjected to monkey chants from a person among the 1860 fans. The club said players from both teams, stewards and other fans helped identify the alleged perpetrator, who was handed over to police.
The incident was addressed by the stadium announcer and 1860 supporters chanted “Nazis out!” while play was suspended. The game resumed after an interruption of about 10 minutes.
Referee Konrad Oldhafer said Butler informed him that he had been targeted by someone making monkey noises.
“I didn’t hear them myself,” Oldhafer told broadcaster MagentaSport. “I immediately made it clear to the player that we were taking it very seriously.”
Oldhafer said he spoke with both captains and with Butler, who is Black. The referee said he asked Butler – after they were told the alleged perpetrator was found and removed from the stadium – whether he felt he could continue the game. He resumed it when Butler said he could.
“It’s appalling,” Bulter’s teammate Axel Borgmann said in comments reported by news agency dpa.
“I asked Justin, and he confirmed it. It’s sad that this keeps coming up. … It happens again and again, which is sad and regrettable. I’m glad the fan was identified and removed from the stadium.”

  • WTA Finals features the top eight singles players and doubles teams in the world

RIYADH: World No. 2 Iga Swiatek began her quest for a second WTA Finals trophy with a 6-1 6-2 win over Australian Open champion Madison Keys in their round robin clash at the season-ending championships on Saturday.

The 2023 champion made a fast start in the Riyadh showpiece, winning 12 of the first 14 points to take a 3-0 lead as a rusty Keys struggled to find rhythm on serve in her first match since a stunning US Open first-round defeat in late August.

Swiatek continued to pile the pressure on her American opponent, who looked out of sorts in her first appearance in the season finale since her debut in 2016, and the Pole raced away to take the opening set dropping only one game.

The pair swapped breaks at the start of the second set, but an untimely double fault from Keys handed the advantage back to Swiatek, who made no mistake from there to wrap up the victory on serve in only 61 minutes.

The WTA Finals, which features the top eight singles players and doubles teams in the world, has a record prize pool of $15.5 million and offers 1,500 points. The tournament culminates with the finals at King Saud University Sports Arena on Nov. 8.

On Sunday, the top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka will begin her bid for a maiden WTA Finals title when the Belarusian takes on two-times major finalist Jasmine Paolini of Italy in the Steffi Graf Group before holder Coco Gauff meets fellow American Jessica Pegula.

Unlike in the previous two editions of the tournament, the year-end world No. 1 ranking will not be up for grabs with US Open champion Sabalenka assured of finishing on top after building a 1,675-point lead over Swiatek heading to Riyadh.

Elsewhere, Canadian ninth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime boosted his chances of qualifying for the season-ending ATP Finals with a 7-6(3) 6-4 victory over Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik in the semifinals of the Paris Masters on Saturday.

The US Open semifinalist leapfrogged Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti to eighth place in the ATP Race to Turin standings and could secure his second ATP Finals appearance after 2022 if he wins Sunday’s final.

The 25-year-old will face either four-time Grand Slam champion Jannik Sinner or world No. 3 Alexander Zverev in the title showdown.

“I’m so happy. A Masters 1000 final sounds so good. You don’t play those finals every week. Hopefully, I can go all the way and get the title,” Auger-Aliassime said.

“But in terms of today, you get into a Masters and every match is tough ... You’re always kind of curious to see how your game is going to match up.

“I have deep self-confidence in my game; I know what I can do against the best players in the world but you still have to go and execute. Today I did really well and I’m happy with the result.”

The opening set was a serving clinic from both players, with neither conceding a break or even a break point. Locked at 6-6, the set went to a tiebreak, where Auger-Aliassime seized a 4-2 lead and closed it out comfortably.

In a scrappy second set, 13th seed Bublik started brightly, breaking Auger-Aliassime early to take a 2-0 lead. However, the Canadian world No. 10 responded immediately by breaking back, drawing frustration from Bublik, who smashed his racket.

Bublik recovered to take a 4-1 lead, but Auger-Aliassime came to life, reeling off five straight games to seal his place in the final in one hour and 36 minutes.

Supreme Bayern crush Leverkusen 3-0 to stretch record winning run
  • They extended their record run in Europe’s top five leagues to 15 wins on the trot
  • Leverkusen suffered their first league loss under coach Kasper Hjulmand

MUNICH: Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich bagged three goals in 19 minutes in a rampant first half to power past visitors Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 on Saturday and stretch their record-extending run to 15 wins from 15 matches across all competitions this season.
Goals from Serge Gnabry and Nicolas Jackson and an own goal from Loic Bade in the 44th minute gave Bayern, who rested top scorer Harry Kane, Michael Olize and Luis Diaz in the first half ahead of next week’s trip to reigning champions Paris St. Germain in the Champions League, an easy victory.
They extended their record run in Europe’s top five leagues to 15 wins on the trot after setting a record on Wednesday with a 4-1 win over Cologne in the German Cup second round, improving on AC Milan’s 13 straight wins from 1992/3. Bayern are in top spot on 27 points, five ahead of RB Leipzig.
Leverkusen suffered their first league loss under coach Kasper Hjulmand and saw their record-breaking undefeated run on the road end after 37 league matches and more than two seasons, with their previous away defeat in the league dating back to May 27 2023.
The hosts set a frantic early pace, putting Leverkusen under instant and relentless pressure and with in-form teenager Lennart Karl coming close early on.
They opened their account with a textbook three-touch attack from keeper Manuel Neuer to scorer Gnabry, who finished the move with a low shot in the 25th minute.
Before Leverkusen had time to regroup, the hosts struck again with Jackson bagging his first Bundesliga goal with a header from a Konrad Laimer cross in the 31st. Bade’s own goal from a Raphael Guerreiro cutback crowned a dominant first half for the hosts and killed off the game.
Jackson headed over the bar from close range in the 50th and Guerreiro fired just wide a little later, with Bayern introducing Kane, Diaz and Olize on the hour but failing to score again.

  • Chelsea climbed to fourth place in the table on 17 points after 10 games

LONDON, Nov 1 : Arsenal maintained a searing pace at the top of the Premier League with a straightforward 2-0 win at Burnley, while Liverpool snapped a dreadful four-match losing run with a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa to climb provisionally to third.
The misery continued for Wolverhampton Wanderers at the bottom as they suffered yet another defeat on Saturday.
Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal moved seven points clear of the pack ahead of the rest of the weekend’s action with first-half goals by Viktor Gyokeres and Declan Rice taking Arsenal to 25 points from their opening 10 games of the season.
Ten-man Wolves were hammered 3-0 at Fulham and prop up the table with only two points as the pressure intensifies on their manager Vitor Pereira.
Manchester United needed a stunning late volley from Amad Diallo to earn a 2-2 draw at Nottingham Forest who at least avoided a fifth successive league defeat.
Crystal Palace beat Brentford 2-0 while Brighton & Hove Albion were 3-0 winners at home to Leeds United, and Chelsea edged Tottenham Hotspur 1-0.
Arsenal have now gone seven games in all competitions without conceding a goal and were never seriously troubled at promoted Burnley as they produced another clinical display.
Nine of Arsenal’s 16 Premier League goals in their first nine games arrived via a set piece and they were at it again at Turf Moor with yet another corner routine paying off.
Rice swung over a corner in the 14th minute and Gabriel knocked it back across the area for Gyokeres to tap in his first league goal since September.
Arsenal’s second in the 35th minute was only their sixth league goal from open play this season — Rice heading in from Leandro Trossard’s cross after a fast counter-attack.
“The first half was exceptional, we scored two goals and gave nothing away. That was the platform,” Arteta said.
“We didn’t have that much control in the second half. Defending was exceptional again, we didn’t give anything.”
At Anfield, Mohamed Salah became the third player in Reds history to score 250 goals when he struck in first-half injury time, capitalizing on a huge blunder from Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez who played the ball right into the path of Liverpool’s talisman.
Ryan Gravenberch doubled the home side’s lead in the 58th minute when he blasted a shot from the top of the box that deflected off Pau Torres and in past Martinez.
Arne Slot’s men climbed to within seven points of Arsenal with just their second win in eight games across all competitions. Villa fell to 11th in the table on 15 points.

“I think everyone who was here today felt the importance of the game, the players and fans as well,” Slot told TNT Sports. “We showed character and won the game.”
Wolves’ two points from their opening 10 games is not the lowest in Premier League history but it is one fewer than Derby County managed in 2007 at the start of what was the worst ever season in the competition, Derby ending with 11 points.
Ryan Sessegnon, Harry Wilson and Yerson Mosquera’s own goal gave Fulham the points while Wolves played more than half of the match with 10 men after Emmanuel Agbadou was sent off.
Defeat left Wolves eight points away from the safety zone.
“It’s just not good enough and we need to do better. We should be embarrassed,” Wolves keeper Sam Johnstone said.
Manchester United appeared to be on their way to securing a fourth successive league victory after Brazilian veteran Casemiro headed them into a 34th-minute lead at the City Ground.
United, however, capitulated early in the second half when two goals in less than two minutes from Morgan Gibbs-White and Nicolo Savona helped Forest to turn the match on its head.
Diallo at least ensured United did not return empty-handed as he unleashed a blistering strike from the edge of the penalty area nine minutes from time and he also had the chance to snatch victory late in the game.
“We are really disappointed to go home with one point,” Diallo said.
United moved into fifth in the standings while Forest stay 18th after a first point in five league games.
Chelsea striker Joao Pedro got back on the scoresheet for the first time since August when Moises Caicedo stole the ball from Micky van de Ven on the edge of the Spurs penalty box and the Ecuadorian squared for Pedro who made no mistake from eight meters in the 34th minute.
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca was asked by reporters if he regretted his side not winning by a more emphatic scoreline.
“I am happy with the 1-0, with the three points, especially because we kept the clean sheet,” the Italian said.
Chelsea climbed to fifth place in the table on 17 points after 10 games, one rung below Spurs on goal difference.
Jean-Philippe Mateta scored his fourth goal in two home league games for Crystal Palace as they beat London rivals Brentford 2-0 to move to eighth.
Brighton & Hove Albion’s seasoned striker Danny Welbeck scored his sixth league goal of the season as his side breezed past Leeds, volleying home the opener in the 11th minute.
Diego Gomez scored twice in six second-half minutes to underline Brighton’s superiority as the south-coast side moved into the top half of the table.

10-man Al-Ittihad stage stunning 4-goal comeback to draw with Al-Khaleej

JEDDAH: Al-Ittihad produced a remarkable comeback on Saturday night, fighting back from four goals down with 10 men to draw 4-4 against Al-Khaleej in one of the most dramatic matches of the Saudi Pro League season.

The evening began disastrously for the reigning champions, who conceded twice in the opening 18 minutes.

Matters worsened in the 31st minute when midfielder Fabinho was shown a red card, leaving Sergio Conceicao’s side with 10 men for over an hour.

Al-Khaleej capitalized quickly, netting twice in the 37th and 47th minutes to give the hosts a seemingly unassailable 4-0 lead.

Diaby pulled one back for the champions early in the second half, but it appeared to be little more than a consolation.

Then, in a stunning finale, Diaby scored again in the 86th minute before Al-Ittihad mounted an extraordinary late surge, scoring another two through Mario Mitaj and Faisal Al-Ghamdi in the 96th and 98th minutes to complete a dramatic turnaround and snatch an unlikely draw.
