Spain thrash grieving Portugal 5-0 in Women’s Euro clash
  • Spain’s victory was their biggest in a European Championship, surpassing their 4-1 win over Finland in 2022
  • With Italy having defeated Belgium 1-0 earlier in the evening, Spain top the group with the Italians second

BERN, Switzerland: Spain striker Esther Gonzalez scored twice in the first half as her side powered to a 5-0 win over Portugal at the Women’s Euros that was overshadowed by the deaths of Portugal international Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva in a car accident earlier on Thursday.

On an emotional night that began with a minute’s silence for the brothers, Portugal went behind almost immediately, Olga Carmona putting the ball over the top for Gonzalez to run on to and score in the second minute.

Mariona Caldentey did superbly to pull the ball across the box for Vicky Lopez to score the second goal five minutes later.

The Portuguese managed to steady the ship but they were rocked again four minutes before the break when Alexia Putellas took down another great pass from Caldentey on her chest before calmly cutting inside and firing home.

“I highlight our mindset, how we came out to play,” Putellas said. “We were really eager to get started but it’s only the first match.”

There was more misery to come for Portugal before halftime as Gonzalez netted her second goal two minutes later, scoring from close range after Claudia Pina’s cross came back off the far post.

The world champions were delighted to be able to bring in Aitana Bonmati from the bench following her recent brush with viral meningitis, and the playmaker wasted no time getting into the thick of things, setting up a chance for Cristina Martin-Prieto.

“Aitana is a very important player for us. We are delighted that she is back and has overcome her illness. It is a joy,” Putellas said.

Portugal showed more composure in the second half but they were no match for Spain’s power, precision and technique and, though they held Spain at bay for most of the second half, Martin-Prieto scored with a superb late header to complete the rout.

“We conceded early goals and the team became anxious and unsettled,” said Portugal forward Diana Silva. “We couldn’t get hold of the ball and then it’s harder to chase the result. We were much better in the second half, more united. We didn’t allow Spain so much space to get in.

“We believe until the end, our goal is to earn points until the end and everything is still up for grabs.”

Silva and her teammates remained on the pitch after the final whistle, posing in front of their fans with a huge black banner in memory of Jota.

Spain’s victory was their biggest in a European Championship, surpassing their 4-1 win over Finland in 2022, and was the ideal start for what the tournament favorites hope will be their first Women’s Euro title.

With Italy having defeated Belgium 1-0 earlier in the evening, Spain top the group with the Italians second. Spain take on the Belgians in their next game, while Portugal face Italy.

Brendan Rodgers resigns as Celtic manager

LONDON: Brendan Rodgers resigned as Celtic manager on Monday, the club announced, after the Scottish giants’ lacklustre start to the season.
The club said former boss Martin O’Neill and former player Shaun Maloney would take charge of the team until a permanent successor is appointed.
Rodgers’ second spell at Celtic ended after Sunday’s 3-1 Scottish Premiership defeat at Hearts left them eight points adrift of the Edinburgh side.
“Football manager Brendan Rodgers has today tendered his resignation” and “will leave his role with immediate effect,” Celtic said in a statement.
“Brendan leaves with our thanks for the role he has played during a period of continued success for the club and we wish him further success in the future.”
The club added that the search for a replacement was already underway.
“We are pleased that during this interim period former Celtic manager, Martin O’Neill and former Celtic player, Shaun Maloney have agreed to take charge of Celtic first-team matters,” it said.
Rodgers, 52, returned for a second spell at Celtic Park in 2023, winning successive titles, to add to his league triumphs from 2017 and 2018.
He previously managed Swansea, Liverpool and Leicester and arrived at Celtic for the second time in June 2023 to succeed Ange Postecoglou.
The Northern Irishman had been at Celtic between May 2016 and February 2019, completing successive league and cup trebles.
His first season in charge saw Celtic finish with a record 106 points and become the first Scottish side to complete a top-flight season undefeated since 1899.
Rodgers continued Celtic’s domestic supremacy by winning league titles in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons and also lifted the Scottish Cup and the Scottish League Cup.
But clouds were gathering over the club this season with Celtic knocked out of the Champions League by Kazakhstan minnows Kairat Almaty.

Rodgers had appeared at odds with his employers over their summer transfer window policy.
After Celtic’s first defeat at Dundee in 37 years this month, he said the team had “lost a lot of firepower, a lot of goals.”
“And there’s no way you’ll go into a race and be given the keys to a Honda Civic and say, ‘I want you to drive it like a Ferrari’. It’s not going to happen.”
Celtic’s main shareholder Dermot Desmond hit back, saying Rodgers’ criticism had come “entirely out of the blue.”
“At no point prior to those remarks had he raised any such concerns with me, Michael , or any member of the board or executive team,” Desmond said.
“In reality, he was given final say over all football matters and was consistently backed in the recruitment process — including record investment in players he personally identified and approved.”

Atletico win at Betis to bounce back from Arsenal drubbing
  • Manuel Pellegrini’s Real Betis, sixth, are now three points behind Atletico

SEVILLE, Spain: Atletico Madrid earned a solid 2-0 win at Real Betis on Monday to move fourth in La Liga and bounce back from their Champions League thrashing by Arsenal.
Diego Simeone’s side lost 4-0 last week in north London but put that defeat behind them with a strong display at La Cartuja stadium, where Betis are playing on a temporary basis.
They were able to record only their second clean sheet in their last nine games across all competitions and their first away win of the season.
The coach’s son Giuliano Simeone opened the scoring with Alex Baena netting the second before half-time.
“This is an important win, hard-fought, and I’m happy,” Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak told Movistar.
“I hope we continue like this, away from home, not just at home... it was a great game from the whole team and a big effort.”
Giuliano Simeone fired the visitors ahead in the opening stages with a neat volley from the edge of the box.
Star summer signing Baena curled home his first goal for the club before half-time to double the Rojiblancos’ lead.
Real Betis were the better team in the second half and hit the crossbar from Abde Ezzalzouli’s free-kick, but Atletico’s defense held firm.
Atletico trail La Liga leaders Real Madrid by eight points, although they are the only team to inflict defeat on their city rivals.
“Our first win on the road and we’re very happy for the great work the team did,” said Giuliano Simone, who dedicated the goal to his recently-born nephew Faustino in his celebration, making the letter F with his fingers.
Faustino’s birth made Atletico coach Diego Simeone a grandfather.
“Nothing changes for me,” said the Rojiblancos boss, smiling, while also congratulating his son on his good performance.
Manuel Pellegrini’s Real Betis, sixth, are now three points behind Atletico.
“Today we were lacking in the final third, we had to be a little sharper in front of goal,” Betis playmaker Giovani Lo Celso told Movistar.
“The team worked hard and tried until the end, for the fans who filled the stadium on a rainy Monday and didn’t stop backing us. We have to turn the page and continue.”

FIFA President Infantino announces new ASEAN Cup tournament for Southeast Asian nations
  • Southeast Asia already stages the ASEAN Championship, a biennial regional competition, with Vietnam winning the most recent edition in January

KUALA LUMPUR: FIFA President Gianni Infantino unveiled a new football tournament for Southeast Asian nations on Sunday at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit in Malaysia.
Southeast Asia already stages the ASEAN Championship, a biennial regional competition, with Vietnam winning the most recent edition in January. But Infantino said the new tournament will be held during FIFA’s international match window allowing players from leagues around the world to join their national teams.
“Through the FIFA ASEAN Cup, we are uniting countries together, and this competition will be a huge success,” Infantino said. “It will help boost national team football in the ASEAN region and will support the development of our sport across all of Southeast Asia.”
Infantino made the announcement hours after East Timor was formally admitted as ASEAN’s 11th member.
“The number 11 is a symbolic one in the footballing world as each team has 11 players,” Infantino said.
Indonesia was the only team from an ASEAN member nation to advance beyond the third round of continental qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
The new southeast Asian tournament is expected to be staged in a similar format to the Arab Cup. FIFA said it would engage stakeholders including the Asian Football Confederation before finalizing the details.

Mbappé and Bellingham score in tense clasico as Madrid wins 2-1 to end losing run against Barcelona
  • The victory increased Madrid’s league lead over Barcelona to five points after 10 rounds

MADRID: Real Madrid finally ended its recent struggles against Barcelona in a tense clasico which saw players confronting each other after the final whistle.
Kylian Mbappé and Jude Bellingham scored as Madrid beat Barcelona 2-1 in the first clasico of the season on Sunday, halting a four-game losing streak against the Catalan rival.
The victory increased Madrid’s league lead over Barcelona to five points after 10 rounds.
There was a scuffle between the bench players from both teams after Barcelona’s Pedri was sent off just before the final whistle. The altercation continued after the game ended, with Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior and Barcelona star forward Lamine Yamal — who was successfully contained by Madrid defenders during the match — among those involved.
“It was the moment and the tension from both teams,” Madrid coach Xabi Alonso said. “It was the tension of an important match and a close result. We shouldn’t read too much into these moments of tension. All sorts of things have happened in clasicos.”
Vinícius and Yamal — whose pre-match comments upset some Madrid fans — exchanged words a couple of times during the game. Vinícius gestured against Yamal, using his hands to hint that the Barcelona star was talking too much.
“Talk is cheap,” Bellingham posted on Instagram after the match.
The England player called it “a magnificent performance from the whole team.”
“This victory is also for the fans,” he told Real Madrid TV. “Last year we played badly in the big games and today this victory was for everyone.”
Yamal and Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and Madrid defender Dani Carvajal also got into an altercation after the match.
Madrid reserve goalkeeper Andriy Lunin was sent off following the post-match scuffle, and Vinícius was among the players shown a yellow card.
Vinícius was visibly upset when he was replaced by Rodrygo in the 72nd. He went straight to the locker room before rejoining his teammates on the bench a few minutes later.
“All coaches know that there are different personalities,” Alonso said. “Now we’ll enjoy it and, when the time comes, we’ll talk about these things in the dressing room, of course.”
Mbappé strikes
France forward Mbappé, who failed to convert a second-half penalty kick, put Madrid ahead halfway through the first half. That came after the VAR had reversed a penalty-kick call and a goal for the hosts in the opening 15 minutes at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
Mbappé opened the scoring in the 22nd after an assist by Bellingham. Barcelona equalized through Fermín López in the 38th and Bellingham netted the winner in the 43rd.
Mbappé had his penalty kick saved by Barcelona goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny in the 52nd.
Madrid has won 12 of its 13 matches this season, with its lone setback a 5-2 loss at Atletico Madrid in the Spanish league in September.
It was the third loss of the season for Barcelona in all competitions. It had also lost this month 2-1 to Paris Saint-Germain at home in the Champions League and 4-1 at Sevilla in the Spanish league.
Yamal was making his third appearance after missing some playing time because of an injury. The youngster couldn’t do much against Madrid defender Álvaro Carreras throughout the match at the Bernabeu.
Mbappé increased his league-leading tally to 11 goals in a breakaway, calmly finding the net with only Szczesny to beat after a nice through ball by Bellingham. It was Mbappé’s 16th goal in his last 13 matches with club and country.
Rashford’s assist
Barcelona equalized after a mistake by Madrid midfielder Arda Guler, who lost possession near the area to allow Marcus Rashford to make a run through the left side and find López for an easy strike from close range.
Bellingham put Madrid ahead again five minutes later, finding the open net from near the goal line after Madrid defender Éder Militão headed the ball toward the goal following another nice run and cross by Vinícius.
Bellingham, who missed the first part of the season because of a shoulder injury, had scored his first goal of the season on Wednesday in Madrid’s 1-0 win over Juventus in the Champions League. He was also involved in the play that led to the missed penalty by Mbappé — a handball by Barcelona defender Eric García as he tried to contain Bellingham inside the area.
Mbappé had another goal called off for offside in first-half stoppage time.
Early penalty reversed by VAR
Madrid was awarded a penalty two minutes into the game after a run by Vinícius inside the area but the call was reversed after video review. Vinícius went down after he kicked Yamal’s leg while trying to get a shot on goal. The referee initially called a foul on Vinícius but changed his mind after looking at the play again.
Madrid thought it had opened the scoring about 10 minutes later when Mbappé found the net with a long-range shot, but VAR came in again to rule that he was offside when he received the ball.
Pedri was sent off deep into second-half stoppage time after a sliding tackle on Aurélien Tchouaméni.
Redemption for Madrid
Madrid was outscored 16-7 as it lost all clasicos last season across all competitions. It was the first time Barcelona won every clasico in a season that had at least three matches between the rivals.
Barcelona arrived Sunday with injury woes in attack, and coach Hansi Flick had to watch the game from a stadium box after he was shown a red card for protesting in the previous round of games. Striker Robert Lewandowski was out with a hamstring injury and forward Raphinha stayed on the injury list because of a right leg ailment sustained in late September. Playmaker Dani Olmo and first-choice goalkeeper Joan García had already been ruled out due to injuries.
Raphinha, who was among those involved in the altercation at the end of the match, netted five of the 16 goals that Barcelona scored in the four matches against Madrid last season.
Other results
Mallorca drew 1-1 with Levante, while Celta Vigo won 3-2 at Osasuna with Pablo Duran scoring an 87th-minute winner.
Rayo Vallecano beat Alaves 1-0 with Alemão’s stoppage-time goal.

Arsenal extend Premier League lead as Man City lose at Villa
  • Bournemouth are now the Gunners’ closest challengers in second after they beat Nottingham Forest 2-0
  • Spurs captain Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham inflicted Everton’s first defeat at the new Hill Dickinson Stadium

LONDON: Arsenal stretched their Premier League lead to four points as Eberechi Eze’s goal beat his former club Crystal Palace 1-0, while Manchester City lost 1-0 at Aston Villa on Sunday.

Bournemouth are now the Gunners’ closest challengers in second after they beat Nottingham Forest 2-0, while Tottenham climbed to third after a 3-0 win at Everton.

After Liverpool’s latest defeat to Brentford on Saturday, Arsenal enjoyed the perfect weekend as both their title rivals fell further behind as they go from strength to strength.

Eze left the Eagles to join Arsenal in a £60 million ($80 million) deal in August and his first Premier League goal was decisive as Mikel Arteta’s men were again able to lean on their set-piece prowess and a solid defense.

The England international blasted in on the volley after Palace failed to clear Declan Rice’s free-kick six minutes before half-time.

Arsenal again failed to hit top gear going forward, but didn’t need to as they kept a 10th clean sheet in 13 games in all competitions this season.

“The technique from Eze is unbelievable. We needed something special,” said Arteta.

“We didn’t score a second goal and when you don’t do that you are in danger, but we restricted them to very little.”

The only concern for Arteta was the sight of Rice and William Saliba having to be replaced in the second half due to injury.

Arsenal now lead fifth-placed City by six points and have a seven-point cushion over Liverpool in seventh.

- Haaland streak ends -

City appeared to be emerging as Arsenal’s biggest obstacle in the title race after a nine-game unbeaten run.

But Pep Guardiola’s men lost at Villa Park for the third consecutive season as Erling Haaland’s 12-game scoring streak came to an end.

Matty Cash’s stunning strike from outside the box on 19 minutes secured a fourth consecutive league win for Villa as Unai Emery’s men climb to seventh.

Haaland had a late goal ruled out for offside, but City’s lack of goal threat other than the Norwegian finally cost the visitors.

No City player other than Haaland has scored in the Premier League for a month.

“We were not aggressive enough,” said a disappointed Guardiola.

Spurs captain Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham inflicted Everton’s first defeat at the new Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Pape Mate Sarr added a third late on to continue Tottenham’s strong start under Thomas Frank.

Bournemouth climbed up to second as Forest’s struggles continued despite a change in management.

Sean Dyche got his reign off to a winning start against Porto in the Europa League on Thursday, but Forest remain in the bottom three after they were convincingly beaten on the south coast.

Marcus Tavernier opened the scoring for the Cherries directly from a corner as the swirling wind caught out Matz Sels.

Eli Junior Kroupi then blasted in his fourth goal in six Premier League games to double Bournemouth’s lead.

Wolves remain bottom of the table after Burnley edged a 3-2 thriller in stoppage time at Molineux thanks to Lyle Foster.

Zian Flemming’s double put the visitors 2-0 up inside 30 minutes but Wolves hit back before half-time through Jorgen Strand Larsen and Marshall Munetsi.

Foster’s late strike propelled the Clarets five points clear of the relegation zone and left Wolves now six points adrift of safety.
