DOHA: Iran launched six missiles toward US bases in Qatar on Monday, according to reports, as the sound of several explosions were heard over Doha.

Axios had earlier reported that Iran was preparing to fire missiles at the bases.

Explosions were reported in the Qatari capital by Reuters and AFP witnesses, following Tehran’s threats to retaliate against US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites over the weekend.

Qatar announced it had closed its air space temporarily to ensure the safety of residents and visitors. Earlier, the US embassy in Qatar had advised Americans to shelter in place, out of what it said was “an abundance of caution.”

"The White House and the Department of Defense are aware of, and closely monitoring, potential threats to Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar," a senior White House official said.
