  • Adventurous Muslims challenge themselves by walking, cycling, riding and sailing to Hajj
  • Horseriders take seven months to make journey from Spain to Makkah聽

RIYADH: While some worshippers choose to travel to Hajj in comfort, others see the pilgrimage as an opportunity to test their physical and spiritual fortitude.

Following in the long tradition of epic journeys that led the faithful of history to Makkah, adventurous Muslims today are challenging themselves in a variety of ways.

This year, three friends on horseback rode more than 8,000 kilometers over seven months from the south of Spain to 海角直播 to complete the Islamic rites in the holy capital.

Their route retraced a historic one first trod by Andalusian Muslims living in Europe more than 500 years ago.

Abdelkader Harkassi, Abdallah Hernandez and Tariq Rodriguez travelled through Spain, France, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Turkiye, Syria and Jordan before crossing into 海角直播鈥檚 Northern Borders region and making their way to Makkah.

Hernandez told Arab News that the ride was a 鈥渢rip of challenges where every step (was) felt by us and the horses, but (was) also a journey for the soul.鈥

The riders set off with limited funds and were supported by Muslims that they met along the way.

Another group of worshippers took to the seas, taking about two months to sail more than 7,400km from London to Makkah.

Abdul Wahid, Tauseef Ahmed, Jody McIntyre, Dobbir Uddin and Taher Akhtar from London had no previous sailing experience before training for the maritime mission.

Speaking to Arab News, Wahid, 38, said he was inspired by the combination of influences of his Muslim faith and the maritime history of the UK.

鈥淚t is kind of merging our religion Islam with the country (where) we are residing, and reviving this long-forgotten way to Hajj,鈥 he said.

In June 2022, British pilgrim Adam Mohammed arrived in Makkah after setting off from his home in Wolverhampton, UK 11 months earlier and 6,500km away.

He walked through the Netherlands, Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, and Jordan to reach 海角直播.

Mohammed told Arab News at the time that, while studying the Qu鈥檙an during COVID-19 lockdowns, he felt a spiritual calling inviting him on the journey.

鈥淪uddenly, I woke up one day and something inside me told me to go to Makkah all the way by foot from my home,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 could not ignore this voice and decided to go for it.鈥

Pulling a 250kg cart in which he slept, prepared food and kept his personal belongings, Mohammed said that there were 鈥渘o big difficulties鈥 on his travels, and that he was undertaking the challenge for religion and not for fame.

Nabil Ennasri, a French pilgrim of Moroccan origin, cycled more than 5,000km to reach Makkah for the 2023 Hajj season.

He began his journey in Paris and crossed 11 countries including Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Greece, Jordan and Turkiye.

The 41-year-old wanted to revive the traditional pilgrimage experience and use his trip to raise awareness for global warming.

Ennasri was able to retrace the historical journey taken by Muslims, and some of his own relatives, in the past.

鈥淪ome members of my family also traveled on foot. It could have taken months or even years. Some lost their lives during the journey,鈥 he said.

鈥淲hen I remember these moments, I find the strength in me.鈥

Explaining the significance of his journey, he added: 鈥淢y first objective is to explain global warming; it is very important for our children and future generations.

鈥淢y second goal is to understand what kind of difficulties people (experienced) on pilgrimage in ancient times, to understand their long journeys on foot.鈥

The trip was reminiscent of those carried out by millions of Muslims over the centuries, most of whom would have to have endured far greater hardships than travelers today.

Perhaps history鈥檚 most well-known Muslim explorer, Ibn Battuta, set off from his native Morocco in 1325 and did not return for another 24 years.

He ended up discovering a love of travelling, reaching as far as China, but the first leg of his journey was to the holy capital to perform Hajj.

In 2020, a Moroccan named Ghulam Yassin arrived in Makkah after retracing much of Ibn Battuta鈥檚 original journey.

Yassin travelled on foot and by bicycle for four years to perform Hajj 鈥 one of the five essential pillars of Islam.

Generous Saudis were so inspired by his journey that they pledged to cover the cost of his pilgrimage the following year.

In June 2022, Indian pilgrim Shihab Chottur arrived in Makkah after walking 8,600km from his home in Malappuram, Kerala.

Chottur, who was 31 at the time, set off on foot carrying 12kg of luggage with $8,500 in his pocket.

He passed through Pakistan, Iran, Iraq and Kuwait, and a year later arrived in the Kingdom.

The money he brought with him turned out not to be needed, because the Saudi government and Indian consulate decided to sponsor his Hajj.

Instead, the shop owner used it to pay for his mother to complete the pilgrimage the following year.

The Hajj pilgrimage is mandatory for all Muslims who are physically and financially able to complete it at least once in their life.

While the Saudi authorities continue to make the process more accessible and comfortable for all believers, including those with mobility issues, every year physically demanding journeys such as these remind us of the difficulties of performing Hajj in the past.聽

King Salman orders Saudi officials to aid stranded Iranian Hajj pilgrims
  • Directive issued after authorities in Tehran close their airspace following attack by Israel said to have targeted Iranian nuclear sites, nuclear scientists and military chiefs
  • Plan for the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah to provide help to the stranded pilgrims presented to the king by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman

RIYADH: King Salman on Friday ordered Saudi authorities to ensure that Iranian Hajj pilgrims stranded in the Kingdom receive all necessary support until it is safe for them to return home.

The directive came shortly after Israeli authorities launched early-morning airstrikes against Iran, which they said targeted nuclear sites, nuclear scientists and military chiefs. Tehran closed the country鈥檚 airspace in the aftermath.

The plan to provide help to stranded Iranian pilgrims was presented to the king by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Saudi Press Agency reported. The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has been tasked with ensuring they receive all necessary support.

The annual pilgrimage, a key pillar of Islam that all Muslims are required to complete at least once during their lives if physically and financially able, concluded on Monday. Tens of thousands of Iranians visit 海角直播 for Hajj each year. More than 1.6 million pilgrims from all over the world took part this year and authorities described it as a success.

Iran retaliated to the Israeli attack later on Friday by targeting Tel Aviv with missiles, raising fears of prolonged and more-dangerous exchanges of fire.

  • The crown prince had separate phone calls with Macron and Meloni: SPA

RIYADH: Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Friday talked with the leaders of France and Italy about the latest developments in the region, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

During a phone call, the crown prince and France鈥檚 President Emmanuel Macron discussed the repercussions of Israeli strikes on Iran, which has killed 78 people, including generals and scientists, and wounded 320 others.

Iran retaliated later in the day, raining missiles and weaponized drones on Israeli cities, causing destruction.

In a separate call with Italy鈥檚 Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, the two leaders 鈥渆mphasized the necessity of making every effort to de-escalate the situation, the importance of exercising restraint, and resolving all disputes through diplomatic means,鈥 SPA said.

Earlier in the day, the crown prince spoke with US President Donald J. Trump, during which the duo also stressed the need for continued joint work to achieve security, peace, and stability in the Middle East.

Macron had also announced that because of the Israel-Iran clash, the UN conference on a two-state solution for Israel and the Palestinians that France and 海角直播 planned to co-chair next week in New York had been postponed.

鈥淲hile we have to postpone this conference for logistical and security reasons, it will take place as soon as possible,鈥 he said at a press conference.

  • OceanQuest is a Saudi non-profit focused on deep-sea exploration and global marine science collaborations
  • On its Around Africa Expedition, the foundation emphasized human-centered approaches to conservation

RIYADH: As the curtains closed on this year鈥檚 UN Ocean Conference in the French city of Nice, the Saudi-led foundation OceanQuest emerged as one of the standout contributors to marine sustainability 鈥 not only in policy circles but also in the depths of the world鈥檚 oceans.

Fresh from its pioneering Around Africa Expedition, OceanQuest, in partnership with OceanX, brought remarkable scientific discoveries and a powerful message to UNOC 鈥 that true marine conservation must combine exploration, collaboration, and education.

鈥淭his expedition went around Africa and engaged on-ship around 16 African scientists and more than 200 port stops,鈥 Martin Visbeck, CEO of OceanQuest, told Arab News.

From surveying megafauna by helicopter to exploring seamounts more than 1,000 meters beneath the surface aboard the OceanXplorer, the team used cutting-edge technology and human ingenuity to illuminate previously uncharted ecosystems.

OceanQuest is a Saudi non-profit incubated at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology. It is rapidly becoming a key player in the global marine science arena, dedicated to deep-sea exploration, design innovation, and cross-border collaboration.

DID YOU KNOW?

鈥 OceanQuest is a Saudi non-profit focused on deep-sea exploration and global collaborations in marine science.

鈥 The foundation emphasizes human-centered approaches to conservation by training African scientists and educators.

鈥 Discoveries on its Around Africa Expedition include new seamounts vital for biodiversity and sustainable fisheries.

One of its flagship missions 鈥 the Around Africa Expedition 鈥 offered not only new data but a model of inclusive, equitable marine science.

Using robotic vehicles, manned submersibles, and remote sensing tools, the team made multiple dives during the mission.

In total, they spent 53 hours underwater, collected nearly 90 samples, and mapped thousands of square kilometers of the seabed, including around the Nola Seamounts and Santo Antao Island. Flights over 922 nautical miles provided additional data on large marine animals.

Among the major outcomes was the identification of new underwater seamounts, crucial for fisheries and marine biodiversity.

鈥淲e will be the ones who go to seamount systems and explore what is there, look at the species, look at the functions and understanding, then share that with the community, to provide reasons why certain seamounts should be protected,鈥 said Visbeck.

This insight is critical as countries consider the ratification and implementation of the High Seas Treaty 鈥 formally the Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction agreement 鈥 a major focus at UNOC.

OceanX and OceanQuest have successfully completed their ground-breaking 鈥楢round Africa Expedition,鈥 a collaborative journey that explored Africa鈥檚 vast and diverse marine environments. (Supplied)

鈥淏iodiversity protection beyond national jurisdiction means the protected areas in the high seas, outside of a country鈥檚 own legal role,鈥 said Visbeck.

OceanQuest鈥檚 approach is not just technical 鈥 it is human-centered.

Working alongside top African entities such as the National Research Foundation, the University of Cape Town, and the South African National Biodiversity Institute, the expedition helped build capacity for African marine science.

Twenty-four early-career professionals from across the continent were trained in seafloor mapping, environmental DNA analysis, and deep-sea sampling.

鈥淭his wasn鈥檛 just about what we discovered in the ocean. It was also about who we empowered on the ground,鈥 said Visbeck. 鈥淏y investing in people 鈥 students, young professionals and educators 鈥 we鈥檙e building a foundation for Africa鈥檚 long-term leadership in ocean science.鈥

He sees this collaborative model as a roadmap for future conservation.

鈥淭hese collaborations are the future of ocean science in Africa,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e鈥檝e seen what鈥檚 possible when scientists, governments and regional institutions align behind a common purpose, advancing knowledge, access and opportunity.鈥

This year鈥檚 UNOC provided the perfect platform for OceanQuest to share these achievements and ambitions.

鈥淚 decided that it would be amazing to celebrate and launch OceanQuest and share with the ocean world our arrival on the scene at UNOC,鈥 said Visbeck.

Over 24 participants from several countries, like Ghana, Kenya, Namibia, Nigeria, and South Africa, were able to have a first-hand experience through the Early Career Ocean Professionals program. (Supplied)

鈥淲e are using UNOC to celebrate with our partners, friends and ocean-policy people on the scene and share with them our mission and vision.鈥

In a time of mounting ocean crises 鈥 from plastic pollution to overfishing and climate change 鈥 Visbeck says awareness is a powerful tool.

鈥淲hat we are trying to do is fight ignorance by providing data and information. Once the information is more clear, it can be a basis for regulatory agencies.鈥

From the Red Sea to the high seas, OceanQuest is helping reframe the future of ocean conservation 鈥 not just by mapping the seafloor, but by drawing a new map for global cooperation.
