LISBON, : Arsenal forward Stina Blackstenius struck a late winner as the London team shocked holders Barcelona 1-0 on Saturday to claim their second Women’s Champions League title and first in 18 years to the delight of their 5,000 traveling fans.

Arsenal withstood a flurry of Barca chances before Blackstenius broke the deadlock in the 75th minute.

The Sweden international latched onto fellow substitute Beth Mead’s reverse pass in a crowded area and fired a low diagonal shot past goalkeeper Catalina Coll at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

Renee Slegers’ Gunners, making their second appearance in the final having won Europe’s top club competition in 2007, held on to win against a Barca side going for a third straight Champions League title.

“Amazing,” Arsenal forward Alessia Russo told TNT Sports through tears. “We had to suffer a lot.

“They’re a top side. We knew coming into this game that we’d have to suffer and there would be moments when we wouldn’t have the ball and we would have to be content and happy with not having the ball knowing our moment would come.

“Our squad just wanted it so badly.”

The Arsenal players stood arm-in-arm in front of their red-clad fans after the final whistle singing along to Queen’s “We are the Champions.”

The win comes against a mighty Barcelona team considered on paper to be the best in the world.

Barca midfielder Aitana Bonmati called the loss “absolutely devastating.”

“I don’t believe it,” the 2023 and ‘24 women’s Ballon d’Or winner told Catalan TV. “I just want to start the game again and do it differently. Personally, this hurts me a lot.”

Barcelona were playing in their sixth final in seven years and had hoisted the trophy in three of the past four campaigns. Saturday’s reverse was just their fourth loss of the season across all competitions.

HUGE UNDERDOGS

Arsenal might have arrived as huge underdogs but had proved in their comeback win over Lyon in the semifinals — they lost 2-1 at home before roaring back with a 4-1 away victory in the second leg — that they were not afraid of that tag.

They almost went ahead in the first half when Frida Maanum sprang free on the right wing and Barca defender Irene Paredes slid to divert her low cross into the net for an apparent own goal. However, a VAR check showed Maanum was offside.

Arsenal’s defense stood strong as Barcelona had 20 attempts to the Gunners’ eight, including two long-range Ona Batlle shots that sailed just over the bar, as well as 12 corners to two.

“We knew it was going to be a game of momentum shifts because we respect Barcelona, we know how good they are on the ball but we also know how good we are,” Slegers told TNT, through a voice hoarse from celebrating.

“So we knew that momentum was going to shift. Maybe other people were thinking something else, but that’s what we believed. In all the phases that happened in the game, the mentality we showed, the resilience we showed, the effectiveness in all our actions, our belief, it was incredible.”

Blackstenius almost struck a couple of minutes before her goal but Coll stuck out a leg to stop her shot from 12 meters.

Leah Williamson, who was outstanding in defense, was a mascot at Arsenal’s 2007 victory over Sweden’s Umea.

“A lot of this team have been together for a long time and to be able to do it on the biggest day, some people had the game of their lives,” she said. “I’m so happy. I’m trying not to swear or cry.”

Former F1 driver Felipe Massa brings $85m claim over 2008 title loss to London court
  • Lawyers for the defendants applied Wednesday for the case to be thrown out.
  • Massa, who never won a drivers’ title, believes he was the rightful winner in 2008

LONDON: Felipe Massa’s claim for $85 million in a legal case against Formula One was described in court Wednesday as a “misguided attempt” to reopen the 2008 drivers’ championship that he lost to Lewis Hamilton.
Hamilton’s first F1 title is the subject of civil action in London brought by the Brazilian against former F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone, Formula One Management and the FIA governing body.
Lawyers for the defendants applied Wednesday for the case to be thrown out.
Massa, who never won a drivers’ title, believes he was the rightful winner in 2008. He missed it by a single point after a deliberate crash at the Singapore Grand Prix.
The Renault team staged a win for Fernando Alonso by ordering Nelson Piquet Jr. to crash. That brought out a safety car and led to Massa finishing 13th after his strategy was compromised.
Piquet revealed the next season he had been told by team bosses to crash deliberately.
Ecclestone, the longtime F1 boss before being ousted in 2017, suggested two years ago the sport’s executives were aware of the cover-up during the 2008 campaign.
Massa was at the High Court to bring claims for breach of contract or duty and loss of earnings and sponsorship. His lawyers say Ecclestone knew the crash was deliberate and that he and the FIA failed to investigate it.
In written submissions, Ecclestone’s lawyer David Quest said Massa’s claims “are a misguided attempt to reopen the results of the 2008 F1 drivers’ championship.”
Representing the FIA, John Mehrzad said Massa’s claim “conspicuously overlooks a catalogue of his own errors.”
Massa’s lawyer Nick De Marco argued the case should go to a full trial with “a real prospect of succeeding on all of the grounds.”
The hearing before a single judge is due to end Friday. A ruling is likely at a later date.

BARCELONA: Barcelona midfielder Pedri has been diagnosed with a muscle tear in his left leg, the club confirmed on Wednesday, adding to the LaLiga side’s mounting injury list.

Pedri would also miss Spain’s crucial World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Turkiye in November.
“First team player Pedri has suffered a tear in the distal biceps femoris muscle in his left thigh. The player’s recovery will dictate his return to action,” Barcelona said in a statement.
The injury compounds Barcelona’s struggles, with 12 players sidelined since the start of the season.
Key absentees include Robert Lewandowski, Gavi, Raphinha, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, and Dani Olmo.
Barca are second in LaLiga with 22 points, trailing leaders Real Madrid by five points.

Arsenal depth fuels Saka’s belief in Premier League title charge
  • Saka is among the Arsenal stars, also including Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz and William Saliba, to have already been sidelined by injury at times this season
  • “This year I feel we’re a very strong group and we’ve got a lot of quality,” Saka told Sky Sports

LONDON: Bukayo Saka believes Arsenal’s strength in depth can be the difference for the Gunners this season as they look to end a wait since 2003/04 to win the Premier League.
Mikel Arteta’s men are four points clear at the top of the table from Bournemouth, with their realistic title challengers Manchester City and Liverpool six and seven points adrift respectively.
Arsenal have finished second for each of the past three seasons when injury problems at times derailed their title challenge.
However, Arteta now has a far deeper pool of resources to call on after a £250 million ($333 million) spend on eight sigings during the transfer window.
Saka is among the Arsenal stars, also including Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz and William Saliba, to have already been sidelined by injury at times this season.
But Arteta’s side have relied on their strength from set pieces and an excellent defensive record to win seven consecutive games in all competitions.
“This year I feel we’re a very strong group and we’ve got a lot of quality. We’ve suffered already a lot of injuries, but the players that have come in have shown that we can all keep the level at the highest,” Saka told Sky Sports.
“I think that’s where we’ve slipped off in a few seasons, but this season, we’ve got that and it’s making me really believe we can do it.”
Next year could be a memorable one for Saka as he also aims to end England’s long wait since 1966 to win a major tournament at the World Cup.
“That’s my prayer. Of course it is doable,” he added on the prospect of a Premier League and World Cup double in 2026.
“You can’t really do anything if you don’t believe in it. I believe it is possible. It won’t be easy, definitely won’t be easy, but yeah it is possible.”
Saka was part of the England sides that lost two European Championship finals under Gareth Southgate.
The Three Lions are the only European side to qualify so far for the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico after a flawless start to their qualifying campaign since Thomas Tuchel took charge.
Saka has been impressed by Tuchel and hopes his experience at the highest level of the club game with Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Bayern Munich can be key to England’s chances.
“I think he is a top coach, tactical understanding and with people as well he is very demanding, he knows how to get the best out of the players I would say,” said the 24-year-old.
“He has shown in the past he can win at the highest level and won the biggest of trophies. He has competed in many finals as well, so he has definitely got the experience and hopefully he can guide us to victory.”
