  • Saudi aims for 30 percent EV adoption in five years
  • Tesla plans online orders, pop-up stores, and charging stations

RIYADH: Tesla launched operations in 海角直播 on Thursday, a sign that CEO Elon Musk has patched up relations with the Kingdom and that the oil capital was moving forward with an ambitious electric-vehicle policy.

A Tesla Cybertruck and a redesigned Model Y sedan dominated a plaza dotted with palm trees, as the EV maker officially opened for business.

A small crowd tried out the vehicles as a massive outdoor video screen showed a Cybertruck plowing through a dusky desert, leaving behind plumes of sand.

Tesla needs new customers: globally, it posted a 13 percent drop in first-quarter sales, its weakest performance in nearly three years, driven by a backlash against Musk鈥檚 role in the Trump administration, rising competition and an aging product lineup, beyond the refreshed Model Y.

The Kingdom, a major investor in Tesla rival Lucid, aims for 30 percent EV adoption five years from now, up from about 1 percent last year.

Musk engaged in a high-profile feud with the Kingdom鈥檚 sovereign wealth fund over a potential investment nearly a decade ago, but relations between Riyadh and Musk have improved since he took a high-profile role in US President Donald Trump鈥檚 election campaign and administration.

Trump is set to visit 海角直播 in the coming weeks in his first foreign trip. Local Tesla executives at the launch described plans to allow online ordering of vehicles, open pop-up stores in malls and to build Supercharger stations and service centers, but Musk did not show up in person or by video.

鈥淚鈥檓 honestly very disappointed I cannot see him,鈥 said fan Mohammed Usama, who said he was 鈥渋n love鈥 with the Cybertruck. 鈥淚 was very close to the stage, but unfortunately he didn鈥檛 come.鈥

Saudi has a long way to go to hit its EV goals. The country鈥檚 main east-west highway does not have a single charging station in the 900-kilometer (559 mile) stretch linking the financial and religious cities of Riyadh and Makkah.

海角直播 in 2024 had just 101 EV charging stations, compared with 261 in neighboring UAE, a country with a third the population, data from Statista based on Electromaps showed. Tesla plans to put its first charging stations in three cities.

Rival EV brands like China鈥檚 BYD and Zeekr, along with the Saudi Public Investment Fund-backed Lucid, already have Saudi beachheads.

The feud between Musk and the governor of the Kingdom鈥檚 sovereign wealth fund began when Musk tweeted in 2018 that he had 鈥渇unding secured鈥 to take Tesla private after a meeting with the fund.

That led to a lawsuit from investors when a bid failed to materialize. 鈥淵ou are throwing me under the bus,鈥 Musk wrote in a text to fund chief Yasir Al-Rumayyan, according to court documents.

Shortly after the US presidential election, Trump, Rumayyan, and Musk were all pictured together sitting in ringside seats at an Ultimate Fighting Championship event in an early signal that relations had healed.

JEDDAH: 海角直播鈥檚 Public Investment Fund-backed Savvy Games Group has signed a partnership with fellow portfolio firm Humain to deploy full-stack artificial intelligence across operations, strengthening the Kingdom鈥檚 emerging innovation ecosystem.

The memorandum of understanding will see Savvy leverage Humain鈥檚 AI systems, data platforms, infrastructure, and applications to enhance efficiency across key functions including human resources, procurement, and finance, the companies said in a joint statement.

The two firms will also collaborate on research and development and explore new AI applications across Savvy鈥檚 business lines. Humain will provide access to its advanced data centers and cloud computing services, supporting Savvy鈥檚 digital transformation and productivity goals.

The Kingdom is actively building its capabilities by integrating artificial intelligence across various sectors, hosting AI-focused events, forging partnerships with global tech leaders, and investing in local talent development.

These efforts aim to drive economic growth, build a digitally advanced society, and reinforce 海角直播鈥檚 AI leadership.

Brian Ward, CEO at Savvy Games Group, said: 鈥淲e are looking forward to working with Humain to identify and unlock ways that would enhance the way we utilize AI at Savvy.鈥

He added: 鈥淗umain operates across the entire AI value chain from data and infrastructure to models and end-user application, so there are a lot of opportunities for us to look at and create tangible programs of activities.鈥

His counterpart at Humain, Tareq Amin, said: 鈥淭his partnership comes at an exciting time with the recent launch of Humain One at FII9. This agentic AI operating system is a game changer, and we are thrilled to have Savvy as one of the early adopters.鈥

Amin added that game development is among the most dynamic sectors where leveraging AI solutions can significantly enhance both creativity and productivity.

The partnership exemplifies the power of collaboration between PIF鈥檚 portfolio companies 鈥 exchanging knowledge, aligning strategic capabilities, and unlocking shared value, the release added.

These synergies support PIF鈥檚 AI and digital economy strategy by positioning 海角直播 as a globally competitive hub for innovation and talent development, fostering the growth and diversification of the domestic economy.

Savvy Games has positioned itself as a key driver of the Kingdom鈥檚 gaming and esports sector. In its 2024 annual report, the company highlighted strong growth across three main pillars: game development and publishing, esports, and ecosystem building.

A centerpiece of its activities was the Esports World Cup held in Riyadh, which drew 2,000 players from 200 clubs competing for a $70 million prize pool across 24 game titles, underscoring Savvy鈥檚 commitment to expanding 海角直播鈥檚 footprint in competitive gaming.

Meanwhile, Humain recently reached a $3 billion agreement with Asia-Pacific data center provider AirTrunk, backed by Blackstone and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, to develop a large-scale AI-ready data center campus in the Kingdom.

Under this deal, Humain will lead 海角直播鈥檚 efforts to deliver advanced AI infrastructure, while AirTrunk and its global partners contribute operational expertise and investment capacity.

The initiative aligns with the company鈥檚 mandate to position the Kingdom as a global AI leader and reinforces its commitment to building best-in-class digital and AI capabilities.

It was announced in October that energy giant Saudi Aramco has signed a non-binding term sheet to acquire a significant minority stake in Humain.

The proposed deal will see both Aramco and PIF contribute AI-related assets, capabilities, and talent to help scale Humain鈥檚 operations and capture new value in the rapidly expanding data and AI sector, according to a joint statement from the companies.
