  • Israeli defense minister says large areas in Gaza would be seized and added to Israel's security zones
  • Israel resumed air strikes on Gaza and sent ground troops back this month after fragile truce collapsed

JERUSALEM: Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced a major expansion of the military operation in Gaza on Wednesday, saying large areas of the enclave would be seized and added to the security zones of Israel.
In a statement, Katz said there would be large-scale evacuation of population from areas where there is fighting, and urged Gazans to eliminate Hamas and return Israeli hostages as the only way to end the war.
He did not make clear how much land Israel intends to seize, however.

Gaza rescuers say 15 killed in Israeli strikes on two houses

Gaza’s civil defense agency said Israeli air strikes on two houses in the war-ravaged Palestinian territory on Wednesday killed at least 15 people, including children.
ā€œThirteen martyrs, including children, were killed at dawn when occupation forces (the Israeli army) bombed a house sheltering displaced people in central Khan Yunis, in southern Gaza,ā€ civil defense spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP, adding two other people were kiled in an Israeli strike on a house in the Nuseirat camp, in central Gaza.
Israel has already set up a significant buffer zone within Gaza, expanding an area that existed around the edges of the enclave before the war and adding a large security area in the so-called Netzarim corridor through the middle of Gaza.
At the same time, Israeli leaders have said they plan to facilitate voluntary departure of Palestinians from the enclave, after US President Donald Trump called for it to be permanently evacuated and redeveloped as a coastal resort under US control.
Israel resumed air strikes on Gaza and sent ground troops back in this month, after two months of relative calm following the conclusion of a US-backed truce to allow the exchange of hostages held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.
Efforts led by Qatari and Egyptian mediators to get back on tracks talks aimed at ending the war have failed to make progress yet.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said the application of military pressure is the best way to get the remaining 59 hostages back.

  • Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said in a post on X that an Iranian attempt to attack Israeli citizens in Cyprus was thwarted

NICOSIA: Police in Cyprus have arrested a British man on suspicion of terror-related offenses and espionage, authorities said on Saturday, with Israel accusing Iran’s Revolutionary Guards of trying to attack Israeli citizens on the island.

The man appeared before a district court on Saturday, which ordered an eight-day detention pending inquiries.

Police gave no further details, citing national security.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said in a post on X that an Iranian attempt to attack Israeli citizens in Cyprus was thwarted, ā€œthanks to the activity of the Cypriot security authorities, in cooperation with Israeli security services.ā€

He gave no more details about the nature of the attack, and there was no immediate comment from Iranian authorities.

A spokesperson for Britain’s Foreign Office confirmed the individual’s nationality, saying it was in contact with local authorities.

ā€œWe are in contact (with) the authorities in Cyprus regarding the arrest of a British man,ā€ the spokesperson told Reuters.

Several Cypriot news outlets reported the suspect was a man of Azeri ethnic descent and had been arrested in the Zakaki suburb of the coastal city of Limassol. The suspect was thought to have had a British RAF military base in nearby Akrotiri under surveillance, as well as Cyprus’s own Andreas Papandreou Air Base in the western region of Paphos since mid-April, Cyprus’s ANT1 news portal reported.

Cyprus lies very close to the Middle East and has in recent days been used as a transit point for people either leaving or going to the region amid the conflict between regional foes Israel and Iran.

Terror-related offenses on the island are very rare.

  • ā€œThere was no nuclear material at this site and therefore the attack on it will have no radiological consequences,ā€ Grossi said

VIENNA: The UN nuclear agency confirmed on Saturday that a centrifuge manufacturing workshop at Iran’s Isfahan nuclear site had been hit, in the latest strike amid Israel’s bombing campaign.

ā€œA centrifuge manufacturing workshop has been hit in Esfahan, the third such facility that has been targeted in Israel’s attacks on Iran’s nuclear-related sites over the past week,ā€ the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in a statement quoting its chief Rafael Grossi.

ā€œWe know this facility well. There was no nuclear material at this site and therefore the attack on it will have no radiological consequences,ā€ Grossi was quoted as saying.

  • ā€œIsrael is now leading the region to the brink of total disaster,ā€ Fidan said
  • He called for an end to the ā€œunlimited aggressionā€ against Iran

ISATANBUL: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Saturday accused Israel of leading the Middle East toward ā€œtotal disasterā€ by attacking Iran on June 13.

ā€œIsrael is now leading the region to the brink of total disaster by attacking Iran, our neighbor,ā€ he told a summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul.

ā€œThere is no Palestinian, Lebanese, Syrian, Yemeni or Iranian problem but there is clearly an Israeli problem,ā€ Fidan said.

He called for an end to the ā€œunlimited aggressionā€ against Iran.

ā€œWe must prevent the situation from deteriorating into a spiral of violence that would further jeopardize regional and global security,ā€ he added.

Speaking after Fidan, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accused Western leaders of providing ā€œunconditional supportā€ to Israel.

He said Turkiye would not allow borders in the Middle East to be redrawn ā€œin blood.ā€

ā€œIt is vital for us to show more solidarity to end Israel’s banditry — not only in Palestine but also in Syria, in Lebanon and in Iran,ā€ he told the OIC’s 57 member countries.

The OIC, founded in 1969, says its mission is to ā€œsafeguard and protect the interests of the Muslim world in the spirit of promoting international peace and harmony.ā€
