Pereira the last-gasp hero for Al-Ittihad
  • He grabs 2 goals in injury time to secure a 3-2 victory over Al-Shabab and clinch a place in the King鈥檚 Cup final for the first time in 6 years

Danilo Pereira was the hero, grabbing two goals in injury time, as Al-Ittihad defeated Al-Shabab 3-2 in a thrilling King鈥檚 Cup semi-final on Tuesday. They will face either Al-Qadsiah or Al-Raed, who play on Wednesday, in the final next month.

It was a thrilling tie. A penalty converted by Fabinho early in the first half seemed to put Al-Ittihad on course for a place in the final of 海角直播鈥檚 premier domestic cup competition for the 19th time, and the chance to lift the trophy for the 10th time. But Al-Shabab had other ideas, scoring twice in the space of three minutes after the break to turn the tie on its head.

There was still time for a dramatic late twist, however, that means the prospect of the league and cup double remains very much alive for the Jeddah giants.

There were only 14 minutes on the clock when the Tigers took the lead. Al-Shabab defender Robert Renan brought down Abdulrahman Al-Oboud in the area, former Liverpool star Fabinho stepped up to take the spot kick and kept his cool to put his team ahead.

The only other highlight of the first half was another of the famous 鈥渢ifo鈥 visual displays from Al-Ittihad鈥檚 fans. It featured an image of star striker Karim Benzema wielding a hammer, inviting him to smash the opposition.

Things did not quite work out that way, however, as Al-Shabab fought back. In the 64th minute, Cristian Guanca picked up possession 30 yards from goal and unleashed a spectacular shot into the top corner. Three minutes later, Yannick Carrasco floated over a cross to the far post and Guanca struck again, this time heading home.

Al-Shabab seemed headed for a famous win and things were still looking good for them when the 90-minute mark ticked by.

But then, as the prospect of a fourth successive semi-final defeat loomed for Al-Ittihad, Pereira intervened. His first goal came in the 92nd minute. Benzema had a big part to play in it, greeting a corner kick with a header directed toward the top corner of the net. The attempt was saved but Pereira was well placed to head home the rebound.

Six minutes later and the comeback was complete. It began with another corner, which this time bounced off a defender in the crowded area but Pereira was there again, waiting to pounce and fire in the winner from close range, breaking Al-Shabab hearts and sending Al-Ittihad into the final for the first time in six years.

India again refuse handshake with Pakistan at Asia Cup
  • India won the toss, opted to field first in the Super Four match at the Dubai International Stadium
  • India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have qualified for the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup

DUBAI: India captain Suryakumar Yadav once again chose not to shake hands with Pakistan skipper Salman Ali Agha at the toss ahead of their Asia Cup match on Sunday, as animosity between the bitter rivals rumbled on at the eight-team tournament.

The Asia Cup has been dominated by headlines about India and Pakistan鈥檚 first meetings on the pitch since the military conflict between the nuclear-armed neighbors in May this year.

India won the politically-charged Group A match by seven wickets last week, and their players refused to shake hands with their Pakistan opponents after the match.

Suryakumar dedicated India鈥檚 victory to their armed forces, while several of his teammates took to social media to express similar thoughts.

Furious Pakistan considered withdrawing from the tournament to protest against match referee Andy Pycroft, who they say condoned unsportsmanlike behavior by India.

They delayed their match against United Arab Emirates by an hour on Wednesday and only went ahead with the game after an apology from Pycroft and the assurance of an inquiry by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

India won the toss and opted to field first in the Super Four match at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in the United Arab Emirates.

India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have qualified for the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup. The final will be played on September 28.

  • Franchises can spend between $1.5m and $2m to build their squads, with a minimum purse of $800,000 available on the day聽
  • Auction is in Dubai on Oct. 1 at the Four Seasons Hotel, Jumeirah Beach

DUBAI: The much-anticipated DP World ILT20 Season 4 Player Auction will be held in Dubai on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2025, at the Four Seasons Hotel, Jumeriah Beach.

The auction will bring together all six franchises as they look to complete their squads for the upcoming season, following their retention picks that were announced in July. The season will kick off on Dec. 2, 2025 and conclude on Jan. 4, 2026.

The event will be the DP World ILT20鈥檚 first player auction, a landmark moment in the league鈥檚 journey.

Auction rules

Each franchise will have a purse of $800,000 to spend at the auction plus whatever spend remains unused from the $1.2 million that was available for direct signings and retentions.

At the end of the auction, each franchise must have spent a minimum of $1.5m and a maximum of $2m. They may also spend an additional $250,000 on as many as two wildcard players outside the auction.

All franchises must have a minimum of 19 players and a maximum of 21 players by the end of the auction (excluding wildcards). Within this there must be a minimum of 11 players from ICC Full Member countries, four from the UAE, one from Kuwait, one from 海角直播 and two from other ICC Associate Nations.

Player registration

The minimum base price for all players is $10,000. Players may also have a base price of $40,000 or $80,000.

The DP World ILT20 player registrations were completed between July and September.

The final list of available players will be circulated to franchises before the auction.

If a player is injured, receives an international call-up or does not receive a no-objection certificate, they may be replaced at any time until the end of the league phase of DP World ILT20 Season 4. Replacement players do not need to have been featured in the player auction.

Auction mechanics

Players will be allocated sets on account of status (i.e. full member/associate player/UAE player/Kuwait player/海角直播 player) and specialisation. DP World ILT20 may at its discretion determine to group players by whether they are capped or uncapped and may include a marquee set(s). Full member players will be drawn first.

Within the sets, players will be drawn at random, and the auctioneer will read out the player鈥檚 name and his base price. The auctioneer will then invite bids until there are no further bids. Following the conclusion of all sets, if franchises still have room in their squad, they may request players who have not been signed to return to the auction (accelerated rounds).

Once all franchises have spent their minimum total spend and have fulfilled their minimum quotas for each type of player and do not wish to sign any more players, the auction will be concluded.

UAE player Right to Match

Franchises can exercise one Right to Match option for a UAE player that has been in their development squad or has played for them in DP World ILT20 Season 3.

This can only be used once in the auction. Only UAE players are eligible for the Right to Match option.

鈥業鈥檓 here to win games, lift trophies鈥: Josko Gvardiol eyes more glory with Manchester City
  • Pep Guardiola鈥檚 team face Arsenal on Sunday night hoping to reassert their Premier League credentials after a difficult last campaign

MANCHESTER: When Manchester City ended last season without a major trophy for the first time since 2017, it led to intense debate and conjecture about the club鈥檚 direction.

With Liverpool claiming the Premier League title in impressive fashion and spending big this summer, Arsenal have emerged as the side most likely to stop Arne Slot鈥檚 side from becoming the dominant force as City had been.

Yet despite a horrific run of just one win in 13 games, Pep Guardiola鈥檚 men rallied in the previous campaign to finish third in the table and claim a coveted Champions League place amid fierce competition. That provided hope at the start of a new era.

With an overhaul of the squad, icons such as Kevin de Bruyne, Kyle Walker, Ilkay Gundogan and Ederson departed, while Omar Marmoush, Rayan Ait-Nouri and France attacker Rayan Cherki were among the new arrivals.

Italy keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma also joined from Paris Saint-Germain, where he helped the French side win their first Champions League.

For defender Josko Gvardiol, the changes mean it may take time to shape their future, but the ambition remains the same for a club that won an unprecedented four league titles in a row and the 2023 Champions League.

鈥淚鈥檓 here to win the games, to lift the trophies as well,鈥 said the 23-year-old. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not even a question (of whether) I want to win it. It is and it has to be like this, otherwise, if you don鈥檛 want it, then this is not the place for you.

鈥淏ut I can tell you I see everyone still has the hunger and desire to win everything, too. This is what we need, and this is a bit of what we missed last season. I鈥檓 really happy to see that.鈥

There was concern again when City started sluggishly with two defeats in their opening three league games.

But a 3-0 derby win over Manchester United and a 2-0 success in their Champions League opener against Napoli have lifted confidence before they visit Arsenal today at Emirates Stadium.

Gvardiol 鈥渄oesn鈥檛 read the comments鈥 that have written City off as title contenders, but the Croatia international admitted: 鈥淲e are still not at the level we want to be. We need to build slowly.

鈥淟ast season, it was not the best; we struggled a lot, but you can see we are still together as a team and having good results.

鈥淲e have quality. All we miss is a bit of confidence. The only way to build it back is to go game by game because the season is very long.鈥

Arsenal will have Viktor Gyokeres leading their attack following his summer move from Sporting, where he scored 54 times for the Portuguese club last season.

It included a hat-trick in a 4-1 Champions League win over City during their troubled period.

But the Etihad outfit have their own prolific striker in Norwegian Erling Haaland, who has scored 12 times this term for club and country.

Three have come this week against neighbors United and then Napoli, where he became the fastest player to reach 50 Champions League goals.

Haaland, 25, achieved the feat in 49 games, surpassing Ruud van Nistelrooy鈥檚 record, and is expected to challenge the competition鈥檚 scoring record of 140 held by Al-Nassr鈥檚 Cristiano Ronaldo.

鈥淓verything he does is magic,鈥 added Gvardiol. 鈥淚t鈥檚 so nice to have him up front. I would say they are different, but Gyokeres is a good player. I remember him from the game against Sporting.

鈥淲e struggled and we lost the game. As always, Arsenal is going to be a good game, but we will go there and try to win.

鈥淢ost of their signings are bringing something new, the style of play, but I can also talk about our new signings, and we are more than happy to have them in our team, and they have adapted really quickly.鈥

While Egypt forward Marmoush, Algeria left-back Ait-Nouri and Cherki are currently injured, keeper Donnarumma has immediately proved his worth with clean sheets in his first two games.

鈥淟ook at Gigio,鈥 said Gvardiol. 鈥淚 know when I made my debut, it wasn鈥檛 that easy to accept everything, the rhythm, the pressure, so I want to congratulate him.

鈥淚 know what he did in the Champions League last season. I鈥檝e never seen someone that big in the goal and he can cover everything.

鈥淗e gives the defense confidence. If we are to achieve things, it鈥檚 not just Erling, it鈥檚 about everyone,鈥 he added. 鈥淲e need to trust each other; it鈥檚 the only way we can fight together. If people make mistakes, we are here to support and push each other. That鈥檚 who we are and that鈥檚 why it鈥檚 so special.鈥

Gvardiol鈥檚 return has also helped tighten City鈥檚 defense after a knee injury sidelined him at the Club World Cup, where City were upset 4-3 by Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli in the last 16.

The 23-year-old, who has played at left-back and in central defense, has impressed since his $103 million arrival from RB Leipzig in 2023.

鈥淚f I tell you I want to be at the same level as two years ago, I wouldn鈥檛 be happy,鈥 said Gvardiol. 鈥淓veryone wants to be the best version, but I think I can perform much better than I did in my first year.鈥

  • The 5-1 win over Al-Riyadh means they lead on goal difference from Al-Ittihad, who pulled off a last-gasp win over Al-Najma

RIYADH: Al-Nassr maintained a perfect start to their Saudi Pro League campaign with a 5-1 win over Al-Riyadh at Al-Awwal Park in the 2025-2026 season鈥檚 third round of matches.

With a full haul of nine points from three matches so far, Al-Nassr lead the early season standings on goal difference for the second week running.

It took only six minutes for the home team to take the lead, Joao Felix converting from close range after some excellent wing play from Kingsley Coman.

The second goal came on the half-hour mark when Coman ran through on goal and confidently finished with his right foot past Riyadh goalkeeper Milan Borjan. The lead was extended only three minutes later when Cristiano Ronaldo got in on the act with a goal not dissimilar to Coman鈥檚. This time, the assist came from the Nassr captain鈥檚 Portuguese international colleague Felix.

In the 44th minute, a goal by Felix was overturned by VAR for a foul earlier in the move by Sadio Mane, who received a yellow card for his infraction.

But it did not take long for Al-Nassr to notch up their fourth, man of the match Felix again at the heart of the action to score his second of the night just four minutes after the restart.

Mamadou Sylla pulled one back for Al-Riyadh on 51 minutes with a fine diving header but, even with the majority of the second half still to play, it never looked to be anything other than a consolation for the visitors.

Ronaldo rounded up the scoring in the 78th minute after latching on to Coman鈥檚 lay-off to give Al-Nassr a comprehensive 5-1 win over their city rivals. It was the second time in three SPL matches that the Riyadh giants have scored five goals.

Earlier in the day, Al-Ittihad were moments away from dropping their first points of the season at Al-Najma before N鈥橤olo Kante鈥檚 superb first-time finish secured a last-gasp away win to maintain their perfect start to the season. With a maximum nine points, the reigning champions are second in the table behind Al-Nassr on goal difference.

Al-Qadsiah, who beat Al-Khaleej 2-1 on Friday night, are third with seven points.

In Saturday鈥檚 third match, Al-Hazem were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Al-Fateh.

Mourinho celebrates Benfica return with convincing win
  • Mourinho, who won trophies with Real Madrid, Manchester United, Inter Milan as well as coaching various other sides

AVES, Portugal: Jose Mourinho began his second spell in charge of Benfica with a comfortable 3-0 win at AVS on Saturday.
Heorhiy Sudakov opened the scoring at the end of the first half for the visitors, with Vangelis Pavlidis netting the second from the penalty spot before the hour mark.
Franjo Ivanovic rounded off the rout for Benfica, who moved second in the table, five points behind leaders Porto having played one fewer match.
The veteran Portuguese coach, back at the helm of the Eagles 25 years on, celebrated the third goal furiously, pumping his first and kicking a cone.
The 62-year-old, who also coached Porto in the Portuguese top flight before leaving in 2004 to join Chelsea, will face both those teams within the next 15 days.
Mourinho, who won trophies with Real Madrid, Manchester United, Inter Milan as well as coaching various other sides, was sacked by Fenerbahce in August.
Benfica ousted coach Bruno Lage this week after a surprise defeat in the Champions League by Azerbaijani minnows Qarabag and appointed Mourinho as his replacement on Thursday.
His first spell at the club lasted just 11 games but Mourinho said on his presentation that he was more 鈥渕ature鈥 and 鈥渁ltruistic鈥 now.
