SAITAMA, Japan:聽海角直播 failed to聽make any significant gains in World Cup qualifying after a聽tame 0-0 draw against聽Japan聽in front of 58,000 fans聽at Saitama Stadium on Tuesday.

Japan controlled the game from the start聽with patient possession football聽and the Saudi team struggled to聽create chances on a cool night in聽Saitama just north of Tokyo.

海角直播 came under early pressure from the Japanese with left winger NAKAMURA Keita giving Saudi full back Muhannad Al Shanqiti a torrid time on 海角直播鈥檚 left flank.

The Japanese team played controlled football with short passes and always had a player available. In contrast, the Saudis lacked ideas and when they did manage a break, there was little or no support, making Japan鈥檚 job of defending easy.

Japan鈥檚 best chance in the half came in the ninth minute when MAEDA Daizen latched on to a through ball and directed a shot against the right post.

Japan goalkeeper SUZUKI Zion had nothing to do except a single headed clearance outside the box.

Hassan Al Tambakti resorted to launching long balls from the back, but they made little impact on the Japanese defense.

KAMADA Daichi and Nakamura continued to cause problems down 海角直播鈥檚 right side, setting up a couple of half-chances for Maeda who failed to capitalize.

海角直播鈥檚 best chance came in the 22nd聽minute when Nawaf Bu Washl crossed to the far post, but Al Shanqiti鈥檚 header flew over the bar.

KUBO Take fuss managed a couple of breaks down the right wing, but the final ball failed to trouble the Saudi defense.

It was no surprise when聽海角直播 replaced Al Shanqiti聽with聽Ali Hassan Majrashi聽at halftime聽and he managed to leave his mark on Nakamura in the first minute of the half聽as well as making some tough tackles聽on the Japanese winger.

In the聽56th聽minute, TANAKA Ao聽nearly聽caught聽out聽the Saudi defense with聽a聽ball over top,聽but聽it was just beyond the reach of Maeda, who came close again two minutes later.

Saudi manager Herve Renard brought on聽Ziyad Aljohani and Turki Alammar聽in the 60th聽minute while Japan replaced Kubo and SUGAWARA Yukinari with ITO Junya and聽DOAN Ritsu.

A great break by Salem Al Dawsari in the 66th聽minute came聽to nothing as he was crowded out聽and the Saudis continued to struggle to聽create any clearcut chances.

Kamada played in ITO the 82nd minute and聽Nawaf Al Aqidi did well to tip the shot over the bar.聽Three minutes later,聽substitute聽MINAMINO聽Takumi headed just wide from a HATATE Reo cross.

But there was little apparent urgency from both teams and even Japan with all their possession failed to create many clearcut chances.

LONDON: Kylian Mbappe and France are going to the 2026 World Cup. And Cristiano Ronaldo might be banned from Portugal鈥檚 first game there if his team finally win their European qualifying group.

Two goals from star striker Mbappe helped two-time champion France to qualify with a 4-0 home win against Ukraine on Thursday. But Ronaldo was ejected for the first time in his international career and Portugal will have to wait until Sunday to secure a qualifying spot for the seventh straight time after it was stunned 2-0 by Ireland in Dublin.

Midfielder Michael Olize and substitute forward Hugo Ekitike added the other goals in a dominant second half from France, the World Cup runner-up in 2022.

Mbappe sent the penalty straight down the middle to break the deadlock in the 55th minute before Olize turned inside the penalty area to curl home the second goal in the 76th at Parc des Princes in western Paris. Mbapp茅 poked in France鈥檚 third goal from close range in the 83rd following a goal-mouth scramble. Mbappe moved onto 55 goals and just two behind Olivier Giroud as France鈥檚 all-time top scorer.

鈥淭he French national team will always be better with him in it,鈥 coach Didier Deschamps said about Mbapp茅. 鈥淗e makes things easier for us. He performed his role perfectly this evening, as both a player and the captain of the national team.鈥

Mbappe went close to a hat trick moments later but blazed over after going clean through.

France have won Group D with 13 points, Ukraine and Iceland are tied on seven points and will play for second place when they meet on Sunday.

Ronaldo鈥檚 1st international red card

Portugal will host last-place Armenia in the final qualifying game on Sunday, when Hungary host Ireland at the same time.

Portugal top Group F with 10 points, two ahead of Hungary. Ireland are third with seven points.

Ronaldo was sent off for elbowing Ireland defender Dara O鈥橲hea on the hour. The referee issued a yellow card but minutes later upgraded it to red after a video review.

Portugal coach Roberto Martinez said he thought the ejection was 鈥渁 bit harsh,鈥 pointing out that Ronaldo 鈥渉as never been sent off before in 226 games.鈥

Ronaldo will serve a mandatory one-game ban imposed for any red card when Portugal play Armenia. FIFA disciplinary rules require its judges to impose a ban of 鈥渁t least two matches for serious foul play.鈥

Troy Parrott put the hosts ahead with a close-range header following a corner kick in the 17th minute against the run of play with Portugal dominant. Parrott added his second in the final minute before the break, beating Diogo Costa with a low shot from inside the area.

Haaland鈥檚 double

Erling Haaland scored twice as Norway moved closer to qualifying for the World Cup for the first time since 1998 by beating Estonia 4-1 in Oslo.

The win virtually secures a spot for the high-scoring Norwegians in next year鈥檚 tournament in the US, Canada and Mexico.

Italy had to rely on late goals from Gianluca Mancini and substitute Francesco Pio Esposito to win 2-0 at Moldova and is second in Group I, trailing leader Norway by three points.

Italy will likely have to settle for the playoffs where the four-time World Cup champions were eliminated in the past two editions. They host Norway on Sunday and would have to win by a nine-goal margin to directly qualify because of Norway鈥檚 vastly superior goal difference.

Haaland has scored 14 of Norway鈥檚 European-best 33 goals in seven group-stage games. The Manchester City striker was born two years after Norway last reached the World Cup.

Still perfect England

Already-qualified England continued to cruise.

They beat Serbia 2-0 at Wembley Stadium to keep a perfect record in Group K and are yet to concede a goal.

Bukayo Saka fired England ahead on a rebound with a left-foot volley in the 28th after an initial shot by Nico O鈥橰eilly was blocked. Substitute forward Eberechi Eze added the second in the 90th off a pass from another substitute, Phil Foden.

Albania beat Andorra 1-0 in the same group to secure the runner-up spot.
