MILAN: Defending champions Inter Milan missed their chance to move top of Serie A on Sunday after losing 1-0 at Juventus, who boosted thir hopes of a top-four finish.

Francisco Conceiçao scored the only goal in the 74th minute of a high-tempo Derby d’Italia, or Italy’s derby as matches between the two fierce rivals have come to be known.

Inter wasted a number of chances and remained two points behind league leader Napoli, who were held to a 2-2 draw at Lazio on Saturday. Juventus are fourth.

“There’s certainly great regret and disappointment — clearly we should have been better at finishing and scoring goals,” Inter coach Simone Inzaghi said. “Because after a first half like that we should have gone in at the break ahead.

“Then we didn’t approach the second half like the first … we need to work even harder because what we’re doing isn’t enough for what we want to achieve.”

Inter visit Napoli in a potential title-deciding match in two weeks.

“We’ll try to do our best, or at least better than tonight,” Inzaghi said.

Inter had the better of the chances in the first half, with Lautaro Martinez uncharacteristically blazing over the bar from close range when completely unmarked. However, visiting goalkeeper Yann Sommer had to make the most important saves.

Nerazzurri defender Denzel Dumfries also hit the post twice.

But it was Juventus who broke the deadlock with a fantastic assist from new signing Randal Kolo Muani.

The France forward, who had scored five goals in three league matches for Juventus, gathered the ball on the edge of the area and made his way through a crowd of players before tripping. The ball came to Conceiçao, who drove it into the bottom left corner.

Juventus almost doubled their lead two minutes later but Dumfries did brilliantly to clear Teun Koopmeiners’ effort off the line.

Three Thurams

The match had also been dubbed “the Thuram derby” with Marcus Thuram playing for Inter and younger brother Khephren for Juventus.

However, Marcus was recovering from an ankle problem and was only brought on in the 62nd minute, 15 minutes before Khephren was substituted off.

Their dad, Lilian Thuram — who starred as a defender for Juventus and won the World Cup with France in 1998 — was watching from the stands.

Teenage hero

Teenager Assane Diao could very well prove to be Como’s savior.

The 19-year-old scored again on Sunday to set relegation-threatened Como on their way to a 2-0 win at Fiorentina.

It was Diao’s fourth goal in his seven matches since joining from Real Betis last month and the win lifted Cesc Fabregas’ team five points above the drop zone.

Fiorentina were four points below Juventus.

Como broke the deadlock four minutes before halftime with a rapid counterattack. A Fiorentina free kick was headed out of the area when Diao gathered the ball deep inside his own half and raced forward to beat home goalkeeper David De Gea one-on-one.

Nico Paz doubled Como’s lead in the 66th with a shot that took a slight deflection to curl in off the top of the left post.

Game-changing moment

Roma were without injured star forward Paulo Dybala but managed to win 1-0 at 10-man Parma.

The match changed in the 29th minute when teenage Parma defender Giovanni Leoni fouled Roma’s Matías Soule. The referee initially awarded a penalty to the visitors and showed Leoni a yellow card.

However, the video assistant referee confirmed that contact was outside the area so the penalty was rescinded but Leoni’s card was changed to a red as the 18-year-old had prevented a clear scoring opportunity.

To make matters worse for Parma, Soule dinked the resulting free kick over the wall and into the top right corner.

Roma was nine points below the top four, while Parma remained a point from safety.

Empoli occupy that last place of safety despite losing 3-0 at Udinese for their eighth defeat in their past 10 matches.

Alessandro Nesta returned as coach of bottom club Monza last week — two months after he was fired — and managed to end his team’s four-match losing streak with a 0-0 draw against Lecce.

  • Inter are on nine points, three off leaders Napoli who are at AC Milan on Sunday, while Cagliari remain on seven points, dropping to 10th spot
  • Cagliari are the Inter striker’s favorite opponents, with Martinez netting his 12th goal against the hosts, who failed to live up to expectations having lost just once previously this season

CAGLIARI, Italy: Inter Milan earned a 2-0 away win over Cagliari on Saturday thanks to an early goal from Lautaro Martinez and a late strike by substitute Francesco Pio Esposito, and moved up to fifth in the Serie A standings.

Cristian Chivu’s Inter desperately needed a win to avoid losing touch at the top at this early stage of the season, having suffered two losses in their opening four games, and a second successive victory keeps them in touch with their title rivals.

Inter are on nine points, three off leaders Napoli who are at AC Milan on Sunday, while Cagliari remain on seven points, dropping to 10th spot.

The visitors’ job was made easier with a ninth-minute lead when Alessandro Bastoni put a cross into the area and Martinez rose to send his header into the far corner from the edge of the six-yard box.

Cagliari are the Inter striker’s favorite opponents, with Martinez netting his 12th goal against the hosts, who failed to live up to expectations having lost just once previously this season, that defeat coming against champions Napoli.

The opening half was a scrappy, physical affair, constantly interrupted by the referee’s whistle, where Cagliari never threatened Inter’s early lead, with not a single shot, on or off target, registered before the break.

With Inter unable to create any real chances to increase their lead however, the game remained delicately poised going into the second half.

Inter began to turn the screw after the break, Hakan Calhanoglu’s strike from outside the area crashing off the upright, and Marcus Thuram drove through on goal but his effort was saved by keeper Elia Caprile.

Esposito was brought on by Inter, the 20-year-old striker coming up against his older brother Sebastiano.

Sebastiano, on loan at Cagliari from Inter, had a rare chance for the hosts from a corner but his volley attempt at the back post was well off target.

Inter were given a warning about their fragile lead when Michael Folorunsho smashed a header off the post from Esposito’s corner and the visitors duly responded.

Davide Frattesi had a goalbound shot cleared off the line by Cagliari defender Riyad Idrissi and minutes later substitute Esposito scored his first Serie A goal.

Federico Dimarco pulled back the ball from the byline in the area and the unmarked Esposito was there to steer his shot into the back of the net and wrap up the win with eight minutes remaining.

Defensive-minded Arsenal out to squash scoring-limited Newcastle United
  • “We start from our frontline and the amount of pressure and work that they put into any defensive line, any goalkeeper, is tremendous,” Arteta said
  • Newcastle (1-1-3, 6 points) have scored only three goals so far in the league amid the saga that eventually saw Isak move to Liverpool

LONDON: Arsenal will try to continue their strong defensive record on Sunday when they visit a Newcastle United side still struggling to score goals since the departure of Alexander Isak.
Arsenal (3-1-1, 10 points) have allowed just two scores so far in league play. And Manchester City’s Erling Haaland became the first and so far, only Premier League player to score against Arsenal from open play in the ninth minute of last weekend’s 1-1 draw.
Manager Mikel Arteta says the club’s stinginess is a credit not only to his rearguard, but to the approach of all 11 players on the field.
“We start from our frontline and the amount of pressure and work that they put into any defensive line, any goalkeeper, is tremendous,” Arteta said. “So, it’s something collective, it’s a team sport and in anything that we do, everybody has a pivotal role in that.”
Even so, the Gunners still find themselves five points back of Liverpool and already managing injuries to several key players.
However, Arteta said attacker Bukayo Saka should be fit for Sunday’s clash and that his removal following a heavy challenge in Wednesday’s 2-0 League Cup win vs. Port Vale was planned.
Newcastle (1-1-3, 6 points) have scored only three goals so far in the league amid the saga that eventually saw Isak move to Liverpool for a reported fee of $170 million.
The Magpies moved for Stuttgart’s 23-year-old Nick Woltemade as a replacement at the transfer deadline. He’s scored once so far in two league appearances after he had 12 goals in a breakthrough Bundesliga campaign.
That said, Newcastle have won their last three against Arsenal at St. James’ Park, including the second leg of last year’s Leagues Cup semifinal en route to the club’s first major honor in 70 years.
And they’ve been very competitive so far in two home matches against global footballing powers, a 3-2 league loss to Liverpool in the second game of the Premier League season, and a 2-1 UEFA Champions League defeat to FC Barcelona on Sept. 18.
“It has always been a competitive game against Arsenal, and there has been an edge to those games as both teams want to win,” said Magpies manager Eddie Howe. “The more competitive we are, the better we play. We need to bring that to the game on Sunday.”

Liverpool ‘deserved’ defeat to Crystal Palace, says Slot
  • Ismaila Sarr’s ninth-minute opener was scant reward for a dominant first half from Palace
  • “If one team deserved to win today it was Palace,” said Slot

LONDON: Liverpool manager Arne Slot said Crystal Palace were deserving 2-1 winners as the Premier League champions’ perfect start to the season came to an abrupt end at Selhurst Park.
Slot’s men had won all seven of their Premier League, Champions League and League Cup games since losing on penalties to Palace in the Community Shield last month.
However, a new-look Liverpool, overhauled by a near £450 million ($602 million) spend in the transfer market, have flirted with failure only to be bailed out by a series of late goals.
Ismaila Sarr’s ninth-minute opener was scant reward for a dominant first half from Palace as only a string of saves from Alisson Becker kept the visitors in the game.
It looked like Liverpool might escape south London with a point after Federico Chiesa levelled with another late goal.
But this time the Reds were undone in stoppage time when Eddie Nketiah smashed in.
“If one team deserved to win today it was Palace,” said Slot.
“Credit to Palace — with the Community Shield it’s not the first time we’ve lost to them.
“They deserved to be two or three up in the first half.”
Including the Community Shield, Liverpool have conceded two goals in five of their nine games this season.
Slot was particularly angered by his side’s defending for the winner when Jeremie Frimpong switched off to leave Nketiah unmarked at the back post.
“We can only blame ourselves for defending the way we did,” said Slot.
“One of our players ran out because he wanted to play a counter-attack, which was of no use because time was up, so it was only about defending.
“One player was too offensively minded in that moment, which led to them scoring the winner and us losing the game.”
Palace are the only unbeaten team left in the Premier League.
Stretching back to before their FA Cup win last season, the Eagles have not lost in 18 games in all competitions.
“These are the moments why we love football. The fans will have a great Saturday evening now,” said Palace boss Oliver Glasner.
“We deserved it. Great performance, great game, great win.”
Glasner has transformed Palace’s fortunes over the past 18 months, but believes his side’s first-half display was a new high.
“I think the first half was the best half since we arrived,” he said.
“Leading the champions by one goal you always think they can strike back and we were under immense pressure in the second half.
“But even when they equalized and the momentum can change we kept our heads. It was such a team effort.”

  • “It was a difficult game but we controlled it better in the second half. It was a good victory,” said Matheus Nunes, who scored City’s second goal
  • City took an early lead when Burnley keeper Martin Dubravka palmed away Jeremy Doku’s shot

MANCHESTER: Two own goals by Maxime Esteve ended Burnley’s hopes of fighting back as Manchester City cruised to a 5-1 Premier League win on Saturday, with Erling Haaland scoring a late brace.
City’s third win in the campaign took them to 10 points from six matches, reducing the gap with champions Liverpool to five points, after the leaders lost 2-1 at Crystal Palace.
“It was a difficult game but we controlled it better in the second half. It was a good victory,” said Matheus Nunes, who scored City’s second goal.
“We’re still trying to reach the level we used to be with control in every game. We want to win every game but sometimes it isn’t easy. We’ll get there.”
City took an early lead when Burnley keeper Martin Dubravka palmed away Jeremy Doku’s shot but it rebounded toward Phil Foden, and Esteve’s hurried attempt to clear the danger went into the net instead.
The hosts dominated possession and subdued the Burnley attack, with the visitors unable to make an attempt to score until the 23rd minute, when Kyle Walker tried his luck with a long shot.
Dubravka deflected Nico Gonzalez’s shot for a corner and punched away Foden’s free kick to keep Burnley in the game, as a dominant City looked to double their lead.
But Burnley’s very first shot on target found the equalizer in the 38th minute, when Jaidon Anthony played a one-two with Quilindschy Hartman and fired with his left foot inside the box. The ball took a deflection off Ruben Dias and hopped into the net.

HAALAND SHINES IN THE SECOND HALF
Anthony’s fourth goal of the season reinvigorated Burnley and the visitors pushed for a second goal after the break, with Hartman’s shot testing City keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
But City regained the lead in the 61st minute when Haaland, who had a quiet first half as he returned from a back injury, leapt to head down a cross for Nunes to finish from close range.
Esteve’s second own goal came four minutes later, as substitute Oscar Bobb’s shot hit the French defender before going in near the far post, giving City a comfortable 3-1 lead.
Dubravka kept out shots from Tijjani Reijnders and Doku as City piled on the pressure, but he could not deny Haaland when the Norwegian forward found the net from Doku’s pass.
Haaland scored again in added time as a mix-up between defenders Esteve and Hjalmar Ekdal allowed the league’s leading scorer to break through toward goal and slot in his eighth goal in the campaign, sealing a 5-1 win for City.
City manager Pep Guardiola said he was happy with his team’s performance in the second half in the absence of midfielder Rodri, who missed the game due to an injury.
“I don’t know right now how the pain is in his knee. He said to us that he was not ready to play,” Guardiola told the BBC.
Burnley’s third loss in the last four games left them struggling at 17th in the table, with only four points.
City, who visit AS Monaco for a Champions League clash on Wednesday, will continue their English top-flight campaign at Brentford on October 5, the same day Burnley visit Aston Villa.

  • Niko Kovac’s team are on 13 points in second place, two behind champions Bayern Munich

MAINZ, Germany: Record-breaking Borussia Dortmund outclassed 10-man Mainz 05 2-0 on Saturday, with goals from Daniel Svensson and Karim Adeyemi, to secure a fourth straight league win that stretched their unbeaten run in the Bundesliga.
Dortmund, who host Athletic Bilbao in the Champions League on Wednesday, were without top striker Serhou Guirassy, who was injured during the warm-up.
They have now gone 13 league matches without defeat, going back to last season, and have not conceded a league goal since the first matchday on August 23. Dortmund were in the lead at halftime for the 10th Bundesliga match in a row, setting a league record.
Niko Kovac’s team are on 13 points in second place, two behind champions Bayern Munich, who were 4-0 winners over Werder Bremen on Friday.
“It happened exactly the way we had wanted it to,” Kovac told a press conference. “The team played in a very disciplined and organized way. We scored at the right times and today I saw the team play out an away game as we should.”
“We are only looking at us. I know that football in Germany has expectations that Bayern do not march away on their own this season. But we have to keep things in perspective. It is the fifth matchday and still early in the season. But we are doing it well so far.”
The visitors dominated from the start and went ahead in the 27th minute when Svensson at the far post tapped in a Julian Brandt cutback. The goal came seconds after the hosts had hit the woodwork through Paul Nebel.
Germany international Brandt then delivered another assist after Adeyemi sprinted clear and finished the job in the 44th.
Mainz were left with 10 players when keeper Robin Zentner was sent off after bringing down Adeyemi outside the box but by that time the game had long been decided with Dortmund in complete control.
Brandt nearly scored himself but his stoppage-time effort was spectacularly palmed over the bar by substitute keeper Lasse Riess.
