  • Move follows prospect of record-breaking Saudi interest

MADRID: Real Madrid are close to agreeing a contract extension with Vinicius Jr. after discussions began in January amid interest from 海角直播 to sign FIFA鈥檚 Player of the Year to a record-breaking deal, multiple sources told Reuters on Thursday.

Despite the Brazil forward鈥檚 current contract running to the end of the 2026-27 season, the Spanish champions contacted the player鈥檚 agents last month to rework his deal and put an end to the Saudi interest that has rumbled on for over a year.

A source close to Vinicius Jr said that, despite multiple contacts from 海角直播 showing interest over a possible move to Al-Ahli, a formal contract offer was never discussed and Saudi confidence in a possible move has waned in recent months.

Real have denied being contacted by Saudi authorities but a source close to the Madrid club said they were approached by Saudi Public Investment Fund officials during the Spanish Super Cup in Jeddah in early January to enquire about Vinicius Jr.

However, the European champions showed no interest in negotiating a transfer, highlighting the 24-year-old player鈥檚 鈧1 billion ($1.04 billion) buy-out clause as the only scenario in which they would allow the Brazilian to leave.

鈥淚 don鈥檛 know anything, nobody has talked to me about (a Saudi offer),鈥 Vinicius Jr told TNT Sports after Real鈥檚 3-2 win at Manchester City in their Champions League playoff first-leg on Tuesday. 鈥淭hey have to speak to (Real鈥檚) president. I hope I can stay here for a long time,鈥 added the player of the match.

鈥淚t鈥檚 always very exciting to be able to open talks with Real Madrid about my renewal. I have a contract until 2027, but I鈥檝e always spoken of my desire to be able to play here for a long time, to be able to make history here.鈥

Real announced Vinicius Jr.鈥檚 last contract extension in October 2023, which was a four-year deal reportedly worth a net 鈧13.5 million in salary per season.

He opted for a shorter, incentive-based deal, rather than the usual five-to-six-year contracts most Real players sign, in a bet on his progress as one of Europe鈥檚 leading young players.

Top salary

Following a LaLiga and Champions League double last season and his FIFA Player of the Year award in 2024, sources said Vinicius Jr. had achieved a series of performance and loyalty bonuses that boosted his salary to the top of Real鈥檚 wage bill.

Neither the club nor the players disclose the figures in their contracts but multiple soccer sources said Vinicius Jr.鈥檚 salary is already at about the same level as their new striker Kylian Mbappe鈥檚, around 鈧18 million per year.

However, the Frenchman鈥檚 contract includes a 鈧100 million signing bonus and a large percentage of his image rights that make him one of the highest-paid athletes in the world.

Following a couple of face-to-face meetings in the last few weeks in Madrid attended by Vinicius Jr.鈥檚 father, Real have put forward new numbers and a third meeting between club executives and the player鈥檚 team is scheduled for next week.

There is growing optimism on both sides that there will soon be an agreement on a contract extension for Vinicius Jr.

A source close to the player said he has no interest in joining another club in Europe and would only start listening to contract offers from 海角直播 above 鈧1 billion.

Vinicius Jr. and his staff already have a fruitful business relationship with 海角直播 and he has participated in sponsorship and commercial meetings regarding tourism and E-sports events in the Gulf country.

There is also interest from 海角直播 in making him an ambassador for the 2034 World Cup, which will be held there.

JEDDAH: Al-Hilal won 2-0 at Al-Ittihad on Friday to silence the reigning champions, reaffirm their title credentials and move into third place in the Saudi Pro League behind Al-Taawoun and early leaders Al-Nassr.

It was a night that pitted two former coaches of Milan鈥檚 great rivals against each other, with the visitors鈥 ex-Inter boss Simone Inzaghi crossing swords with the home side鈥檚 Sergio Conceicao, formerly of AC Milan.

It was a night of spectacle from the start at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah, with every seat filled. Before kick-off, Al-Ittihad鈥檚 fans unfurled a huge tifo to greet their team. The noise was fierce, the tension palpable as for the first half-hour the two giants traded blows, each in search of an opening.

Karim Benzema came close for Al-Ittihad but the breakthrough did not come until five minutes before the interval, when Al-Hilal鈥檚 Ruben Neves swung in a curling corner from the left, the ball dipping dangerously into a packed six-yard box. Amid the chaos, it was Mahamadou Doumbia who got the final touch 鈥 an unfortunate header that flew into his own net.

As Al-Ittihad battled to find a response after the break, Al-Hilal struck again in the 57th minute. Neves, again at the heart of everything, unleashed a fierce, long-range shot that goalkeeper Hamed Al-Shanqiti could only parry. Marcos Leonardo was quickest to react, slotting the rebound into the net from close range and turning the visitors鈥 control into comfort. The damage was done.

A few minutes from the end, Darwin Nunez once again had the ball in the Al-Ittihad net but the former Liverpool forward鈥檚 strike was ruled out for offside.

It didn鈥檛 matter. Al-Hilal鈥檚 composure, experience and precision were simply too much for the home side and the final whistle signaled a statement victory in a high-voltage rivalry that might yet define the course of the season ahead.

For now, though, Al-Hilal take the three points home to Riyadh, and at this early stage the title race is wide open.
