  • Newmarket-based handler has enjoyed remarkable success in the region

LONDON: British trainer George Scott is making waves in the Middle East with a string of impressive victories across Bahrain and Dubai, and soon, he hopes, in 海角直播.

The Newmarket-based handler has enjoyed remarkable success, most notably guiding Isle of Jura to a historic Bahraini Triple Crown in 2024 for Sheikh Nasser Al-Khalifa鈥檚 Victorious Racing.

Scott鈥檚 winning form has continued into the 2025 season, with Phantom Flight securing victory in The Crown Prince Cup, the first leg of the Bahraini Triple Crown. The gelding is now poised to follow in Isle of Jura鈥檚 footsteps.

鈥淧hantom Flight has gone from strength to strength physically and mentally in Bahrain. He鈥檚 thrived there and has taken a big step forward on his last start. I am very much looking forward to HH Sheikh Nasser鈥檚 Cup in a few weeks鈥 time and then The King鈥檚 Cup. Hopefully he can follow Isle of Jura,鈥 Scott said in comments to Great British Racing International.

Reflecting on his successful campaign in Bahrain, Scott praised the teamwork behind his achievements.

鈥淚鈥檝e loved my season in Bahrain. It鈥檚 been an incredible success so far; all credit goes to my staff out there and my owners Sheikh Nasser and the City House boys. Those horses have been selected for that purpose and it has gone well so far.鈥

Scott鈥檚 winning touch has also extended to Dubai, where West Acre stormed to victory in the Group 2 Blue Point Sprint. The three-year-old sprinter is now being primed for Super Saturday, with hopes of securing a place on the prestigious Dubai World Cup card.

鈥淲est Acre has always been a horse that we held in very high regard at home. It鈥檚 been well documented that he picked up an injury in the spring last year which meant he could not have a conventional two-year-old campaign. Last time he gave us one of those moments that rarely happens on the racetrack; he really impressed me with his turn of foot,鈥 Scott said.

Looking ahead, Scott has high hopes for his charge on one of the biggest nights in global racing.

鈥淗e will go to Super Saturday now and then onto the Al Quoz Sprint on World Cup night, all being well. He鈥檚 shown a liking to the track at Meydan and we are all hoping he can repeat that performance again, because if he does, he will be a Group 1 sprinter. We will then consider long-term plans for him, but the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes over five furlongs (1,006 meters) at Royal Ascot is in the picture.鈥

Scott鈥檚 Middle Eastern campaign extends to 海角直播, where Prydwen is set to make his debut in the Group 2 Red Sea Turf Handicap on Feb. 22 as part of the Saudi Cup meeting. The seven-year-old, who won the German St. Leger last year, recently finished fourth in a Group 3 contest at Meydan, beaten by just a length.

鈥淧rydwen took a little time to acclimatize to life in the Middle East and I was much happier with him going into his second race. He鈥檚 come forward again for that run and I am looking forward to the Red Sea Turf,鈥 Scott said.

鈥淚t will be my first runner in Saudi, something that I鈥檝e always wanted to do. We are under no illusions as to how difficult a race it will be but he should enjoy the conditions and the trip. It will be an interesting first runner for us and hopefully we will spend more time there in the future,鈥 he added.

With major targets on the horizon in Bahrain, Dubai and 海角直播, Scott鈥檚 presence in the Middle Eastern racing scene is growing stronger by the day. His continued success highlights the increasing global footprint of British trainers and the strength of British-trained horses on the international stage.

Daniel Levy steps down as Tottenham chairman after divisive 25-year tenure
The 63-year-old Levy was the longest-serving chairman in the Premier League
He said he has left his role with Tottenham now a 鈥済lobal heavyweight competing at the highest level鈥

LONDON: Daniel Levy has stepped down as Tottenham chairman, the club announced Thursday, ending the nearly 25-year tenure of a divisive figure known for keeping the Premier League team profitable but being unable to turn it into a trophy-winning force.
The 63-year-old Levy, who was the longest-serving chairman in the Premier League, said he has left his role with Tottenham now a 鈥済lobal heavyweight competing at the highest level.鈥
鈥淚t hasn鈥檛 always been an easy journey,鈥 Levy said, 鈥渂ut significant progress has been made. I will continue to support this club passionately.鈥
Levy鈥檚 departure comes several months after Tottenham ended a 17-year trophy drought by beating Manchester United 1-0 to win the Europa League final. It was the first major title for Spurs since they won the English League Cup in 2008, and first European triumph since they won the UEFA Cup 鈥 the equivalent of the Europa League now 鈥 for the second time in 1984.
Known as a fierce and uncompromising negotiator in the transfer market, Levy also was accused by many Tottenham fans of chasing profits over silverware in failing to fully back some of the most high-profile managers in soccer that he employed in recent years, such as Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.
There were protests against his tenure last season, when Tottenham finished 17th in the Premier League 鈥 one place above the bottom three 鈥 despite the club being among the so-called 鈥淏ig Six鈥 in English soccer and owning one of the best stadiums in world soccer.
Levy oversaw the move from White Hart Lane to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, their home since 2019 and now a venue for concerts and other sporting events like boxing and NFL.
Tottenham said there would be 鈥渘o changes to the ownership or shareholder structure of the club鈥 in light of the departure of Levy, who reportedly owns around 30 percent of the share capital of ENIC, the club鈥檚 majority owner.
Peter Charrington has become non-executive chairman, and he thanked Levy and his family for 鈥渢heir commitment and loyalty to the club over so many years.鈥

  • Match is part of a training camp for the Green Falcons ahead of their double header of Asian qualifiers next month for the 2026 World Cup

DUBAI: 海角直播 defeated North Macedonia 2-1 on Thursday in a friendly match at FK Viktoria Stadion in Prague, as part of a training camp for the Green Falcons ahead of next month鈥檚 fourth round of the Asian Qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.

Herve Renard鈥檚 men fell behind to 41st-minute Aleksandar Trajkovski strike, but went into the break on level terms after Feras Al-Buraikan equalized in the first minute of stoppage time. They completed the comeback win thanks to a 78th-minute winner from Abdullah Al-Hamdan.

The Saudis dominated for long spells, ending up with 65.7 percent of the possession, according to the BBC, and 11 shots on goal, seven of them on target, compared with North Macedonia鈥檚 five shots, two of which were on target.

On Monday, 海角直播 will take on the Czech Republic in their second friendly of the international break, before the double header of World Cup qualifiers against Indonesia on Oct. 8 and Iraq on Oct. 14. Both matches will be played at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah.

Hamilton鈥檚 grid penalty gives him 鈥榤ore to fight for鈥 in Monza debut with Ferrari
  • 鈥淚 landed back home and then saw that I got this penalty and I was really, really shocked,鈥 Hamilton said
  • 鈥淚t鈥檚 going to be challenging this weekend鈥

MONZA, Italy: As if a first Italian Grand Prix with Ferrari isn鈥檛 incentive enough this weekend, Lewis Hamilton says he has extra motivation for his first time in red at the iconic Monza track.
A disastrous Dutch Grand Prix last weekend for both Hamilton and Ferrari culminated in the seven-time world champion being handed a five-place grid penalty 鈥 to be served at Monza 鈥 for failing to slow down enough while driving to the grid before the race.
鈥淚 landed back home and then saw that I got this penalty and I was really, really shocked,鈥 Hamilton said Thursday.
鈥淭o get the penalty and get (license) penalty points was pretty hard core, but I鈥檓 over it, there鈥檚 no point moaning about it, I鈥檝e just got to move forward.鈥
However, that has only served to spur him on even more as Hamilton prepares to race at the Temple of Speed for the 19th time but a first with the Italian Scuderia.
鈥淚t鈥檚 going to be challenging this weekend,鈥 Hamilton added. 鈥淨ualifying is already鈥 it鈥檚 already so close between us all, so just getting into Q3 is tough, getting into the top five is very, very tough.
鈥淭hen, on top of that, to be set back five places is not great when you鈥檙e going into your first Monza GP with Ferrari, but in the end it gives me more to fight for and I鈥檓 very motivated to make up those places.鈥
The 40-year-old Hamilton has had a difficult first season with the Italian team. He won a sprint race in China in March and has three fourth-place finishes 鈥 including at Imola in May in his first taste of racing in red in Italy 鈥 but hasn鈥檛 yet reached the podium in a grand prix for Ferrari.
Hamilton hit the wall at the Dutch Grand Prix as both Ferraris failed to finish but he said there were still 鈥渓oads of positives鈥 to take from the weekend.
The British driver is sixth in the drivers鈥 championship with 109 points 鈥 200 fewer than leader Oscar Piastri.
鈥淚t鈥檚 been an emotional rollercoaster,鈥 Hamilton said about his start with Ferrari. 鈥淒id I expect it to be as volatile in terms of the feeling? No, but that鈥檚 life.
鈥淚 like to think that we鈥檙e coming, even though we had a difficult Sunday, we鈥檙e coming out on the brighter end of the tunnel.鈥

  • 鈥淭his club represents something truly special,鈥 Hopkinson said
  • Hopkinson has joined Newcastle after serving as President and Chief Operating Officer at Madison Square Garden Sports

LONDON: Newcastle United have appointed Canadian David Hopkinson as chief executive officer to replace Darren Eales, the Premier League club announced on Thursday.
Eales stepped down for health reasons after announcing last September that he had been diagnosed with a chronic form of blood cancer.
鈥淭his club represents something truly special,鈥 Hopkinson said. 鈥淚t has extraordinary history and heritage, incredibly passionate supporters, and ownership, players and staff who are committed to excellence.
鈥淗aving worked with iconic teams across different countries, I understand what it takes to build sustainable success at the highest levels of global sport.
鈥淚 greatly admire what has been achieved by the club so far, and I am excited and motivated by what is ahead as we strive to position Newcastle United among the world鈥檚 elite clubs.鈥
Hopkinson has joined Newcastle after serving as President and Chief Operating Officer at Madison Square Garden Sports, where he led the business operations of the New York Knicks and New York Rangers.
Both teams, who play out of Madison Square Garden in New York City, are among the most valuable franchises in the NBA and NHL respectively.
Hopkinson was previously Global Head of Partnerships at Real Madrid, who cemented their place as one of the world鈥檚 most valuable football clubs during his tenure.
He also spent over two decades at Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment Ltd. as Chief Commercial Officer, overseeing commercial activities for the NHL鈥檚 Toronto Maple Leafs and NBA鈥檚 Toronto Raptors.
Newcastle chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan called Hopkinson an 鈥渙utstanding executive鈥 with a top track record.
鈥淗is experience and strategic capabilities will be invaluable as we continue to build on the club鈥檚 presence locally and grow it globally on and off the pitch,鈥 he said.
鈥淒avid鈥檚 leadership will be critical as we build upon what we have already achieved since the acquisition toward an exciting future and sustainable success.鈥
In 2021, a consortium led by 海角直播鈥檚 Public Investment Fund became majority owners of Newcastle.
Last season, the club ended a 56-year trophy drought when they beat Liverpool 2-1 in the
League Cup final.
