  • Three-year program will research esports, including anti-doping in e-sports and the importance of physical activity for gamers

RIYADH: The Saudi Esports Federation and King Saud University Medical City have agreed to collaborate on implementing physical and mental wellbeing initiatives, developing health programs and conducting advanced research for electronic sports players.

Specific areas of joint focus include groundbreaking research into anti-doping in e-sports, the importance of physical activity for e-sports athletes and preventing and managing injuries. A medical committee will be established to combat doping.

The agreement, which aligns with the aims of º£½ÇÖ±²¥â€™s Vision 2030 and the National Gaming and Esports Strategy, will last for three years and is one of the first of its kind in the world.

Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Sultan, chairman of the Saudi Esports Federation, said: “The memorandum of understanding between the Saudi Esports Federation and King Saud University Medical City positions º£½ÇÖ±²¥ as a global leader in e-sports governance and integrating health and wellness into e-sports. The words innovative and groundbreaking are often overused but it is impossible to overstate how important this MoU could be for implementing physical and mental wellbeing initiatives not just in our nation, but in our industry. This is particularly prevalent considering that there remains a lingering public perception among some that gaming is an unhealthy pastime.

“As a global-leading federation, we at SEF relish the responsibility of enhancing best practice in gaming and e-sports and improving the lives of our community, and feel this collaboration is full proof of that in action. The MoU advances public health, fosters innovation and fully focuses on e-sports excellence and the health requirements that are vital to ensure e-sports excellence.â€

The work achieved through the agreement will go towards the aims of º£½ÇÖ±²¥â€™s National and Gaming Esports Strategy, which has ambitions to make the country a global hub for the gaming industry by 2030.

The research into anti-doping in e-sports is especially groundbreaking. As part of that, the agreement will help establish what exactly is doping in e-sports and how to combat it. Currently, the e-sports industry lacks consistent anti-doping standards, with few organizations adhering to any guidelines, and those that do often follow fragmented and inconsistent practices. It is hoped that the research by SEF and KSUMC could in time develop specific e-sports processes and guidelines on anti-doping.

The MoU will also help with the future implementation of health-related regulatory issues in e-sports as a global industry. It will help encourage healthy practices among gamers not just in º£½ÇÖ±²¥ but, when the research is shared, the wider world.

In addition, the agreement will assist all those in the SEF Career Pathway Strategy, which is implemented through the SEF Academy and the member clubs in º£½ÇÖ±²¥. All professional, semi-professional, retired, youth and amateur players — male and female  will benefit from the work conducted through the SEF and KSUMC.

Pakistan ride luck to reach 177-3 in second South Africa Test
  • South African spinners dismiss Babar Azam (16) and Abdullah Shafiq (57)
  • Pakistan won the first Test match against South Africa in Lahore by 93 runs

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan took advantage of some poor South African fielding to reach 177-3 at tea on the opening day of the second and final Test in Rawalpindi on Monday.

Despite their fielding lapses South Africa’s spinners removed Abdullah Shafqiue (57) and Babar Azam (16) to check the momentum of the hosts, who won the toss on a spin-friendly pitch.

Shan Masood, dropped on 71 off a luckless Keshav Maharaj, was unbeaten on 77 with two fours and three sixes while Saud Shakeel was six not out at the break.

Shafqiue’s chancy knock finally ended when he edged Simon Harmer to wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne after adding an invaluable 111 runs for the second wicket with skipper Masood.

Azam, again cheered by a home crowd willing him to return to form, fell after Tony de Zorzi took a low catch at silly point for Maharaj’s first wicket.

Azam has gone 29 Test innings without a century.

Maharaj himself dropped Shafique on 15 off his own bowling and then saw Aiden Markram drop the same batter on 41 and 53.

Shafique also survived on nine when a Marco Jansen delivery beat him and hit the stumps after rolling down but did not dislodge the bails.

In the morning session South Africa’s only breakthrough came from Harmer, who bowled Imam-ul-Haq for 17 with a sharp turner that beat the bat and hit off-stump.

Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada was also unlucky when Tristan Stubbs dropped Shafique in the slips off the fourth ball of the match for nought.

Harmer has figures of 2-57.

Having won the first Test in Lahore by 93 runs, Pakistan strengthened their attack by including a third spinner in Asif Afridi, dropping fast bowler Hasan Ali.

At 38 years and 299 days, Asif becomes the second oldest Pakistani Test debutant, behind Miran Bakhsh, who made his debut at 47 years and 284 days against India in 1955.

South Africa named three spinners and two pacers.

  • Shan Masood and Abdullah Shafique steady Pakistan with unbeaten 60-run stand before lunch
  • Off-spinner Simon Harmer gives South Africa only breakthrough after Imam-ul-Haq’s early dismissal

RAWALPINDI: Pakistan were well placed on 95-1 at lunch on the opening day of the second and final Test against South Africa in Rawalpindi on Monday.

Opener Abdullah Shafique lived dangerously in reaching 37 and with him Shan Masood was on 38 after Pakistan won the toss on another spin-friendly pitch at Rawalpindi stadium.

The skipper Masood batted aggressively, hitting three sixes and a four, while Shafique scored four fours as the duo made 60 for the unbeaten second wicket.

South Africa’s only breakthrough came by off-spinner Simon Harmer, who bowled Imam-ul-Haq for 17 with a sharp turner that beat the bat and hit off-stump.

Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada initially swung the new ball but saw Tristan Stubbs drop Shafique in the slips off the fourth ball of the match for nought.

South Africa included experienced spinner Keshav Maharaj, who missed the first Test with injury, and added Marco Jansen to partner Rabada in the pace attack.

  • FIA president praises Paris Basketball Foundation for joining UAOA campaign to shield athletes, officials, volunteers, fans from digital harm

DUBAI: FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem says the backing of the influential Paris Basketball Foundation for the United Against Online Abuse campaign has provided another boost in the global fight against digital harm in sport.

The Paris Basketball Foundation supports projects linked to sport, education, health and mental health, and environment and solidarity, making them a natural partner for the UAOA coalition.

Ben Sulayem, the UAOA founder, said: “Sport has the power to unite, inspire and shape values. To preserve that integrity, we must eliminate online abuse and ensure that respect remains at the heart of every competition.

“Through the United Against Online Abuse coalition, we are building a global movement to shield athletes, officials, volunteers and fans from digital harm, and to champion mental health across every sport. I applaud Paris Basketball and its foundation for standing with us to safeguard respect, inclusion and fairness both on and off the court.â€

The foundation signed the campaign’s charter during a basketball match staged as part of France’s Mental Health Information Weeks, reaffirming its commitment to a safe and respectful environment for youth, an essential issue in the digital age.

It also hosted workshops and events to provide young athletes with tools to better manage stress, anxiety and performance.

Willem Groenewald, FIA secretary-general for automobile mobility and sustainability, said: “Online abuse can have a profound impact on the mental health of young people, athletes and fans alike.

“Through the United Against Online Abuse campaign, the FIA is working hand in hand with partners like Paris Basketball to build a safer, more inclusive sporting environment for everyone.

“Winning this battle requires a collective global approach — uniting sport, technology, governments and academia behind a shared mission. We are proud to welcome the club and its foundation to this global coalition and to stand united for respect and mental health in sport.â€

Founded in 2023 by Ben Sulayem, the UAOA campaign is a research-led coalition supported by the FIA Foundation. It has witnessed rapid growth in recent months and was recently awarded Peace and Sport’s prestigious Coalition for Peace Award.

Uniting international sport federations and organizations, national governments and technology platforms, UAOA is dedicated to fostering behavioral change through education and research.

Dubai Basketball maintain perfect start to ABA League season
  • The 81-77 win over U-BT Cluj-Napoca at Coca-Cola Arena means Dubai have won all 3 opening matches in the competition

DUBAI: Dubai Basketball continued their unbeaten run in the ABA League with a hard-fought 81-77 victory over newcomers U-BT Cluj-Napoca from Romania at Coca-Cola Arena on Sunday.

Following strong performances in their debut EuroLeague campaign, the city’s first home basketball club once again demonstrated composure and depth to remain flawless across competitions.

The matchup against Cluj-Napoca was closely contested despite Dubai controlling the pace for most of the game. Late in the fourth quarter, the Romanian side mounted a strong comeback led by Dusan Miletic but Dubai maintained focus in the final minutes to secure the win.

Head Coach Jurica Golemac praised the team and fans: “Today we were expecting a very difficult game, and that’s what happened. We needed energy after the week that took us out.

“We found that the crowd was what was giving us the energy again, with our fans helping us in the most crucial moments. Again, one more time, we won the game with defense, with strong energy and physicality.â€

Mfiondu Kabengele once again led with a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds, anchoring Dubai on both ends of the floor. McKinley Wright added 11 points in a standout performance, while Sertac Sanli contributed 10.

Making his debut for Dubai Basketball, Sanli was credited with turning the game around in a tied-up final quarter. “We didn’t play well the whole game, but we showed good hustle, especially in the second half, and managed to get the win.â€

“I know that game by game, I’ll get better — I’ll understand my teammates more, understand the coach better, and grow with the team. We still have a long way to go, but I believe we’ll keep improving every game.â€

Dubai Basketball will have a two-week away stint with their next match against LDLC ASVEL in Lyon. At home they will play ABA League reigning champions Partizan on Nov. 3 at Coca-Cola Arena.

Liverpool star Salah should not be automatic starter in away games, says Carragher
  • Egyptian forward has been way below his record-breaking form from last season’s campaign
  • Salah squandered a golden opportunity to score in Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat by Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday

Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah’s form has dipped to such an extent that he should not be considered an automatic starter away from home, former defender Jamie Carragher said after the Premier League champions suffered a fourth consecutive defeat.
The 33-year-old Egyptian forward, who signed a two-year contract extension in April, has been way below his record-breaking form from last season’s campaign and has gone seven matches without a non-penalty goal.
Salah squandered a golden opportunity to score in Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat by Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday and Carragher said he should not be one of the first names on the team sheet like captain Virgil van Dijk.
“Liverpool have got two away games — in the Champions League at Frankfurt and then they go to Brentford. I don’t think Salah should start both of those games,†Carragher told Sky Sports.
“He should always start at Anfield because Liverpool will be on top, around the edge of the box and more often than not he scores in those situations today.
“But I do think in the away games and helping your full-back, I don’t think Salah should be starting every game right now, certainly away from home, with the form he’s in.â€
Liverpool came into Sunday’s game on the back of league defeats by Crystal Palace and Chelsea, and a Champions League loss to Galatasaray.
Their poor run comes despite splashing out £446 million ($600 million) in the close-season transfer window and Carragher said manager Arne Slot should build the team around Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz.
“It has to be Isak and Wirtz because they’ve spent the money on them and their age profile compared to Salah,†Carragher said.
Liverpool are fourth in the league on 15 points from eight matches, four behind leaders Arsenal.
