BEIRUT: New Lebanese President Joseph Aoun鈥檚 first official overseas trip will be to 海角直播, he said on Saturday.

It came during during a phone call with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the president鈥檚 office said.

The crown prince called to congratulate Aoun and invited him to visit the Kingdom, the Lebanese presidency and Saudi Press Agency said.

Aoun said that 海角直播 would be his first destination 鈥渋n recognition of the Kingdom鈥檚 historical role in supporting Lebanon and standing in solidarity with it, and as an affirmation of Lebanon鈥檚 deep Arab identity as the foundation of its relations with its regional surroundings,鈥 his office said.

During the call, the crown prince conveyed King Salman鈥檚 and his congratulations on Aoun鈥檚 election and his swearing-in as president.

The crown prince wished 鈥渟uccess to Aoun and the brotherly Lebanese people, as well as further progress and prosperity.鈥

Aoun thanked the crown prince for 海角直播鈥檚 stances toward Lebanon and its people.

In his first statement after assuming office, Aoun told visitors on Saturday that he 鈥渄id not come to engage in politics but to build a state that can only be established on justice and equality among all its components, which share one identity.鈥

Speaking to a delegation from Dar Al-Fatwa headed by Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdel Latif Derian, Aoun said: 鈥淭he responsibility does not lie solely on me, and this is not just my term; it is the term of every Lebanese, regardless of their position or sect.

鈥淲e have great and numerous opportunities, and the world has begun discussing conferences in support of Lebanon, but it depends on us to demonstrate to these countries the extent of our credibility in building the state.

鈥淲e are not building a state for sects; Lebanon as a state protects everyone; the state of sects does not ensure protection.鈥

Aoun added: 鈥淭here are no winners or losers; rather, we have a great opportunity that we either seize or lose.

鈥淲e have seen what has happened recently, and everyone has been affected. This country, its people and future generations have suffered enough.鈥

Aoun expressed his hope that the new government would be formed as quickly as possible, 鈥渁llowing us to begin building bridges of trust with the outside world.鈥

He said: 鈥淲e must seek the assistance of the outside world, not use it to gain strength against our people. No sect or individual is superior to another.鈥

In his speech, Grand Mufti Derian thanked the Arab and friendly states that helped Lebanon 鈥渆merge from the dark tunnel and end the presidential vacancy.鈥

He said: 鈥淲e are an essential component of the state, and what we seek is to achieve a balance between the components of Lebanese society.

鈥淲e want to feel that we live in a state governed by justice, law, the constitution and the Taif Agreement,鈥 he added.

In Damascus, Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati held talks on his first official visit to Syria following the fall of Bashar Assad鈥檚 regime.

He held an extensive meeting with the leader of the new administration, Ahmad Al-Sharaa.

Al-Sharaa told a press conference at the People鈥檚 Palace: 鈥淲e are giving ourselves an opportunity to build positive relations in the upcoming stages based on the sovereignty of Lebanon and Syria.

鈥淲e will maintain neutrality toward all parties in Lebanon and will try to resolve issues.

鈥淭he priority for Syria at this time is to ensure the security of the nation and to confine weapons to the hands of the Syrian state.鈥

He said: 鈥淥ur objective is to establish positive relations between the Syrian and Lebanese peoples based on mutual respect, and the sovereignty of both countries, and Syria will strive to address all issues through dialogue.鈥

Al-Sharaa鈥檚 meeting with Mikati focused on smuggling and Syrian deposits in Lebanese banks, he added.

鈥淲e also raised the issue of demarcating the borders between the two countries.鈥

Mikati called for 鈥渁ctivating the relations between the two countries based on the national sovereignty of each and working to prevent anything that could harm the relationship.

鈥淪yria represents Lebanon鈥檚 natural gateway to the Arab world, and as long as it is well, Lebanon will also be well,鈥 he added.

The caretaker prime minister also addressed the issue of Syrian refugees in Lebanon, describing it as an 鈥渦rgent matter.鈥

Lebanon must 鈥減romptly and facilitate their return to Syria, as this matter exerts significant pressure on Lebanon, and I have sensed an understanding of this situation,鈥 Mikati said.

Meanwhile, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri received a phone call from French President Emmanuel Macron, who congratulated him on the election of the president.

Macron highlighted France鈥檚 commitment to 鈥渃ontinuing its support for Lebanon in all fields, especially the Lebanese army, and to implementing the ceasefire agreement in southern Lebanon.鈥

He said that he would visit Lebanon 鈥渧ery soon.鈥

President Aoun received congratulatory messages on his election from Kuwait鈥檚 Emir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who highlighted his 鈥渒eenness to strengthen the historic and distinguished relations between the two countries,鈥 as well as UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan; UAE Vice President and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum; UAE Vice President Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al-Nahyan; and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

In southern Lebanon, the Lebanese army began redeploying in the towns of Al-Qaouzah, the outskirts of Ramyeh, Tayr Harfa, Wadi Ain Al-Zarqa and Al-Batishiyeh in Tyre district after the Israeli army withdrew as part of the ceasefire agreement with Hezbollah.

  • 鈥榃hat鈥檚 happening in Palestine isn鈥檛 lawful. It鈥檚 not acceptable,鈥 Anthony Aguilar tells webinar attended by Arab News
  • 鈥楨ntire population of human beings being starved, dehumanized, displaced and killed鈥

CHICAGO: A retired US special forces officer who worked for the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation slammed Israel鈥檚 actions during a webinar attended by Arab News on Sunday.

鈥淲hat鈥檚 happening in Palestine, in Gaza, in the West Bank isn鈥檛 lawful. It鈥檚 not acceptable,鈥 said Anthony Aguilar.

鈥淚t鈥檚 not self-defense. It鈥檚 not justified in any way. And to stand by and support it, even to just stand by and turn another cheek, is wrong 鈥 That鈥檚 when evil really starts to take root is when people can hide from the truth.鈥

He said he witnessed how easily Israeli soldiers would shoot and kill Palestinians who lined up for food at distribution sites operated by the GHF, which is backed by Israel and the US.

Aguilar spoke of 鈥渁n entire population of human beings being starved, dehumanized, displaced and killed,鈥 and described Israel鈥檚 actions in Gaza as 鈥渋nhumane.鈥

He was arrested on Wednesday along with former army intelligence officer Dr. Josephine Guilbeau while protesting during a Senate hearing against US complicity.

Guilbeau told the webinar that her effort to 鈥渟ound the alarm鈥 in the Senate and Congress 鈥渄oesn鈥檛 come easy to me 鈥 especially as someone who served this country for over 17 years 鈥 It鈥檚 not something that I鈥檓 happy to have to do, but it鈥檚 something that I know must be done.鈥

She noted that there are eight American military veterans among the dozens of activists on the Global Sumud Flotilla, led by Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, which is sailing to Gaza with humanitarian aid.

Guilbeau said the flotilla protest is 鈥渟omething that must be done鈥 to raise awareness of the killings in Gaza.

Lara Elborno, an international lawyer and member of the Gaza Tribunal, which is examining the UK鈥檚 role in war crimes committed in the Palestinian enclave, told the webinar: 鈥淧ublic opinion in support of the Palestinian liberation struggle has always been the norm in large parts of the Global South, but what鈥檚 different now is that public opinion supporting Israel and its genocide is a minority opinion in the Global North.鈥

She added: 鈥淭he latest polls in the US are damning indictments of the fact that the genocide hasn鈥檛 been a popular policy, whether it be among Republicans or Democrats. The Israeli regime has never been as unpopular as it is in this moment.鈥

The webinar was organized by Lifeline for Palestine, and was led by former US presidential candidate Dr. Jill Stein.

  • He condemned genocidal rhetoric and the mass killing of Palestinian civilians, warning that the rules of war are being 鈥渟hredded with virtually no accountability鈥

GENEVA: The UN human rights chief on Monday accused Israel of committing grave violations in Gaza, warning that mounting evidence could hold it accountable before the International Court of Justice.

Volker T眉rk, speaking at the opening of the 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, said he was 鈥渉orrified by the open use of genocidal rhetoric, and the disgraceful dehumanization of Palestinians by senior Israeli officials,鈥 describing Gaza as 鈥渁lready a graveyard.鈥

T眉rk condemned what he called Israel鈥檚 鈥渕ass killing of Palestinian civilians, the obstruction of humanitarian aid, and the commission of war crimes,鈥 adding that such acts were 鈥渟hocking the world鈥檚 conscience.鈥 He warned that 鈥渞ules of war are being shredded 鈥 with virtually no accountability.鈥

The UN rights chief said the situation in Gaza reflected a broader erosion of international law, where 鈥渢he glorification of violence is coupled with disturbing trends that undercut our rights across the world.鈥 He urged decisive international action to halt the bloodshed, stressing that the mounting evidence of atrocities requires urgent accountability.

T眉rk also highlighted the crisis in Sudan, describing the scale of the suffering of the Sudanese people as 鈥榰nfathomable鈥 and urging decisive action to prevent further atrocities.

  • Israel鈥檚 emergency service said around 15 people were injured in a shooting Monday at Ramot Junction in east Jerusalem
  • Police confirmed two assailants carried out the attack and said they had been 鈥渘eutralized鈥

JERUSALEM: Paramedics said at least five people were killed in a shooting attack in Jerusalem after two attackers opened fire at a bus stop at a busy intersection in north Jerusalem.
Paramedics said an additional 15 people were injured, including six in serious condition.
Police said the attackers shot people waiting at a bus stop, while Israeli media reported the attackers also boarded a bus and opened fire inside.
Police a security officer and a civilian shot the attackers soon after the incident began halted the attack. Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the status of the attackers or their identity.
The shooting took place at a major intersection at the northern entrance to Jerusalem, on a road that leads to Jewish settlements located in east Jerusalem.
Footage of the attack showed dozens of people fleeing from a bus stop at the busy intersection during the morning rush hour. Paramedics who responded to the scene said the area was chaotic and covered in broken glass, with people wounded and lying unconscious on the road and a sidewalk near the bus stop.
There was no immediate comment on the attack from Palestinian militant groups.
The war in Gaza has sparked a surge of violence in both the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Israel. Palestinian militants have attacked and killed Israelis in Israel and the West Bank, while there has also been a rise in settler violence against Palestinians.
While there have been scattered attacks over the past months in Israel, the last deadly mass shooting attack was in October 2024, when two Palestinians from the West Bank opened fire on a major boulevard and light rail station in the Tel Aviv area, killing seven people and leaving many others wounded. Hamas鈥 military wing claimed responsibility for the attack.
According to police, the two men opened fire in the Jaffa neighborhood of Tel Aviv, including shooting directly into a light rail carriage crowded with passengers that was stopped at a station.
Data from the UN鈥檚 humanitarian office says at least 49 Israelis were killed by Palestinians in Israel or the West Bank between the start of the war and July 2025.
In that time, Israeli forces and civilians killed at least 968 Palestinians in Israel and the West Bank.
