Barcelona defeat Bilbao without Olmo to reach Spanish Super Cup final
  • Gavi put Barcelona ahead from close range after 17 minutes and teenage winger Yamal netted the second early after the break

JEDDAH, 海角直播: Young starlets Gavi and Lamine Yamal fired Barcelona, without Dani Olmo after his license to play was revoked, into the Spanish Super Cup final with a 2-0 win against Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday.
Spanish playmaker Olmo was cleared to play again on a temporary basis before the game but the decision came too late for him or Pau Victor, in the same position, to feature against Copa del Rey winners Athletic.
Gavi put Barcelona ahead from close range after 17 minutes and teenage winger Yamal netted the second early after the break.
Spanish and European champions Real Madrid face cup runners-up Mallorca on Thursday in the second semifinal in 海角直播, where the competition has been held for the past few years.
鈥淎thletic are a very physical team that make you run a lot, we suffered above all toward the end, but we were able to play well and we鈥檙e very happy,鈥 Yamal told Movistar.
The winger said Olmo and Victor were pleased to be allowed to play once more.
鈥淚n the end you鈥檙e nervous when you can鈥檛 play and when you get news like that, you鈥檙e very happy,鈥 added Yamal.
Barca coach Hansi Flick hailed the decision from Spain鈥檚 national sports council regarding Olmo and Victor.
鈥淭he whole club is very happy for this right decision,鈥 said Flick, hoping to win his first silverware at the helm of Barca.
鈥淲e wanted to show we are a team and we win also for them.鈥
Barcelona, who qualified as La Liga runners-up, started brightly and Raphinha volleyed over from a fine Jules Kounde cross and forced Unai Simon into a good save with a free-kick.
It was no surprise when the Catalans broke the deadlock with Alejandro Balde cutting the ball back for Gavi, playing in Olmo鈥檚 attacking midfield role, to turn home for his first goal since suffering a severe knee injury last season.
The 20-year-old pointed at an imaginary watch in his celebration, a nod to Olmo who regularly produces the same gesture after scoring.
At the other end Inaki Williams dallied on the ball too long as Athletic鈥檚 best attacking move of the first half broke down.
Yamal, returning after an ankle problem, should have added Barcelona鈥檚 second after Raphinha鈥檚 shot was saved but the 17-year-old miscued an attempted lob.
Wojciech Szczesny, on his second start in goal for Barcelona, made a good save to keep Inaki Williams at bay before the break.
Barcelona doubled their lead early in the second half when Gavi slipped in Yamal who finished with aplomb.
Veteran Polish forward Robert Lewandowski spurned a fine chance to add the third, firing off-target when well placed.
Athletic coach Ernesto Valverde, who was sacked as Barcelona boss after a defeat at the same stadium in 2020, brought on Nico Williams to try and turn the game around.
The Spain international, heavily linked with Barcelona in the summer, was not fit enough to start, but made a positive impact from the bench.
The winger set up Oscar de Marcos to strike but the Athletic defender had strayed just offside and the goal was ruled out.
Inaki Williams also had a goal ruled out for offside after Frenkie De Jong鈥檚 poor back-pass took a slight deflection off Alvaro Djalo on its way to the Ghana international.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a shame given all the effort... but we have good things ahead of us and we have to continue,鈥 said Inaki Williams.
Barcelona were able to book their place in Sunday鈥檚 final, in which Olmo will be allowed to feature.
鈥淲e don鈥檛 care (who we face in the final), it will be hard and we want to win it, which is the important thing, and go back home with the trophy,鈥 said Yamal.

India, Pakistan trade accusations after Asia Cup trophy debacle
  • Indian players did not attend victory ceremony after refusing to accept trophy from Mohsin Naqvi, Asian Cricket Council president
  • Pakistan鈥檚 Salman Ali Agha alleges India 鈥渄isrespected cricket,鈥 while Indian skipper Yadav complained his side were 鈥渄enied鈥 trophy

DUBAI: Pakistan captain Salman Agha said India had 鈥渄isrespected cricket鈥 while Indian counterpart Suryakumar Yadav complained his side 鈥渨ere denied the trophy鈥 after winning a fraught Asia Cup.

The two teams did not shake hands for the third Asia Cup match running as India won the final by five wickets in Dubai on Sunday.

Suryakumar鈥檚 side did not attend the victory ceremony after refusing to accept the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi, the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), who is also chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board and Pakistan interior minister.

Suryakumar told reporters: 鈥淚 think this is one thing which I have never seen since I started playing cricket that the champion team is denied the trophy.

鈥淲e took the call on the ground about not taking the trophy.鈥

The regional Twenty20 tournament was the first time the Asian cricket giants had met since deadly fighting between the nuclear-armed neighbors earlier this year.

Tensions had been running high after the two previous matches in the competition saw political posturing and aggressive on-field behavior.

鈥淚f you tell me about the trophies, my trophies are sitting in my dressing room 鈥 all the 14 players and support staff. They are the real trophies for me,鈥 said Suryakumar.

鈥淚t appeared on the big screen that India is Asia Cup 2025 champion. It was a great journey and moment for us as a team.鈥

The presentation ceremony was delayed for an hour before announcer Simon Doull said: 鈥淚 have been informed by the ACC that the Indian cricket team will not be collecting their awards tonight. So that does conclude the post-match presentation.鈥

Pakistan鈥檚 Agha said India鈥檚 actions during the tournament had been 鈥渂ad for cricket.鈥

鈥淚 think what has happened in this tournament is very disappointing,鈥 Agha told reporters.

鈥淚f they think they disrespected us by not shaking hands, then I say they disrespected cricket.

鈥淲hat they did today, a good team doesn鈥檛 do that. Good teams do what we have done. We waited for our medals and took them.

鈥淚t鈥檚 been seen for the first time. I do not know where it will stop. What has happened in this tournament is bad for cricket.鈥

Arsenal scores two late goals to beat Newcastle
  • Arsenal produced a late flourish after trailing much of the match, following Nick Woltemade鈥檚 goal in the 34th

MANCHESTER: Gabriel Magalhaes scored a 96th-minute winner as Arsenal came back to secure a dramatic 2-1 win against Newcastle in the Premier League on Sunday and close the gap on leader Liverpool.

The defender rose to head in a stoppage-time corner that moved Mikel Arteta鈥檚 team up to second in the standings and two points behind defending champion Liverpool.

Victory saw Arsenal take full advantage of Liverpool鈥檚 first defeat of the season after the Merseyside club鈥檚 2-1 loss at Crystal Palace on Saturday. That game was also decided by a stoppage-time winner by former Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah.

A day later and it was Arsenal鈥檚 turn to produce a late flourish after trailing much of the match, following Nick Woltemade鈥檚 goal in the 34th.

Mikel Merino leveled the game with a header in the 84th and Gabriel sealed three points deep into time added on.

Earlier, Aston Villa won for the first time in the league this season with a 3-1 victory against Fulham.

Two goals in as many minutes in the second half at Villa Park sealed the comeback win after Fulham had taken an early lead through Raul Jimenez.

Ollie Watkins leveled the game before halftime and John McGinn and Emiliano Buendia struck shortly after the break to help Villa to a league win at the sixth time of asking at the start of the season.

Victory provided relief for coach Unai Emery, who has endured a difficult start to the campaign. The Spaniard, who led Villa to Champions League qualification in his first full season in charge and into the Europa League last term, has found his team battling at the wrong end of the standings in the opening weeks of this campaign after two losses and three draws.

And when Jimenez headed Fulham in front in the third minute, it looked like being another frustrating day.

But Watkins scored his first goal of the season by lobbing Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno in the 37th.

McGinn drove a low shot from around 20 yards (meters) into the bottom corner four minutes into the second half and Buendia fired in from close range two minutes later.

Barca beat Real Sociedad to top Liga as Yamal returns
  • Alvaro Odriozola gave Real Sociedad the lead against the run of play in the first half but Jules Kounde headed the Spanish champions level

BARCELONA: Lamine Yamal returned from injury to help Barcelona beat Real Sociedad 2-1 on Sunday and move top of La Liga by one point.
After Real Madrid were thrashed 5-2 by rivals Atletico Madrid in a derby on Saturday, Hansi Flick鈥檚 side had the chance to claim pole position above Xabi Alonso鈥檚 side.
Alvaro Odriozola gave Real Sociedad the lead against the run of play in the first half but Jules Kounde headed the Spanish champions level.
Yamal, who missed the last four games with a groin injury, created the winner for Robert Lewandowski just moments after coming on as a second-half substitute.
鈥淚鈥檓 very happy for (Yamal), very pleased that he鈥檚 back on the pitch because we鈥檙e going to need him,鈥 Kounde told Movistar.
Barcelona held the game at the Olympic stadium, where they have played for the last two seasons, after the city council refused them a permit to reopen their Camp Nou home earlier in the week.
Flick handed 17-year-old attacking midfielder Dro Fernandez his debut, also starting Roony Bardghji on the right wing and bringing in veteran Wojciech Szczesny for injured goalkeeper Joan Garcia.
Barcelona dominated the ball in the first half but found it hard to beat Real Sociedad goalkeeper Alex Remiro.
The Spain international made a fine save to deny Marcus Rashford in the early stages.
On loan from Manchester United, Rashford is finding his footing at Barca and played a superb through ball for Lewandowski, who fired across the face of goal from a tight angle.
Real Sociedad hit Barca with a sharp counter-attack to open the scoring after 31 minutes.
Former Real Madrid defender Odriozola applied the finishing touch to Ander Barrenetxea鈥檚 cross.
Barcelona stepped up a gear and found Remiro in their way again, with the goalkeeper superbly  palming away a Kounde cross which was deflected toward his goal.
Remiro also tipped a Bardghji effort away for a corner, which led to Barcelona鈥檚 equalizer.
Rashford, who provided an assist from a corner against Real Oviedo in midweek, whipped it to the near post, where Kounde powered home a header.

- Yamal鈥檚 return -

Flick replaced Dro with Dani Olmo at half-time and also brought on Yamal before the hour mark, after the teenager recovered from his groin issue.
Voted the second best player in the world at the Ballon d鈥橭r gala on Monday, Yamal made an instant impact.
The 18-year-old burst into the box and crossed for Lewandowski to head home off the post, just over a minute after his introduction.
Szczesny made a good save from Oyarzabal as La Real gave Barcelona a couple of scares, while Remiro denied Rashford and Olmo with two more good saves.
The game grew increasingly chaotic and both sides hit the crossbar in quick succession.
Kounde, daydreaming in midfield, was robbed and Real Sociedad worked the ball to Takefusa Kubo, who crashed a shot against the woodwork.
Then Barcelona broke away and Ferran Torres teed up Lewandowski, who battered the crossbar when well placed to put the game to bed, but the hosts were not punished.
鈥淚t was a difficult game, I didn鈥檛 like our last 25 minutes, we suffered too much,鈥 added Kounde.
鈥淭he first 70 minutes I think were quite good, we could have scored more than two... but I didn鈥檛 like how it ended.鈥
Barcelona host Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday, also at the Olympic stadium.
Real Sociedad have had a tough start to the season, sitting 17th, but have been improving and will take heart from the pressure they put Barca under.
鈥淒espite the defeat I鈥檓 proud of the team鈥檚 work,鈥 said Odriozola. 鈥淚t鈥檚 been a tough start and today we showed up.鈥

  • Tilak Varma anchored India鈥檚 nervy chase with an unbeaten 69 and Shivam Dube (33) provided some support as they overwhelmed the target with two deliveries to spare at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium

DUBAI: India beat Pakistan by five wickets in the final to retain the Asia Cup title on Sunday, capping a remarkable unbeaten run with their third victory against their arch-rivals at this year鈥檚 tournament.
Put into bat, Pakistan could not capitalize on an 84-run opening stand between Sahibzada Farhan (57) and Fakhar Zaman (46) and were bundled out for 146 with five deliveries still left in their innings.
Pakistan lost their last nine wickets for 33 runs in a spectacular meltdown with India鈥檚 left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav (4-30) being the wrecker-in-chief.
Tilak Varma anchored India鈥檚 nervy chase with an unbeaten 69 and Shivam Dube (33) provided some support as they overwhelmed the target with two deliveries to spare at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Earlier, Pakistan got off to a strong start with Farhan leading their charge against an Indian attack weakened by the absence of their injured all-rounder Hardik Pandya.
Pakistan scored 45 runs in the first six powerplay overs but soon stepped up on the gas.
With Farhan in full flow and Fakhar playing the second fiddle to perfection, there was no inkling of the collapse lurking around until spinner Varun Chakravarthy (2-30) dismissed Farhan in the 10th over.
Kuldeep then took over, tying the batters in tangles while Axar Patel picked up a couple of wickets to hasten Pakistan鈥檚 collapse. Jasprit Bumrah also finished with two wickets.
India鈥檚 start was rather wobbly as they lost their in-form opener Abhishek Sharma, also the tournament鈥檚 leading scorer, and skipper Suryakumar Yadav inside the first 10 deliveries of their innings.
They slumped to 20-3 after the exit of Shubman Gill but Varma and Sanju Samson (24) decided to rebuild the innings.
Even that recovery would not have been possible but for the reprieve Samson, then on 12, got when Hussain Talat dropped him in the deep.
Abrar Ahmed dismissed Samson to break the 57-run stand but Dube combined with Varma to take India closer to the target before falling in the penultimate over.
Needing 10 runs from the last over from Haris Rauf, Varma hit the second ball for a six to effectively seal India鈥檚 thrilling victory and triggering wild celebration in the Indian camp.
