  • England鈥檚 371-run chase at Headingley joins elite list of historic Test wins
  • Record fourth-innings pursuits span from Bradman鈥檚 brilliance to debutant heroics

LEEDS, United Kingdom: England completed the tenth highest fourth-innings run chase in Test history with a pursuit of 371 that sealed a five-wicket over India at Headingley on Tuesday.
Below AFP Sport looks at the largest targets chased down in 148 years of Test cricket:

After both teams made 240 in their first innings, Australia made 417 in their second innings and would have expected an attack featuring fast bowlers Glenn McGrath, Jason Gillespie and Brett Lee to finish the job. But hundreds from Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul changed the game before an unbroken partnership of 46 between Omari Banks and Vasbert Drakes sealed a three-wicket win.

Australia appeared to have put the game beyond South Africa鈥檚 reach but Proteas captain Graeme Smith鈥檚 hundred and a century from AB de Villiers helped guide the visitors to a dominant six-wicket success.

Still one of the most famous Tests of them all, England captain Norman Yardley did not declare his side鈥檚 second innings until the fifth morning. But Australia still scored 400 runs in under a day鈥檚 play, with opener Arthur Morris making 182 and Don Bradman, widely regarded as cricket鈥檚 greatest batsman, an unbeaten 173 that sealed a seven-wicket triumph.

Alvin Kallicharran鈥檚 hundred built an imposing West Indian lead, but centuries from Sunil Gavaskar and Gundappa Viswanath took India to an eventual total of 406-4. The match proved a turning point as his spinners鈥 failure persuaded West Indies captain Clive Lloyd to break with convention by building an attack around four fast bowlers 鈥 a policy that helped his side dominate Test cricket for the next 15 years.

West Indies batsman Kyle Mayers enjoyed an astounding start to his Test career with an extraordinary 210 not out, putting on 216 with fellow debutant Nkrumah Bonner (86) to see the visitors to a three-wicket win.

Asela Gunaratne made a match-winning 80 not out, putting on 121 with Niroshan Dickwella (80) in the home team鈥檚 total of 391-6.

Two hundreds from Andrew Strauss put England on top, but Virender Sehwag made a quickfire 83 before batting great Sachin Tendulkar (103 not out) and Yuvraj Singh (85 not out) took India to a four-wicket win.

Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow hit hundreds as England romped home by seven wickets in a series finale postponed from 2021 because of coronavirus concerns within the India camp.

Pakistan were in dire straits at 13-2 early in their chase but hundreds from Shan Masood and Younis Khan turned the tide before Misbah-ul-Haq鈥檚 match-winning 59 saw them to 382-3.

India made 471 after being sent in to bat by England captain Ben Stokes but the hosts were only six runs adrift on first innings. England then dismissed India for 364 and opener Ben Duckett鈥檚 superb 149 the cornerstone of a chase completed by Root and Jamie Smith. This was only the third Test with more than 350 runs in all four innings, after Ashes clashes at Adelaide in 1921 and Headingley in 1948.

  • Neither side explained why he did not extend his contract until the middle of 2026, when many Brazilians still expect him to play in the World Cup
  • Since he left 海角直播鈥檚 Al-Hilal for Santos, Neymar has played 12 matches, scored three goals and provided three assists

SAO PAULO: Neymar has extended his contract with Brazilian club Santos until the end of December.

The 33-year-old forward returned to his boyhood club in late January but has been limited by injuries. His current deal was set to expire next week. Neymar and Santos confirmed the extension Tuesday.

鈥淚 extended my contract with Santos. I went, I came back and I stay where it all began and where it will never end,鈥 Neymar said in a video on his social media channels.

Neither side explained why he did not extend his contract until the middle of 2026, when many Brazilians still expect him to play in the World Cup. Earlier in June, new Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti hinted he is counting on Neymar鈥檚 recovery to play in the tournament in the US, Mexico and Canada.

Since he left 海角直播鈥檚 Al-Hilal for Santos, Neymar has played 12 matches, scored three goals and provided three assists. He had two extended periods of absence due to muscle injuries.

Neymar played 225 matches for Santos in his first spell. He scored 138 goals, many of them key to winning six titles at the Brazilian giant, which was relegated in 2023 and returned to the top division last year.

His latest appearance for the team was a frustrating one; he was sent off in the 76th minute of Santos鈥 1-0 loss to Botafogo at home on June 1 after using his hand to score.

Realizing he was not going to reach the ball with his head before a defender could clear it away, Neymar used his right hand to push the ball into the net.

The Brazil forward already had a yellow card and was shown his second by the referee, who then disallowed the goal. Botafogo then scored the winner in the 86th.

Saudi club Al-Hilal terminated Neymar鈥檚 contract with mutual consent, six months early, after he played only seven matches. An ACL injury sidelined him for a year until October. Al-Hilal said Neymar could no longer perform like he used to.

Neymar also left Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain to criticism, despite delivering silverware and goals.

Santos are in the 15th position in the Brazilian league with 11 points after 12 matches.

  • Anatoliy Trubin made four saves to keep Benfica鈥檚 second consecutive clean sheet

Andreas Schjelderup scored early and Benfica held on amid oppressive conditions for a 1-0 victory over Bayern Munich on Tuesday afternoon in Charlotte.
Anatoliy Trubin made four saves to keep Benfica鈥檚 second consecutive clean sheet and preserve its first-ever competitive victory over Bayern as the Portuguese club finished atop Group C and extended their FIFA Club World Cup campaign.
Benfica (2-0-1, 7 points) will face either Chelsea or Esperance de Tunis, who play later Tuesday to decide the second spot in Group D, in a Saturday round- of-16 clash also in Charlotte.
A heavily rotated Bayern (2-1-0, 6 points) had already clinched their spot in the knockout phase and will face Group D winner Flamengo on Sunday in Miami Gardens, Florida
Benfica went in front 13 minutes into a sluggish first half that was played amid temperatures hovering around 97 degrees and beneath bright sunshine.
脕ngel Di Mar铆a played a ball wide down the right for Fredrik Aursnes, who then dragged a low cross back to the penalty area. That鈥檚 where Schjelderup met it in stride and fired a low first-time finish past Manuel Neuer.
Trubin was exceptional after halftime as Benfica weathered increasing Bayern pressure.
In the 51st minute, Leroy San茅 ran onto Joshua Kimmich鈥檚 ball over the top but was denied by Trubin, who also made a more comfortable save of Thomas M眉ller鈥檚 follow-up effort seconds later.
Kimmich thought he鈥檇 scored from the edge of the penalty area in the 61st minute, but the goal was ruled offside because Harry Kane was standing in an offside position and in the goalkeeper鈥檚 view.
In the 74th minute, he denied Aleksandar Pavlovic with an outstretched leg from about 10 yards after Bayern鈥檚 initial cross from the right rattled off a few bodies inside the area.
Then in the 87th, he thwarted San茅 on the break for a second time after San茅 ran onto Harry Kane鈥檚 excellent through ball.

Lyon handed Ligue 2 relegation by financial regulator
  • During a hearing earlier in the day, Lyon were unable to convince DNCG to lift the restrictions
  • Lyon can appeal the decision

LYON: Seven-time Ligue 1 champions Lyon have been relegated to the second-tier by French football鈥檚 financial watchdog, the French professional league (LFP) announced on Tuesday.

During a hearing earlier in the day, Lyon were unable to convince the regulator (DNCG) to lift the restrictions it had put on the club in November.

Lyon can appeal the decision.

Before the meeting, Lyon鈥檚 president John Textor said he was confident of avoiding the drop to Ligue 2 for next season, where the club has not played since 1989.

鈥淲e have made a variety of investments in recent weeks,鈥 he said. 鈥淓verything is good financially.鈥

American Textor sold his 43 percent stake in Premier League outfit Crystal Palace earlier in the week. Lyon have reduced their salary bill and sold Rayan Cherki to Manchester City and Maxence Caqueret to Como.

Lyon qualified for next season鈥檚 Europa League after finishing sixth in the French top-flight.

If their relegation is confirmed, they would be replaced in Ligue 1 by Reims.

Lyon won seven consecutive French titles between 2002 and 2008. Only five clubs have won Ligue 1 more often. Paris Saint-Germain hold the record with 13 titles.
