  • Opener Faisal Khan scored his maiden T20I century as the Kingdom chased down a target of 162 runs with 28 balls remaining
  • Faisal is the second Saudi player to score a century in the tournament, following his elder brother Abdul Waheed, who scored a century in the first match against Bahrain

海角直播 registered its second straight win in the ICC Men鈥檚 T20 World Cup Asia Qualifier after beating Cambodia by five wickets in Qatar on Monday.

Opener Faisal Khan scored his maiden T20I century as the Kingdom chased down a target of 162 runs with 28 balls remaining.

Faisal is the second Saudi player to score a century in the tournament, following his elder brother Abdul Waheed, who scored a century in the first match against Bahrain and also happens to be his opening partner.

Against Cambodia, Faisal completed his half-century in just 20 balls, with 22 runs coming off the last four balls of Shah Abrar Hussain鈥檚 fifth over. Faisal鈥檚 blitzkrieg innings meant 海角直播 was 86-0 at the end of six overs.

Faisal and Abdul shared a 116-run partnership for the first wicket in just 9.5 overs as 海角直播 started off well. Abdul was stumped for 34 runs off Chadha, a dismissal that left Faisal fuming. Even though the chase was half done, Faisal felt it would have been special to share the moment of his century with his elder brother.

He was batting on 81 when Abdul returned to the pavilion. Faisal needed six more balls to reach three figures as he hit a six off Gireesh when on 94. Faisal was caught out on the last ball of the same over, ending with 101 runs off 42 balls. He hit six fours and 10 sixes in his innings. Faisal is only the third Saudi player to score a century in T20Is, after Waji Ul Hasan鈥檚 115 not out vs. Bhutan in February 2024 and elder brother Abdul鈥檚 110 vs. Bahrain last Tuesday.

Faisal said that the moment would have been even more special had Abdul been with him at the other end. 鈥淚 was very angry when he got out and the way he got dismissed. I was hitting the ball well, so, he just needed to occupy the crease and be with me. We have come through a lot, and had he been there, it would have been even more special,鈥 he told Arab News.

He feels it is easier to bat with his brother at the other end. 鈥淲e play for Pak Shaeens back in 海角直播, so, there is an understanding in the game. We have started playing together too, and whenever he is around, I am comfortable. It feels like my brother will make it right if something goes wrong from my end,鈥 he added.

Elder brother Waheed was happy to see Faisal back in form and said it was a proud moment for the family. 鈥淭he moment he got to the century was special, even though I was clapping from the pavilion. I know he feels comfortable talking and batting with me, as we share feedback consistently. It is a proud moment for our family that both of us have scored centuries. I hope we can contribute similarly to our team鈥檚 success in the coming days,鈥 he said.

海角直播 needed only 21 runs when Faisal was out. They lost two more wickets but were safely home in the 16th over. Faisal said that the team was looking for a big win from ball one, as they had an eye on the run rate.

鈥淲e needed to win big to stay in the hunt for qualification, and hitting the ball was the approach from ball one. The ball was coming well off my bat, and I just kept using powerplay restrictions to my advantage. I knew we could chase the total within 14-15 overs,鈥 he said.

Earlier in the day, Cambodia put up 161 runs for six wickets in their 20 overs after being invited to bat first at the University of Doha for Science and Technology ground. Lakshit Gupta top-scored with 62 runs off 45 balls, hitting four fours and three sixes. Uday Hathinjar added 16 runs and Luqman Butt contributed 26 runs, helping to build the score. Mahaj Chadha also played well toward the end, scoring 24 runs not out.

Cambodia had two strong partnerships at the start, with Hathinjar and Gupta adding 46 runs in five overs. Luqman stayed with Gupta to reach 109 in the 14th over, but the wickets tumbled at regular intervals thereafter. Ishtiaq Ahmad and Usman Najeeb took two wickets each for 海角直播.

After losing the first two matches against Bahrain and the UAE, 海角直播 has won three consecutive games, putting the side back in the frame for qualification. The top two teams from this seven-team qualifier will qualify for the regional final, which serves as a pathway for the ICC Men鈥檚 T20 World Cup to be held in 2026.

海角直播 is fourth in the table with four points and will face third-place Thailand, who have six points. The UAE and Qatar, who face each other on Tuesday, are both unbeaten and have eight points from four matches. Bahrain also has four points but is behind 海角直播 in net run rate. Cambodia and Bhutan are at the bottom without any points.

海角直播 is facing Thailand on Tuesday and will face Qatar on Thursday, which could be a winner-takes-all match to get to the qualifier. Faisal is focused on the match against Thailand, taking the remaining matches as two finals.

鈥淲e know how important the match against Qatar is going to be, but first, we are focused on the Thailand match. We will try to give our best to get the win and then only think about Qatar. A win is the only result that will take us forward, so, we are determined to make it happen. To get better matches, to improve our ranking and to make ourselves better, we need to win the two finals from here,鈥 he added.

Faisal feels that the tournament is very important for the development of the sport in the Kingdom, too. 鈥淚f we go through to the qualifiers, we will have more programs. Right now, there are no turf pitches for us to train on, which is why we find it hard in the first matches. Getting to the next round will only aid our development phase, and we are hopeful of achieving it,鈥 he said.

For the final round of regional qualifiers, Malaysia and Kuwait have already booked their spots from the Asia Group A qualifier, while Samoa and Japan are representing the East Asia-Pacific region. Nepal, Oman and Papua New Guinea will also compete in the regional finals as they qualified for the 2024 edition of the T20 World Cup, held in the US and West Indies.

  • Al-Ahli started their defence of the AFC Champions League Elite with a win over Central Asian opponents

JEDDAH: Al-Ahli started their defense of the AFC Champions League Elite Monday with a dramatic 4-2 win over Nasaf Qarshi while Jeddah rivals Al-Ittihad slumped to a 2-1 loss at Al-Wahda of the United Arab Emirates.

The holders found themselves 2-0 down at the break thanks to two goals from Khusayin Norchaev.

Merih Demiral gave the ball away just after the half-hour and the striker made no mistake. Then, four minutes before the break, the 23-year-old ran on to a through ball and slotted past Edouard Mendy from the right side of the area.

Al-Ahli threw everything at the Central Asian visitors in the second half and were given a lifeline after 65 minutes.  Abduvohid Nematov came out of his area to clear a pass over the top, missed and there was Millot to shoot into the empty net.

Four minutes later and the French midfielder was on hand to score from much closer range, slotting home a loose ball after the away team had failed to clear a number of dangerous attacks.

Then, four minutes into added time, Riyad Mahrez cut it from the right to fire a low shot into the opposite corner and there was still time for Mohammed Sulaiman to add a fourth and seal a dramatic victory.

It was the opposite feeling for Saudi Pro League champions Al-Ittihad. The Tigers went ahead in Abu Dhabi when Steven Bergwijn smashed home a fierce drive from well outside the area in the 21st minute.

The goal came against the run of play, with Al-Ittihad struggling to find their rhythm. It didn鈥檛 improve as the Jeddah giants were reduced to ten men eight minutes before the break as Muhannad Al-Shanqiti saw red for a foul on Facundo Kruspzky.

The hosts finally got the goal they deserved just after the hour. Omar Khribin scored plenty of goals for Al-Hilal and the Syrian turned provider, passing for Caio Canedo to slot home from close range.

Al-Ittihad looked like going back home with a point but that was snatched away in the 98th minute. Predrag Rajkovic saved a close range header from Alaeddine Zouhir and there was Lucas Pimenta to fire home the rebound.

Sri Lanka survive Hong Kong scare for four wicket Asia Cup win

DUBAI: Sri Lanka were made to sweat before edging Hong Kong by four wickets in the Asia Cup on Monday, as Wanindu Hasaranga鈥檚 late cameo spared the former champions an embarrassing stumble.

Chasing 150 on a sluggish surface, Sri Lanka looked comfortable at 119 for two with 31 needed off 30 deliveries, but a flurry of wickets, four for eight runs, set nerves jangling.

Hasaranga steadied the innings with an unbeaten 20 off nine balls, striking two fours and a six to seal victory with seven balls left.

Pathum Nissanka was again the batting linchpin, cracking 68 off 44 balls with six fours and two sixes. The opener, ranked seventh in the ICC T20 batting standings, posted back-to-back half-centuries to become the tournament鈥檚 leading scorer with 118 runs. Fortune favored him. He was reprieved on 22, 58 and 59, before being run out going for a risky second.

Hong Kong鈥檚 spirited effort was undermined by sloppy fielding as they grassed five catches that might have turned the contest on its head.

鈥淚t was a very good performance but we鈥檙e disappointed we dropped so many catches,鈥 said skipper Yasim Murtaza.

Earlier, after being sent in, Hong Kong charged to 31 for no loss in the first three overs. A 61-run stand from Anshuman Rath (48) and Nizakat Khan (52) anchored their innings, the latter posting his 12th half-century.

Dushmantha Chameera鈥檚 pace proved too hot to handle, finishing with two wickets.

鈥淰ery pleased with my form, but we have a long way to go,鈥 said Nissanka, who continues to flourish at the top of the order.

The win puts Sri Lanka top of Group B, all but ensuring a place in the second round with one match in hand.

  • Donation is to help alleviate 鈥渉umanitarian suffering鈥 in Gaza, Norway鈥檚 football association says

OSLO: Ticket sales from Norway鈥檚 2026 World Cup qualifier against Israel will go to medical charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF) to help it alleviate 鈥渉umanitarian suffering鈥 in Gaza, Norway鈥檚 football association said on Monday.
The October 11 match in Oslo 鈥渨ill be played against the backdrop of grave humanitarian suffering, and we are not and can not remain indifferent to this,鈥 the head of the Norwegian football association, Lisa Klaveness, told reporters at a press conference.
鈥淲e think it is entirely justified to give the ticket sales to Doctors Without Borders, which is providing concrete, emergency aid on the ground in Gaza,鈥 she said.
Klaveness criticized the 鈥渄isproportionate attacks targeting Gaza for far too long.鈥
The match will be played in a sold-out Ullevaal Stadium, which has the capacity to host a little over 27,000 spectators.
鈥淲e are moved to see donors willing to make such a significant contribution to support our colleagues plunged into a brutal and desperate situation in Gaza, where they need all possible support, both financial and moral,鈥 said Lindis Hurum, the secretary general of the Norwegian branch of Doctors Without Borders.
Norway tops Group 1 with five victories in five matches, ahead of Italy and Israel.
In their away match played on neutral ground in Debrecen on March 25, Norway beat Israel 4-2.
