Pep Guardiola reportedly agrees to contract extension at Man City

  • City has not commented on several reports that the 53-year-old Guardiola would extend his stay into a 10th season with the deal including an option for an additional year

MANCHESTER, England: Pep Guardiola has agreed to a contract extension to stay at Manchester City for at least another season, according to British media reports Tuesday.
The City manager, whose contract was due to expire at the end of this season, has overseen a period of unprecedented dominance since joining the club in 2016. City has won six Premier League titles in seven years and won the Champions League.
City has not commented on several reports that the 53-year-old Guardiola would extend his stay into a 10th season with the deal including an option for an additional year.
Under the Catalan coach, City became the first team to win four-straight English league titles. He also led City to the treble in 2023, winning the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup in one season — matching Manchester United’s achievement in 1999.
Guardiola’s apparent decision to stay also comes as City faces a slew alleged financial breaches. Punishment could be as extreme as expulsion from the league.
City faces more than 100 charges ranging over a nine-year period when it was trying to establish itself as the biggest force in English soccer.
The club denies the charges and Guardiola had said in September — when a closed-door hearing was scheduled — that he welcomed the chance to clear the club’s name. A verdict is not expected until next year.

  • The team’s creation stems from the Taliban’s ban on women’s sports following their takeover of Afghanistan in 2021
  • Prior to the Taliban’s takeover, Afghanistan had 25 women players under contract, most of whom now live in Australia

The Afghan women’s refugee team will take the field for the first time in an international tournament when they compete in a four-team friendly competition in the United Arab Emirates next month, world governing body FIFA said on Wednesday.
The team’s creation stems from the Taliban’s ban on women’s sports following their takeover of Afghanistan in 2021, prompting players to flee the country fearing persecution.
The “FIFA Unites: Women’s Series” tournament will run from October 23-29 in Dubai and feature the nearly-formed Afghan refugee squad alongside the UAE, Chad and Libya’s regular teams.
“Ensuring that all women have access to football is a priority for FIFA and a key element in shaping the future of our sport,” FIFA president Gianni Infantino said in a statement.
“We are aware of the potential the game has both on and off the pitch. These friendly matches represent more than just a competition; they are a symbol of hope and progress for women all over the world.”
Prior to the Taliban’s takeover, Afghanistan had 25 women players under contract, most of whom now live in Australia.
Afghanistan’s men’s team continues as normal.
FIFA has run several talent identification camps around the world to choose a 23-player women’s squad.

  • Barca’s Gavi sidelined for up to five months after knee surgery

BARCELONA: Barcelona midfielder Gavi will be out of action for up to five months after undergoing knee surgery to address a meniscus injury, the LaLiga champions said.
The 21-year-old Spain international, who tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in November 2023, injured his right knee in training in August after featuring in Barca’s opening two matches of the season.
“Gavi has had an arthroscopy to resolve a medial meniscus injury, which was sutured to preserve the meniscus. Recovery time is estimated at around four-five months,” Barca said in a statement late on Tuesday.
Barca are second in LaLiga, trailing Real Madrid by five points but with a game in hand. They visit Real Oviedo on Thursday.

  • Liverpool have made a perfect start to the season, with seven successive wins, including five in the Premier League to take them to the top of the table

LONDON: Alexander Isak scored his first Liverpool goal to inspire a 2-1 win against Southampton in the League Cup third round, while Chelsea survived a scare to beat third-tier Lincoln on Tuesday.
Isak was making his third appearance for Liverpool since his British record ÂŁ125 million ($169 million) move from Newcastle on transfer deadline day.
The 26-year-old had drawn a blank in his 58-minute debut appearance against Atletico Madrid and also failed to net after coming off the bench for the last 23 minutes of Saturday’s Merseyside derby win over Everton.
But Isak got off the mark in the 43nd minute as Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy tried a short pass that was intercepted by Federico Chiesa, who picked out the Sweden striker to fire home.
It was a belated birthday present for Isak, who turned 26 on Sunday.
Isak, who had scored for Newcastle in their League Cup final win against Liverpool last season, was taken off at half-time as he builds up his fitness after missing pre-season training while his transfer was being negotiated.
Shea Charles equalized for the Championship side in the 76th minute with a close-range finish after a wayward header from Liverpool’s Wataru Endo.
Arne Slot had made 11 changes from the Everton game but substitute Hugo Ekitike saved Liverpool’s understudies from a penalty shoot-out when he finished off Chiesa’s pass in the 85th minute.
The French striker took off his shirt to celebrate and was dismissed for a second bookable offense.
Liverpool have made a perfect start to the season, with seven successive wins, including five in the Premier League to take them to the top of the table and one in the Champions League against Atletico.
“Not our best performance. You can expect that if you play a complete new team. So many players that haven’t played for a long time,” Slot said.
“There were positives. Giorgi Mamardashvili had a good game in goal. A first goal for Alexander and another from Hugo.”

- Chelsea survive -

Chelsea were in danger of a humiliating exit after boss Enzo Maresca made eight changes following the 2-1 defeat at Manchester United on Saturday.
In their first meeting with Chelsea since 1911, Lincoln took the lead thanks to a Blues blunder in the 42nd minute.
Enzo Fernandez’s careless pass inside his own penalty area was intercepted by Ivan Varfolomeev.

Varfolomeev headed on to Rob Street and he guided a composed finish past Filip Jorgensen from 12 yards.
Chelsea had lost their last two games against United and Bayern Munich.
But Tyrique George got them back on track three minutes into the second half with a half-volley that crashed in off the post.
Facundo Buonanotte put Maresca’s men in front after 50 minutes, dancing through the Lincoln defense before slotting home.
“I told the players it would not be an easy game. That is why I was so annoyed in the first half, because we know we needed to do better. But overall, they did well in the end,” Maresca said.
Burnley crashed to a shock 2-1 defeat against third-tier Cardiff at Turf Moor.
Clarets boss Scott Parker paid the price for changing his entire team from last weekend’s game against Nottingham Forest.
Cardiff’s Joel Colwill prodded home in the 30th minute and Callum Robinson bagged the visitors’ second five minutes later.
Zian Flemming’s 56th-minute reply wasn’t enough to spare Burnley’s blushes.
Wolves lifted the gloom around Molineux with a 2-0 win against Everton.
Vitor Pereira’s team sit bottom of the Premier League after losing all five of their top-flight games.
Marshall Munetsi put Wolves ahead with a 29th-minute tap-in and Toluwalase Arokodare chipped home the second in the 87th minute.
Diego Gomez scored four times as Brighton thrashed third-division Barnsley 6-0 at Oakwell.
Emile Smith Rowe’s 66th-minute goal sent Fulham through with a 1-0 win against fourth-tier Cambridge at Craven Cottage.

  • Kylian Mbappe scored twice to reach seven league goals in six matches as Xabi Alonso’s side maintained their 100 percent record

VALENCIA, Spain: Real Madrid extended their winning start to La Liga with a comfortable 4-1 triumph at Levante on Tuesday.
Kylian Mbappe scored twice to reach seven league goals in six matches as Xabi Alonso’s side maintained their 100 percent record.
Vinicius Junior opened the scoring with a superb finish and Franco Mastantuono was also on target for the league leaders.
Second-placed Barcelona visit Real Oviedo on Thursday, with the Spanish champions trailing Madrid by five points.
“It was a very good game, from the start, we were really committed in defense and the first goal was fundamental, to go ahead and give us confidence,” said Alonso.
Vinicius was unhappy to be taken off by Alonso during the win over Espanyol on Saturday but the Brazilian winger started on the left flank and delivered.
Since coming second to Manchester City’s Rodri in last year’s Ballon d’Or rankings Vinicius has struggled for consistency.
However, he found his rhythm at the Ciutat de Valencia stadium and opened the scoring after 28 minutes, following a bright start to the game.
“Vini had a very complete, very good game and I am very happy for him,” said Alonso.
Valencia goalkeeper Mathew Ryan made a good save to deny Vinicius and Mastantuono hit the bar from the rebound as Los Blancos threatened in the opening stages.
Then fed by Fede Valverde on the right of the box, Vinicius used the outside of his right boot to bend a sumptuous effort in at the far post.
Ivan Romero and Adrian de la Fuente came close early for Levante but they were forced back and Madrid found their second when Vinicius set up Mastantuono, who rifled into the top corner.
It was the promising 18-year-old attacker’s first goal for the club since his summer switch from River Plate.
Ryan denied Vinicius with a good stop from close range before half-time.
Levante striker Karl Etta Eyong, in fine form himself at the start of the season, nodded home his fourth goal from close range after Romero’s cross was deflected and looped into the air.
It offered Levante a brief glimmer of hope but that was quickly quashed by Mbappe.
Unai Elgezabal clumsily brought down the French superstar in the box and Mbappe cheekily dinked the resulting penalty down the middle for the third.
Then two minutes later the forward, released by Arda Guler, rounded Ryan and tapped home his second of the night.
- ‘A good path’ -

Mbappe struggled in his first few months at Madrid after joining from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2024, but hit top form in the second half of the season.
The striker has carried that into the new campaign and has nine goals in seven games across all competitions, helping Madrid start the campaign in ideal fashion.
“There are still things we can do better, but we’re on a good path and we have to continue along it,” said Alonso, with Los Blancos facing city rivals Atletico on Saturday.
“We’re in a construction phase... there’s still a lot we have to do.
“We’re building a solid base, and in the team many players feel connected and important.”
Villarreal earned a late 2-1 win at Sevilla to rise to third in the table, above fourth-placed Espanyol who drew 2-2 with Valencia.
Bottom side Girona earned a creditable 1-1 draw at Athletic Bilbao, fifth.
