  • US Secretary of State Blinken to meet Arab leaders in Britain this week
  • Blinken urges Israel to use opportunity to end war in Gaza as he heads to Riyadh

RIYADH: Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman received US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Riyadh on Wednesday, Saudi Press Agency reported.

Blinken arrived in 海角直播 after wrapping up a visit to Israel where he urged leaders to use the opportunity to end the war in Gaza created by the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and the destruction of much of the group鈥檚 capacity during more than a year of conflict.

During the reception, the two officials reviewed Saudi-American relations and areas of joint cooperation.

They also discussed the latest regional and international developments including developments in Gaza and Lebanon, and efforts made to stop military operations and deal with their security and humanitarian repercussions.

Blinken will also travel to London later this week after visiting the Middle East, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said on Wednesday.
The top US diplomat will hold meetings with Arab leaders in the British capital after talks Thursday in Qatar, Miller said.
Blinken said Israel had succeeded in ensuring there could be no repeat of Oct. 7, 2023 and it should be looking to bring home the remaining 101 Israeli and foreign hostages and end the fighting.
鈥淣ow is the time to turn those successes into an enduring strategic success,鈥 he told reporters as he prepared to leave for Riyadh on the next stage of his visit to the Middle East.
鈥淭he focus needs to be on getting the hostages home, ending this war and having a clear plan for what follows,鈥 he said.

Israel鈥檚 assult has devastated Gaza and forced most of the enclave鈥檚 population out of their homes into temporary shelters. Blinken said Israel needed to do more to ensure that adequate humanitarian supplies reached people living in dire conditions.

Blinken is making his first big push for ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon since Israel killed the leader of Hamas last week - and his last before a presidential election that could upend US聽policy in the region.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu鈥檚 government has not formulated any clear vision for Gaza following the war beyond stating that Palestinian militant group Hamas鈥 military and governing capacity needed to be dismantled completely.
There has been wide concern among Palestinians that Israel intends to force Palestinians from large stretches of the Gaza Strip to enable greater Israeli control of the area and potentially allow Jewish settlers to return following their withdrawal in 2005.
Blinken repeated that the United States rejected any Israeli occupation of Gaza and said he had been assured by Netanyahu that Israel had no such plans, despite pressure from many in his own party to allow settlers to return.
鈥淚t鈥檚 been US policy, it will remain US policy, and it鈥檚 also, to the best of my understanding, the policy of the Israeli government, that I heard from the prime minister, who is the authoritative word on these things,鈥 he said

Over the past month Israel has also dramatically ramped up war in Lebanon against Hezbollah, a separate Iran-backed militant group that had rocketed Israel in support of the Palestinians. Israel has launched a ground offensive and killed most of Hezbollah's leadership in air strikes that have displaced 1.2 million people.

In Lebanon, Israel's military said it had killed three Hezbollah commanders and some 70 fighters in the south in the past 48 hours, a day after confirming it had killed Hashem Safieddine, the militant group's heir apparent leader.

Iraqi foreign minister calls for emergency meeting of Arab counterparts next week
  • Its aim would be to coordinate Arab positions on the escalating military confrontation between Israel and Iran
  • Fuad Hussein suggests it take place during the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation鈥檚 Council of Foreign Ministers session that begins in Istanbul on Saturday

LONDON: Iraq鈥檚 foreign minister, Fuad Hussein, on Wednesday called for an emergency meeting of his Arab counterparts to discuss the conflict between Israel and Iran, which he said poses destabilizing risks to the wider Middle East.

He suggested it take place on the sidelines of the 51st session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation鈥檚 Council of Foreign Ministers, which is due to begin in Istanbul on Saturday. The aim of the emergency meeting would be to coordinate Arab positions on the escalation of the military confrontation between Israel and Iran, who have been exchanging attacks since Friday.

Also on Wednesday, Hussein called his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty, to discuss the conflict and its repercussions for the security and stability of the region, officials said. Iraq currently chairs the Arab League, which held its most recent summit in Baghdad in May. Egypt hosts the League鈥檚 headquarters in Cairo.

Putin says Iran-Israel deal that suits both sides is possible
  • Israel鈥檚 strikes on Iran had led to a 鈥渃onsolidation鈥 of Iranian society around its leadership, Putin says
  • Russia has deepened military ties with Iran since Moscow launched its campaign in Ukraine in 2022

SAINT PETERSBURG: Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that a deal to end the fighting between Israel and Iran was possible, and that Israel鈥檚 strikes on Iran had led to a 鈥渃onsolidation鈥 of Iranian society around its leadership.
鈥淲e see that today in Iran there is a consolidation of society around the country鈥檚 political leadership,鈥 Putin told foreign journalists, including AFP, at a televised event.
鈥淭his is a delicate issue, and of course we need to be very careful here, but in my opinion, a solution can be found,鈥 he added.
Putin said such an agreement could guarantee both Israel鈥檚 security and Iran鈥檚 desire for a civilian nuclear program.
Israel said its surprise air campaign was aimed at preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons 鈥 an ambition Tehran denies.
鈥淚 believe it would be good for all of us together to look for ways to stop the fighting and seek ways for the participants in the conflict to find an agreement,鈥 he said.
Putin said there were more than 200 Russian employees at the Bushehr nuclear power plant in southern Iran which was built by Russia鈥檚 Rosatom.
鈥淲e agreed with the leadership of Israel that their security would be ensured,鈥 he said.
He said Russia could 鈥渃ontinue鈥 to work with Iran on its civilian nuclear program and 鈥渆nsure their interests in this sphere.鈥
US President Donald Trump on Wednesday appeared to rebuff Putin鈥檚 earlier offer to mediate in the conflict, saying the Russian president should end his own conflict in Ukraine first.
鈥淚 spoke to him yesterday and... he actually offered to help mediate, I said 鈥榙o me a favor, mediate your own,鈥欌 Trump told reporters as he unveiled a giant new flag pole at the White House.
Russia has deepened military ties with Iran since Moscow launched its campaign in Ukraine in 2022.
Moscow and Tehran in January inked a far-ranging strategic partnership agreement, and Kyiv and its allies have long accused Iran of supplying Russia with drones and short-range missiles.
The assault on Ukraine and the war in Gaza have strained Moscow鈥檚 traditionally good relations with Israel, home to a large Russian-born community.

Iran-Israel war fears spark fuel shortages in West Bank
  • 鈥淔earing potential supply disruptions or further escalation, citizens across the West Bank have begun stockpiling fuel,鈥 said Abu Al-Rob
  • In the northern West Bank city of Nablus, dozens of drivers waited in line for fuel

RAMALLAH, Palestinian Territories: Fears over the war between Israel and Iran have led to fuel shortages in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian Authority told AFP Wednesday, as drivers queued in long lines to buy fuel.

鈥淔earing potential supply disruptions or further escalation, citizens across the West Bank have begun stockpiling fuel, putting additional pressure on an already strained market,鈥 said Mohammad Abu Al-Rob, director of the PA鈥檚 communications center.

After decades of enmity and a prolonged shadow war, Israel on Friday launched a massive bombing campaign that prompted Iran to respond with missiles and drones.

The PA official said there has also been 鈥渁 noticeable decline in the number of fuel tankers arriving from Israel, some of which have been redirected for use by the Israeli occupation army.鈥

In the northern West Bank city of Nablus, dozens of drivers waited in line for fuel.

Mohammad Ayoub, a resident of Nablus who had been waiting in line for two hours, said he hoped to finally purchase fuel after several failed attempts.

鈥淚 came yesterday at about 11:00 p.m. and found the gas stations closed. I also came early in the morning and the situation was the same.鈥

Ahmad Samaana, a truck driver from Nablus, complained of limits placed on fuel purchases.

鈥淟arge trucks, like the one I have, need about 500 liters, but when we enter the station, the worker at the station tells me that he allows filling up with a value of 500 shekels, which is less than 100 liters of diesel,鈥 he told AFP.

鈥淭his is not enough for a truck.鈥

Abu Al-Rob noted that 鈥渢he (fuel) supply chain remains entirely subject to Israel鈥檚 will and control,鈥 as the country controls all entry points into the West Bank, which it has occupied since 1967.

He relayed the Ramallah-based Palestinian Authority鈥檚 call 鈥渢o safeguard the flow of essential supplies 鈥 particularly fuel for hospitals, bakeries, and other critical sectors鈥 should the situation worsen.

Israel to resume natural gas exports when military deems it鈥檚 safe, energy minister says
  • Cohen said he has been in contact with Egypt and Jordan about the cut in supplies.
  • 鈥淚 don鈥檛 want to use our strategic storage, so therefore, I needed to cut exports鈥

TEL AVIV: Israel will resume its natural gas exports when the country鈥檚 military believes it would be safe to do so, Israel鈥檚 Energy Minister Eli Cohen said on Wednesday, as an air battle between Israel and Iran entered its sixth day.

Two of Israel鈥檚 three gas fields 鈥 Chevron-operated Leviathan and Energean鈥檚 Karish 鈥 off its Mediterranean coast that provide the bulk of exports to Egypt and Jordan, have been shut since June 13 amid the conflict between Israel and Iran.

That leaves in operation only the older Tamar field, used mainly for domestic supplies.

Cohen said he has been in contact with Egypt and Jordan about the cut in supplies.

鈥淭hey can see that we are in a war. I don鈥檛 want to use our strategic storage, so therefore, I needed to cut exports,鈥 Cohen told Reuters after a news briefing.

鈥淚 hope I will be able to use another rig as soon as possible and use it for the supply of gas (exports). For me, the most important thing is (supplying) Israel,鈥 he said, alluding to fueling needs during the conflict with Iran.

It wasn鈥檛 clear when another gas field will be reopened, Cohen said, noting: 鈥淲e are working with them [the military], the Navy, and right now their recommendation is that one (field) will continue to work and two will be shut down.鈥

Israeli gas accounts for about 15-20 percent of Egypt鈥檚 consumption, data from the Joint Organizations Data Initiative (JODI) shows. The disruption to Israel鈥檚 gas supply led Egyptian fertilizer producers to halt operations on Friday.

Israel launched the air war on Iran on Friday after concluding the latter was on the verge of developing a nuclear weapon. Iran maintains its nuclear program is purely for civilian purposes.

OTHER ENERGY SOURCES
Israel鈥檚 energy sector, Cohen said, was operating normally, with no shortages expected since the country also maintains reserves in coal, diesel and renewable energy.

Israel鈥檚 Oil Refineries in Haifa was hit by an Iranian missile this week, which killed three people and halted operations.

Cohen said he hoped the facility would resume operations within a month, though a second refinery in the south remains open.

Since Friday, the percentage of renewable, or solar, energy used in electricity production has more than doubled to some 40 percent, Cohen said.

There was also some damage to wastewater treatment facilities and pipelines from Iranian air strikes.

Cohen acknowledged that victory against Iran could take weeks but Israel鈥檚 energy demands could be met.

鈥淎lthough the Iranians struck some of our plants, we have very strong energy facilities that can supply all the energy demands for Israeli citizens and the army, in fuel, gas, electricity and water.鈥
