MIAMI: Jordi Alba and Tadeo Allende each had two goals to lead host Inter Miami to a 4-1 victory over the New England Revolution on Saturday night in Fort Lauderdale, Florida
The victory snapped a two-match winless streak for Inter Miami (17-7-8, 59 points), which moved into third place in the Eastern Conference standings. With two matches to play, Miami trails FC Cincinnati by three points for second place. Cincinnati has one match left.
Dor Turgeman scored the lone goal for New England (9-16-8, 35 points) as the Revolution came up short of victory for the fifth time in their past six matches.
Lionel Messi did not score for the second consecutive match, but he contributed by assisting on three of Inter Miami鈥檚 goals.
On the first goal, under a torrential downspout late in the first half, Messi delivered a precise through ball on the run to Allende, who fired the ball past New England goalkeeper Matt Turner in the 32nd minute.
Just before halftime, Messi intercepted a clearing attempt by New England near its own goal. He then dropped it back for Alba, who proceeded to bury it in the back of the net in the third minute of first-half stoppage time.
The Revolution put themselves back in contention for a victory in the 59th minute on a brilliant shot by Turgeman after he took the ball just past midfield from Carles Gil. As Turgeman worked the ball near Miami鈥檚 box, he fired a line drive past Inter Miami goalkeeper Rocco Rios Novo to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Rios Novo got the start in favor of Inter Miami鈥檚 regular starting keeper Oscar Ustari, who allowed a season-high five goals last Tuesday in a 5-3 loss to the Chicago Fire.
Inter Miami answered almost immediately. Within less than a minute, a rush up the field ended with Allende streaking toward the goal and finishing another assist from Messi.
Three minutes later, Alba tacked on another score off a great pass from Telasco Segovia.

Vinicius double helps Real Madrid beat Villarreal
  • Los Blancos moved two points clear of champions Barcelona, who visit Sevilla on Sunday, as they bounced back from last week鈥檚 derby drubbing

MADRID: Vinicius Junior fired Real Madrid to the top of La Liga with a brace in a 3-1 win over Villarreal on Saturday, while Kylian Mbappe was also on target.
Los Blancos moved two points clear of champions Barcelona, who visit Sevilla on Sunday, as they bounced back from last week鈥檚 derby drubbing.
Having returned from their long midweek trip to Kazakhstan, where they beat Kairat in the Champions League, Madrid turned their focus back to domestic matters.
Thrashed 5-2 by city rivals Atletico Madrid last weekend, Xabi Alonso鈥檚 side had plenty to prove against a strong Villarreal team, who are third.
鈥淚 played very well and I want to continue like this, keeping this confidence and doing even more,鈥 Vinicius told Real Madrid TV.
鈥淲e have good feelings... when we come back (from the international break) we have big games and we need confidence,鈥 added Vinicius.
The winger did not start the season well but has found form in recent outings.
鈥淰ini had a very good game and he was decisive, I鈥檓 very happy for him,鈥 Alonso told reporters.
Alonso brought Fede Valverde back into the team, playing him at right-back in the absence of injured duo Dani Carvajal and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Madrid had the better of a slow-paced first half at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Teenage attacker Franco Mastantuono might have sent Los Blancos ahead but Villarreal defender Renato Veiga blocked his shot after Mbappe cut the ball back to him.
At the other end, Thibaut Courtois saved superbly from Tani Oluwaseyi, who snuck in behind the center-backs but could not beat Madrid鈥檚 Belgian goalkeeper.
Los Blancos took the lead early in the second half through Vinicius, whose shot took a fortunate deflection off Santi Comesana and flew past the helpless Arnau Tenas.
Xabi Alonso brought on Jude Bellingham for the final 25 minutes, after benching him for the second game running following the Atletico debacle.
Thomas Tuchel left the midfielder out of his England squad for upcoming World Cup qualifiers this week, and he was out to prove a point.

- Tenas resistance -

Madrid doubled their lead when Rafa Marin brought down Vinicius in the area and the Brazilian beat Tenas from the spot. The former Barcelona goalkeeper could have stopped the penalty but the ball slipped under him.
Alonso said that Mbappe is Madrid鈥檚 main penalty taker but 鈥渋t was their decision鈥 to give Vinicius the ball.
Vinicius wanted another penalty when Tenas appeared to bring him down in the box moments later, but his appeals were waved away.
Bellingham twice came close but Tenas denied him on both occasions, with the midfielder kicking a post in frustration.
Villarreal pulled a goal back through Georges Mikautadze, who finished lethally from the edge of the box, but Madrid quickly restored their two-goal cushion.
Yellow Submarine defender Santiago Mourino was sent off for a second yellow card for a push on Vinicius as he charged down the wing, and soon Mbappe netted the third.
Brahim Diaz teed up the French superstar to roll home his ninth league goal of the campaign, making him the division鈥檚 top scorer.
Mbappe was taken off grimacing in the final stages, in the only negative note for a Madrid side who were good value for their three points.
鈥淜ylian already had a little discomfort in his ankle, we will see how it goes,鈥 said Alonso, adding that the forward would still travel to join up with the French national team.
Villarreal鈥檚 Comesana complained about some of the refereeing decisions that went against his side.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a shame about the first goal which hit me, and then came the penalty, which wasn鈥檛 enough (of a foul) to give it,鈥 Comesana told DAZN.
鈥淭hat hurt us a lot, you only have to look how he threw himself down... and the red card (was soft)... if it鈥檚 already hard to win at the Bernabeu, with these things it鈥檚 even harder.鈥

Liverpool suffer third successive loss as Estevao strikes late for Chelsea

Liverpool suffer third successive loss as Estevao strikes late for Chelsea
  • Arne Slot鈥檚 side were rocked by Estevao鈥檚 close-range finish in the final seconds at Stamford Bridge

LONDON: Liverpool crashed to a third successive defeat as Estevao Willian鈥檚 last-gasp strike condemned the spluttering Premier League champions to a 2-1 defeat against Chelsea on Saturday.

Arne Slot鈥檚 side were rocked by Estevao鈥檚 close-range finish in the final seconds at Stamford Bridge after Cody Gakpo鈥檚 second half equalizer had canceled out Moises Caicedo鈥檚 brilliant opener for the Blues.

After making a perfect start to the season with seven wins in all competitions, including five in the Premier League, Liverpool have suffered an unexpected blip with shock defeats at Crystal Palace, Galatasaray and Chelsea.

Having lost to Palace in the closing moments last weekend, this was another agonizing blow for Liverpool, who had made a habit of scoring late winners themselves in the early weeks of the season.

Those late goals had papered over the cracks as Liverpool struggle to gel following Slot鈥檚 close-season spending spree.

Once again the second-placed Reds were below the standards that carried them to the title last season despite splashing out more than 拢400 million ($539 million) on new signings.

They have surrendered first place to Arsenal, who climbed one point above them after beating West Ham on Saturday.

Chelsea鈥檚 late show lifted them to sixth place as under-fire boss Enzo Maresca avoided a third successive league defeat.

Maresca鈥檚 men snatched the lead with a bolt from the blue in the 14th minute.

When Liverpool carelessly conceded possession, Caicedo pounced on the loose ball and advanced unchecked as Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate backed off, allowing the 23-year-old midfielder to lash a sublime strike into the top corner from the edge of the area.

Caicedo鈥檚 third goal this season was the kind of breathtaking moment that underlined why Liverpool were so keen to sign him from Brighton before Chelsea outbid them for the Ecuadorian in 2023.

- Liverpool rocked -

The Reds lacked their usual fluency and Alejandro Garnacho almost added to Slot鈥檚 angst with a curler that clipped the outside of the post as Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili stood rooted to the spot.

Garnacho was denied a penalty just before half-time after Dominik Szoboszlai shoved the Argentine to the turf, with the incensed Maresca earning a booking after becoming embroiled in a row with Liverpool goalkeeping coach Xavi Valero.

Alexander Isak was anonymous for long periods and when he did get a sight of goal, Liverpool鈥檚 British record signing headed wastefully over.

Slot replaced Conor Bradley with Florian Wirtz at half-time in a bid to spark Liverpool and the move nearly paid instant dividends.

Wirtz鈥檚 clever turn and pass inside the Chelsea area teed up Mohamed Salah, but the Egypt star blazed wide.

It took Liverpool until the 51st minute to muster a shot on target as Ryan Gravenberch鈥檚 long-range drive was held by Robert Sanchez.

Salah squandered another sight of goal with a wayward finish that summed up his recent dip in form.

When Chelsea lost Benoit Badiashile to an injury, Reece James was forced to move to center-back in a switch that Liverpool quickly exposed.

Given too much time by Marc Cucurella, Szoboszlai whipped a cross into the six-yard box.

James was slow to react and Isak flicked the ball toward Gakpo, who stabbed home from close-range for his first goal in eight games.

Adding to Maresca鈥檚 problems, Josh Acheampong limped off to join Chelsea鈥檚 long list of defensive injuries.

But Chelsea finished strongly and Mamardashvili made good saves to deny Jamie Gittens and Estevao before Enzo Fernandez鈥檚 glancing header smacked off the post.

The Blues鈥 late barrage was rewarded deep into stoppage-time as Cucurella whipped a cross into the six-yard box and Estevao stretched to slot home from an acute angle.

Maresca embarked on a jubilant sprint down the touchline to celebrate with his players, earning a red card in the process.

With Stamford Bridge rocking in triumph, Slot stood ashen-faced on the touchline as Liverpool鈥檚 latest loss hit home.

Anisimova thrashes Gauff to reach China Open final
  • The 21-year-old reigning French Open winner double-faulted twice to give Anisimova two set points before finally getting herself on the scoreboard

BEIJING: US Open runner-up Amanda Anisimova crushed defending champion Coco Gauff 6-1, 6-2 in 58 minutes on Saturday to reach the China Open final and will face Linda Noskova.

The 26th-seeded Noskova of the Czech Republic saved three match points in her semifinal to stun fifth seed Jessica Pegula in three sets.

鈥淚 felt really good throughout the whole match,鈥 third-seeded American Anisimova, beaten in the final in New York by Aryna Sabalenka a month ago, said.

鈥淎ll my shots were working today, which is my favorite way to play.

鈥淐oco鈥檚 a really tough player, so I knew I was gonna really have to step it up.鈥

Anisimova said she was surprised to be back in another final so soon, having taken time off after the US Open and removing a tooth the day of her flight.

鈥淚 didn鈥檛 really feel like I was match fit ahead of the tournament,鈥 said the 24-year-old, who is one win away from a fourth career title.

鈥淚 was like, is it a mistake that I鈥檓 flying there (Beijing) and everything鈥檚 just off to a bad start?

鈥淏ut I think I learned ... when I鈥檓 not feeling my best physically or I鈥檓 facing a challenge, I actually play better because I don鈥檛 have as much pressure.鈥

Anisimova stormed into a 5-0 first-set lead in 15 minutes as an uncharacteristically shaky Gauff hit a slew of shots long and into the net.

The 21-year-old reigning French Open winner double-faulted twice to give Anisimova two set points before finally getting herself on the scoreboard. But it was far too little, far too late.

Gauff鈥檚 nightmare continued in the second set as Anisimova again raced into a 5-0 lead over her compatriot.

Gauff managed to close that deficit by two games but a commanding Anisimova closed out in less than an hour.

It was Anisimova鈥檚 quickest win yet in the Chinese capital, where she pulled off two three-set comebacks.

鈥淪he鈥檚 definitely one of the best,鈥 Gauff said.

鈥淭oday I would have liked to perform better and I need to step up my game.鈥

Gauff鈥檚 only previous loss on Beijing鈥檚 center Diamond Court had been to Poland鈥檚 world No. 2 Iga Swiatek in 2023, also in the semifinals.

鈥淚t鈥檚 been a great year for me,鈥 Anisimova, who qualified for the WTA Finals this week in Beijing, added.

Noskova surprised the more fancied American Pegula 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (8/6) to pull through in 2h 28min and will contest the biggest match of her career on Sunday.

鈥(Pegula) played incredible,鈥 Noskova, 20, said.

鈥淚t was just two points away from a win or a lose.

鈥淚鈥檓 just too happy that I would win.鈥

The two played smart over intense rallies, moving each other around the court.

The deciding set was a nail-biter, with the more experienced Pegula double-faulting on match point, before they went to a tiebreak.

鈥淚t was quite a tough match mentally and physically and everything else, so I鈥檓 just gonna cherish this win,鈥 Noskova said.

She is after the second title of her career and first at the 1000 level.

Arsenal go top of Premier League as Man Utd ease pressure on Amorim
  • Victory came at a cost for Arsenal as captain Martin Odegaard was forced off injured
  • Amorim鈥檚 bold calls with his team selection paid off

LONDON: Declan Rice came back to haunt former club West Ham as Arsenal moved top of the Premier League, while Manchester United handed Ruben Amorim some relief with a 2-0 win over Sunderland on Saturday.

In Mikel Arteta鈥檚 300th match in charge, the Gunners proved far too strong for the struggling Hammers in a 2-0 win at the Emirates Stadium to further their ambitions of a first Premier League title for 22 years.

Victory came at a cost for Arsenal as captain Martin Odegaard was forced off injured before half-time for the third time this season.

However, the strength in depth now on offer to Arteta has made light of Arsenal鈥檚 injury troubles.

鈥淲e dominated and fully deserved to win this,鈥 said Arteta. 鈥淭o go top of the table after some big fixtures over the last week and some injuries... we were able to respond.鈥

Rice, who left West Ham for a club record 拢105 million ($141 million) in 2023, ended the visitors鈥 resistence by blasting high into the net on the rebound after Alphonse Areola parried Eberechi Eze鈥檚 drive.

Bukayo Saka made the points safe midway through the second half from the penalty spot on his 200th Arsenal appearance after Jurrien Timber was brought down by El Hadji Malick Diouf.

Arsenal edge one point ahead of Liverpool, who are in action later at Chelsea.

Defeat leaves West Ham still languishing in the relegation zone.

- Breathing space for Amorim -

Amorim conceded on the eve of Sunderland鈥檚 visit to Old Trafford he needs results quickly to avoid becoming the latest United manager to suffer the sack.

The Portuguese had taken just 34 points from his previous 33 Premier League games in charge, but enjoyed a rare convincing win to give him some breathing space over the international break.

鈥淲e were a competitive and adult team today,鈥 said Amorim. 鈥淲e need to do this kind of performance away as well 鈥 it鈥檚 our responsibility to play like this.鈥

Before kick-off Old Trafford fell silent to honor the victims of a terror attack on a Manchester synagogue this week.

Amorim鈥檚 bold calls with his team selection paid off as goalkeeper Senne Lammens kept a clean sheet on debut, while Mason Mount justified his place over Matheus Cunha with the opening goal.

Mount eased the home fans鈥 tension with a fine finish from Bryan Mbeumo鈥檚 cross on eight minutes.

Bruno Fernandes saw a shot tipped onto the woodwork by Robin Roefs as United dominated the first half.

Benjamin Sesko doubled the Red Devils鈥 advantage with a predatory finish from a long throw-in for his first Old Trafford goal since a 拢74 million move from RB Leipzig.

There was nearly a twist at the end of the half as Sunderland were initially awarded a penalty, only for VAR to intervene due to insufficent contact by Sesko on Trai Hume.

Sunderland began the weekend in fifth after a dream start to their return to the top flight, but the Black Cats were dealt a reality check to end their four-game unbeaten run.

Tottenham showed their newfound defensive resolve under Thomas Frank to end Leeds鈥 year-long unbeaten league run at Elland Road with a 2-1 victory.

Mohammed Kudus鈥 first goal for Spurs secured all three points after Noah Okafor canceled out Mathys Tel鈥檚 opener for the visitors.

鈥淭hat feeling to get over the line, to get three points, was big,鈥 said Frank after his side moved up to third.
