  • The call for evacuations from southern towns included the provincial capital Nabatieh
  • “Only that uncertainty lies ahead. Anxiety and fear are omnipresent,” UN special coordinator in Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, said

BEIRUT/JERUSALEM: Israel’s military urged residents of over 20 towns in south Lebanon to evacuate their homes immediately on Thursday as it pressed on with an incursion after suffering its worst losses in a year of fighting the Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah.
The call for evacuations from southern towns included the provincial capital Nabatieh, suggesting another Israeli operation designed to further weaken Hezbollah is imminent.
Israel, which has been fighting with Hamas in Gaza for almost a year, sent its troops into southern Lebanon after two weeks of intense airstrikes, escalating tensions in a conflict that risks drawing in the United States and Iran.
In Beirut’s southern suburb, a Hezbollah stronghold, three explosions were heard on Thursday and several large plumes of smoke were rising after heavy Israeli strikes.
While Hezbollah said it detonated an improvised explosive device against Israeli forces infiltrating a southern Lebanese village.
Overnight, Israel bombed central Beirut in an attack the Lebanese health ministry said killed nine people.
Reuters witnesses reported hearing a massive blast, which a security source said had targeted a building in the district of Bachoura a few hundred meters from parliament, the closest an Israeli strike has come to the central downtown district.
“Another sleepless night in Beirut. Counting the blasts shaking the city. No warning sirens. Not knowing what’s next. Only that uncertainty lies ahead. Anxiety and fear are omnipresent,” UN special coordinator in Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, said on X on Thursday.

A Hezbollah-linked civil defense group said seven of its staff, including two medics, had been killed in the Beirut attack, which Israel said was a “precise” airstrike.
Israel also said it targeted a municipality building in the southern Lebanese town of Bint Jbeil killing 15 Hezbollah members, while more than a dozen Israeli missiles also hit the southern suburb of Dahiyeh, where Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed last week.
Eight Israeli soldiers were killed in ground combat on Wednesday in south Lebanon as its forces thrust into its northern neighbor.
As it pushes into south Lebanon, Israel is also weighing its options for retaliation against its arch-foe Iran.

ISRAEL, US VOW TO STRIKE BACK
The Islamic Republic launched its largest ever assault on Israel on Tuesday in what it said was retaliation for Israel’s assassination of senior Hamas and Hezbollah leaders and its operations in Gaza and Lebanon.
On Thursday, Israel’s military said it had “eliminated” Rawhi Mushtaha, the head of the Hamas government in Gaza, along with senior security officials Sameh Al-Siraj and Sami Oudeh in strikes three months ago.
Tehran said its attack was over, barring further provocation, but Israel and the United States have promised to hit back hard.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, speaking at an event in Doha, said Iran would be ready to respond and warned against “silence” in the face of Israel’s “warmongering.”
“Any type of military attack, terrorist act or crossing our red lines will be met with a decisive response by our armed forces.” Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani called for serious ceasefire efforts to stop Israel’s “aggression” in Lebanon and said no peace was possible in the Middle East without the creation of a Palestinian state.
What is happening in the Middle East is a “collective genocide” he said at the same Doha event, adding that his country has always warned of Israel’s “impunity.”
The Lebanese border front opened after Hezbollah fired missiles at Israel on Oct. 8 in support of Hamas in its war with Israel in Gaza.
Iran’s other regional allies — Yemen’s Houthis and armed groups in Iraq — have also launched attacks in the region in support of Hamas.
The Houthis, who have been firing missiles, sending armed drones and launching boats laden with explosives at commercial ships with ties to Israeli, US and UK entities since last year, said they launched a successful attack on Israel’s commercial capital Tel Aviv with drones. Israel said it intercepted a suspicious aerial target in the area of central Israel early on Thursday.
SHELTERING IN A NIGHTCLUB More than 1,900 people have been killed and over 9,000 wounded in Lebanon in almost a year of cross-border fighting, with most of the deaths occurring in the past two weeks, according to Lebanese government statistics.
Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati said about 1.2 million Lebanese had been displaced by Israeli attacks.
More than 300 of those displaced have taken shelter in a Beirut nightclub, once known for hosting glitzy parties and where staff are now using their guest-list clipboards to register residents.
“We’re trying to keep strong,” said Gaelle Irani, who was formerly in charge of guest relations, taking a brief break from finding people a corner to live in.
“It’s just overwhelming. So overwhelming and sad. But just as this was a place for people to come enjoy themselves, it’s now a place to shelter people and we are doing everything we can to help and be there for them.”
Hassan Shaaban, a fisherman from Sidon, said he has been struggling to make a living as the fighting rages.
“What can we do, we need to be able to live, we are working while they are striking, yesterday night was very intense,” he said.

  • Event to promote safe practices, increase awareness
  • Border Guard teams in Haql recently rescued three people from the water

RIYADH: The Maritime Safety Awareness Exhibition, which is organized by the General Directorate of Border Guard, is taking place in the Eastern Province to promote safe maritime practices and issue warnings against swimming in unauthorized areas.

Running through to Thursday at the Mall of Dhahran, the exhibition highlights key beach safety regulations, penalties for violating rules, and guidance on safe behavior at sea. It also showcases the directorate’s search-and-rescue efforts.

Visitors are reminded to check the weather, be cautious during changes of conditions, and ensure vessels are seaworthy before heading out, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

The directorate urges all beachgoers to follow safety instructions and swim only in designated areas, the SPA added.

Border Guard teams in Haql recently rescued three people from the water, while teams in Jeddah assisted nine citizens and an Indian resident after their vessel broke down.

In an emergency the public should call 911 in Makkah, Madinah, Riyadh, and the Eastern Province, and 994 elsewhere in the Kingdom.

  • Transformative environmental campaign set to combat desertification and enhance quality of life

RIYADH: The Green Qassim Land Initiative has made a significant leap in afforestation, planting a total of 7,521,316 trees across cities, governorates, and villages during its 15th phase.

This effort is part of an integrated plan to enhance vegetation cover, combat desertification, and improve quality of life, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Monday.

Launched in 2016 with support from Qassim Gov. Prince Faisal bin Mishaal bin Saud and oversight by Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture Abdulrahman Al-Fadhli, the initiative has grown steadily each year.

Salman Al-Swainah, director general of the ministry’s Qassim branch, called it one of the Kingdom’s most prominent environmental initiatives due to its tangible results.

The initiative runs in two annual phases — March and October — to ensure optimal climatic conditions for tree growth and sustainability, the SPA reported.

Al-Swainah highlighted that the initiative’s success stems from strong cooperation among government agencies, the private sector, environmental groups, and volunteers, reflecting rising societal awareness of afforestation’s importance for ecological balance.

Recently, the initiative received regional and international recognition at the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development Goals held at the UN headquarters in New York.

This recognition came during a presentation by Saudi Green Building Forum Secretary-General Faisal Al-Fadl at a regional session chaired by the UN Economic and Social Council.

Al-Fadl described the initiative as an integrated national model balancing environmental, economic, and social dimensions, according to the SPA.

He noted it has become a regional role model, planting millions of trees, creating hundreds of green jobs, and driving sustainable urban transformation.

The Green Qassim Land Initiative is a key environmental effort supporting the Kingdom’s broader strategy to expand vegetation, combat climate change, and achieve sustainability.

It also raises community awareness and promotes environmental volunteering, aligning with the Saudi Green Initiative and Quality of Life programs under Vision 2030.

Additionally, the initiative supports goals related to rural employment, clean water, sustainable cities, and responsible consumption and production.

Israeli authorities demolish four Palestinian structures in Jerusalem’s town
  • Jerusalem Governorate said that it is part of a continuous and systematic Israeli policy to erase the Palestinian presence from the city
  • On Monday, Israeli forces issued demolition notices for three residential buildings in the town of Qalandia, located northwest of East Jerusalem

LONDON: Israeli authorities demolished on Monday four Palestinian structures in the town of Al-Judeira, north of occupied East Jerusalem, according to the Palestinian Authority’s Jerusalem Governorate.

All the structures were demolished under the pretense that they were built without a construction permit. These included a two-story house, a park, a wooden shack, and boundary fences.

The governorate said that it is part of a continuous and systematic Israeli policy to erase the Palestinian presence from areas of Jerusalem.

On Monday, Israeli forces issued demolition notices for three residential buildings in the town of Qalandia, located northwest of East Jerusalem. Israeli crews, with military support, stormed the eastern part of Qalandia and delivered the notices to residents of three buildings with about 12 apartments, citing lack of permits, according to Wafa news agency.

Israel regularly denies Palestinians building permits, while illegally expanding Jewish settlements in Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank.

From 1991 to 2018, Israeli authorities approved only 16.5 percent of building permits in Palestinian neighborhoods in Jerusalem. The others were issued for Israeli neighborhoods in West Jerusalem and settlements, according to the organization Peace Now.

The Jerusalem Governorate added that in recent months, the Israeli authorities have demolished or issued demolition orders against Palestinian homes in various neighborhoods of Jerusalem, including Silwan, Al-Issawiya, Al-Eizariya, and Rafat.

Since Israel attacked Gaza in October 2023, authorities in Jerusalem have demolished more than 623 houses and other commercial facilities belonging to dozens of Palestinian families. The Israeli regime faces charges of war crimes and genocide in the Occupied Territories.

Pakistan stock market crosses record 142,000 points on strong earning hopes, stable rupee
  • Pakistan currency, which last month fell to a 22-month low against dollar, has lately recovered thanks to a crackdown on currency hoarders, smugglers
  • The rally was driven by investor optimism as the OGDCL received a $27.2 million TFC payment and cement sector outlook improved, Topline Securities says

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Monday extended its bullish momentum and surpassed the historic 142,000-point mark, with analysts attributing the rally to hopes of strong corporate earnings ahead and a stable rupee.

The benchmark KSE-100 index rose by 1,017.66 points, or 0.72 percent, to close at an all-time high of 142,052.64 points, up from the previous close of 141,034.98 points.

Ahsan Mehanti, the CEO of Karachi-based Arif Habib Commodities, said stocks reached the new all-time high amid speculations ahead of major earning announcements due this week.

“Strong financial results, favorable US tariff deal, rupee stability, government’s resolve to end power sector circular debt crises and thin inflation data for Jul’25 played catalyst role in bullish close at PSX,” he said.

Pakistan’s currency, which last month fell to a 22-month low of Rs284.97 against the US dollar, has lately recovered thanks to an intervention by Pakistani intelligence and investigation agencies, who have been cracking down on dollar smugglers and hoarders. The greenback closed at Rs282.66 as the Pakistani rupee gained 0.02 percent on Monday, according to central bank data.

Pakistan and the US also finalized a trade deal this week, which reduced tariff on Pakistani imports to 19 percent from an earlier announced 29 percent. As part of the agreement, Washington will support the development of Pakistan’s oil reserves.

The announcement drove investor optimism and played a key role in fueling the bullish sentiment at the PSX last week.

The Topline Securities brokerage firm said the rally was driven by investor optimism as the Oil & Gas Development Company Limited received a Rs7.7 billion ($27.2 million) TFC payment and cement sector outlook improved on better monthly performance.

“Investor participation remained robust, with a total traded volume reaching 663 million shares and a turnover of Rs42 billion,” it said in its daily market review. “CNERGY topped the volume chart with 53 million shares exchanged.”
